Fun. I was turning into the park, and a dude on skinny tire racing bike whipped around the corner behind me. The race was on. I cranked up the volume to see what he was made of. Quick check. He's right on my tire drafting, looks like he's working a bit. 200m, 300m . . . he starts to pull around me, his head is down and working, no looks. I'm gassed so I let him go. 200m, 300m. I recover and am pulling him in. He turns off to go around a loop. I go straight like I usually do. Climb a little hill. Stop. Here comes Mr. Fuji zooming by on my right. Did he pull off because he knew I would catch him? Oh yeah. A little racing fun on the morning commute.

Got stuck in my bosses office last night listening to her rant about her "glory days in high school" (which was 30 years ago mind you) for an hour. Meanwhile, I see it beginning to get dark outside. Ended up riding the last 1/3 of the 20 mile trip in the dark with a single "cats eye" LED light. That's my biggest pet peeve... people at work that don't understand a 1 1/2 bike commute isn't the same as leaving late and just hopping in the car... GRRRR!!!!

I agree with GTcommuter, felt the Georgia heat today. I leave the house at 8:20 a.m. to ride. Today was my second commute on bike and, man, I am loving it! I have yet to encounter a rude driver (I am sure it will come, though). I get on at the Brookhaven MARTA station (the Atlanta subway) and a couple made chit-chat with me on my bike.

lala 04-22-05 08:57 AM

A bit chilly, but good..low wind, clear skies. I'm having shifting problems, but all around a good not to fast ride.

Cerberusgl 04-22-05 09:34 AM

The ride was nice up to the last 3 miles when some kids waiting for the bus thought it would be funny to roll a plastic soda bottle in front of my bike as I rode by. They missed but I got in a bad mood after that. If they do it again I will stop and call the fuzz.

Rode my wife's hybrid yesterday. On the way home I spied a Litespeed a block ahead. Because I knew the timing of the traffic lights I just kept a steady pace, while Mr. Litespeed rode like a motorist: gunning it and then having to brake at each light. After about a mile, I caught up to him. I think he was surprised to see this middle-aged guy in a tie and dress pants, riding a woman's hybrid, and spinning along in the middle ring.

I noticed that he took off from the light in a huge gear. I thought of saying something but kept it to myself. "Nice day to ride a bike, isn't it?" "Yup. Are you coming from work?" "Yup. I just live a few miles away. Well have a good ride!"

I think I'd be a little surprised too. ;) Most commuters I see are wearing cycling clothes (lycra or baggy shorts) and T-shirt or jersey. Although there are these two people I see every afternoon that wear their work clothes (slacks and shirt or sweater) - but no tie.

RonH 04-22-05 03:20 PM

Today was great. The ride in was beautiful and the temperature was just right for shorts, T-shirt, and a vest. :)
The ride home was something else. The sky got BLACK and opened up in the early afternoon. Luckily most of it was over by the time I left work. :o It was lightly raining but it stopped by the time I'd gone 1.5 miles. Then I had the deal with the idiots who think that they're supposed to drive FASTER when it rains. :fight:

Got home and hosed all the road grime off the bike and washed all the wet stuff, which was everything. :(

A happy end to a glorious Earth Day.

pepsbandit 04-22-05 03:23 PM

I bike to and from high-school. I own a car but am against using it, and I ride a commuter, and wear a cool scarf when I ride it... so I'm technically a commuter right? The rides only about three miles each way.

I had an encounter yesterday with a roadie who was surprized when I cruised past him on my fixie with panniers. His response was to cut to the right of a bunch of right-turning cars so that he could drop me. I also saw him do donuts at a left hand turn so that he didn't have to unclip and pass a left-turning car on the right as he made the same left turn. I thought of saying something to him, too, but it was a little more grouchy.

cicadashell 04-22-05 03:48 PM

cooler, cloudy morning - the usual fun. i am, however, not completely looking forward to riding home in the 45 °F rain that is currently falling. at least it won't turn to snow until tomorrow.

*sighs*

Hey, be careful with that scarf, pepsbandit. Haven't you heard the urban legends?

dee-vee 04-22-05 04:51 PM

Ride to work was normal. After work I rode to pick up my pay check (7 miles away) and I got there right as some of my coworkers were leaving with their checks and one of them said "wow, your're quick", I said "yea, I am". I felt prety good.

Yeah, well the weather's nice, I was riding directly home so it's only 3 or 4 miles, and truth be told, I really dig it when it flaps in the breeze.

I brought a pair of shorts and a jersey in the backpack today so I'm hoping to add a 10 mile detour on the way home tonight. Godspeed and good weekend, Comrades!

ahpook 04-22-05 07:21 PM

There is some kinda crazy weather system blowing into the SF Bay Area right now, so
the ride home tonight was brutal! Cranking as hard as possible on the middle chainring,
to make a whopping 12mph.

Ride this morning was spectacular though. And maybe, just maybe, my Jamis will arrive this weekend! Overall a decent week - 8/10 bike commutes including one extra-long one home on monday.

Have a great weekend!

Yeah, if I can possibly let them turn, I do.

Broke a record yesterday on both the inbound and homebound route 2mph Faster!. This morning realized...duh, I broke a record because the commute was 4miles longer and that new section of road was flat and fast. That bumped the avg...so I'm not *really* faster....:(

Yeah man...anything to be first. I wanna yell out...wanna race? go to the track.

Rogerinchrist 04-22-05 08:25 PM

36F this AM with 5mph breeze in my face. 49F cool cross wind (20mph)coming home. More tommorrow, snow or not!

ollo_ollo 04-22-05 10:45 PM

52F with a few clouds at 6AM today. Rode the Miyata to check out the fenders I mounted last night. Everything was OK except for an occaisional rattle that shouldn't be to hard to fix. There were a few ducks & a Blue Heron out back when I ate lunch. It just got balmy & reached 72F this afternoon. Now there's a big fat moon lighting up the landscape. Bright enough to cast a shadow! Have a great weekend.

Wow, how was riding in Korea like? Did drivers just kind of aim at you?

My morning commute is 16 km through the city. Always a way to avoid unnecessary traffic, and quite a nice time in the morning. Plus my business definitely has a shower :).

Rogerinchrist 04-23-05 08:36 PM

33F this am w/ steady north wind at 9 O 'clock (15-20 mph).
45F this afternoon, with stronger winds. So I went into it for awhile. Ended up riding over to Lake Michigan, which turned the normal 15 mile round trip into 35+. After a hot coffee & sandwich my toes were warmed & I headed for home. With the N-NEast wind helping only a little, a few times the route turned me south for abit & I could cruise comfortably over 20mph.
Oh.......... it did snow both this morning & afternoon.

I've been caged up for the last five days with some friends on a roadtrip up to Chicago and then went by St Louis on the way home. What a joy it was to get back on the bike.

However I was welcomed home with thunder storms. By the grace of the powers that be, I remembered that I had a rain suit in my car that I acquired from an old job with the water works. It was horrible for breathe-ability(?) but it was cool enough that it didn't matter.

So I took off to the local watering hole and sucked down a couple of cold ones before taking off for another watering hole. Apparently I was more homesick than I thought I was. What a quick zip through downtown. Legs burning along with the lungs as I had to outrun a crackhead with mysterious motives. What fun!

Today the weather looked better from my bedroom window's view but I didn't notice the blistering winds. Just getting back from Chicago, I think this is nothing more than my friend has to deal with on a daily basis, so I head out anyway.

I went to an outdoor art festival (actually I drove my bike to the neighboring city that would consume my day just to reach, a brief confessional if you will). I practiced my walking speed through the crowd and received no nasty remarks from the many law-dogs that were around. So I assumed I was doing it right.

The art was more than I could afford and the crowd represented an unnecessary source of resistance so I found other parts of the city to explore. But soon I found that I was on unfamiliar streets and seemed to be making nervous circles, if you will for lack of better direction.

Makes me want to find a name for my bike so that I can call out to her like a lonely sailor or something as pathetically romantic when I'm away.

Starting week three for the season now that the snow has finaly melted. Would sure be nice if I could ride one day without the rain. Although the eight miles is not that tough no matter the weather.

I LOVE MY NEW FENDERS! :D

RonH 04-25-05 05:56 AM

No riding today. I'll be driving. :(
I was caught in the rain Friday afternoon and had a slight fever and was sneezing and blowing my nose all Saturday afternoon. No energy yesterday and the little woman made me rest all day (no riding :crash: ). She says I should take it easy today and maybe tomorrow.
Can you say, "Yes dear."

jeff-o 04-25-05 06:25 AM

Freaking SNOW on the 25th of April, combined with temperatures around 0 C and slick tires means my bike stays in the garage. :(

balto charlie 04-25-05 06:47 AM

Chilly commute this am, mid 40's. Spent 3 great days in NYC, not biking but saw a lot of bike messengers doing some crazy riding.

tulip 04-25-05 07:10 AM

Train commute today. Why? Because I felt like it. I expect tomorrow I'll be back on the bike.

Ed Holland 04-25-05 07:26 AM

This morning was welcomed in by heavy rain - a great start to Monday. Also my front wheel bearing was making ominous sounds (again). Despite this the ride was rather enjoyable!

Cheers,

Ed

Beautiful ride in this morning. Had to negotiate some branches and trash left by the county tree trimmers. Hopefully they'll get the mess cleaned up by tomorrow. Forecast is for a 20 mph headwind this afternoon.
