no thunderstorms on the way home yesterday - just bluster and spit. this morning it was a lot cooler (barely 40 °F) and quite windy - mostly from the north, which was helpful on the way in; here's to a calming effect through the afternoon, eh?

balto charlie 05-12-05 08:35 AM

no sun today, but still beautiful weather. still beautiful commute mid 50'sF/10C Need to buy a new beater, but my sons GF is a good ride. Maybe I can buy it from him.

Tomorrow I won't be riding cause I'm renting a car and leaving the big city behind for a few days. Looking forward to next week's Bike-to-Work day. There's a caravan that passes one block away from my house, so I'll pick them up.

Enjoy you trip, renting a car! You're carless, nice. I hope to ride Rt from Balto(catonsville) to Beltsville on bike to work day. Will be a long ride. We will see how the weather is and how I is;-)

Good rides all week this week. Yesterday afternoon was nice, took the 20 mi scenic route. Nice and fast this morning.

That is all.

lala 05-12-05 09:58 AM

Ooo. Yestday's ride in was very fast with the wind at my back...and I paid for it on the ride home: very challenging wind, soft trail. This morning, the legs really felt yesterday's ride and there was a head wind...so slow and easy I went.
This afternoon...come on tailwind!

Hickabod 05-12-05 10:13 AM

I hate to sound like a broken record, but today was another great ride into work. I saw a robin eating a worm and a mocking bird giving a crow a run for its' money. That's about all the nature my short commute had to offer today. It's supposed to start getting hot. Paradise lost.

caloso 05-12-05 10:52 AM

Boy, it's warming up. I think this morning was my last long-sleeve jersey ride until November. Noticed some chain skipping while pulling away from the stop signs and it occurred to me that I ought to have bought a new cassette while rebuilding the commuter. I'll stop by the LBS on the way home today.

Wow - high temps in the 90's today.
Good conditioning for the summer... at least the humidity is low, a seasonably 'dry' 49%! :p

rs_woods 05-12-05 11:19 AM

Some inconsiderate neighbor in one of the hoods my route is through let their two pit bulls out of their yard to run loose in the streets. one of them darted out at me in front of my bike and i hit it and fell ! it was so invigorating. im mostly okay but it must have been the grace of god that kept the other dog from jumping on me and mauling away. other than that it was the usual - good hot summer fun ;).

kevink159 05-12-05 04:17 PM

Today was the worst ride to and from work I have ever had. It rained on the way to work, I got there and realized I lost my lock, and on the way back I got a flat tire. I horrible ride, but still better than a car :).

vtjim 05-12-05 06:58 PM

I had a fun commute home today. I paced a guy on an MTB for about 6 miles. Once in a while he would stand on the pedals and push, which struck me as amusing because it didn't seem to change his speed at all. I decided that to pass him would be rude. He was going 15-18MPH, and there was a nasty headwind, so I just cruised along behind him.

Right before we separated, I reeled him in going up a hill just because I could. :)

spidercyclist 05-12-05 10:08 PM

Cold to nite on the way home. But still a good ride to work and home . Have a good nite .

billh 05-13-05 08:20 AM

I was bad yesterday pm. Traffic was horrendous on a 3 mile stretch of 4 lane suburban street. Both westbound lanes were just jam packed bumper to bumper. This usually means an accident on the adjacent highway, although I could not confirm it. Anyway, I was doing some serious "filtering" through the jam, passing on the right when I could, and when some large-a$$ truck was scrunched to the curb, I would hop on the sidewalk, then back into the lane when it cleared up. I usually despise cyclists who do this, but this seemed like and exception. I made it all the way up this one hill, passing these poor suffering motorists (waaaaaah . . . too bad). Hot and muggy. No fun for them. I was loving it. I mad it all the way up to the stop light and stopped behind and to the right of the lead car. The light was long so a good patch of pavement was clear ahead, until a 4-way stop sign about a mile up. The lane is narrow so I knew I would have at least one lane of angry motorists backed up behind me. Green light. I shot off the stop line like a rocket. Zoom. One car passed. Zing. Another. I'm hauling. I can see traffic backing up ahead. Another car, veering into the inside lane to pass me. It's a sprint. Then a car passes me just before traffic begins to back up again. She veers to the curb and slams on the brakes to cut me off and starts cussing me out. Without losing a pedal stroke, I hop on the sidewalk and bypass her. Hah, she is stuck in traffic again. LOSAAAAAR with a big "L" on your dang forehead. She wouldn't be cussing me out without the traffic jam. It's her choice to sit in a cage, not mine. It's all about "personal responsibility" as some are keen to point out. God help me, but I enjoyed it. I know, it's the devil in me.

I've got some adjusting to do. I worked up a good sweat last night with the temps in the high 40's. Think I'll bring my camelback next week.

RonH 05-13-05 10:33 AM

It was great!!
It's gotten warm enough in the mornings that I ditched the cotton T-shirt and wore a plain bright yellow jersey with my PI baggy shorts.
I guess next week I'll start bringing a wash cloth and hand towel with me to clean up at the sink. No showers here. :o

caloso 05-13-05 10:43 AM

Definitely warming up: high 50s F on the way in. By the time I rolled up to the office, my arm warmers were pushed down and my jersey unzipped. I love it.

I haven't been able to log as many miles as I planned to by the second week of May, but I'm just going to have to make the commitment to getting up early and out of the house every morning that I can. Be safe, everybody.

DonD 05-13-05 12:35 PM

It was low 40's this morning, and I wasn't sure I wanted to brave the cold, but I put a fleece under my jersey and started out. My hands got cold pretty quick, but I had packed full-finger gloves in my seat bag, and that did the trick. The ride was great -- I even added some extra distance to the commute by taking a more indirect route.

I'm looking forward to quittin' time and the ride home.

commute in was great, cool. Ride home was tough, blew a spoke, hobbled home. Wheel bldg wknd Enjoy the weekend, see ya Monday

spidercyclist 05-13-05 10:13 PM

Happy friday the 13th. Good ride to work and home.
My ride was still a little muddy, but still a good ride. Have a good night.

gboy 05-15-05 06:44 PM

Passed a teenager on a mountain bike who asked how many gears I had and then got passed by a large white-tailed buck on the way home.

billwatson58 05-15-05 07:10 PM

Windy on the 13+ miles to work, ave was 17mph. Tail/cross wind on the way home, ave went up to 18mph. On the way home saw some kids on BMX bikes....one came across as being a bit of a tough guy....he said "what's up" and I replied "nothing much....want to race?" and he said "sure".....so we took off and I never saw them again.

vtjim 05-16-05 05:16 AM

Went to work early today. Was out on the bike at 5:50AM. Trail was wet from overnight rain. Temps in the high 40Fs. Saw two loons in the water.

Another fine ride.

balto charlie 05-16-05 06:06 AM

cool, wet roads and nice ride at sunrise.

cicadashell 05-16-05 07:43 AM

a little cool this morning, 45 °F or so, but sunny, after a weekend of rain. also a bit of a following wind; hope it either turns or calms through the day.

i think i am seeing a few more folks riding in town, in response to all the month-of-may bicycle promotions that re going on. is anyone else seeing this in their fair burgs?

billh 05-16-05 08:10 AM

On my shared straight/right turn lane where I go straight, when the green arrow appears and I'm first in line with a car with no turn signal behind me; I 've just started pointing at them and then pointing right as if to say, "YOU, RIGHT-TURNER, GO!" So many people fail to use their turn signal, yet still get pissed when I'm in the lane, that I have to be traffic cop up there. I'm biased left but still most motorists are still stopping behind me, which is fine, I just need to play traffic cop. Better that than get run over.

TheAnalogKid 05-16-05 08:21 AM

The commute was fine this morning. Forgot a couple things, but it was the first morning warm enough to wear shorts, but the ride home might be in the 80s, but that's okay with me! As long as there's no rain.

Ebbtide 05-16-05 08:23 AM

I know I posted in this thread some time ago, but as its Bike to Work week I'll ad my uneventful story of the day:

It was cold and wet today, yet it was a beautiful ride!! When I got to work I was nice and warm from the ride, even a little sweaty. I toweled off and washed up at the sink as usual and was ready to start my day. This was my first ride with the new "messenger bag" (Eastpak girls carry-all thingy) I got from the Goodwill, I packed it full of clothes for the week. I think I liked the back-pack (book bag) better but I gave it to someone who needed it to carry food and they never brought it back.

DerekU2 05-16-05 08:24 AM

Overcast and wet this morning, but the rain had stopped so I decided to ride in. I'm glad I did because I would have been pissed when not even a single drop of rain fell on my car the whole ride in!

Today marks my 7th commute, and my third week. I'm going to try and commute every day this week. My favorite part has been the continued challenge of "beating myself." This morning, I made the first three miles of my ride in record time. Also, there's a tight 90 degree turn on part of the bike path I take. Today, I took the proper line so as not to have to brake to stay on the narrow trail. A small victory for me. My goal is to pedal through the entire turn. Maybe tomorrow eh?

If I make it to work in record time when driving my car, there's no satisfaction. No satisfaction in making a nice turn. No satisfaction in taking a good line... I love biking to work.

Happy Bike-To-Work Week, everyone!

Hickabod 05-16-05 08:59 AM

I wasn't expecting to see any additional commuters on my way to work this morning but I'll keep my fingers crossed for the way home. Perhaps I'll take the long way home to increase my odds.

The ride in today was chillier than last week but it was still great.

JohnBrooking 05-16-05 09:02 AM

Same story here, cold and damp, slight rain. When the h*ll is it going to warm up here? This is my third year, and I don't remember waiting so long other years for the warmer weather to arrive. I actually prefer somewhat warmer weather, low to mid 60's is my ideal. I hate wearing a lot of clothes. (I know, I'm in the wrong part of the country for that...) It's only been above the mid-50's a handful of times so far this season, even on the way home, and I'm getting d*mn sick of it.

(Sorry for needing to vent this morning. It's partly that it's been damp and rainy for at least 3 Sundays in a row now, plus the two Saturdays before this last. At least this Saturday was okay.)
