Hot, hot, hot! 104 degrees on the way home this evening. Funny thing is, it didn't feel that hot until I stopped. Then I couldn't jump in the pool fast enough, bike shorts and all. It's supposed to cool off a little later this week. I sure hope so!

I have new batteries and didn't get lost tonight! And my rear derailleur shifts like a warm knife cuts through butter :D Now all I've got to do is figure out the front derailleur...

Side not: I (almost literally) ran into a new commuter...he was in the bike lane with a look of complete and utter awe that someone actually rode with traffic...and he was wearing a tie...honestly, I don't think I've ever seen someone ride a bike with a back pack and tie at the same time...unless the tie was on their head.

Gugek 09-26-05 07:33 PM

Went into work a bit later than normal, 13.5 mile commute. The sun was fully up so I didn't have to worry about lighting but the traffic was a real bear. Its amazing the difference that two hours will make between rush hour and no one on the road.

Still warm weather though, I'm looking forward to autumn.

tokolosh 09-26-05 07:42 PM

stoopid, stoopid, stoopid cold. drove to work, came home halfway through the day; some nonsense about my sneezing distracting people. eating home-made beefnginger stirfry and glad other people are still at it out there so i can read about it.

spidercyclist 09-26-05 10:09 PM

I started my 6 mile commute at 6:30 this morning. I was glad I installed my headlight this weekend. It was dark, and I wished that day light savings time had not been extended. It was warmer than usual. This afternoon the ride home was even better. 80 degree temp with a strong tailwind. An approaching storm front reversed the usual headwind. Neither of my commuting partners showed this morning at the usual meeting point. They missed a great ride.

Another nice sunny day today, getting over a cold & went in at 9AM so didn't need my lights. On the commute home, I was approaching the start of a small downhill stretch, just hammering along when a taxi pulled even with me but 1 lane away to my left. He yelled out the open passenger window "Hey, slow down, I'm turning!" Then turned accross the lane to his right & through the bike lane in front of me into the lot of an apartment house. I had braked for him (not much choice was there?) & began to pick up speed again when I noticed he was still yelling something & waving his arm around. I just waved at him & kept riding. Watch out for those cabbies! Don

Beat the rain home last night and rode in during the sunrise this morning. Cooling down around here during the day, so it should be a nice ride home this afternoon. Construction is starting to go into full swing on my main route to work, gonna have to start taking another way in soon.

The rain was great last night. It wasn't falling much at all when I rode home, but it had earlier, scaring people away from the Hudson Greenway, so I had it all to myself for the most part. The clouds made things quite dark, though, so I had my blinkies and 10W in front on the whole time (with the 20W added for the darkest sections).

This morning was a fun commute. The wind was swirling a bit at times but it was mostly at my back and reasonably strong (13mph steady, 26mph gusts, according to weather.com).

PaulH 09-27-05 06:59 AM

I worked late last night, and rain darkened the sky. For the first time since April, I rode home with my headlights on. I felt the changing of the seasons.

Had a wonderful day as every day is for me. I am so lucky. My commutes take me past some of the most beautiful historical buildings and ancient locations in Japan. I pass several 800 year old temples and shrines. I often see Maiko and Geisha. Today was incredible. I was sitting with one of my students in Gion at a coffee shop and a Maiko came walking past and noticed us looking (as you do) and bowed her head to us. This may sound trivial to most of you, but if you have been to Gion and spotted one, you would know that it is very rare for either to make eye contact.
Beauty in simplicity.

What's a Maiko?

The commutes (since I am back on the road after a few days of no work - thanks to Hurricane Rita) have been very rough this week. My ride home was in 99 degree (112 heat index) weather. This morning was 78 degrees with 90+% relative humidity. WOW!

There is supposed to be a cold front coming through on Thursday to bring us down to 85 during the day and 69 at night..........Brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Might have to get my long johns out!

Keep pedaling!
Chris

Last nights trip home was good. First roundtrip day. I felt a little more weak than usual but took it easy and made it ok. Had to take a left turn from one major road to another. Took the left turn lane in line with traffic, the turn takes you downhill so I was able to totally keep up with traffic and make the next left turn onto a side street I take. I was almost maxed out in top gear.. it was awesome feeling.

This morning was good. Took a more scenic route that was probably even more direct. Legs felt good. I was able to make it up my one "hill" (big overpass) in a higher gear than I have before... and coming down I took the lane as to avoid the people moving into the right turn lane. Got a little honk from the person behind me when I moved over (had plenty of room) but then going down to the light I was going faster then everyone else, rode past everone waiting up to the front of the line. I love beating traffic!

dailyrider 09-27-05 08:35 AM

Cool and party cloudy above the fog. My glasses got misted up making the headlights of the cars look like golden rings. No other commuters this morning. I warmed up quite a bit after 4 miles, so I took off my windbreaker and fleece. Must have loosened my ipod, as it fell after taking a turn at full speed in traffic. Nobody ran over it. Still works fine.

Two notably courteous drivers this morning. I only see one jerk a week, but maybe two or three kind drivers a day. Of course, jerks can kill you, and kind drivers can't bring you back to life. But overall, I think I live in a very bicycle friendly town.

I listen to "the teaching company" lectures while I ride. I can pretend I am improving both body and mind.

Yesterday on the way home I rode into a rainbow most of the way. I never reached it though. It was another bicycle commute that makes it worth while.

pinkrobe 09-27-05 09:34 AM

Right around 0C today and damp from some snow/rain that fell overnight. A courier gave me the stinkeye when I pulled up behind him at a light. The LG lobster gloves aren't warm enough, so I'll need to switch to the MEC ones soon. Still, it is supposed to be 18C tomorrow, so I shouldn't need them.

My morning commutes as always are amazing, light traffic, excellent temps (78-82 F) and just great feeling.

Yesterday going home was typical, crowded agressive traffic (I got bumped by a car when I was stopped at a light). It was 101 F (108 'real feel') - which feels quite cool compared to the hot summer months, glad they are over.

The ride in was so great I just want to ride more, leave work and ride every day for 100mi.

Today's ride was great! Temps in the mid-60s (~19C) and lots of sunshine.

About 1.5 miles from home I caught up with someone who just started bike commuting a few weeks ago. He's a college student and we rode as far as the campus. I cut through the campus to miss the traffic congestion in that area. I had another 4+ miles to go when he turned off. Maybe I'll see him again tomorrow.

WonkerJaw 09-27-05 11:18 AM

I didn't ride today. It was 108 yesterday… but it was a dry heat. I can't believe it is the end of September and we're still having triple digit heat. I'm not strong enough (yet) to ride everyday but still it was a good ride. We are not scheduled to receive a break from the heat until Friday. Maybe it will come early.

Thanks double R. I knew Gion was a geisha district, but I didn't know a maiko was an apprentice. Don't remember it being mentioned in Memoirs of a Geisha.

My commute was great; until I got to campus and realized that I forgot my bike lock! I had to risk it for my first three classes (leaned my bike against a locked bike, so it looked like it was locked), and luckily no one stole my 1998 Gary Fisher. :)

During my 15 min. break, I rushed down to the local bike store and bought the cheapest cable lock they had. Better than nothing, right?

Zin 09-27-05 01:26 PM

Ride home last night was warm enough that I was able to get away with sleeveless jersy and shorts! Its been a couple of weeks since I could do that up here! The temp was 70ish with SSW winds gusting over 30MPH.

Ride is this morning was cool and cloudy against a NNW breeze. It was 44F when I left home. A snow flury moved through around 10:00AM. Its 45F now at nearly 1:30PM.

Ride to and from work was uneventful today. It was a beautiful day to ride, sunny and cool in the morning and sunny and warm this afternoon. Wish every day riding was like this.

eastbaybob 09-27-05 04:07 PM

It was nice this morning, the coolest yet, probably the high 50's. I hit the stop light very well timed, and avoided the school back up by visiting a different street. It took 10 minutes and 9 seconds for the 2.06 mile trip.

gew0419 09-27-05 06:04 PM

I took the "short way" this morning. It's only 3 miles, but it's up and over a good sized hill. It was a lot easier than the last time I went that way. This is the way I will go this winter as it is so much shorter.

I was trucking down this long hill, just before the 1/4 mile up hill, when I saw a coyote off the road about 20 ft. He was watching pretty intently, like he was getting ready to dart across the road and attack something on the other side. As soon as he saw me he turned tail and ran off into the underbrush. I'm kind of glad I was there, because he probably would have gotten hit by a car if I had not scared him away...Scared the bejeezers out of me,too! But at the same time it was pretty cool.

I guess it was a wildlife day for me all around, because on the way home I almost got a squirrel that ran out in front of me. I was on a down hill then, too.
I love my ride, because I almost always have the road to myself since I am going through residential areas and all the cars are on the main roads. I don't, however, have Geishas and 800 year old buildings to look at...how cool would that be?!?

ollo_ollo 09-27-05 06:29 PM

54F at 6 AM today, Sunny & 72F with a light breeze this afternoon. About 5 min into my morning commute, I hit a bump & my "take a look" mirror fell off my glasses. This was a first so I must have not hooked it up right. Took a few minutes walking back slowly with my head light zig zagging to spot it on the shoulder. Traffic seems lighter lately & I'm seeing a few more cyclists in the morning. Chased one for mile or so but they truned off just as I overtook.

postmark 09-27-05 07:47 PM

No Ride today... As I got to the edge of town, the Fog got worse so I turned around and drove today. To many crazy drivers around here when it gets foggy.
