Caloso...we are about 400 miles south of you? Yesterday I rode home.Today drove the car...A new experience for So Cal..Today, I had to idle my car to get the ice off the windows...Did not have that problem with yesteday's bike ride...Just a sudden arctic blast..Weird weather..
Next PM commute..Will spare No gear in order to be preparred.. Observed a first for Southern California...The fans were on at the citrus groves..to keep the oranges from freezing...Been in California 14 years..Never observed that before...So far never seen the smudge pots fired up.. |
rode monday and tuesday this week 25degrees F both days in the morning but warmed ur to 42 on the way home. wind from the north made it feel just as cold as my morning ride. love it ride on.
|
Cold and windy this morning while riding in. At one point I was going down a slight downhill, thought I was traveling quickly despite the wind and happened to look down and notice I was in the middle chain ring, not the big cog as I had thought. haha The headwind fooled me.
Ride home was even cooler. Will break out the long sleeves tomorrow, the Weather Channel is threatening 29 F for the morning ride. Nippy. |
Another stupidly hot morning, but not quite so bad today (only 25 degrees C this time). Also had my first cold shower of the summer before heading out -- about two months later than I normally would. I forgot to mention yesterday's record, passing six cars in a row. No, they weren't gridlocked, I did them all for straight line speed.

Nice weather pattern this week: rain showers at night, overcast in the morning turning to broken clouds & sunbreaks. As I prepared to leave work to commute home for lunch, I passed a co-worker, Brian, repairing a flat on his singlespeed. He had a slow leak on the way in this morning caused by a chunk of glass. I must have ridden through the same patch because I flatted about a mile out from work. Rear wheel! I checked carefully & couldn't find anything still in the tire so stuffed in my spare tube & headed on home only to flat again within about 500 yards. Dang! since I had used up about 1/3 of my lunch hour already & the spare tube had 5 or 6 patches on it, I decided to just ride home on the flat. Found I could maintain about 10-11 MPH. Not bad. Since this was my second 2 flat day in a week, I stopped by the LBS for a new set of tires for the Motobecane. The Gommitalia tires I had been riding had tread left but were covered with cuts & punctures some of which went clear through & probably let road grit, glass etc in to do their dirty work. Got some Michilin Dynamics. Shop owner says he rides them in the Winter so I have high hopes. Don

Been awhile since I have been able to commute to work. The ride in today was really nice, tempature was around 28F, cool and crisp. Light traffic this morning.
|
32 deg. F This is the first freeze of the season here in 'bama. High of 58 today. Happy I bought my mittens and long johns!!!
|
37F and a 20MPH tailwind. Life is good. :)
|
Bright and a crisp 32F. Low wind, low traffic. A very nice ride in today. I just wish they'd finish the 2 month long road construction so I can have my normal route back.
|
Sunny and cold (30°F at home). Still working on getting the right mix of layers. Only wore thermals on the legs and the inner thighs were a bit cold by the time I got to work. Also the toes and finger tips were a bit numb, but everything fine now. Hope y'all have a great day!

I noticed my tire was low before I started; I pumped it up. 8 miles later I was flat. First flat in the 892 miles since July 19th. I was having trouble with my pump when a coworker stopped. I threw my bike in the back of his van and accepted the ride in.
Up to that point the ride was going well. I'll need to fix the flat at lunch, before the ride home. |
another dry day! two in a row, only because i had to go to toledo early yesterday so i didn't ride in the freezing slush. woohoo!
|
I had trouble getting motivated this morning. Once I got going it was all good. On route one cager was pulling out of a driveway and when he did finally see me I must have scared him good because he really hammered on the brakes. Funny though, I thought that he hadn't seen me but I wasn't concerned because I had lots of time to hammer the brakes if I needed to. Only other incident was a van squeezing by me. Probably close enough to smack the window if I wanted. All in all it was a good ride at -7C with no wind. It is supposed to snow and -27C next week so a day like today will feel like a heat wave.

First commute since last thrusday! I got sick and I felt too ****y to ride, even though it woulv'e probably helped me to ride.
I'm so gald I picked it up agian. I was going crazy with the lack of riding time! |
Another gorgeous crisp morning. But I was nearly taken out by a little pickup that veered into the bike lane to pass a left-turner. No real danger but I saw it a little late and I think I was madder at myself for not anticipating that maneuver sooner. Anyway, at the next light I caught up and yelled through the passenger window: "Please don't pass on the right!"
Dull look of non-recognition from both the driver and passenger. As they pulled away, I started to think that they don't speak English. They looked fairly Slavic so I spent the rest of the ride in trying to figure out how to say "Please don't pass on the right" in Russian. Too many verb forms of "to go," too many cases and declensions in Russian grammar! |

The other benefit I just discovered recently is construction zones. There is now a construction zone on my commute and the workers just wave me thru it. It's great. Just gotta watch for things that will give me a flat. |
40F & overcast with dry roads this morning, 46F & mostly clear by my afternoon commute. Switched bikes at lunchtime because of the nice weather & managed a few more miles on the new bike. Don

Very cold for this part of the country this morning. No wind, which made a good difference. I had to wear more of a dress shirt to work, so I wore it over my cycling attire so it wouldn't get wrinkled. Nice and toasty.
|
the high winds we had last night were gone this morning, beautiful, partly cloudy sky for the sunrise, temp just below freezing. Some motorists seem to be "getting It", 2 of them started to right hook me, but stopped and waited for me instead. Is this a case of "holiday spirit" or an outbreak of lawfullness?

Taking off this morning, it was very cold...Thermal T shirt and two layers, I was ok...Wore a 'windstopper'...Glad I have this jacket..Wind was awful..
My trip..A commute..40 miles to Solana Beach to get a birthday gift for my Mom and French Christmas music for my wife... Santa Ana's maybe...Cool crisp, but so clear..Could see the smog of LA, blown way out over the ocean...Far, far away... From Oceanside you could see Torrey Hills climb, must be 20 miles away... Ride felt great...The ocean was a clear as the sky...Could see the reefs on the bottom of the Pacific, way out to sea...Even large fish could see seen from Swami's...Such a nice day and not huge numbers of cyclists...Must have gotten up the the low 60's...have a couple gifts to put under the Christmas tree as a result.. |
Was not one of my better nights. 2nd flat this week. Sunday I decided to patch my extra tube that has had a hole in it since July. I think this jinxed me. Monday night I noticed I had a flat before I even left the office. What a better place ot have a flat. Used the fork lift in the warehouse as a repair stand. Worked great.Turned out that the valve stem was parting from the innertube. Pitched that one and used my extra tube that I was glad I fixed the night before. Tonite, about half way home (3 mile mark), I start feeling a thump thump thump. I get off the bike and all seems ok so I get back out and thump thump thump. I get off again and rotate the tire and come across an 1 1/4" roofing nail. The nail totaled out the tube. Ooops, had not had time to get a back up tube. I get out my cell phone to call the wife. Dead, you gotta charge those things every so often. Walked to a near by business and called the wife to come and get me. I was suppose to be home on time tonite cause the kids were over for supper. Oopps, I missed supper, the wife did pick me up but has not said one word to me since. It's still not that bad. I'll go out tonite and get a couple new tubes and I'll be on the road tomorrow. The wife will get over it and if she don't, I still have my bike. Happy days ahead!

Nice ride to work , But hard ride home . It took a lot longer . But still a good ride . Have a good nite .

Only rode twice this week, Tuesday and Thursday. 35 F both mornings, 55 F evening. My toes were numb when I got to work Tuesday, so on Thursday I put plastic sandwich bags over my socks before putting on my shoes. That worked really well at keeping my feet warm, but there was a little moisture in the bags. Next time I'll poke a few holes in the bags. If it was that cold more often I would get booties.
Some guy yelled "Kick it, baby, kick it!" at me this morning as I was climbing a long hill. I didn't know whether to get mad or laugh out loud. Tom |
Wonderfull ride home yesterday, bright clear skies and a tempature around 48F. Also had a tailwind! That was really nice. Had a few people pull out in front of me but I had plenty of time to react. Besides, I could have more days like that and be real happy.
Ride in this morning was cool again, tempature around 30F. Traffic was a little heavier, but I think that is because I left a little later. |
We had the third warmest November on record. It was a good ease into year round commuting for me. I'm having a tough time justifying the $400 I spent on winter gear as I really haven't needed to use much of it yet. I can't say that’s all bad, I would rather have in and not need it than need it and not have it.
I took the day off from work to head to the library to get some school work done. So I won't be spending as much time on the forum as normal. ;) :D It sucks taking my hard earned vacation time to do homework; but the end of the semester is lurking around the corner. My ride home last night was uneventful. I was trying to push it because I was late. I have found that my average speed has really dropped lately… I’m not sure why? |
sunny and cool (upper 20s), slight following wind on the way in. very refreshing! no verbs for this post...
|
It was a little slick this morning but overall a nice quiet ride. It should be plus 7C today and -20 by wakeup on Monday with snow. So Wulfheir, how's that coldfront coming? Any of the white stuff falling?
|
First commute on the road bike. Not a bad day, about 40 degrees here in NYC. Only a couple of cabbies tried to dive-bomb me on CPW, also about 5mins faster than i've done on the MTB. Of course i'm only going about 5mi, so i can't really expect a huge difference.
