I commute about 6 miles a day. Suburban roads with a few stop signs and almost no traffic...talk about heaven. Today it was snow adn a fairly good wind. Thank God for Gore-Tex.

funbun 11-25-04 10:49 PM

Thanksgiving. No riding.

SaskCyclist 11-26-04 09:12 AM

I was mooned this morning on the way in. It was quite spectacular. Full round and oh so bright. I never realized how much light a full moon can throw. I certainly didn't need a headlight for my own visibility. It was -13C with no wind to speak of. I always enjoy riding on Fridays. Half the people in Regina are on earned days off on Friday. Seriously cuts down on the traffic.

AndrewP 11-26-04 09:22 AM

The first cold morning this winter -13C. Fortunately there was a brisk following wind, but my fingers got cold and my water bottle froze. Beautiful sunrise. Hoping it will be warmer this afternoon when I have to face the wind. Only 1 more bike commuting day before they close the bike path on the bridge over the St Lawrence on 1 Dec.

CommuterKat 11-26-04 05:26 PM

Not quite sure how cold it was this morning, and again this evening, but the water bottle froze on both trips, along with my fingers, cheeks, and nose. The full moon was spectacular though!! Got to ride over some ice patches today for the first time, and had no problems with slippage, thankfully. Realized that I have to organize my cold weather gear the night before, though, as riding in with skinny glove liners sure isn't a whole lotta fun when I knew the whole way in that I have toasty warm lobster claws somewhere in my apartment... Grr...
Can't wait for spring!!!

Bikeless! We drove down to Salem, OR early Thursday Morning in light rain but it was quite nice when we arrived and stayed that way through today when we drove back home with only a few showers along the way. I had accepted the Wednesday forecast for 2 days of rain in Salem so didn't bother to bring along one of my bicycles. (note to self, always bring a bike!). We had a nice visit with my son & his family. Don

Same here, quite beautiful. Very chilly in Alpharetta this morning, below 30 when I left for work. Wore a long sleeve polyester stretchy shirt, with 2 t-shirts and a windbreaker over. Perfectly warm and comfy even with the shorts on. Very nice on the way back, a little warmer.

Alphie 11-27-04 10:30 PM

Chilly riding in for the 12-9 shift. Got to the bottom of a steep hill riding away from home and realized I forgot my headlight battery, left it plugged into the charger. Back up the hill to the house.

I decided, since I arrived near my workplace early, to stop by a bike shop nearby to check out tires. I cut through a supermarket parking lot to get to the shop and ran over some piece of metal. Pull into the parking lot of the shop and my front tire is hissing air. How convenient. So I bought a kevlar belted 700x23 front tire, new tube and they mounted it.

Ride home was uneventful, but pleasantly punctuated with a filet mignon entree. :D

Awesome commute today, gorgeous weather. Got to the light next to a pretty cyclist with a bright jersey and cycling shorts and the sort of road bike you usually only see in rather more upscale dreams; she looked like 53-11's sister. (A marked contrast to the red-haired Scot, a college student with enough backpack that his shocks compress at stoplights.) She let me block the headwinds for a minute or so (at 6' @ 176lb. on a mountain bike with a 40-lb backpack I'm the 4th largest land mammal and block more wind than the Pyrenees) then sped along by.

Almost worth having to be on campus! (PS: Apparently today was bicycle day -- the number of people two-wheeling around Austin today is up.)

Sunday . . . Ahh . . . the day of rest. Unless you're a teacher. Rode in to school today, and for once saw the light of day! With winter hours now, I go to work in the dark and ride home in the dark. God it was SO NICE to ride in daylight. Funny thing though, the drivers were rude today! I guess at 5:30 am people are still too tired to be rude. So there are pros and cons to everything. The weather was sunny but cold! Brrrrr. Great ride in though, now to go home . . . in the dark.

Map tester 11-29-04 07:51 AM

Cool and sunny, about 40°F. Good to be back in the saddle again. Happy trails!

vtjim 11-29-04 07:52 AM

I was a little concerned yesterday because it was raining, getting colder and colder, and we had a howling wind.

But overnight it cleared out and the wind died. Nice commute this morning. The red/orange sunrise was lighting up the Adirondacks across Lake Champlain. Looks like quite a bit of snow in the high peaks.

Low 30s(F) but it felt a lot colder for some reason. High humidity, perhaps. No ice on the trail.

SaskCyclist 11-29-04 08:38 AM

-4C and 25K headwind. I was dreading the commute (eventhough the wind was not that bad) until I got going. Once I was pedalling, all was good. Two other cyclists on the road this morning. Kind of unusual.

cicadashell 11-29-04 08:59 AM

after last wednesday's steady headwind and driving sleet, this morning's dull frost was quite welcome.

on my way in i was scanning the bike lane for hazards and thought i saw crank bolt dust cap, so i turned around to get a better look, and lo! specialites TA! what a find, thought i briefly, until i looked down at my left crank and saw the bolt, exposed, and thought oh...i wonder when that fell off. at least i found it, eh?

billh 11-29-04 09:54 AM

St Louis, rainy, cold, low 40's . . . but I finally broke out my winter gear and was quite dry and comfy. Some old Performance neoprene booties over my running shoes worked nicely, even though the zippers were broken in the back.

caloso 11-29-04 10:18 AM

Cold (33F/1C) and clear. A beautiful morning but I just can't drag myself into work after the long holiday weekend. Already looking forward to the ride home.

mtessmer 11-29-04 11:17 AM

Hmmmm... it was a little chipper out there this morning (22F/-6C and a little snow on the ground) but had a very nice ride in. I finally got my winter bike ready over the weekend and that made a big difference (I've been riding it just as I parked it last spring). It's a sunny day, that sure helps the ol' psyche even though it a little chilly. It should be a good for my lunch run and my ride home after work (which will probably be the highlight of my day).

bmccarthy 11-29-04 11:19 AM

Only went for 1 ride over the holiday weekend. The rest was a couple of footraces-- 6K XC yesterday( set a PR) and a 5 mile in Salem Mass on turkey day---and a few more martinis and bird... Nice to be back putting to rubber to the road...low 40's today a bit windy.

kjorissen 11-29-04 02:18 PM

22F/-6C. After the recent small snowfall I figured there would only be a few spots of the bike path and road covered on my 12 mile commute, thus I didn't swap to the studded tire wheel set. I was right about the total coverage. What I was wrong about was how much you have to respect hard frozen ice ruts. After I just flew over the first couple at roughly 16 mph I just kept doing that. Then there was a nice front wheel diversion and I got to meet the ice up close and personal. No real harm done, a small scrape or two. Just got back on and kept riding. Not enough ice to justify the studded tires but I will be more careful on those ruts.

ollo_ollo 11-29-04 06:47 PM

31F at 5:30AM today when I went down by the lake with my dogs. There was a heavy layer of frost on our deck with some ice on the driveway so I decided to be cautious & drove in. Two colleagues rode in without any problems though and when I went home for lunch, it was a balmy 36F so I put on my heaviest wool sweater with a wool band to warm my ears & put my booties on. Had a comfortable afternoon commute & I was able to put a few more miles on my new bike. Supposed to begin raining tonight so it will be warmer tomorrow. Don

Alphie 11-29-04 10:27 PM

Perfect weather in the high 50's when I went in at 12:00 today. Much cooler this evening coming back at 9:00. Fun rides both ways.

traindabrain 11-30-04 12:35 AM

great ride into work today. cool (36 deg f) but had enough layers to stay warm. traffic was calm, and the morning serene. had a little extra weight today as I was bringing a pail of haystacks to work for people to sample. I had about 36 lbs of extra gear today (carried my laptop as well).

Coming back i was passed by a racer/commuter along Cox Ave, who I then tried to catch up to -- i never see riders on my commute. I caught up, and then we passed another rider/racer/commuter who then tried to catch us. Soon it was a trio of flashing red beacons cruising down the road at a heart-thumping pace. I opted for some drafting relief, and I have to say, this racing/commuting shaved off about 4 min from my average commute time. :D

Well if the guys that were commuting/racing home tonite about 6pm read this, I'm all for group commuting! That was really fun.

Safe riding!

Haven't checked in here for a while, but here goes. A period of re-adjustment for me. 27 degrees C this morning, 26 this evening, and about 169% humidity both times. This from a guy who was throwing snowballs a week ago in the Victorian alps. I've also had to re-adjust to the crazy Gold Coast drivers, and the massive clean up that annually follows schoolies' week in Surfers. Welcome home.

cyclezealot 11-30-04 03:05 AM

Not what So Cal riders are used to....Commute in before sunset was low 40's...Expect the AM commute home to be mid-30's.!! I will freak..Only brought my lighter gloves..Yesterday's AM LA Times said the ride home the following day would be near 40..Could have brought better gear...
Don't see too many other commuter bikers...Too cold? Maybe Indian summer will return, soon. I hope .

CommuterKat 11-30-04 07:38 AM

Had to skip commuting yesterday as I had to be in to work at 4:15am... But, back on the bike today. The weather has been holding with cool temps that don't freeze my face lately which is a nice change. Sunshine today for my ride in later this afternoon, and I think the temps are around high 30's to low 40's F.

And, welcome back Chris L!!

vtjim 11-30-04 08:14 AM

25(F) degrees this morning. Brisk. I think it's almost time for a balaclava.

Tomorrow morning will be the crucible. Snow & rain forecast. We'll see how I do. Might switch to my (very un-equipped) ratty MTB. No luggage. No light. No blinkies. Might have to outfit her in a hurry.

cicadashell 11-30-04 08:35 AM

just damp and grey. mid-30s. november blah. but it is always good to be on the bike!

madhouse 11-30-04 08:36 AM

22F with an 8mph headwind, and my legs didn't feel up to it. My average speed was way down.

I had to drag myself out of bed, I was already chilly so I put an extra layer on... Big mistake, I was to warm.

Even with all of the fore mentioned grumbling, It was a great commute and I feel much better for it! First commute since Thanksgiving. Looking forward to the ride home!

michaellmn 11-30-04 08:56 AM

This is my first post to the forum after lurking at the site for a week or two...great site.

21F/-6C this morning with a 7mph wind from the southwest. I've been wearing windproof/waterproof bike pants and jacket with shorts and a T-shirt underneath - a little chilly for the first five minutes or so. I have about a five-mile commute into work. The sky was clear, moon was up and the traces of oranges and reds in the east as I biked in - beautiful. I look forward to the commute home. Contrast that with the BBC article I saw this morning that compared commuter stress to the stress experienced by fighter pilots in battle and riot police. Oh, boy!
