"Nuff respect" (as we say in the UK) to the cycling fraternity on the other side of the pond. You can count on one hand the times in a year that, in London at least, the mercury dips below 0°C / 32°F.
At the moment, we're having a balmy spell, relatively speaking - temperatures at about 10°C / 50°F. I suppose the quid pro quo is that we do get a lot of wind (especially when cycling nearby the Thames - I'm pedalling hard to stand still at times), and a fair bit of rain. But snow and ice, thankfully, are rarer than hen's teeth in these parts... :) Matt |
No bike commute today since I'm hoping to get a bunch of errands done at lunch time. (Probably driving a total of 25 miles.) Oh well, gotta do what one's gotta do.
|
For the first time in, oh, I guess about 6, or so, weeks, I saw whitetails this morning. Saw 4, one alone, and three together.
Bumper hunting crossed my mind, but there were two major problems with that. 1) I was in the wife's car. 2) She was driving. Had to take some stuff to work this morning that a bike, even with my flatbed trailer on, just wouldn't have cut the mustard. Gonna' have to drive again tomorrow, too, but Thursday I'll be back on the bike. Friday I haven't decided, if I go to work I'll ride, but leaning toward taking the day off. |
41degF, lite wind(brease), going in was great on road commuter (snow/ice almost cleared). PM home, i went to local flower shop, got a rose, and went for a 1 hour extended ride, including visit my wife's work (d/o rose as well)!
i did not see one (1) other bicyclist in my 1.25 hr commute/rides. the traffic on sherman ave was congested 1/2 mile each way at the blvd 4way stops. the people were stuck in the vehic of "choice". delsea dr was simular. i felt a little more free today, glad to be on my bike! here's to health and happy v-day!! |
Great ride to work and home. It was warm today, It had to be 40f out . I hope the rest of the week is this warm .
Have a good nite . |
Last night's commute home was one of those trips--- the kind where everyone seemed to cut me off and almost run me the road. Ugh. This morning was alot better though, around 30f with a tailwind, and best of all, no jackass drivers.
(edited for grammar) |
Had a guy pull into the gutter to prevent me from filtering up to a right hand turn. What a jerk.

First commute of the week and the roads are all mostly clear but the ride really wasn't fun. As I've stated in other posts, I ride a full on rodie and I need to cross two bridges to get work. One of them was completely unplowed/shoveled in spots so I had to use the hand rail to keep from falling over. I've come to realize that I need another bike :D, an intermediate bike, something to transition from light snow/slush to dry pavement. I actually have a Specialized Sirrus with Disc brakes that might do the job. I got it second hand so I need to take a look at it, but some nice cyclocross nobbies and flat pedals may work well. Wifey was on the "I spend too much money on bike stuff" rampage, hence the bike not being winterized . |
Just about 32F/0C and another headwind blowing off the lake at 25MPH this morning.
I'm happy to be on the touring bike again. Fast & silent. Just the whisper of the tires on the pavement. Easy to sneak up on old ladies and pass them at 30MPH with inches to spare. (kidding!) :p |
Beautiful. Great temperatures in the low 40's, enough clouds not to be bright, and very little traffic.
|
First commute in two weeks... 1+ weeks off for vacation, then my usual offsite stuff yesterday. Planned on driving part way and riding the rest, but was too lazy this morning to deal with loading and unloading, so I decided to ride the whole way. Mid-50's when I started (was in the 20's while I was out of town last week!) with decent winds that, at times, were in my face, but nothing too terrible. Made good (for me) time and feel great. Traffic seemed to be much lighter than usual - maybe a bunch of Valentine's hangovers - is there such a thing???

It's going to be a beautiful day. Temps will be in the mid 60's in the afternoon. |
its been nice out this week, monday and tuesday were in the 40's, today was almost normal ! =)
Yesterday, on the way home, a lady makes a u-turn in her convertible and decides to yell at me .. so I caught up to her when she got stuck at the next light, and I gave her a few kind words ! LOL YEAH !happy valentines day Stupid ***** ! lol |
Had a nice ride in this morning. It wasn't as cold today, upper 30s and I get to ride into the sunrise. When I got to the parking lot at work and was walking to my building one of the guys who works downstairs told me I was a brave man for riding in traffic around here :D Should be a great ride home, predicting temps in the 60s this afternoon.
|
Great ride in today, 33F plus a tailwind. Much better than the 16F/headwind combo on Monday. I'm seeing more and more bike commuters out there.
|
Nice ride in... about 22, breezy and some light snow sparkles in the headlight beam. Left early, so the whole ride was in the dark, and without much traffic. Snow is forcast for this afternoon, should be a fun ride home !

Very nice weather: Sunny, mid-40s (F), and a bit of a breeze. I rode the fast bike today and my legs responded. That's always a nice feeling.
Last night on the way home, I stopped to buy some Valentine tulips for my wife. The motorists on the rest of the way home were very respectful. Coincidence? Probably not. My theory is that if they see a guy on a bike carrying flowers it clicks for them that he's a person with someone who cares about him, and not some obstacle to be gotten around or run over. Maybe I'll carry flowers home every night. |
This morning was my first ride in about a week and a half. First ride on my new bike too (a Kona Jake) -- much faster than the old mountain bike.
Uneventful trip, but wonderful weather: about high 30s, with a light breeze. |

An uneventful commute on a nice day. I also had a nice pre-breakfast ride.
|
It was nice this morning, maybe low 60's no wind and bright and sunny. It took about 10 minutes to get to the office.
|
Another pleasant ride in today in bright sunshine and frosty air. Only my third ride in and I'm 10 minutes faster over the 30km. It was good to arrive in town at the same time as the train I would have taken. With a riding time of 66 minutes it looks as though I'll be setting 1 hour as my benchmark time once I am back up to my normal speed.

I had my first major bicycle crash today on my way to work....I let my attention slip for a second and went a little too fast around a curve that I've been around a hundred times. My front tire hit some road salt (around here folks salt like crazy if it even sprinkles in February) or some gravel as I tried to recover and down I went at around 15 - 20 MPH. The curve is on a little down grade and I'm usually going close to 30 MPH when I get to the bottom. I've got a sweet set of road rash down my left side and my helmet was cracked completely through in not one but two places, but other than that I'm pretty much ok. I went down on the non drive side and the bike (Trek 4300 with slicks) is absolutely fine as best I can tell. My backpack containing my clothes and laptop was in a milk crate zip tied to my rear rack. The milkcrate got completely ripped off the rack and the backpack came out of the crate, but amazingly, I'm typing this post on the laptop. It booted right up just fine when I got to work. After the crash I remounted and rode the final mile to work and cleaned my wounds, then got a lift to my LBS at lunch to get a new helmet. The commute home was pleasant...nice and slow.
I'm sure I'm going to be sore tomorrow, but if I hadn't been wearing a helmet I would be in the hospital right now. I know I'm preaching to choir here but ALWAYS WEAR A HELMET! P.S. And YES there was a group of people exercising in the field next to the road, so I had an audience. I'm sure they had a good laugh when they realized I wasn't dead. |
39 Degrees this morning with a 7 MPH headwind, made for a slow trip to work. Coming home it was 2 degrees warmer and only a 6MPH headwind. Why is the wind always against me this week? I usually have a tailwind at least one way. I stopped for a cyclist I saw taking off his wheel, thinking he flatted, but he was just taking the wheel off to put it in his car. I guess he's a lunchtime rider. My clipless pedals and shoes arrived today. I'm giving up the toeclips and joining the 20th century 6 years after it ended. ;) I keep my toeclip straps tight and loosen them by rotating my foot, so it seemed natural when I tried out the clipless pedals tonight. I can't wait for tomorrow's commute. Even though they predict a headwind...sigh.
|
Warm out today,It had to be 40f. It was a great ride to work & home. I hope That I can make five days of commuting this week . Have a good nite .
|
My ride home was a bit colder than expected since I left a lot later than expected. Oh well, it wasn't too bad, though having my head and ear covering would have been nice tonight. Aside from the slightly chilly conditions (for what clothing I had), a nice, brisk ride home and a chance to destress and unwind. :)
|
Mid 20Fs this morning and a light tailwind to give me a couple of extra MPH. I was approaching a trail/road intersection and an "older" couple (retirees) were walking on the sidewalk. I was preparing to stop for them at my stop sign and the woman said, "It's clear, you can go through." Ha. Old folks telling me to blow through stop signs. Amusing. I thanked her, but slowed up anyway and verified her statement before continuing. :)
Springtime conditions yesterday and today. Not tomorrow though! Supposed to drop rapidly into the single digits (F), and this alert popped up on my screen this morning: ON FRIDAY...SOUTHWEST TO WEST WINDS WILL INCREASE TO 25 TO 40 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 60 MPH BY MIDDAY AND CONTINUE INTO THE EARLY EVENING HOURS BEFORE GRADUALLY DIMINISHING. That's a tailwind for my ride home! :p |
We got a few inches of snow over night, which has packed nicely on the roads; many icy sections, and several where the packed snow slid around on the layer of ice on the road surface. The snow did lots of steering for me. Not much traffic, and it was very slow, but so was I! On top of all that, the university I work at is actually closed for the day due to dangerous weather conditions (too bad the radio station I listen to in the morning didn't mention that...).
Probably shouldn't have picked the ride, but I would have had to clean the snow off two cars and shuffle them around. I was hoping that the roads would be slushy at worst by the time I went home for lunch, but I guess I'll be back out there in a few minutes. Safe riding for everyone else who's having the same fun that I am riding today! |
Second commute of the week after last weekends snow storm and things were much better. Yesterdays big melt really helped, but I decided to give my normal commute one more day to thaw. Today I rode along the Charles River which is a semi-off road experience with tree roots growing beneath the concrete slabs which make the path.
Reality Check: This New England weather has been a real guessing game when it comes to clothing. 39°F this morning, can you say....."OVERDRESSED" :( |
Nice and cool, 44°F, broken clouds and nice red sun at my back. Made good time in, and it should be about 68°F for the ride home. Bicycling Mag. may say we are in the worst city for cycling, but I'll argue that we do have some fine weather sometimes. :p
