If I had driven to work today, I'd have shot a whole bunch of people. The commute was filled w/ numbskulls randomly turning, stopping in the middle of traffic, changing lanes, crossing the street and being general nuisances. One woman even bodily tried to make room for herself by nudging my bike while waiting for a line of school girls to cross the street going the other way. Some people just need to be knocked on their asses to get them off their high horse.

Beautiful ride in this morning. 60, count 'em, 60 degrees of Fahrenheit love for me.
My L&M light wasn't charged - I'm guessing I didn't seat the plug fully, but I knew when I picked it up and it wasnt' warm that something was up. Still, there was enough light in the predawn that I had no qualms about hooking up the backup cateye and rolling in. The bugs along the river are almost back in their full glory. Bandana and clear glasses to keep the various orifi clear. I notice a lot of green bug guts smudges on my shorts this morning. Day 3 of the no-chamois challenge. I added an extra 10 to the ride home last night, and I might be starting to get a slight pressure sore on one side. Don't feel it after the first half mile, though. I'll take a look and reevaluate tonight. |
I think it was right around freezing today. I was able to ride sans balaclava for the first time in ages. A little more snow needs to be cleared off the roads, then I'll be able to go back to skinny tires. Hurrah!
|
Not a great day. I was running a bit late and then found I have picked up yet another slow leak in my front tire. I briefly thought about driving in today, but realized that it would take more time to change and drive then just put some air in.
There was a fender bender on the main street near my house, so traffic was backed way up. Bike lane was clear and I passed the cop trying to get to the accident. |
It was clear right above me, but all around were clouds, the ground was a bit damp from overnight rains. It took about 10 minutes to get to the office.
|
Today's ride was short (I only live a mile from work) and the sun is a shining, I think the temp was around 23F or so, and all went well till I went to change..
And brought everything but my boxers! So today the office chair is surprisingly more plush and comfortable, and with the only down side that no matter how tight my belt is, the pants want to slide right off the shorts (yes, it is 23 out, so the shorts are on under the PI pants for the ride) just had to share. So... how often does everyone forget a key piece of clothing? In warmer times I keep a full change of clothes tucked in a desk drawer, but apperantly I didn't refill after the last memory lapse, ah well, half way done, and now it will take no time to change for the trip home! |
Scene from this morning's commute:
So, tooling I was, along the river path, feeling very peaceful - serene, even - admiring the sunrise, listening to the ducks, and feeling the riparian bugs glancing off my clear glasses, when up ahead I see two columns of runners, in step and wearing matching PT gear, heading my way. ROTC? Reserves? Dunno, the colors they're wearing don't have any obvious association. I hear the faint wail of cadence called, "lo-radda-layo", and I start to wonder if they're prepared for a fast mover going against their flow. As I get closer, the leader makes like Moses and each column moves to either side of the bike path, I hear the leader chant, "Good Morning, Sir", followed by the whole platoon, "GOOD MORNING, SIR!!" . As I split their columns, I stood my peaceful, serene arse right up on my Eggs and bellowed, "OOOOHRAH! Pray for WAR!" Whoever they were, there were a few claps and hoots offered up as I pedaled off... |
Wonderful commute today, until the end. Raining slightly, but just enough to keep me cool. Got to work, was in the parking lot going around to the back of the office building and appreciating the quietness of my new fixie. Going around the corner of the building and WAMM! Wheels right out from under me. Now I've got a good sized bruise on my leg and tore my handlebar tape.

as I left the house this morning about ten minutes later than I had planned to, I cursed myself once again for not beating the morning rush hour. but it wasn't nearly as bad as it usually is. a little backup at the one light I cross, but no big deal. I was behind a bus for about half of the commute in which of course meant decreased wind resistance. really smooth ride in.
I did an 10 mile or so ride around town and the trail before heading back home through an 18MPH headwind. great ride back other than the headwind. |
great, eventless, clockwork, sharing, acclimate, "far-fig-neug-gahn" day, to/from!
only issue is attempting to program new cheap odometer (i can live with that!) |
Good ride to work & home. Have a good nite .
|
Raining pretty heavily going in this morning, with a headwind. I must have looked nuts smiling all the way to work. I'm thankful for breathable raingear. Ride home was dry and uneventful. Work is just the 12 or 13 hour interruption in the middle of my ride. :D

rode over to a meeting in Somerville, cutting through Cambridge from Newton. Nice ride. Nice change from the usual ride. Made excellent time over there and on the way back wandered through old neighborhoods where I used to live. Amazing how riding the bike triggered the memory- it was weird riding by the old house where I first rented an apartment when moving to Cambridge 26 years ago. I remembered hauling my bike onto my shoulder and bombing up the stairs and locking it on the back porch as if it were yesterday.

Awesome ride this AM.
I saw a guy on a tall bike made out of 2 cruiser frames ! IT WAS SO AWESOME to actually see someone else riding this type of thing... !! I didn't get a chance to talk to him, but if I see him again I certainly will make a point to stop and ask him about it. |
Tried out my new, longer commute this morning, as I wanted to stop at the library on the way to work (don't actually start the new job until 2 weeks from today). About 13 minutes one-way, and I was taking it slow for about a third of the ride due to black ice. More than double my current ride, but I won't likely be making it home for lunch too often, so only one round-trip daily instead of two. :(
|
Slower ride in this morning. Was out late last night and had a few  But I didn't let it get to me and was on the bike today. Pretty cold for around here, just under freezing but going to be in the 60s this afternoon. I am going to take a ride at lunch to the post office to send a package to my brother over in Iraq. He is scheduled to come back next month :)
|
Ended up being rather nice. Forecast was wrong, so I had a bright blue sky. Traffic wasn't too much, though a few people passed me a bit closer than I would have liked. For my ride home I will be taking a route that is twice as long, but paved bike trails the entire way.
|
Bright, bright, bright sunshiny day! :)
I was crazy slow on the bike today. There's something wrong with my rear brake, so I have to make sure I get that looked at tonight. I am very tempted to switch back to skinny tires for the extra speed and better gearing. The cagers can sense spring around the corner - they're getting more aggressive and driving faster. I need to do the same thing! :D |
A pretty nice ride this morning. Temps in the low teens F. We're going through freeze/thaw cycles with the snow so in the afternoon it's packed but soft and nice to ride on, but in the morning it's like riding on rough cement, with areas of crunchy re-frozen slush.
The rest of the week is going to be interesting. Supposed to start raining and be fairly warm, with temps in the 50s on Friday. It should wash off most of the trail snow. |
Nice ride again today, all the College brats are gone so most of the "tooling" commuters and horse blinder street crossers are nowhere to be seen :D. I have plans for a weekend ride so I rode in slightly different gear today as a test run. Although I was warm, I found things to be a bit restrictive on the up-stroke...oh well, back to the drawing board.
|
I came to work and hour early, so took a different and quicker route into the office. Very clear with a pleasant chill in the air. It took about ten minutes to get to the office.
|
On the way home last night I snapped the chain on my fixie. I should have known: I used an old chain and I'd broken it so many times to get the length right that I must have severely weakened it. Lucky for me it happened on a flat street without much traffic. And lucky for me that my wife was able to come get me.
This morning's ride was beautiful. We're in a gap between Pacific storms so the sky is brilliant and clear. Once again I was wondering to myself why doesn't everybody in Sacramento ride a bike to work? |
This morning was clear, brilliant and cold at just below freezing. We got a ton of rain last night and then it froze solid so there was ice everywhere. I tried to pull an illegal left turn and almost paid for it in blood due to the ice. The front wheel slid a bit but I miraculously recovered. Slight tailwind, everything was alright in my world for 30 minutes.
|
I worked from home the first hour of the day, I had a doctor appointment so I rode to that and then onto work. Spring was in the air, I wanted to take a longer route but thought I'd better get to the office. I got here fifteen minutes early... dang, I knew I should have taken that longer route. Awwww, I'll do a long run at lunch and take the long way home.
|
I ride to work every day that I can, but other obligations kept me from riding in on Monday and Tuesday, and will keep me from doing so on Thursday. So, I decided to make up for some of it today.
I had a meeting at 10 o'clock this morning in downtown DC, pretty close to where I live, and I could have started late and just ridden there. Instead, though, I did my regular commute (10 miles) out to the office in Alexandria, VA. Then I rode to the meeting in DC (10 miles) and back to work (another 10 miles), and I get to ride home again this evening (another 10 miles). So, twice my usual mileage today! The weather is beautiful (mid-50s and sunny), I've got some new wheels on my bike, and I'm feeling really great. |
Rain, snow, wind AND pissed off drivers.
|
Good ride to work and home . But hard day at work .
Have a good nite . |
38F with rain & wind at 6 AM this morning but I made good time into work through the light traffic. By lunch time there was heavy rain mixed with snow and side winds gusting enough to make it hard to hold my line & stay upright. I wimped out & drove back to work for the afternoon. Supposed to be higher winds tonight & more snow mixed with rain.

Beatiful ride this AM !
I noticed a few police cruisers all around me as I rode to work... then I noticed a little kid playing on the railroad tracks... then I noticed that he was not playing. He was trying to run away from the cops ! Anyway... I crossed a major intersection and about half way down the next block I hear sirens ... so I look back and I see a cop making a u-turn ... when I turned to look front again, i'm going sideways into the sidewalk.. OOPS ! I went flying over the sidewalk and ended up on the other side in the grass !! =) My right knee did not make it that far, so I got a little road rash. I was going 15 mph when I went down, and I wear a full face BMX helmet but It never touched the ground. =) EDIT: The bike made it out ok, just a little scratch on the seat, and a little scratch on the 3T track bars =) |
At least you are still alive and in one piece. :)
Finally! I was able to commute this morning for the first time since last Thursday. My cold would have let me commute yesterday but the rain and snow made me rethink that idea. No need to become sicker. Anyhow, the commute was nice and slow this morning interspersed with hacking fits. Nothing clears up the lungs and throat from a cold like a good cool bike ride. Now I feel much better. |
