Nice ride home yesterday, rode home with a newly recruited commuter to show him the ropes a little and show him a different route that I use.
No ride today cuz we're shopping for a house BIG TIME and found one close to work I wanted to look at. We got an offer and accepted it yesterday and are now on pins and needles to see if the net out is going to work for us, keep your fingers crossed for me! Housing market in Albuquerque is insane right whiterabbit!?! |
I guess my post about the commute today was deleted... that's weird.
anyway, I was up late last night because I was running a show in VA the night before and it ended really late so I had a hell of a time getting up this morning and was therefore running late. but boy if there was ever a day to be running late this was it... this was probably one of the fastest commutes I've ever done. a light I usually wait at forever was green as I was approaching it so I was able to stay at speed going through the intersection. awesome! after class I rode over to downtown CP to run some errands then to the metro station to check out the bike locker I'll be renting soon. then home through a pretty stiff headwind (so that's why I was so fast this morning). that slowed me up a little bit. oh well. fun ride home though, for sure. |
I couldn't imagine being outdoors, attempting to breathe in a "haboob" I had a great commute all the way around today... Mostly respectful cagers, even a few smiles and waves! No flats, beautiful weather... said "hi" to a commuter that pulled up to me while at a red light, he said 'hi' looked both ways and went through the red  I waited for the green light... saw another femme commuter YAAY!!! while I rode home... I was singing aloud as I approched a few peds along the way... they all smiled :) |
Lots of heavy rain and standing water everywhere, I could see the just the tops of park benches and rubbish cans to my left as I avoided countless ducks and geese along the muddy river path in Brookline. If it doesn't let up soon, the bike path will be under by morning. I don't mind riding through some shallow water, but there are slimy sticks under there it can be challenging. I once "splashed down" while riding a flooded path because of an unknown submerged entity.

My first Minneapolis commute!
My bikes (finally) arrived from Anchorage a week or so ago and I had to invest in a lock because I used to be able to keep my bike in the office, but not so at the IDS Center. It's a trip to park at the IDS Center (the biggest sky scraper in Minneapolis). There are bike racks in the ramp beneath the building. To get there, you have to go into the ramp like a car, spiral around as you go deeper into the basement, squeeze by the gate and then toodle through a parking garage to the rack. It was fun to have a big SUV behind me as I descended. Lots more traffic than Los Anchorage but it is managable. I will look for a longer, more scenic and quieter route for the ride home (probably River Road) but in the early morning, the run straight up Park Ave. seems fine. WoooHoooo... back in the saddle again! |
man, that haboob looked ominous!
here in the Northeast it was constant heavy, heavy sheets of rain all day long. We've been getting soaked lately so the water has no where to go. Rode through foot deep puddles on the bike path. It was like a mountain bike trail with stream beds for my ride today. Strong winds- a real Nor'easter. Didn't wear my little ankle gaiters and paid the price with wet tops of my socks. And my REI rain jacket, that I just washed in special $9 detergent and sprayed with special $12 waterproofing, did me little good with what was basically like swimming on the bike the rain was so heavy.

GT -- the truck thing -- I know what you're talking about. Same thing happened to me last week. |
Holy shiat at the dust storm!
Anyways, great commute today, I manage to shorten the time from 30 minutes when I first started to just over 20 minutes, and I also managed to climb the "unclimbed" hill on my morning commute. To RonH, I hope she gets well soon, I have a grandma, and everytime I heard any older person fell, my heart skipped a bit. |
don't wipe your nose on the back of your hand
use your sleeve like a civilised man - michael marra, angela gunn i biked to work today despite it being a baseball day. had a vague intimation this morning that it might be a mistake, what with the game location and the hard deadlines looming at work and all that, but eh. when it came down to it i just couldn't convince my morning brain that all that automotive to-do would result in a smoother day, whatever the last-night logic told me. so i biked. still very very nice commuter weather, in the mornings at least. clear and sunny, but still cool enough to give you goosebumps for the first couple of miles. then by the time they wear off, you don't notice the heat until you stop moving and producing your own climate-control. going down that bike path in the mornings feels exactly like swimming in a lake: there's always just enough of a headwind tunnelling up it to give you the same resistance you'd get from water, and it has the same sudden little patches of cold and heat that lakes will give you. that feeling of being in cool water when you're over-hot, and letting it carry your body heat off . . . ride home was warmer, of course, and it had some pressure on it. i made it home in good time though, and i don't think i hurt anything. then i traded the tights in for jeans and wore my hhcmf shirt to the game. just in case suv-lady was gonna be there, and she was :D only missed the first three innings, and by the looks of the score i didn't miss much. tomorrow i'll probably rest. that's what i'm saying now, anyway. |
Hoped to see the sunrise from my bike but just couldn't get out of the house in time (4:47 am). Warmer than yesterday but still jacket weather. Saw a flattened hedgehog on the way out of the city -probably due some kid on a moped...

Gonna try my new Lake sandals. Hope I like them. |
A nice ride again this morning. This afternoon there is a 60% chance of thunder showers, so I might be quite soggy by the time I get home...

Tie-Dye Never Again
I learned that tie-die shirts though bright are not good for commuting. I had been wearing bright orange t-shirts and tank tops for my commute with no problems the last month. I seam to get an extra measure of respect when I wear a solid orange shirt. I ran out of clean ones and decided to wear a bright tie-dye tank top. OOPS! I was cut off at an intersection and later a gas-guzzling SUV driver honked repeatedly and motioned me to get of the road. I just smiled and waved.

Way too much festivity last night. Didn't get much sleep. Not feeling all that well. Grannies on three-wheelers could have dropped me and given The Look. Fortunately the rain kept everyone off the trail.
Mid 60F temperatures. Wildlife: Snapping turtle swimming. Domestic cat skulking in high grass. Heard a pileated woodpecker whacking a tree. Herds of squirrels. |
Another wet commute and nearly right hooked for the second time this week. I was riding through the "danger section" of my commute and I contiously slowed as I followed a black pick-up, I was in the bike lane. Wouldn't you know at the last second he decided to bang a hard right. I was expecting this too, but it still caught me out a bit. I hit brakes, locked the rear and put my hand out to use his truck to avoid falling. He stopped, I rode past tossing my hand in the air saying WTF! Other than that, a decent ride.

Huge nasty headwind on the ride home last night. It was 30 with gusts to 50 due to an impending storm. Some guy commuting on a MTB was determined to pump me off every time we came met at an intersection. I just waited until we hit the long stretch directly into the wind, laid down into the drops, and left him blocks behind hucking a lung. Silly boy !
Nice ride in this morning. Weather was 62 and beautiful sunny calm. I got tons of rest stops... every freakin signal in the world was red. Some of them are long lights. Oh well. That would drive me nuts in the car, but on the bike, who cares. I don't have a fixed schedule at work anyways, so I can get there whenever I feel like it. [some mornings that's a bad thing]. |
Hmmm. My post from yesterday is missing. Had drizzle today, which cleared up about 1 block from the house. No drama on the ride in.
|
It's getting harder and harder to post here in the morning.
Drizzle ended a block from the house, no drama other than that. |
Nice ride in today, it always feels good to get back on the bike after a day not riding...I took the short route in, as it's kind of a rest day. Tomorrow I'm climbing the biggest hill we have (about 14 miles, only 1 of which isn't uphill :-) about a 5,000 foot elivation gain. Then Saturday is the Albuquerque Century. This will be my big test to see if I'm going to survive in Colorado on the BTC.

my bf is car free, commutes 24miles rt daily to the bike shop where he works.
He had some stuff to take care of today so was going to work later than usual.. I told him he could take my car if he wanted to... He just called me here at my office... car won't start... he thinks it's the battery.... http://www.one2ride.org/Animation/laught.gif |
First Commute in Semi-Wet
The ride in today went quite well. Only one car got a little to close to the curb and I had to squeeze by. This was my first day commuting in in the semi-wet. It wasn't raining, but it had earlier this morning and the roads were wet. I don't have fenders but there was so little water on the road it didn't matter. I did get a little road spray on my bags and such. Very nice ride. Overcast and cool the whole way.

Today I had my first commute in in the semi-wet. It wasn't raining, but it did rain earlier in the morning, and the roads were still wet. I don't have fenders on my recumbent, but all that happened was I got a little road spray on my bags. No big deal. Good fast ride though. Only one car got a little close to the curb and I had to squeeze by.

Nice, quick ride this morning. My new Power Grips came in, but I haven't had a chance to install them yet. Good luck on the house New Roadie!

Wow! Those ærial photos of the haboob are awesome.
I hoped to see the sunrise from my bike but 5 am proved to be just too late... Warmer than yesterday but still jacket weather. I saw a flattened hedgehog on the ride home -probably due some kid on a moped. I hope things turn out okay for your mother-in-law, RonH. |

not nearly as fast a commute in as yesterday. I had a headwind coming in and it slowed me up pretty good. the last few days the traffic has been heavy enough at the time I ride in so that I can usually kind of blend in, but today I had a significant amount of cars passing me. no one passed too close so it was all good. one guy tried to pass me on the right then got back behind me and passed me on the left in the turn lane. a good, if slower-than-usual ride in.
of course on the way back that headwind turned into... another headwind. didn't do any extra riding, just headed home. took it really easy going up the big hill. the ride back was slow but still good. |

We finally got home from the doctor, then ER, then the pharmacy about 8:50 PM. What a way to waste a day. After yesterday I REALLY needed to ride today. And the ride was awesome. |
Server ate my morning post :(. In short I rode, almost got right hooked, I survived to ride another day
|
My "normal" commute route is getting chewed up for repaving (that's actually a good thing, believe me), so I took the slightly longer ride home. A little windy, sure, but temp was good, so I just went down a gear and enjoyed the ride!

Back commuting after a 6 week gap. This job may last a while and is a half mile from where the wife works, 21 miles from home. We both start early in the morning so I drive her to my job with the bike on the car. She drops me off and goes to her work. At 3:15+PM I bike for home. The motorists have not gotten much better in the last 6 weeks. Saw 18 others riding; almost all of them in the last 3 miles.
