Light snow here this morning. Good thing is, it was dry snow. Enjoyed the ride a lot. I love riding in light snow with little accumulation.

Today was my first round trip commute of the year! I don't ride at night, so during the winter, I ride to work in the morning (14 miles) and take the Metro home at night. Looks like those days are over!

Ride in was nice. The sun is starting to come up near the end of my commute in. It was too warm for my booties this morning. Spring is coming, I hope. Ride home was fast and uneventful. Got home to see my new HHCMF shirt has arrived. Made my day, Eggplant Jeff. Thanks.

0-fer this week. Dr. appointments (mine and my son's) cost me 2 of 3 days, and I chickened out Wednesday due to the cold weather (not so cold, really, but 30 degrees colder than my last ride last week.) I'm a wimp who sometimes manages to overcome adversity; this week was not one of those times. So I spent too many hours on the treadmill at the gym this week.
Got my Nashbar shipment yesterday, so can get started returning my 84 Trek to roadworthy status. Haven't ridden it in almost 20 years, and it needs a bit of TLC. New toobs, tires, bar wrap, a cleaning and clean/lube the chain, and I'll be able to see if I remember how to ride a road bike. Might be able to get the commute going on that next week - need to replace the pedals, as the bearings are almost completely frozen, but that's quick/easy once I decide whether I can afford to go clipless or not. Can't wait! I will be back on the bike Monday... |
Ride home last night was a game of lets not get hit, seriously had 4 incidents that spiked my heartrate. Today will be better. If it is worse I will be taking a ride in the big white van with more blinkies than me.

Warm 45F this morning w/ highs in the 50's forecast which meant wearing a spring jacket instead of the winter shell I've worn daily since the day I got it 5 months ago. Left the gloves at home, but brought in a 40 pack box of oatmeal to last me for a couple months. Didn't even notice it was back there. The spring weather is bringing some commuters with it as there's 3-4 unfamiliar bikes parked outside.

My commute was more like a leisure ride that ended at work. Long with plenty of breaks.
I had a crappy day at work yesterday and was still annoyed this morning. Consequently, I decided to skip the route shortening method of using the bus for part and rode the 35 miles into work. 2hrs and 45 minutes later I'm at work. yippie :( It's nice having a flexible schedule. I felt much better around 20 miles. Coincidentally, this is when I started running low on energy. Apparently exhaustion has a nice calming effect on me. |
"Ice Fog" was the forecast today, but it was more of a drizzle/pea-soup kind of experience. There were no altercations with vehicles, pedestrians or other bikers. I also got a raise and a new senior position at my company. :D

Beautiful day, but for some reason I was really tired on my way to work. Guess I need to ride more.
|
No Commute today, had to drop the wife off at the Hospital for a blood test. I saw fixed gear courier slicing through traffic like nobodys business. I actually think he trying to piss off cagers because traffic was so backed up.

I think your problem is the "on my way to work" part. I'm betting you are much faster on the way home. :p |
awsome ride home yesterday, was feeling really good, and the weather was great (65 degrees) so I rode in shorts, and jersey with vest, very pleasent. I took my long route (20 miles) home, first time i've riden it going home, It takes me through the university, there are lots of nice looking co-eds out this time of year in the afternoon :-) made awsome time, and was tailed for a while, and then rode with and chatted with an older guy (think he might be a professor), who's been riding for about a year, (a little shorter than when i got really heavy into road riding) so we shared stories, methods for keeping warm during winter rides, etc. Nice to get to know someone who commutes daily! :-) I'm sure I'll see him again.
I ended up pushing it pretty hard because at first I was trying to drop him, and then once I realized he was gonna keep pace with me, I wanted to make sure it was a good pace :-) probably good for both of us to push a little hard (at least I hope he was pushing it! :-) Ride in this morning was awsome, i work a shorter day on Fridays, so I left the house later than normal, and the sun was coming up, GREAT time of year to be riding ;-) |

Another nice morning, almost warm and clear skies. It took about ten minutes to get to the office.
For the week I was 5 of 5 for bike commutes. For the year I am at -1 for bike commutes, in that on only one day I have not biked to work. |
During my ride home I am able to really view the neighborhood. At the light I like to make comments to the drivers, of really old cars( " hoopdees") Do you want to race? I can get a good head start. It is better than a cup of coffee.

Worst case of honking I've ever experienced.
This big pushy alpha male protecting his female. Those dang Canada geese are really annoying. :D |

dang. my first commute to work. it's only five miles each way--up from the bottom of Manayunk and through Wissahickon park to Chestnut Hill (outskirts of Philadelphia)--but what a five miles! on the way to work I have to crank uphill 90% of the way, and these hills are absolute knee-busters on my single speed. the ride home is mostly downhill, but cranking up out of the park is gnarly. I changed the gearing to 42/17, but this is not adequate. I'm thinking that maybe I'll have to put some gears on the old donkey if I'm going to bike to work, which means I'll have to pick up a frame to put the fixed gear parts on ('cause I love riding around town on the fixed). I'm beat, gosh darn it!

Howdy,
I ate the first bug of the year on my home bound commute. It was a soft buzzy kind, it flew straight in and "gulp" he was gone before I could hack him back up. 60's and clear perfect commuting weather here in northern Utah. M.R. |
I got to ride my new commuter from the bike shop to work and then home. I just picked it up today. It is the redline 9-2-5. It is a fast bike. It is my first road bike in years.I will have to see how it work out. The commute was great today. Have a good nite .

Not bad, even though it was pouring & i was cruising along about 20mph hit a big pot hole immersed in a puddle of water hit the ground like a ton of bricks & slid in about 5" deep of gutter water....lol.

mmm! first bug of the year, I eagerly await that

On my commute home from work last night just after dark I was riding a lightly trafficked section of road when I hear the sound of a car getting on it a bit and bearing down on me. I was riding a SS mountain bike with fat tires and equipped with two 10 watt halogen headlights and two red LED tail lights, one in blinky mode and one constant. I also use a glasses mounted rear view mirror, which I checked and could see this guy was coming straight at me. So veer hard off onto the shoulder and got about 5-6 feet clear of the road and yelled my opinion of his driving skills as he went by.
Now here comes the good part, the oncoming vehicle who was witness to the whole thing just happened to be a local township police car. Cop does an immediate U-ey and chases the guy down and pulls him over. I just smiled and waved and said "Have a nice day" as rode on my merry way. Be careful out there folks! |
That makes your day

mad snotrocket skillz.
i rode to the worksite today, taking the long route and my stopwatch, and then turned around almost at once and came home. a bit much for my sedentary system on top of half-the-ride-plus-home on the spur of the moment last night, plus two hours with a sniffly bank employee on thursday who called me this morning with a full-blown cold. so a mile from home i'm in the local health food store buying yogurt and spelt bread and such to go with my new healthy life, and i get the bodacious sneezes. sneezed my way out of the store and back onto my bike, and sneezed my way back to the house. half of the rest of the ride home was made weak and feeble by sneezing, and then once the phrase popped into my head, the other half was ruined by the giggle attack. feeling pretty good now :D a thought came to me somewhere out there. one reason why i do love biking so much is it always makes me feel like i'm on a road trip. we don't do road trips any more since we got the cat. and i don't know why it is, but biking always makes me look at the sky. it's a total, instant vacation feeling for me, going back to the start of my life. worth the price of admission all in its own right. songs: shipwrecked at the stable door, bruce cockburn; twenty years, peggy seeger; the obvious child, paul simon. |
Put the finishing touches on my new fixie to get it ready for commuting duty. Finishing touches include riser bars chopped 5 in. shorter, Oury grips, one modified to fit the brake lever on the now shorter handlebar bit and new Kryptonite chain and U-lock, both either covered w/ a nylon sleeve or rubber coated to protect the frame. I could've used my old chain, but I'd also be repainting the frame real soon if I did. Took it for a couple long jaunts this weekend and felt like I could keep on riding if it wasn't for the cold drizzle and the soggy bottom. It is now ready for the fair weather commutes. My regular commuting rig will still handle rainy days and heavy duty hauling.

The best thing about working Sunday is the lack of traffic. Good ride both ways. Fastest ride home ever.

Spring! Cherry trees! Fair-weather commuters!
