Not a great day for a commute.
Clipping along down the bike lane when I spy a fellow commuter in front of me. Cool, this always ups the tempo when I see this guy. :D Well, before I catch up to him the bike lane merges with traffic for an under pass so I watch my fellow commuter merge just like I have done a 100 times. Then to my surprise I see a little white truck just ahead of me speed up and proceed to jump on this guys tail. I mean just about literally. Here we are slowing down from about 25 mph and this a-hole is 1-2 feet off this cyclists rear tire   . Granted, it wasn't my tire but to watch somebody try to threaten and endanger another cyclist with a 3000 # vehicle was more than I could stand. I accellerated and passed the truck, pointed back at him to get his attention. I was now in the right turn lane as was the truck (the other cyclist went straight) and forced the truck to a stop. I then proceed to his drivers window and ask him what the hell he thinks he's doing threatening somebody with a 3000# vehicle? His response, "I don't think bikes should be on the road" This guy is about 60ish (what is it with guys this age?) and I respond that I don't think old angry people should be able to drive but the law disagrees with both of us. His response "I don't care, get off the road". All right...**** this guy, I'm tired of dealing with this crap. I tell him the next time I catch him doing something of this sort I'll rip him out of that truck and beat his arse :o Man I'm getting tired of that. Seems like the majority of them are old men..what gives? In hind site I should have gotten his plate # but I was concerned for the safety of the other cyclist and felt that something had to be done immediately. I swear one of these days I'm going to give somebody a beat down for this type of behavior   |

good AM ride in, guick and focussed!
on way home, (in the area i was hit in 1999), an a-h driver in wite older f150 and 2other male passengers (age +/- 25) was attempting to turn left onto my right of way. he started to merege out and stopped when he saw my reaction. kind of got me angry when i saw he was laughing. i did not get the joke! everything else went smooth! |
Today was my first commute to school. Holy crap it wore me out! I've been spending most of my time on the trainer and the stationary bikes at the gym--can never compare. My commute is 5.5 miles to the train station (I ride an express bus to school) and it was tough. Plenty of wind too. Weather was particularly nice and clear today. I'm in the Santa Clara/San Jose are and ride down El Camino Real--crazy. People have no mercy when they're driving onto and off of the freeway. But I had more trouble with other bicyclists blasting up behind me, guys on bikes asking to mail in a card for a Jesus video, bicyclist riding on the wrong side of the road, etc. Giant trucks killing me with their smog, bus drivers just pretending I don't exist, cars driving way too close to me. And all the cracks and pot holes!

Good commute today to work & home .It was cold, but still had a fun. Have a good nite.

The ride home made me really appreciate clipless pedals. With a minor incident in the lab causing a small fire, we had to evacuate. I was close to my desk, so I was able to quickly grab my helmet and CamelBak (with my arm warmers and gloves). Happily, no one hurt and the fire was successfully extinguished, but we had to wait for smoke to clear and the fire extinguisher powder to be cleaned up. So I opted to leave rather than wait an hour or two to get a minimal amount of work done. But I didn't have my cycling shoes with me. Oh well, not worth the wait. Tennis shoes would have to do.
Man, I slipped off the pedals so many times trying to pedal in circles it wasn't funny. Maybe a dozen times or so on a 3 mile commute. I certainly don't want to be standing at any point while riding without my cycling shoes. And I can't pedal as efficiently. So it was a slow commute home. And it will be slow tomorrow morning, especially when it comes time to go up the hill. |
Ride in was 36 degrees, a new low temperature for my commute. (I know, but it is cold for California).:) Almost needed a jacket for the first mile or so. The ride home was 51 degrees, and I decided to hammer into the headwind. It felt good to keep up with traffic from light to light. I got some funny looks, could it be the HHCMF shirt, or that weird expression I get on my face when I feel the burn?

Nice and brisk at 14*F this morning. Some bad ice lumps in places push me way out into the lane, and my gears are skipping due to me stupidly letting the old chain get too worn, and the new freewheel isn't in yet, but it still beats driving.

easy ride today.
7.1 miles in 27 minutes. Not bad considering that I gave 2 pints of red blood cells using this new machine in the blood mobile... the thing sucks out your blood and then seperates the while blood cells from the red, then it pumps the white cells BACK IN !! ( a little cold feeling as it goes back into my arm, like if someone set an ice cube on your arm and just let it sit there) .. =) |

Mid-teen F's this morning. Slight tailwind. A pretty good ride, actually. Faster than normal. Made up for a crushing headwind last night. |
Slow ride in this morning... not sure why, I suppose it was just one of those days. At least the weather was nice, mid-twenties with a little wind. What with all the unseasonally warm weather we've had lately, I guess we are due for some actually winter at some point :)
|
Pretty cold ride in this morning, mid 20's. Probably the coldest commute for me so far this winter. I dropped my waterbottle at one point since it slipped out of my gloved hand. Luckily it bounced to the side of the road and I was able to stop and get it. Other than that I took it easy and just enjoyed the morning.

Great Ride this morning, clear, cold (24F-Relatively speaking) and fast! I Made great time today, heck I wished I had another mile or two to go. The Security Guard at the Main Lobby told me "I had the best car of all because it keeps me in shape" That guy rocks!!! :D. Got the usual gocking at my shoe covers on the elevator, but instead of sparking the usual "It's cold outside" conversation, the guy asked me what they were. I proceeded to clue him in .

Cold ride in today ~15F with a 15mph northerly headwind for most of the 19 mile commute on my stokemonkey converted bike. Not my favorite weather, but it beats the car.
|
Fast ride in, but seemed to take forever. Must be cuz my legs are still tired. Took about a minute less than I usually do so I felt good about that. I'll have a nice long weekend and I won't have my bike w/ me so I'll be able to rest my legs up, but I'm already dreading that much time off my ride.
Had a co-worker pass me in the hallway and smugly say, "Didn't ride in today, huh?" I told him I rode in and later showed him my helmet as proof. Then I called him a big wuss cuz he thinks it's cold out. It's only 31F out so why would he think that's cold? Some people just don't understand that you can stay out all day in that weather if you're dressed properly and working up a sweat. |
Great ride in... 29F and clear as a bell. Another one of those beautiful Colorado days is in the works. Riding your bike keeps you in touch with the outdoors, and with the world in general. I love riding my bike.
Last night I told my girlfriend that I love her more than I love my bike. She took that as a great compliment. :) |
Hot! At 7:48 AM when I left home it was 70F. A bit of a head wind for the ride and it took around 10 minutes to get to the office.
|
Choosing not to commute today. Need to look nice today, cycling shoes still stuck at work (from the fire alarm incident yesterday), and tired since I stayed up until 2:30 talking with a friend who really needed to talk. Individually, not problems, but decided to just take a day off from cycling.

Lovely ride in this morning. Man, these temps aren't so bad if you can postpone departure until sunrise. It was my coldest bike commute yet, in the low teens. My wife's been riding all week, so I felt like quite the loser for driving mon & tues...
|
I didn't commute this morning either. I got out at 5:45 for a great dawn workout ride and instead of cycling, I hitched a ride in the minivan with Mrs. Caloso and the Wonder Twins. She takes them to daycare on way to work and they go by my office so it was nice to spend an extra 20 minutes with them all.

Great ride in today (again) whole week has been pleasant so far. I've decided to do the BicycleTourColorado this year, so i'm going to alter my route soon to ride further. I want to work up to 40 miles a day (doing 17 right now) with longer rides on the weekends. I'm also enjoying my winter gear that my wife bought me for Christmas still, new neoprene velcro booties, a neoprene under helmet hat (highly recomend) it's toasty, pearl izumi AmFIB Tights, and a new nike fleace pullover to wear under my shell, it really is true that there is no bad weather, just bad clothes, i feel invencible! :-)
side note, saw some car pull off the road into a parking lot (cyclist was riding on the sidewalk because there is NO room on the road there, and one would be insane to ride on the road there) lady had to slow down so cyclist could get out of the way (rider was an older woman moving slowly) and when she had to slow she blasted her horn at the lady and yelled! Rider was so startled she looked back, loosing her balance and crashed. I was driving out of the parking lot and saw it all happen, i rolled down my window and honking flipped off the lady in the car and was tempted to do a U turn and go chew her out and tell her a thing or two about respecting cyclists as well as her elders...but thought better of it. |

Pretty good compared to last night. I don't need my light at all in the morning now, unless I'm heading in to work early.
