No bike commuting for me today. I've worked 3 of the last 4 weekends and I'm tired.
I thought weekends were for R&R so a person would be rested and ready for the work week on Monday. http://users.telenet.be/eforum/emoti...t/sterb057.gif Today is a rest day for me but I'll be back at it tomorrow. |
Ahhh, a great ride this morning! First off, it was a lot warmer than last week, so my fingers and ears didn't feel like they were going to fall off.
I also re-tuned the steering on my trike over the weekend, and I think it runs much better now. In fact, there's a huge difference. My new tires should be here within the week, and once I get those on I'll be FLYING! :D |
Enjoyable ride this morning. I was on the bike path (as so many of my stories go) south of 125th along the West Side Highway. Traffic was pretty backed up this morning, but still moving. I was rolling along doing about 20 mph and when I turned to look at the traffic beside me I saw they qwere going about the same pace. I caught the eye of a passenger in one of the cars, grinned widely, gave a salute (not THE salute) and dropped the hammer. I spun up and took off. I was going about 28 when the path and the highway diverge (just before the tennis courts). I hope I gave the passenger and the driver of that car something to talk about.

Great ride this morning. Mostly recovered from the crud I caught last week, made the ride in without too much hacking this morning. And it was fast. I'm sure the winds at my back had something to do with that, as did the fact that I caught all 4 stoplights as close to perfect as I can. So avg was >19 MPH for the ride in, time 46 minutes, which is a new record for me. And I feel good!
Have a great Monday, all! |
Still commuting, just haven't been posting lately. Easy ride today, so easy I rode in Jeans :D. Nearly got doored as some guy got into his car eventhough he saw me coming with my light on. I gave a half-hearted attempt to shut the door as I rode by...I'm really mean .

Haven't commuted in more than a week even though I've been working. Haven't gone into the office either until today. First day back and I hit two sideview mirrors, one on a bus and the other on an SUV as they tried to squeeze me down. Hit one with my shoulder as I tried to twist around it and the other w/ my bag when I was twisting around the first one. Maybe they'll learn to share the road more, but somehow I doubt it.
|
Good commute today; it was sprinkling on the way in, but when I got downtown, there was a "Curb Your Car Month" celebration at the federal building downtown. Got some coffee and had a nice chat with someone who runs the vanpool program here in town.

I did an easy 24miles yesterday and as I crossed the Newton/Boston line near Boston College I noticed a speed trap. I was all amped up when the Boston's Finest nabbed a speeding cager. You would think high gas prices would slow people down, but I swear people are driving faster. |
Monday + not enough sleep + headwind = slow ride to work. It was still a nice ride though even though it was slow and into the wind. Cooler than it has been recently too, temps in the low to mid 40s. Actually had to wear full gloves to keep my hands warm. I passed another cyclist along the 45mph road that I ride for about half a mile. He was wearing a hoodie and just going along. I hardly ever pass/see any other cyclists riding the same way I am so that was nice. Should be a great ride home this afternoon with temps in the low 70s. It is time to buy new tires and some other new stuff for the bike to get ready for summer.

Bah. Head cold. Not too bad, but I took it real easy this morning. Low 40Fs.
Even going slow, I caught up to someone on an MTB. Didn't pass though. Was happy to have a pace bike, so to speak. |
My knee still hurts, although my patella may have jumped back into its usual position. I caught up with a guy on my route [perhaps he thinks I'm on his route?], and just like the last time I saw him, he runs stop signs and jumps lights with abandon. Sigh. I'm going to leave a little earlier to avoid him. I don't want to be around when he gets tagged by a similarly aggressive SUV.

It wasn't raining this morning, but the fog was hanging out real low, so I got little bits of water on my glasses, but it made for a nice atmosphere for the ride. It took about ten minutes to get to the office.

had a couple big glasses of wine with dinner last night, not being a frequent drinker I knew I'ld feel it this morning so I planned on the shorter ride, 5 miles in today, very nice, weather is GREAT lately, especially in the morning. Looking forward to a longer ride this afternoon.

First ride in a week. We drove down to Orange County for an event for my wife's cousins and we made it a mini vacation by staying in a nice hotel in Laguna Beach. I kind of wished I'd brought my bike to cruise the PCH but it was probably just as well I didn't. We drove inland to Aliso Viejo a couple of times and I was thinking that it would be tough slog over that hill every morning if it was your commute route. (Isn't it funny how we cyclists look at roads?)
Anyway, today is gorgeous in Sacramento. As the first day of Bike to Work Month, I thought the streets would be crowded with newbie commuters, but if so they must have all taken a different route. |
Last night I again decied to stretch my commute home out into a little night ride. The wind is still from the east--very unusual--so I rode into it to start my ride.
It was so warm I had to stop outside a hospital to take my jacket off. There was a big ole 'possum scratching at the door of this hospital, right in the heart of the city. I wished a nurse would come out for a smoke break right then, and confront this possum with his toothy :D death grin, but no such luck. I turned back to home on Michigan Ave., straight as an arrow for four miles with the wind at my back. I put it in my second hardest gear and cranked without breaking cadence once. I hit all the green lights just like a car and only one cager passed me in the 4 miles. Late night is a great time to commute and ride! :) |
Rode in today with new tires (WTB Slickasaurus as opposed to kenda Karma's) and have a 32:14 on my SS Surly instead of the 32:16. Pedaling was easier than I imagined, and we went faster than normal (obviously). Wasn't spinning out as much, but I did a little. Hopefully we'll be commuting every day this week by bike. Stuff keeps coming up, and since I'm new to the whole commute thing, little sheepish about riding in the rain :)
Weather was pretty nice also. Little foggy to start out, but wasn't as cold as I thought it might be. Should be another windy ride home this evening. |
After riding to school with my son on his little commute, I wrote into stickittotheman@msnbc.com when they asked about how people are fighting higher gas prices. My solution, bike commuting. I recieved a reply from a senior producer and a callback form another producer, still waiting to hear if I'm picked to be interviewed. Maybe one of our NYC commuters might write in also, you know who you are;). Maybe a few HHCMF members might try as well, couldn't hurt.:D
(spelling edit, can't spell) |
Holy crow!
I almost freaked when a bird and the squirrel it was attacking careened across my path today, inches from my wheel. That's something you don't see everyday. |
First Commute.
Did my first commute on Saturday as a test run for Bike to Work Month and also because its $4.60 a gallon of gas here. A 16 mile round trip – 8 miles down and 8 miles up. Yep that’s right down and up. My job has taken me to Lana’i City on the Island of Lana’i in Hawai'i and I work at Manele Bay, 8 miles and 1700 feet lower down the island. So I start with a relatively flat 4 miles before a downhill of about 4 miles to the Bay. It took me about 20 – 25 minutes to get there in the morning and 80 minutes to get home in the evening. Hopefully the climb in the evenings will get a bit faster or at least a little bit easier.
Sights on the rides so far have been colourful cock pheasants running in the grass at the side of the road sometime accompanied by their not so colourful hens, and of course the view across the water towards Maui as I crest the hill before my long drop down to work. On a really clear day it is possible to see in the distance the snowy tip of Mauna Kea on the Big Island. Traffic is minimal at the time I leave around 630am, to be honest it is pretty minimal on Lana’i at any time, and the flat section of the ride affords good visibility to all. I take a ‘closed’ road as my downhill, and uphill, as the busier road from Manele Bay does not have a hard shoulder. All I have to watch out for on this road are trucks coming off the quarry with their loads for the construction at Manele Bay. In the past I have commuted to work when I lived in Dublin and Cape Town. Both major cities with traffic problems but I was lucky to have been able to find safe and interesting routes to ride in both places. Lana’i has to be the most pleasant and scenic one I have ever done and I’m sure that with a little exploration that I could find an offroad route as well without too much trouble. I ride a Giant ATX 870 mountain bike which I have had for about 8 years now. I’ve done nothing special to it to equip it for my commute, I’ve left the knobbies on as I use it off road on my time off. I still have my first mountain bike, a Gary Fisher HooKooEKoo that I bought in 1992 which I am trying to rebuild (long ongoing project this!!) to use as a commuter. Hopefully I can get some photos up here soon to show off my commute. |
Came out of the office bldg. to find a flat. 20 mins. later I was off and riding. Good thing I took slvoid's advice and slipped a pair of latex gloves into my repair kit.
Rothar, welcome to the HHCMF which of course means Happy Hawaiian Commuting MuthaF*ckers. The climbing you do will not only make you 10x sexier than any of your co-workers, but you will have the opposite sex throwing their telephone numbers at you so much it'll seem like snow. Scott, is that stickittotheman address an email address or an URL? |

good commute today... it was in the 60's all day with some light winds. today was my late class so I went in in the afternoon. took the University Boulevard route in in the afternoon... it was okay cause the shoulder is huge and it was virtually traffic free at this time of the day, so even the part where the shoulder empties into the right turn lane was okay. no problems at all and I made good time.
the ride back was good also although the sun was in my eyes for part of it. I went back to my usual commute route back and did a detour up and down the Paint Branch. there are a lot of joggers and cyclists out on the PB these days. the ride back was also fast, fun, and problem free. |
headwind. both ways. uphill. on my bleeding knees through the . . . oh yeah. through the cherry blossoms. but still!!
slurped a tiny piece of client bandwidth today just so i could get the true wind figures for bragging rights. 45 kph, gusting to 55, 'higher near the water'. oh uh, like while on bridges? and yea verily, pretty consistent both ways because it was actually more of a crosswind most of the way. coming from about 1 o'clock. i don't know how strong it really was on the bridge, but the change was noticeable the moment i saw water under my wheels instead of industrial-crud-island ground. on the way in it did actually run me into the barrier during one sloppy moment of slackened speed, which was enough to convince me i should ride on that side coming home too. rather hit a barrier that's a few feet from cars than a rail that's xty-something feet over water. but eh, it was fine after all. my other observation today is that by the time summer's over i'm going to look like a raccoon. i am doing the whole sunblock bit, religiously - and waiting the required 15 - 30 minutes before going out too. the problem is that even waterproof sunblocks are not tear-proof . . . i'm getting freckles in places even i haven't seen freckles before. ball game close to my work this wednesday. that'll be the week's driving-day. |
Excellent ride both ways. It's so nice not to encounter wet pavement for a whole ride :D
Todays was the first day of the Bike Commute Challenge. It'll go 1 month and my team has 6 members. Fun! |
