yesterday, the in-law visiting commute. Did some round town errands on the commuter and then threw the removable rack on my road bike with a change of decent clothes in a rack pack and did a nice, fast, rolling 26 mile ride out to Framingham via Weston, Wayland, Concord and Sudbury. Very pretty.

It gets a little better every day.

My first real commute was today. I loaned my backup bike to a coworker a few weeks ago and it was in my office. I decided that I'd leave the company truck at the office and ride the bike home. Beautiful weather here (sunny, 90F). Very little traffic since it's Easter sunday. I'm riding back in the morning for my first round trip commute day.
By truck the ride is ~7 miles & 13 minutes. By bike today it was under 19 minutes. At that rate I can afford to take a detour. Cheers, Michael |
Hip hip hooray for the MBTA!
MBTA is the Massacusetts Bay Transit Authority, which like many places in the US allows bikes on it's commuter trains in the non-peak hours. Today rolled over to the grocery store for two bags of groceries on the commuter bike. Made the big Easter brunch and then off to Providence, RI for the Easter dinner with family. Did the 48 miles with gusty winds that seemed at times to come from all sides. Caught the 9 pm commuter rail in Attleboro back to Boston (for $5.50 incl. bike) rode over to Cambridge where my wife was working and we biked home from there in the windy dark night. Happy Easter, Happy Passover, Happy Spring, Happy Biking. |

Anyway, no commute today. I worked a short shift on April 8 & 9 and taught a cycling class on April 15 so I'm staying home today. My "commute" will be from home to Stone Mountain, do a few laps, and then back home. Maybe I'll see a few commuters heading home (to Tucker and Stone Mountain) when I'm headed back to Decatur. It's supposed to be ~90F (32C) so I'll be the guy with the big smile, bright jersey, and Camelbak. |
Awesome ride in this morning - almost no wind, comfortable in shorts/sleeveless, and traffic was light and well-behaved. I wasn't particularly excited to hear the alarm this morning, and almost elected to sleep an extra hour and drive. Instead I rode and shaved almost 2 minutes off my previous best time - glad I decided to get my decidedly lazy butt out of bed.

Legs are still tired from this weekend. But a light bike makes up for the tiredness so my commute time was about average.
|
Nice commute this morning. Temp around 40F and a quartering tailwind. I made good time.
I'm sort of back to thinking about buying a full suspension MTB. The Peugeot is a decent commuter & all, but the pavement seems to get rougher every year. |

A little chilly--not cold enough for the tights, not warm enough to be warm. Legs a little tired from also riding both Saturday and Sunday.
Only one idiot driver this morning. I'm in a right-turn-only lane and need to change lanes to continue straight. I check shoulder, see I have plenty of room on the car behind me, and signal my lane-change. Suddenly I hear a "throaty roar" as the driver guns his car to pass me and nearly clips my outstretched hand. Second time in as many commutes a driver decide to pass me on my left while I was signalling a left turn or lane change. On a lighter note, saw a great bumper sticker Saturday night: Your child may be an honor student But you drive like an idiot |
I had this Big bad ass white escalade pickup like vehicle that decided to do 45 miles an hour right at non-stop traffic. Was quit humorous watching him stop in an attempt not to rear-end traffic. I thought at the speed he was going he was going to pull in front of me. I'm glad he thought better of it.

I don't know if leaving early to put on extra miles is gonna work out for me. Thursday I did so, and popped a spoke, leaving me to wobble in to the station. Got a ride from a buddy from the station, Thursday evening. Rebuilt the wheel over the weekend. Mileage ~15 - five miles less than had I made my normal journey, without popping the spoke.
Today, I gve myself an extra 20-25 minutes, was riding for 10 minutes or so, when my light went into 'reserve' mode, indicating ~15 minutes of dimmish light - still 1:20 or so till sunup, so I moseyed home and hooked up the backup light, but not in time to guarantee hitting the station before the train left, so I chucked the bike into the pickup, drove to the station, rode the train, rode the bike from station to work, for a total of ~5 miles. Still saved the gas money, but didn't get the workout. Rebuilt rear wheel = schmooooov. Still not sure the deal on the light. I thought I still had 2 hours of runtime on it till it needed charging again. I'm hopeful that I simply lost count, and haven't destroyed my battery. Weather was stellar. 70°'s this morning, 90°'s this afternoon. 96° yesterday. LAST Easter it snowed rather prettily. THIS easter we spent a good bit of time in the pool. |
Sunny and beautiful this morning. I took the fenders off the bike and dang it, I better be able to keep them off!

Last commute was Thursday 4/13 I had Friday off but did 2 hours of mountain biking, followed by 35 miles of road riding, should have been 50 miles but my )(@*&#!% friends were late getting to lunch, and then lolly gagged around about the whole thing...never been caged by friends at LUNCH, but...that's basically what happened...I rode hills on Sunday, 10 miles, about half of that was uphill, and 2 miles of that was up a really steep hill. Need to find longer hills to train on...
Commute in this morning was nice, I took the short route cuz I was up late last night, Easter dinner at my wifes grandmothers house, then back home and rehash all of the family goings ons...rode pretty fast though, and made good time. |
After spending 37 hours in airplanes in the last three days, I woke up to a nice sunny SoCal day. The ride to the office took about ten minutes.

Today was great! Especially compared to last Friday.
Last Friday... not so great. Two rear flats in the span of about a mile. They both had to be rear flats of course since they're twice as hard to deal with as front flats (especially on a fendered single-speed with rear fork ends). Got the first flat, found a roofing staple in the tire and removed it, replaced the tube with my only spare, reinstalled the wheel, went on my way. After about 3/4 of a mile my rear tire flatted AGAIN! Found ANOTHER staple in the tire. Had no more spare tubes. Got out my patch kit to find that the tube of glue was dried out. Was one mile or so form my sister and brother-in-law's house and I know their garage code so I decided to push the bike there. My brother-in-law rides a little so I figured he might have a patch kit or a spare tube I could borrow. Got there and the only thing I could find was a tube of rubber cement, whcih I used to repair the puncture in one of my two flat tubes. He also has a nice floor pump so I was able to pump the tire up to a good pressure. Finally got everything sorted out, finished the last half of my ride (my commute is about 14 miles one way) and made it to work about an hour later than usual. Fun morning! FWIW: this morning I had two tubes and a fresh patch kit with me. Of course I didn't flat. I did notice the tread on my Panaracer Paselas was wearing a little thin. So when I got to work last Friday I ordered a set of Kevlar belted tires too. |

I thought at first you were kidding me (or just plain wrong) but I checked out the MARTA web site and they proudly state they are one of the few that offers 24/7 access to bikes. Public transit + a bicycle= one less car. |
Great ride both ways. Only worked half a day today because it was supposed to be my day off. Ride home was warm and beautiful. I pick up my first new road bike in 18 years Friday, can't wait!:D

After going mountain biking (with my non-suspension commuter!) for the first time this weekend, I took my sore shoulders and sore sit-bones and biked to work today. That was just what they needed; my sit-bones are pain free and my shoulders feel a lot better.
That said, my commute felt so boring compared to the 16 miles of mountain riding I did this weekend. :D |

Anyway, beautiful weather today. In a fit of desperation last night, I stripped off my generator hub, fenders, and rack. I forgot that I had a bike under my commuting gear! Very fast ride in today and then quit work early to go home and work on a presentation (took the long way home.) |
The warm weather has brought out the idiots. I passed a guy on a mtn bike. Not surprising, since he looked to be a bit out of shape and I am on skinny tires. I had already seen him blow through two stop signs, and I didn't want to be around when Darwin came to claim him. Later on, I'm waiting in traffic and he comes up from behind, riding in the gutter and proceeds to jump the red light by about 5 seconds. Then he takes the lane, and traffic piles up behind him in less than a block. This happened all last week with a wide variety of riders. When I was driving on the weekend, I was almost taken out twice by SUV's making blind illegal turns, so it's not just a biking thing...

HOT TONIGHT! First commute in triple digits (already, in April??? Yikes - could be quite a summer...) Slow ride home, partly because of the heat, partly because I waited in 7 minutes of traffic at a 4 way stop near my house... no good way around this intersection yet so I suffer through it - this was the worst I've seen it since I've been commuting on the bike. I needed the rest at that point, so it didn't bother me too much...

Finally back on the bike. No commute since Wed's wreck. I did take a short 17 mile jaunt on sunday. Set a new personal speed record of 42 mph down a very steap hill.
My wrist is still a little annoyed. Not swollen or broken. Just bruised and a little sprained still. This am had a slight headwind into work. Latter in the afternoon the wind kicked up to something like 30 or 40 mph. In anticipation of having a horrific headwind, I left a few minutes early. Strangely enough, the wind was blowing in the opposite direction it usually is. OMG did I ever have on heck of a tailwind. Try going up a hill doing 30 mph. I made it to downtown denver 20 mintues faster than usual. Egads! |
