My shins were chillin' this morning, but it wasn't cold enough for ear covering. It should be at least 10C on the way home today - I'll be rolling up the shants for sure!

The ride was awesome. Didn't need knee warmers, only arm warmers and a light vest. The arm warmers had to come off about 2 miles from work along with unzipping the vest. http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoti...happy/1074.gif

A commuter I'd never seen came up behind me and we rode till the first big hill (Desmond Drive for the locals). He is a student at Emory. Looked to be ~20 years old and riding a Fuji road bike with a messenger bag. It was neck and neck until just before the top of the hill. Then he passed me and took off. http://users.pandora.be/eforum/emoticons4u/sad/1361.gif I caught him at the next light and we rode for a few more blocks until the next climb. He passed me half way up the hill and never looked back.
Oh well. I don't feel bad since I'm three times his age, riding a heavier bike, and only been back to commuting for ~3-4 weeks since my shoulder surgery.
I'm sure I could have whipped his *** last fall when I was in better shape. :roflmao:

It was nice this morning sunny with a few big clouds floating over places where I wasn't. It took about ten minutes to get to the office.

jyossarian 03-30-06 10:10 AM

No commute today cuz I'm leaving for a semi-long weekend sans bike. I'd like to take my bike w/ me, but I also need to give my legs, and specifically my knee, a rest.

I had forgotten about this last night when I posted, but yesterday on my way home from NJ, I came upon two accidents on the highway w/in a mile of each other. The first was an overturned Honda Civic and the second already had an ambulance tending to the injured. The Civic's passengers seemed ok considering what happened. Made me thankful it wasn't me and made me wish I was riding home from my office instead of driving.

My Commute Sucked today. I dont know why every one in my nieghborhood was driving like a freak.....Since I dont live anywhere near the Dan RyanMadness. but here it goes.
Incident #1 Big Cargo Truck turns right with no blinker as I'm right next to his front wheel. Luckly I noticed and turned right with him or I'd a been toast.
Incident #2 As I was getting back on to the street I was just forced off of by the truck mentioned above I was almost hit by a speeding car passing on the right, It was a single lane road with shared bike route markings ( not the bike lanes but chevrons and bike images.)
Incident #3 Cab turns right from the left lane almost right hooking me ( good thing I wasnt going full speed or smack) he gunned it so fast that he also almost took out a pedestrian in the cross walk with a green walking light. Made her scream through her hands in the air and jump out of the way.

Damn when it rains it pours..... the crazy thing is I was riding really conservativly today.

McGillicutty 03-30-06 11:53 AM

A light dusting of snow this morning and bitter cold wind but it was working for me part of the way to work. Already it's 15 degrees warmer and supposed to go up to 60F today. Looks like all those extra clothes will go in the backpack.

caloso 03-30-06 12:30 PM

I nearly collided with another wrongway rider last night and again this morning. Different guy, same IQ.

Rode in wearing my office clothes but I brought a jersey and shorts in my pack so I can make a longish errand at lunch time. We're off tomorrow to Tahoe for a little skiing so today's my last day to commute this week.

allison1x1 03-30-06 12:44 PM

Hi, first post also, though I've read these forums on and off since probably August of last year (I'm a relative newbie to riding at all). Hubby and I partook of our second day of bike commuting to work as of this morning. Rode in Monday, but I'm not signing up for all weather riding, and it was raining the past two days.

So far so good. My legs were really not feeling so hot today, though. We've been riding our mountain SS (32/16 for me) so we're not spinning out like crazy, but it was tough to pedal this morning. We only ride about 4.8 miles each way, which isn't a whole lot, but nearly 10 miles a day during the week is a lot more than we were previously riding (by about 10 miles).

What's up with everyone in 70 degree weather! It's been cold and rainy here in So Cal!

NM-NewRoadie 03-30-06 02:26 PM

ride home yesterday was awfull, I was tired, and had a VERY strong headwind. Started out on the 20 mile route, but gave up on that idea quickly and then very poorly, navigated my way home on streets i've never riden on before.

Ride in today was great. I pushed a little harder on the first leg of the ride, (mostly downhill) so I made better time than the last couple mornings I've done this route. Then I paced myself well on the flat (middle) section so I had plenty of energy for the last leg, wich is mostly uphill. Got through the shower and to my desk right on time today. I'm hopeing 20 in will become a habbit soon.

mjw16 03-30-06 03:11 PM

Could I please have something other than a headwind???

No?

That's what I thought...

the weather was beautiful today... a little chilly in the morning but it got warm quick. got buzzed by a car while taking the lane, when he had a whole other lane (a turn lane on a 3-lane 20MPH road), he was like 3/4 in the turn lane and 1/4 in my lane, what an idiot. other than that the ride in was fast, smooth, and fun.

I did a 3-hour ride around town before the ride back, which was a lot of fun for the most part except for a couple ahole drivers. got cut off by a truck in a parking lot who yelled "B***H!" (I'm a dude) and later down the road got beside me and blew the horn... while I was in a marked bike lane no less, what an idiot! then got buzzed later on by a Lexus while I was merging into a turn lane, a**hole couldn't have waited another nanosecond for me to finish changing lanes. I guess whoever made that one thread in A&S was right, warm weather really does bring out the sh***y drivers. but, other than that the ride was a lot of fun and I wasn't gonna let those two jackasses ruin it for me.

the actual commute back from campus was smooth, no problems at all. was behind a bus again on Paint Branch... that's always awesome except for the carbon monoxide. got up the big hill near my house really quickly like I have been a lot lately. great ride back!

cruzMOKS 03-30-06 08:19 PM

Had a good commute today. It was my first ride in heavy rain. My supervisor was concerned about me getting blown over the bridge so he let me off 30 minutes early. I covered my light and speedometer with baggies and a rubber band.

I had fun and could feel the wind push me.

tomg 03-30-06 09:59 PM

Good commute to work and home. I hope the rest of the week goes this well . Have a good nite .

luckysnafu 03-31-06 07:27 AM

Warm ride in this morning. Temps in the lower 50s and I was way overdressed with pants and a long sleeve shirt. Left late since I had a wireless internet problem at home that I had to fix. Still made good time to work since I took a shorter route. Temps should be in the mid to upper 70s this afternoon. I am really looking forward to the ride home, it's Friday and the end of the month :)

FormerBMX'er 03-31-06 07:49 AM

GE-OR-GEOUS MORNING! Perfect morning for a ride. Warm, slightly overcast, no wind, little traffic...I even knaved-it-up and rode in jeans :D. I did however bring my riding gear because I plan to ride after work, that is if I don't have to work late...again :(. I have either a 42 or 55mi ride planned tomorrow, so I just need enough to keep the fibers primed.

pinkrobe 03-31-06 09:37 AM

Got home last night around 9:00, after going out with the co-workers for a company sanctioned [open-bar] booze up. WHeeee! I remembered my training and pounded back a litre of Gatorade before going to bed. No hangover! :D

The ride in today started fast, but I got stuck at every single light, all the way in. It took seemingly forever to get to work. Sigh.

eastbaybob 03-31-06 10:32 AM

No commute on the bike today, its raining.

For the week I was 3 of 5, my worst performance of the year. Both failures were caused by rain. For the year I am now at -3 for bicycle commutes, in that I have not commuted by bike on three occasions.

Have a nice weekend.

RonH 03-31-06 11:33 AM

The weather was awesome.
Had to stop at physical therapy and was tired when I left. Makes the rest of the ride to work a little less enjoyable. But tired and riding is better than driving.
I see the shoulder doc next Thursday and I'm hoping he'll release me so no more physical therapy.

The ride home should be warm and sunny. :)

o-dog 03-31-06 03:40 PM

AMAZING weather today. best we've had so far this year!

temps were in the 50's this morning but I decided to wear shorts anyway since highs in the 70's were in the forecast for later. the ride in was fast, smooth, and pleasant. a couple drivers passed me but no buzzes today, they all moved all the way into the other lane.

my only class got out at 10:00, so I hung around for an hour or so, had some lunch, then left around 12:30 and did a 3 and a half hour ride around town, hitting up all my usual routes. a lot of fun, and no bad drivers today. the PB Trail was also included in my ride.... there were a lot of cyclists out today and a few joggers but the path was still relatively uncrowded and still very pleasant to ride on

the ride back to my house from campus was also awesome, pretty fast and no problems at all. in short, even better weather than yesterday, and way better drivers. awesome!

cruzMOKS 03-31-06 03:56 PM

Great ride in today. Air cleaned by rain yesterday. I got in about 10 miles at lunch.

Got an early ride planned tomarrow, looking forward to it.

McGillicutty 03-31-06 05:16 PM

Mid 30s on the way in this morning. Perfect weather. Took the shortest route (2.5mi) so I just rode in work clothes. Nice to walk right into the office from the bike rack. Felt normal and not freakish in bumblebee yellow and black bike geek clothes where everybody stares stares stares. I am sooooooooo glad it's the weekend.

rando 03-31-06 06:15 PM

great ride both in and back. cloudy here and temps in the 70s. actually thought it might rain! not yet, anyway. I am getting faster. first it took 40 minutes, then 35, and today my time was 33 minutes! woo hoo! I love riding.:D

scottmorrison99 03-31-06 11:20 PM

Great ride both ways. Missed the rain. I'm working through the weekend again, my favorite two commute days. Supposed to rain both days, but who cares? It smells better after the rain and my coworkers always get that "look" when I ride in on rainy days. In my breathable raingear I'm drier riding 6 miles than they are walking in from their cars. :D
