I am introducing a new co-worker to commuting by bike. We took the bus part of the way into work. The ride was pleasant. I am going to ease her into the concept of riding on a more frequent basis. The fact that she just paid 1,000.00 for car repair helped.

Our ride into work was pleasant. I will have to check on her several times today. Tomorrow, I ride with my regular partner--there is no bus.

Very pretty, I left a few minutes later than normal so there was a bunch of traffic for me to pass.

What does the map represent? Is that cloudy or sunny?

Headwind coming in today. I tried taking a shortcut and ended up suck in traffic for an extra 4 blocks. Dumb. It was super-busy today, even though I left pretty late.

NM-NewRoadie 04-27-06 09:48 AM

No commute today :-( but I'll have time for a ride tonight, as my wife goes to the gym Thursdays. I ended up staying out late with church stuff, and then having a long conversation with my wife before we went to sleep, about important stuff like selling the house and weekend projects...so it was good, but couldn't for the life of me drag myself out of bed this morning. I even reset the alarm for an hour later planning to do the short ride, but I still couldn't make myself do it. Just as well, I needed to look nice for Bring your Daughter to work day (I'm helping with a presentation). Today's my Friday though, so tomorrow i'll get in plenty of miles. Hoping to set a new distance record for myself, current is 52 miles, and that was with a group, so I'm wanting to do at least 60 solo. Should be wild!

NM-NewRoadie 04-27-06 09:57 AM

DOH! now the forum put up both posts, EDITED!

I was just about at work when a Pronghorn antelope ran across the road.

Same for me but I didn't ride today. Drove instead since I didn't want to deal with the rain and it is still raining here at lunchtime. I will be riding tomorrow though and only missed one day this week.

Today's commute was very different. Rather than riding to the office, I rode to one of the schools in Decatur to teach an Effective Cycling (Bike Ed) class to some of the parents. We did the road ride part of the class from 11:30 to 1:00. Most were a little intimidated by the lunchtime traffic but they all passed the course.

Sure was nice riding to work after the class. Lots of mid-day sunshine. :D Something I don't see that often. Usually I only get to ride in the AM sun and late PM sun.

Feel like garbage today - thought I was suffering from allergies yesterday, but turns out it was something more. Throat is on fire, can't breathe, feel like junk - therefore no ride... Will get some miles in this weekend if I can get healthy again, and back to the commute next week, weather permitting (expecting some thunderstorms...)

Also found out yesterday afternoon that not just one, but both of the guys at the office that have been talking about riding actually rode yesterday. That now makes 3 of 7 in my group, including me, who are riding...

Green is rain. Yellow is pretty heavy rain. Red is "can't see your hand in front of your face" rain.

I recently taught my son to ride properly to school. Teaching the adults must have been a real challenge; they already know it all:rolleyes: . I hope it sticks with them. By coming to your class they did show a willingness to learn. Congrats, and thanks for teaching more people Effective Cycling.:)

flat rear tire today, again. this time, the valve-stem at the tube broke. fixed it at lunch break!
talked with a new co-worker this pm before going home. she stated interest in riding to work also, is going to be at the office tomorrow and wants to see / test ride my recumbent (she has upper neck injury/pain) and standard bikes are contra-indicated per med dr.
at home, i got the 'bent ready for this friday's commute. the front tire WAS FLAT.... after i repaired it (more steel-belted radials truck retread debree), i put 12 more miles on "ready to go"
see what the next day brings!

first chance my wife and I have had to ride in together in ages. it was fantastic. who'd think riding 11mph could be so much fun. it felt like we were on vacation instead of riding to work. The ride home was great even though I was solo. it's fun riding home in the dark. so far the bike path has been manageable- people have been sharing the path pretty well- I've now, of course, jinxed it and it'll be nothing but people standing in the middle of the path having conversations whilst their dogs stretch their leashes to their limit across the path tomorrow.

day off today for the most boring baseball practice ever witnessed. me and my kid in about the same state of blah.

Radiographer 04-27-06 10:47 PM

Exhilirating! Mind-expanding! Ground-breaking. The weather is finally REALLY pleasant (Actually, it has been all week, but today was spectacular.) Came within a minute of beating my all-time speed record for the usual 16-mile trip in, and then rode across town to a doctor's appointment after work, where the Dr. was thrilled that my bike riding over the last 8 months has brought my blood pressure down to 104/72 and my weight down 17 pounds. He cut my meds in half, with a few toward cutting them out entirely. He wants to make me his poster child for overweight, over 60, overfed, under exercised patients who won't listen to him. I swung by my LBS on the way home to deliver a message from him to them: a heartfelt thank you, shared by me.
I'm a bike rider and I ain't never goin' back!

xroader 04-28-06 03:58 AM

Radiographer - Congrats!. Live long and prosper. I've taken up commuting by bike for the same reason, just not getting enough exercise otherwise.

Clear and cool; 34 F, very little wind. A beautiful morning in mid-Michigan. Jupiter high in the SW and Venus rising in the east. Stars were bright. 20.5 miles in an hour and a half. Pretty normal commute in.

egonlou 04-28-06 06:37 AM

How many times can I say how much I love riding to work? Yesterday on riverside drive above Fairway (125th st) I was hauling along on the straightaway and quickly looked down and I was doing 30mph with a crosswind. I was so psyched.

dustinvallier 04-28-06 06:53 AM

Kinda rainy. Slightly odd for it to be raining in the morning here, but odd is what the weather is, in Colorado. Not usually too extreme, but difficult to predict.

luckysnafu 04-28-06 06:57 AM

Had a nice cool ride in today. Temps in the lower 40s which was very cool compared to what it has been around here but it was a nice change from sweating my ass off. Should be in the mid 70s for the ride home so I am going to tack on some extra miles since I didn't meet my 200 mile goal this month.

vtjim 04-28-06 07:02 AM

Great ride this morning except for the fact that it ended at work. :p Temps in the low 30Fs and a light tailwind.

Amusing story from first commute

A couple of weeks ago I started commuting to work. I'm fortunate, becasue there's a bike trail that runs all the way downtown that starts a couple of miles from my house.

It passes right by a park with a small lake. As I was riding home, making pretty good time (close to 20 MPH, which is pretty good for me), I looked up to see a large Canada Goose coming in for a landing on the lake. He was a little above eye level about 10 feet away.

It would have been beautiful if he hadn't been headed straight for my face...

I ducked, he flapped or did something. I felt a wingtip(?) on my back and glanced behind me to see a less-than-graceful-but-still-successful landing in the water.

A panicked goose looks pretty funny in retrospect.

Easy ride in today. I did so much drafting on one truck I started feeling guilty. Not guilty as in breaking the law, but guilty as in having too many brownies. It was just so easy cruising along at 25-30 behind the truck. I passed and gave him a friendly wave when we split ways. On my own, I usually cruise in the 17-20 range.
