Cold this morning! Perhaps 1 or 2C. My ears were freezing! It was a nice rising sun, event-less ride other than that. The ride home should be much nicer at 14 C.

ctoddrun 04-26-06 07:03 AM

first ride since last Wednesday due to weather and vacation days. I did get 25ish in Monday, pulling the kids in the trailer along the river, 1st half into a decent wind from the south. Weather changed yesterday, winds from north, right in my face for the majority of my commute in, and cooler. ~43 wind chill (I know, downright balmy for many of you) made my sandal-and-sock clad feet cold (awww....) Felt sluggish all the way in, but cranked it out anyway. Then, no hot water in the shower at the office. In July, that's fine. Now, not so much... I am certainly awake, however!

I thought I'd seen everything, Dept.

Part of my route is on a paved bike path along a busy road, bordering a golf course. This morning a bright landscaper decided to water the grass and roped:eek: off the bike path. This is downhill, into the sun, just past a jog in the route, and the ropes were about two feet off the ground.

I called the county police dept.

My route is hazardous enough without an obstacle course!

My commute in today was a little chillier than it has otherwise been recently, but was very pleasant. I'm looking forward to the commute home, when I'm going to take a detour to meet up with friends for some extra laps around Hains Point.

WhiteRabbit 04-26-06 08:39 AM

Oh so nice. Nice blue sky, calm, just cool enough to be comfortable. My new tires are showing up today, so I'm really looking forward to the commute tomorrow. One of the bolts holding my rack on is coming loose and the ehad is mostly stripped, so I think I will steal one from the lab.

No rain this morning so I was on the bike. Don't know if the rain will hold off for the ride home but I am taking my chances since the weathermen are never correct. Much cooler today, only in the low 60s for a high but it was a nice change from the high 80s last night with high humidity. Saw a lot of bikers out last night on the ride home since it was so warm. Didn't see anybody else out this morning even though it was sunny for the last part of my ride.

Learned today that one of my coworkers who has been pondering riding to work actually did today. Sounds like he's committed for the long haul - former cycling enthusiast who said he absolutely loved the ride in. He stopped by at lunch to revel in the glory of his ride some more and thanked me for inspiring him to start commuting. Pretty cool...

First commute of the year

I got a new commuter bike last week and this was the first opportunity to ride to work. That nine miles seemed longer than I rememembered from last fall, but I'm still wide awake with very little coffee.

The tempature was around 50 and I may have gone anaerobic too often, but it just seemed like I should have been going faster.

Now to borrow a co-worker's car for lunch...

Southeast PA - First commute

My first commute today. (I'd pat my own back but don't want to tear a rotator cuff or anything.) Spent the fall, winter and early spring on a stationary bike and couldn't wait to get out. Fortunately, I spent some time on BF and heeded the suggestions to be safe and be prepared. Knowledge gained helped me plot my course and behave safely/ feel safe and buy some safety stuff. Not certain I would have gone through with it if I did not find this site.
Helmet, always. Blinkie on back even in daylight. Ride straight and take lane when necessary AFTER checking that it's clear. Waited my turn at red lights, cautious at green lights. Signaled. Thank you to all who have posted tales of joy/caution/misery/woe. I've learned a lot. Still need a helmet mirror.

Nice 40F morning, 10.6 mi of mostly 2-lane roads. No problem drivers.

BTW, made it 10 mi no problem. Showered and dressed at company fitness center (lucky me) and got a flat crossing the parking lot to my building. Freaky little 1/2" piece of steel wire, like a strand from a cable or bristle from a wire brush. Fixed flat in comfort of my office w/ patch kit, tools, pump suggested on BF. Thx.
Now I just have to make it home. 60F. 30% Humidity. Can't wait.

Beautiful sunny commute today, cool this morning (there was frost all over the grass), I took the long way. Warmed up at lunch time so I took a long cruise for lunch. I plan on taking the long way home. I'll have over 32 miles in by the time I get home, not bad for a work day. Don't you just love spring (other then all the extra clothes you have to haul)?

NM-NewRoadie 04-26-06 04:13 PM

Did 20 miles in this morning, still pretty chilly at 5:00 AM, makes riding interesting, cuz I wear my face mask and warmest gloves on the first section of the journey wich is decent, flat, decent, flat, looong decent. Really need the mask for those decent sections, as the 45 degree air whipping by at 20-30 mph REALLY numbs the face :-) but then on the flats it's easy to over heat...might have to see if I can find a mask that's easier to take on and off while on the bike...anyway, at the halfway point I take off the mask for good, and switch into thinner gloves as I'm overheating in THOSE too, but that only takes a jiffy. Then it's a REALLY long flat section (with some uphill grades here and there) to hills and then into work wich is another grade...ALMOST steep enough to be a hill, but not exactly. Don't need a mask for that section as I'm usually hot as hell by the time I get to work. I like this in-between weather in the afternoons, but wish it would get warmer earlier :-)

Bright blue skies this morning. A little below freezing, but in the sun it didn't feel too bad (passed in the shadow of a large apartment building for a minute or two, very cold). Broke my best time on the way to work with no wind either way, got stuck in a headwind on the way home, brutal but I made it all the way without much drama!

Good day both ways I would have to say. I love commuting.

tomg 04-26-06 05:41 PM

the old to/form to work went as usual, chilly start in short pants and t-shirt (acclimated in the first 7 or so mins).
after work, i switched to cannondale road bike (had to fix another flat rear/ steel belt tire piece culpret vs kevlar) and added more miles to the day.
was thinking of extended tour in the near future...where i will go if i have the time!

marqueemoon 04-26-06 06:12 PM

Felt like crap. Rode like crap.

vrkelley 04-26-06 07:17 PM

Had a bad commute yesterday and felt flu-ish. Today I feel much better. A very nice ride both ways. Many new faces on the streets this week. Could it be the +$3 gas prices? Or just me-too's?

greeleywheely 04-26-06 09:18 PM

29f riding in 72f riding home (20.2 mi RT)-nice day. Breakfast becoming really important these days. Hydrate before taking off and do some shoulder openers in the evening. namaste.

First ride of the year in a t-shirt! Both ways! W00+! I had to use my light on the was home, but hey, that's what it's there for...

buzzman 04-26-06 10:38 PM

sunshine on the way in this morning. quite glorious. Carrying a little less with me so the bike felt a little quicker. rode home with a touch of a headwind but nothing too troublesome. Then a fast turnaround and a ride of about 7 miles in no time with a nice tail wind to "The Lizard Lounge" to hear my friend play with his band. They sounded great. then a ride home in the dark without much wind but a stop at the grocery store.

I over heard two guys say that they drove to club where the band was playing and drove around for the same amount of time that I took to ride the bike there looking for a place to park. they eventually parked illegally risking a $35 ticket. Made me so glad to ride the bike.

Beautiful day here in the PNW. Short sleeves in, short sleeves home. Into first job at 10, leave for second at 3, leave from second job for home at 8:30. Took arm warmers in the ol' pocket but I didn't need them. I was a little chilly at the start of each trip but that's okay. (In hindsight that is, at the time sometimes the initial chill is breathtaking. Two legs of my total RT start with fast descents.:0)

33 miles RT.

spidercyclist 04-26-06 11:11 PM

Good ride today to work and home . Have a good nite .

tokolosh 04-26-06 11:15 PM

tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiirrrrred this morning. tired legs. tired brain. tired socks. tired ears. tired teeth. tired bike, not at all grateful to me for lubing its chain. i haven't taken it for its two-week-checkup-and-adjustment like i was supposed to, and currently can't get out of the middle cog. spun my way home in that one yesterday, may be a connection there.

how come on the days when you can't figure out how you'll get through the first six blocks you still get there in about the same time that you always do? it's mysterious. the vending machine at work was out of tuna salad sandwiches so i ate cheetos for breakfast. and lunch. i'm not hardly helping myself here.

usually park my stuff at my workstation before spending the day in the test lab, but today i just lugged it all in with me. halfway through the morning, some guy from the team came up and said 'i'm sorry, but you're going to have to turn your coat down.' i turned it the other way round cause i know what he means, but missed my chance to disingenuously brag about how this here eye-bleeder coat means that i'm special cause i bike to work. the weather was nice today. cool and grey, both ways.

stopped on my way home from work to pick up another six-pack of that disgusting chocolate-flavoured protein-shake stuff my kid drinks. he left half a can of it in his bedroom once for a couple of days, and it grew a form of mould that was shaped like a human brain and was too big to get out of the opening. um. where was i? cheetos are healthier.

practice tomorrow, so i dunno. in theory it always feels like driving would be the smart thing on baseball days, but in practice i'm not sure it makes much difference, considering the rush-hour gridlock over that misbegotten bridge. i'm about to go make something stir-fried as soon as i can get my arms and legs to work together and get me out of this chair.

songs: and the band played waltzing matilda, eric bogle; crunchy granola, neil diamond.

LOL Tokolosh. Your posts always make me smile.

i'm not a very good bicyclist-even though i insist upon going fasst

so i'm juiced and jazzed coming up oak street in phoenix( with some really wicked sidewinds blustering about) toward scottsdale today to teach a ballet class. i am loving the freedom my new rack and arkel tailrider are giving me. i'm faster. i know it. my bike computer tells me so. backpack-free and cruising up the mild climb near the mcdowell buttes, i hit the crest in full bliss and pop into big gear, aggressively attacking the descent. two seconds later, i stand up in the saddle and really crank it. i popped the chain and recieved a nice side gust of wind simultaneously. the bike squirelled and sailed out from underneath me at about 27 mph. i was 8 feet away from the bike when i landed on my tailbone, right shoulder, elbow, and last but not least, helmeted head.
i was literally stunned as i popped off the pavement. my ass was numb and i felt a little sick. i cringed like and old man and was barely able to answer the passing motorist who stopped to see if i was ok.
a very cute forty something blonde came out from her house and invited me in to dress my bloody arm, but i had money on the other end of my journey. i crouched a bit more, then gingerly made my way saddleward. i thanked her and still made my 5:30 gig three miles away, albeit i disturbed my students with my sweet cherry road rash. i am in whole body ache right now. i love it.

jeff-o 04-27-06 06:41 AM

C-c-cold again. Perhaps it wasn't time to switch to half-finger gloves just yet. I did warm up by they end of the ride, though.

jumpr 04-27-06 06:44 AM

Pretty uneventful commute today. A Lincoln Towncar buzzed me and left about 6 in. between the mirror and my elbow; first time that's happened in the city, but at least I didn't make contact.
