It rained all last night and hasn't let up yet. Rain is awesome! The big water stripe up my hind end is not awesome though so I am going to go next door to Bike and Hike and get me some fenders on my lunch break. I am glad it was warm rain too.

Can't wait till the ride home.

WhiteRabbit 05-22-06 01:11 PM

No commutefor me today. I rode in the Santa Fe Century on Sunday, and just didn't feel up to riding this morning. Maybe tomorrow.

noisebeam 05-22-06 01:16 PM

Had 29mph sustained wind (46mph peak) riding in this late AM. Big temp drop too, it was 104F yesterday and only 83F at 11am when I rode in. The stiff wind made for some mashing on my fixed 75 gear inches.

After a week of minimal riding, I was well-nigh ready to get back on my bike again. Since school's over, I don't really have a regular commute at the moment (someone want to hire me?), but I did have an appointment.

So despite the misgivings of those around me, I biked it. A roundtrip distance of some 18 miles (according to GoogleMaps Pedometer), all along the Charles River (Newton to Cambridge), and it was the longest I've ever biked roundtrip, and it felt absolutely *amazing*. It might not seem like much to a lot of people on this board, I guess, but it was for me, and I really felt incredibly confident and fast and strong -- like I could take on the world. :D The scenery was beautiful and the bugs weren't too thick ;) . Just a great day, and I love my bike to pieces. (so to speak).

--Badger, maybe overconfident

I was humbled during my morning commute today when I heard the diesel of an 18 wheeler approaching behind me. In my mirror I could see he wasn't merging left (4 lane, curbed road) and just ahead was a bike-unfriendly iron sewer plate. The kind of plate where the slots run parallel to the direction I'm headed.

It was one of those 'no time to react - keep the balance' moments, and of course, I survived without incident. Maybe a little shook up.

But otherwise, a great commute!

33F here Al but sunny all day and it's supposed to be warmer now. No commute because I'm on my monthly mini-vacation. :)

Nykon 05-22-06 05:21 PM

Grr, so on my lunchbreak I went and bought fenders because the ride in was great with water slinging up into my face and the stripe up my back. Now the sun is out and it is bright and warm... meh, go figure.

vrkelley 05-22-06 07:21 PM

No worrkes Nykon, your money didn't go to waste!

Urban Shooter 05-22-06 08:04 PM

24 to 34 mph headwinds all the way home, what's not to love?

I just checked your forecast,
looks like you'll get to use your new fenders

"The freaks come out at night, the freaks come out at night..."

Went to Chinatown for dinner w/ friends after work. I arrived early, cooled off, put my work shirt back on and was presentable, bordering on fashionable. On the way home, it was night time so my headlight blinkie and rear blinkie were on.

Freak #1: On a quiet one lane street, an SUV attempts to squish me into a line of parked cars as he drives closer and closer to the parked cars while I'm riding next to him. It was dark so my blinkie was on plus I had pulled even w/ him on the driver's side so I know he saw me. As he squeezed me, I rapped my knuckles on his rear quarter panel to tell him to move over. It didn't work so I just slowed down and passed him on the passenger's side instead.

Freak #2: Woman runs directly at me despite my blinkie headlight flashing in her face on a well lit street. I hit the brake (just a front brake on my fixie) and she finally gets out of the way when we're about a 1' apart. I kindly tell her to "get the f*ck out of the way *****head!". She mumbles something about being sorry. She apparently was running to her illegally parked car.

a very rare repreive from the heat today. it was only in the 80s! great ride both ways but coming in I had the wind against me. GGGGRRRRR. nice though.

Third commute home for me. Made it all the way this time. First I stopped after 10 miles due to soreness, second was due to bike breakdown after 11 miles.

Made the full 13 mile trip today. Warmest day of the year so far (68 degrees) in Anchorage. Some of the hills gave me a workout and I had to walk one of them because my front derailer did not want to gear down with my weight on the bike. Will adjust that tonight.

Lots of people out on the trails today. Most were nice and following the rules of the trail. Had a couple nit wits riding down the wrong side of the trail and refusing to move over.

All in all it was a great ride and a personal best for me. 13 miles in 90 minutes.

I had a great commute to work & home .I wish work would go this well . Have a good nite .

Had to go to the Doc today, allergy induced asthma. Stayed home from work to let the meds take effect. Tomorrow I'll be back on the bike. Haven't had allergy problems for years, must be being out in nature on my commute now. Wish me luck.

donnamb 05-23-06 12:15 AM

Loved it! Got pretty wet but the rain kept the scofflaws and jerks off the road in the morning. They appeared with the sun on the way home, though.

I guess summer is here!!
Last Friday on Bike to Work Day almost everyone in the group I rode with wore arm warmers or l/s jersey.
Saturday it was much warmer.
Sunday even warmer.
Monday still warmer.
Today it is supposed to be a few degrees warmer.
We went from spring to summer in one day.
Had to get my summer commuting gear out this past weekend. Finally got everything ready. I hope it still fits. Haven't worn my light weight bibs since last Sept-Oct and I put on a few pounds :o last winter after surgery (no riding for almost 3 months). I'm still working on getting the pounds off. :crash:

But today promises to be a great day. Lots of sun and light breezes.
Now I've gotta hit the road.

Wonderful ride yesterday morning, with cool temps and a few cooling rain drops during the last three miles of the 12 mile jaunt. Traffic was extrememly light and my new Apple laptop didn't feel nearly as heavy as the old Dell (although it is).

Also saw an interesting article in our local paper that mentioned there are approximately 500,000+ commuters in the United States (around 1% or less of the total number of work commuters). Does that number sound correct?

Cheers,

a bunch of wackos out there this a.m.

egonlou 05-23-06 06:54 AM

Whats with the runners in the opposing lane or having to run on the center line on the greenway? The past two mornings I have to pairs of runners running two abreast toward me on the right side of the greenway. First, can you run to the right? Second, can you run in the marked pedestrian area? I would love to make up signs one day for the bike/ bladers and the peds/joggers sides that read

<---- WHEELS

NO WHEELS --->

Maybe people would understand.

GTcommuter 05-23-06 06:56 AM

Very comfortable ride this morning. Only one "friendly" honk.

jyossarian 05-23-06 07:18 AM

Traffic sucked big time today. Not even enough room to split the lanes cleanly or filter through. Almost rear ended a cab at about < 1 mph. I think the spring time's bringing making the cabbies loopy. None of them could stay in their lanes.

knucklesandwich 05-23-06 07:34 AM

Great day to ride for people heading into DC. I, on the other hand, got to deal with a nasty headwind heading the opposite direction. Actually needed my gloves on for the first few miles.

I swear you and I have the same commute sometime. College Students get taken out like squirrels around here. They're always running for a Trolley, Bus or Cab, thus always getting crushed by a Trolley, Bus or Cab and the occasional Cyclist.

Again no dramas Today, things are more calm now that B.U. is out. I made good time today. My legs are starting to recover from the century so I look forward to a nice ride this weekend.
