After a big hike and a fairly strenuous ride over the weekend, my legs are a little sore. It was super-humid on the way in, so I'm all moist. Bleah.

Nykon 05-23-06 08:57 AM

The rain is back! I get to use my new fenders! No commute today but I still plan on taking a nice long ride.

tomchagolla 05-23-06 09:04 AM

This morning's commute was foggy. It was beautiful at first, but got a little nerve racking as it got thicker near the interstate overpass, the only dangerous part of my morning commute. But I made it, no problems.

RonH 05-23-06 09:21 AM

Less traffic than usual. What's the occasion?

Yes sirreee! Really warm. Unzipped the jersey  the last mile (partly downhill) and let the breeze cool me down a little. :)

Cold! Too cold for May, IMO. I had to wear long pants and a jacket on my ride to work. Heh, I'll need shorts and a t-shirt on the way home! Crazy spring weather.

I installed new disc brake rotors though, and they seem to be working well. No more shuddering brakes! And, I can do stoppies now! :D

luckysnafu 05-23-06 11:56 AM

Last night on my way home I had a kid riding a bike on the sidewalk wave at me so I waved back :) Also saw about 4 other kids on bikes on the way home. Saw a commuter this morning on my way in and we waved to each other. I normally don't see many commuters on my ride but it is getting warmer so I am sure I will begin to see more.

acroy 05-23-06 12:03 PM

After a very nice spring, it's finally getting hot and muggy in Dallas.
Normal commute is 6 miles each way, through 26 intersections! (straight across town). Been doing it for 4+ years, every day except when sick.
This am i went by the video store to return the weekend flicks, which brings the ride up to 11miles. 17.4 mph ave, very sweaty and sticky by the time i got to work!
luckily, i work in a plant environment and can get away with stuffing my work clothes in my pack, and going without a shower after the ride.

This morning I passed a girl on an ancient Schwinn cruiser. I bet the fenders weigh more than my whole bike. It was a bit dinged up but it appeared to be in perfect mechanical condition. As I rode by, I said "Great bike!" She smiled and waved. Then about 10 minutes later I passed an older woman on another cruiser, but this one looked like a brand new neo-retro deal. Very popular in Sactown. And she had purple streamers on the bars.
Always good to see more people on bikes.

Low 40Fs again. Overcast. Every once in a while it would sprinkle rain for a few seconds.

Apparently if it rains (again) tomorrow, we'll break a record for most consecutive days with rain.

It has only been a couple missed commute days, but it feels like forever. My last commute was Thursday, Friday morning I headed out for a "vacation" in Las Vegas NV. My wife and I met up with about a dozen of her family members there...Let me just say, not the best idea. But the good news is I had about 6 hours of fun (over three and a half days) so it wasn't all bad.

I REALLY wanted to be back on the bike this morning (got some pent up agression to take out :-) , but due to bad tires (one sidewall partially split on my ride home Thursday, and BADLY needed to be replaced) and then two pinched innertubes (I must have been tired) I just called it, drove in today and got 3 new tubes at lunch time. Expect a post bragging about record commute times tomorrow :-)

Went downtown at lunch to buy a videogame and took the FDR MUP home after work. Not too many dogs out made for an easy commute. When I got home, I had a quick conversation w/ a neighbor that used to have an IF Crown Jewel until he sold it to ride a Panasonic instead. (Not really, but it sounds funnier that way.)

feethanddooth 05-23-06 06:23 PM

mine was good. nice backwind going to work, and a light one coming back. i did get honked at on the way home. oh well

Ridin_NJ 05-23-06 08:41 PM

Maybe I'll see you tomorrow, feethanddooth. I'll be coming up Route 206 aroune 7:30 a.m. :)

Celebrated my 50th Birthday (even tho I CAN'T be this old...) with my first full commute of the season. Was busy most of May with umpiring and meetings after work. My schedule now has more open dates that I can get on the bike more :) Life is good!!!

bilder 05-23-06 09:55 PM

Today was commute number 4.

I can see it getting easier and easier. Hot today by Alaska standards (70 degrees! Yippie!) and the ride was very nice. The sound of the creek and the shady spots in the trees were nice today.

I have found the part of the trail that I now dread. It is at a conjunction of several trails and parks with a frisbee golf course among them. Those golfers are getting on my nerves!! Today as rounded a curve and entered a tunnel, I see that the tunnel is full of people. I slow down and gingerly start to make my way through. I then realize that these guys are not moving anywhere, they are just standing in the tunnel talking. Must have been 8 to 10 of them. That was annoying enough but then one of them purposely steps out in front of me. I hit the side of the tunnel avoiding him and nearly did in my wrist in the process.

As I exited the tunnel I heard one of them say "Here comes a chick, get ready." I stopped and turned to see these jerks crowd in the poor gal as she tried to make it through the tunnel. I grabbed my cell phone and called the cops right in front of them. They scattered and went back to playing frisbee golf. Gave some descriptions and went on my way. The gal was very thankful and rode with me for the next mile or so to make sure they were not going to follow her.

Commute Day 1. Decided to go car free as much as possible (it just cost me 54 bucks to fill up my Maxima) so I now commute to my summer bar prep class. It's not super far 6 miles but the roads are pretty busy. It was a great day to start-- bright, sunny and warm about high 60s. Looking forward to tomorrow. It's great to see tons of bikes on the road and I'm thrilled that a bunch of my classmates are bike commuting too.

I just started reading this thread so I hope to pick up lots of tips from you guys-- like ways to avoid sweaty back syndrome from biking with a heavy laptop in my backpack.

Good job bilder. Commuting does have its benefits and in this case, the benefits were for the lady you saved.

Bungee your backpack to your rack or use panniers. No other way to avoid sweaty back.

My commute took all of 15 seconds. Wake up, stumble to computer, login, go back to bed. I did nearly get taken out by a crazed cager that tried to right hook me by the foot of the bed in her rush to the bathroom, but I managed to avoid her. My 2 week vacation starts soon and I'll be taking my bike w/ me so yay for me!

jeff-o 05-24-06 07:26 AM

A bit warmer than yesterday, about 10 C. I still needed long pants, but I was barely OK with a T-shirt. This afternoon it will be 20, nice and warm. The ride was good, there are never many cars. Heh, a huge semi actually slowed way down on a 60km/h road so that he could get in behind me to make a right turn. I appreciated that....

luckysnafu 05-24-06 07:43 AM

Nice ride in this morning. Passed 4 commuters and got waves from 3 of them :) Going to be warm this afternoon, temps in the low 80s. I have some errands to run on the way home so I will get some extra miles in. I am already over my higher goal of 250 miles for the month and might get close to 300 if I can finish out this week and get 2 more days in next week.

Here are some ideas for your laptop:

1. Leave your car at school and use the trunk as a locker.
2. Leave the laptop in an actual locker or at a friends place near your destination
3. Get a rack and a bag that is made to carry a computer. Like the one by Arkel. Pricey though.

I found a computer bag that I can actually lay across my rack. I found it at Microcenter (Michigan).

Good Luck

 That's warmer than Vermont!

As I exited the tunnel I heard one of them say "Here comes a chick, get ready."
 Good for you for coming to her rescue. Curiously, two women got "grabbed" here in Burlington on the main MUP yesterday. Cops caught the guy. I always wonder why that sort of thing doesn't happen more often. I guess this is Vermont, and that's why. There are lots of attractive women going solo on the mostly deserted trail. I know many of them by sight.

Anyway, it was about 50F here this morning, and something I hadn't seen in 2 weeks... A large, very bright yellow circle was hovering in the sky, east of my position. If memory serves, it's called "the sun." If you see it, don't be alarmed. :p

Interesting ride this morning:

I think I motivate some kid to ride faster than he normally does. I decided to take my Fuji out today, so I'm lycra-downed crusing along at 17.5 and some kid wearing sandles, baggy-shorts, t-shirt and no helmet goes blowing by at about 19mph. His upper body was swaying back and forth and he was mashing a tall gear. He was actually riding the same bike I bought last year, a 2005 Lemond Reno which is now my "B" bike and soon to be gone. The LBS was dumping them for around $629 a month or two ago.

He looked a bit nervous as he kept looking over his shoulder. A Mass Transit Bus was right behind him...I think he was pooped and couldn't go any faster :D.

Todzilla 05-24-06 08:27 AM

Waved to the same group of kids waiting for the bus.
Temp was nearly ideal for biking.
Once again, a truck thought better than to try to pass me on the windy curve that goes under the train bridge, which has metal support posts between the lanes. (I always prepare to bail out to the right if some fool tries to pass me there)
Made the one light, after slowing way down and watching the other direction's light turn yellow.
Brought 15 freshly laundered undershirts and socks to the office.
In a couple days, I'll bring my shirts to the dry cleaners. I still don't have a way to get them back from same...

egonlou 05-24-06 08:49 AM

Drivetrain is grinding. Did a cleaning this past weekend, but still had problems. Broought it to the LBS who made an adjustment. Now its worse. I'll have to go to the other location.

The wrench said my right brifter was damaged from a crash and needs to be replaced. That dooring happened like 2 years ago and my major problems are from the middle chainring. He said the alignment of the cogs is all messed up and affecting the chainrings.

So if you hear a grinding coming from behind you, its probably me.
