2 weekends and a day after Lasik I am finally cleared to ride again. Its a good thing the weather was perfect because I was sucking wind. Aside from being horribly out of shape, and terribly nervous that a rock was going to wedge itself into my eye it was a great ride.

40 Degrees!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
|
34F this morning, rising to 46F later today. Woohoo! Was actually sweating when I got to my desk. With the weather we've been having lately, I usually stop sweating on the way to the elevators. Time to buy more wet wipes.
|
+2C this morning. Fantastic! I didn't need my face mask or my knee warmers. Maybe some more of this snow will finally melt away, too. It's annoying.
|
Lots warmer: 42F. But the wind was in my face practically the whole way.
The ride felt good. I kept it relaxed. The only downside today was my light going out. I just got new batteries and thought -THOUGHT - I put them in my pack. But noooo. I had tons of old batteries that barely worked. Why do I keep these things? Fortunately the sun was coming up and I didn't need it. |
Ah, what a difference a week makes! Last Tuesday it was -27C, buut today it's +1C. Most of the snow has melted, but there are still a couple of bad patches to deal with, so the studs stay on. I remembered to pump them up to 40 from 25 psi, and that made the ride in a lot easier. I'll reassess whether to break out the slicks or not after seeing how the ride home is.

40 F Havin a heat wave, a tropical heat wave....
|
Nice! Rainy when I left, but that pretty much stopped before the halfway point, now it the sun is blinding (reflecting off the wet pavement especially). The earth must be moving around the sun and tilting, I didn't need my headlight at all to see anything this morning.

Today was my first commute since last Tuesday when I broke a spoke and knocked my rear wheel way out of true. Between snow and wind last week I didn't mind missing those days and yesterday was a holiday.
On Saturday I finally got around to replacing the spoke (first time doing this sort of thing) and basically botched the job completely. I couldn't get the wheel true and I had stripped the crap of of the nipple due to my spoke wrench being to big. Anyway... ended up admitting defeat and taking it to the LBS. Had them due a tune up while I had it in. Figured it wouldn't hurt with the conditions I've been riding in. This morning was the first I really rode it since bringing it home and both the front and rear brake were slightly rubbing the rim when not engaged. Also was having some major issues shifting. Pulled into a church parking lot and corrected the issues with my trusty multi-tool. Got going and suddenly there was a patch of super dense fog on the busiest stretch of my commute. It was strange because as soon as I turned onto a neighborhood road it was gone. Also had one of those 4-way stop sign moments... an SUV was there way before me yet insisted that I go first. I admire the kindness but it also frustrating when I already stopped fully. Good to be back at it. Should be a nice week here in Colorado. |
It was great today, 3 degress C, barely any wind, no rain or snow. I even wore the fingerless gloves :D
|
amazing commute this morning. Ice kept me in for the last week, and choice kept me in for a week or so before that (cold)... but today... today was amazing. It had to be close to 45 as I left this morning, the ice had crept back a little from the middle of the road, and the middle was dry. Took the old fixie out with a backpack and zipped in to work, no idiot JAM's, one very long steady trackstand, and a fresh breeze. I don't want to take the bus ever again!
|
Same old ride into work as I do every day, except today the last 500 m is the finishing straight of ToC Stage 2. Rode right over the finish line before turning into the parking lot.
|
Wicked cool! Did you throw your arms up in celebration? 3-4 deg C snows melting, slop and filth abound...gross.

Holy crap!! It was slick out today -- rained a little last night, then temp dipped to high 20s -- black ice everywhere, especially on the trails. There were 50-some car accidents during morning commute alone. I opted to hitch a ride with the wife and bike home. My co-worker said he saw a cyclist biff hard on the way in. I don't do ice.
Supposed to hit 50s next three days!! |
ahhhh....
60f and partly cloudy ride in. 72f and sunny now for the ride back. ahhhhh...... |
the snow and ice storm kept me off the bike for the remainder of last week so today was my first commute in a week. I had a weird pain in my right foot this morning but I decided that I was sick of not riding and the pain was minor enough (more like a discomfort than a pain really) to ride through it. I was really slow in the morning, and I'm really out of shape from only having two commuting days this month. still a pretty good ride in. somebody cleared and salted the CP Trolley Trail... really cool! I thought I was going to have to find another way around it.
the ride back was relatively slow and easy-going (as much as it can be) but still fun. stopped by the on-campus entrance to the Paint Branch to check out the conditions... all but a small section of it is still a solid block of snow and ice. definitely took it slow on the uphill section. good ride overall. it's good to be back! |
NOOOO!!!! The lamp on my L&M ARC HID isn't working! The green light indicator in the back comes on, but the lamp doesn't light. Traffic cooperated by leaving enough holes to slide through so I could leave them in my dust. But my light's not working!!!
edit: False alarm. Light's working. I charged the battery and it fired right up. I thought the battery was still charged, but I guess I was wrong. |
Bummer, dude. I hate unreliable (or just plain unfunctioning) lights.
I can't say I'm too keen on the rain I'm watching outside my window that I'm about to take off into either. Price we pay for scant snow/ice, though. |
A great commute both ways! Nice sunset, and light traffic
|
Dry and just at local dawn going in. Light rain on the first 2 of 7 miles coming back then dry; outran the rain front.

went to put my heavy duty winter cycling boots on and realized I left them in my wife's car after we drove home together from a party. Used my road cycling shoes and between the 40F temps and the light shoes I felt like I was flying into Boston. I realized why when I got to work and found that I had also left my heavy Kryptonite lock and cable in the car too.
Fortunately, I have a gorgeous bike room at work where I lock it and the room is under constant video monitoring and your ID has to be programmed into the card reader for the door to open so I fake locked it to my spot with my helmet and nobody touched it all day. Had to ride a few extra miles to a meeting tonight but brought the bike in with me. Amazing how light the bike is without the lock and cable to cart around! |

nice both ways. thank you, floor-pump-with-pressure-gauge and chain lube.
|
Back on the bike after my trip to Boston over the weekend. Got to ride in shorts this morning with temps in the mid 50s. A big change from the teens I felt over the weekend. Should be in the 60s for the ride home :)
|
Second day in a row that I rode w/o gloves, a big change from last week or even Monday. Queerpunk caught up to me today which meant I was late so we chatted for a few blocks before I turned off to get to my office. Only had one wobbly moment when I rode through some remaining snow that tossed my front wheel around, but I managed to stay upright.
|
Denied again! The MV Trail was too icy. I made it a little further today than yesterday, but still had to bail out and drive in (it's been Metro all the other days). My legs are wilting, I'm hoping to be back on the bike soon. Maybe tomorrow????
|
This was the first time in about a month I rode without my overcoat. I did wear my Totes and rain pants, but only because of the salt brine that would otherwise stain my suit and shoes. I felt like Spring, which was nice, however, I miss the fun of free-form riding on the thick ice crust.
