Yesterday was warm and a bit windy...took the short route in, because of a time crunch. The way home it was cooler and less buggy than usual...saw a deer and two cats. :)

This entire week I've had wonderful weather in the morning, temps in the low 60s. Mid 70s for the ride home, warm enough to work up a decent sweat. Almost no traffic in the morning at 6 to 6:30am through the west side of Chicago. Coming home at around 4pm is another story. Had a van cross two lanes of traffic to make a right turn in front of me last night - he had to know I was there because he had passed me a few blocks sooner. But in Chicago I've had people who I've made eye contact with pull out in front of me, as to say "I"m in a car and bigger than you, so you have to hit your brakes and stop for me".

tchazzard 07-24-03 08:46 AM

This was the first morning this week without wind. It was 66 F/18.9 C but high humidity. My average speed was almost 2mph higher due to the lack of head wind. A mighty fine day to ride.

bradw 07-24-03 08:49 AM

Yesterday I used my road bike (Trek 520) to commute. It was a little faster (I don't worry about speed) but I prefer my MTB for the few rough sections through industrial areas. Did hit 32mph on a short downhill.

The greatest thing has been the short-lived break in the weather. Morning lows in the 60s and afternoon highs in the 80s.

Alas, it will soon come to an end.

cat 07-24-03 09:03 AM

This past week has been much better than the previous 2 or 3...the temps are finally back down to around 100. There has also been a bit of rain:) My bike actually got (a little) dirty!

I hope the temps don't get back around 110 too soon. It's very hard for me to stay motivated when it's that hot out!

MI_rider 07-24-03 09:10 AM

The weather was great for riding this morning and the traffic wasn't too heavy so that always makes for a good commute. As a bonus I saw a fellow commuter for the first time today. He is not a regular commuter but he was riding in because his truck was in the shop. It was nice to have someone to ride with for 5 of the 15 miles. Made the ride seem to go faster.

Ed Holland 07-24-03 09:25 AM

Hi Folks
Good commute today, 18.3 mph average, which is not bad for me. Not too warm or cool, just perfect weather with slightly "moody" grey skies. They threaten rain for tomorrow...

Cheers,

Ed

pletcgm 07-24-03 09:56 AM

It was aweful! They had just scraped the streets to repave them. I was doing like 5 mph and bouncing like hell!

Kodama 07-24-03 03:22 PM

As planned I took yesterday off from commuting, and I needed it. So the ride in today was the best of the week. A bit cooler as there has been some morning clouds the last few days, and little wind. Looks like some traill closures are coming as they are working on some of the bridges it goes under. Not a problem thoough as there are several alternate routes.

Chris L 07-24-03 09:37 PM

Well where did that come from? "Coldest" Gold Coast night of 2003 last night, it was 5.5 deg C when I set out for my pre-dawn ride at 4.30am, had warmed up to around 8 for the ride to work and was probably about 12 by the time I got there. That made for an interesting change. I felt a little sore riding into work this morning, which surprises me. I hope it was just the "cold".

SteveE 07-24-03 09:51 PM

I finally was able to commute for the first time this week. I thought it was great! The weather finally cooled off a bit. For the first time in a while it seemed like I had only a small headwind in the afternoon and when I finally headed south it actually felt like a tailwind. I was a happy camper!

Andy D., no doubt, will think that the weather sucked!

Ed Holland 07-25-03 03:06 AM

It was pouring with rain this morning, but on the bright side there was a slight tailwind to help the ride.

.... Headwinds tonight!

Have a good weekend folks,

Ed

darrencope 07-25-03 05:37 AM

It was one of those mornings that made me just slow down and enjoy the ride - sunny, not too warm, and little traffic... Fantastic!

tchazzard 07-25-03 06:00 AM

First morning this week without fog. It was 66 F/18.9 C, no wind and clear. There were lots of other bikes out, but none seemed to be commuters. It is a shame that there are not more of us here in Biddeford, Maine.

tnorman 07-25-03 06:29 AM

I only made it 6 miles - 1/4 of the way, and then my derailleur cable snapped. :crash: I was having such a great ride; I just knew I was going to set a new PR today.

A fellow commuter that I'd recently passed stopped and asked if I needed help. I said no and called home to get a ride...

Now I've got to figure out how to put a new cable on these fancy integrated shifters. Maybe I'll just have the LBS do it, but they're so busy this time of year that they probably will want to hold my bike for 2 days. Can't have that!!!

If it ever happens again you should be able to use the adjusting screws to get the chain into the middle of the cassette so you can keep going.

My commute was in pouring rain this morning but as there was no wind it was really good! I love the sound of tyres sizzling in the rain.

Good idea. I tried riding in the smallest cog for a while, but couldn't get up a hill in that gear. I shifted to the small front gear, but the small/small combo doesn't work on my bike, and the chain fell off. So I got off and said, "screw it" and called home.

Great ride in today. Started out pretty slow but felt fresh after a longer than normal warm-up. (I usually instantly warm up.) The hill today was easier than normal b/c I've been hill training on weekends.

But it was COLD, dang it ... COLD. There was a nice tailwind, though. I think San Jose has settled back into a cooler pattern. I need HEAT ... HEAT HEAT HEAT. That's right, SteveE ... HEAT HEAT HEAT !!!!

SteveE 07-25-03 10:38 AM

I was probably the only commuter in San Jose wearing a sleeveless jersey the past two mornings. INVIGORATING, I say!

pinerider 07-25-03 10:40 AM

Another beaurtiful morning for the ride in, a little cooler (+16 C, 60 F) but still nice. Raced a rubber-tired backhoe/loader this morning, dropped it like a sack of potatoes and stayed ahead of it too!

Paul L. 07-25-03 11:11 AM

Well we have plenty of heat down here Andy! It was the upper nineties by the time I got to work. Humidity was high (for this area) as well. Still it was a nice commute. Always nice to get a ride in before work!

Andy Dreisch 07-25-03 01:19 PM

I have no complaints about the clime here in San Jose although there are times where I'd love for it to be the upper 90s ... on the way in to work!!! Wow!!

I live in south San Jose where it rather regularly gets to 105. But for the past couple summers it's not been hot enough to turn on the A/C except for maybe 2 or 3 days all summer. It cools off nicely at night.

Overall, I wouldn't trade the Bay Area climate for anything. I like riding my bike during the extremes b/c it gives you something to look back on later.

LarryJ 07-25-03 01:48 PM

Aready made my commute three times one-way (I went home for lunch). Little traffic, partly cloudy, not unbearably hot. Pretty good routine commute.

Larry

Kodama 07-25-03 02:45 PM

All days alike in the summer it seems. Only variation is a bit in temperature and wind. Today was the moderate crosswind action with high 60s low 70s temps. Feeling pretty good still and enjoyed the ride. Looks to be a hot weekend, and I think I'm going to take it a bit easier than last weekend --still a little burnt out from that.

SteveE 07-25-03 03:19 PM

I wholeheartedly agree with you, Andy, even 'tho I hate the afternoon headwind to start my commute. The Bay Area has to be one of the best places to cycle in the country. Not only the weather, but the proximity of excellent riding terrain to where we live and work.

Anywhooo, after watching tomorrow's ITT I am going out for a nice COOL ride over to the coast!

SteveE

Ritz 07-25-03 05:04 PM

Beautiful day, hot, windy, lots of traffic, Yep... What more could you want? Covered 12 miles, six each way. Avg. speed on the $99.00 dollar wonder bike is still at 13-14 MPH. God is good!

caloso 07-25-03 11:42 PM

Great ride in this morning. On the way home I'm putting the bike on the roof rack and driving home. Long day. Long complicated story about swapping the car with my wife. Thank god for Yakima.

Mine'sAPint 07-26-03 12:10 AM

Great commute. Cycled back home and met my friend at my house, we cycled the 10 miles or so out to the Redhook brewery. Great beer and 40 miles for the day, couldn't ask for more :D

greywolf 07-26-03 12:35 AM

Beut commute to-day , started work @0400, straight A to B inward commute, cold though ,frost on the ground . After a 12hr shift decided to take an easy paced shorter than usual ride home ,after coming off the harbour bridge ,I didnt feel to bad so I took a differant route that I dont use on my commute & I realy enjoyed my ride though I only covered 26ks I took in a couple of extra hills & took my time , arrived home a lot happier than when I left work :)
