I've seen four bicycle commuters in the past two days. That almost equals the number I've seen in the past six months. Still... pretty sad for a town this size.

I guess DST has brought them out.

caloso 03-13-07 09:47 AM

Totally Meaningless Achievement of the Day: Held a trackstand through an entire stoplight cycle at Broadway and Stockton. I was in the Zone.

To my dismay, nobody got out of his car to shower me with candies and flowers.

bdinger 03-13-07 09:53 AM

Wonderful, glorious and FAST. I was running a bit late, so I made the 2.5 miles in 8 minutes... on the MTB.

Then I got into my office and collapsed. THAT was a good workout :)

pinkrobe 03-13-07 09:57 AM

4" of snow overnight was 4x what was predicted. Out come the spiked tires! The best part was that the city didn't have a chance to sand the roads, so the streets were pure ice. Bad for cars, but very fast and easy for me. If I'm really lucky, it will be polished smooth by the time I head home.

ClanLee 03-13-07 10:03 AM

60 degrees, 11 miles of rolling hills in 45 minutes. My first commute of the year! Thank goodness for DST!!

JohnnyOTS 03-13-07 11:08 AM

Didn't commute yesterday because I managed to shove a spoke through the OEM rear rim on my Kona Jake. Made a big hole in the rim, although happily the tube stayed intact until I got home. One expensive (to me) trip to the LBS later and I have a new handbuilt rear wheel - Mavic Rim, XT hub, 36 spoke 3x lacing - should be pretty bombproof without spending even more money. Just for grins the mechanic weighed my cyclocross-turned-commuter. With the U-Lock and Cable still on the bike it weighed in at 40 pounds. He was practically gagging and rolling around on the floor. Good thing it didn't have my 7ah SLA battery on it. Or the water bottles. Or the handlebar bag. Or the panniers with the toolbag, lunch, and work clothes. Hmmm...maybe that's why I broke the rear wheel... >.> Today's ride in was quite nice, anyway. ^_^

HardyWeinberg 03-13-07 12:25 PM

COLD!!! I didn't notice it while biking w/ my kid to his kindergarten. I did have the presence of mind to be nervous of people driving around the neighborhood w/ frost all over their windows, but the temp itself didn't finally register until I was rolling on the MUP full-speed. Shorts were OK, but I *really* should have worn full-finger gloves. So my hands told me anyway when I tried to get them functioning at work.

Flimflam 03-13-07 02:12 PM

Been a while. Basically kept making excuses so as not to ride, hopefully back into it (for the 2nd time this year already! :|)

My new direct commute is only 2.75mi. - took me 12 minutes, and I'm keeping the knobbies on for extra work. I've been researching a few longer routes to tackle once my cardio has been restored to what it was!

Had a great chat with a fellow commuter this morning, actually rode and chatted for a bit - something I've never done before.

Anyone in Toronto on here going to the class at Urbane cyclist tonight? (It was sent out to the TBN mailing list)

robtown 03-13-07 05:29 PM

70F, DST, and everyone is coming out of hibernation. The MUP was busy on tonight's commute. I rode my new build Fuji World frame with barcons. The bike handled fast, smooth, efficient, and quiet. I was tempted offer to some spit lube to a few bikers whose bikes were scritching along. A few others looked a little flushed and puffing.

TrackGuy 03-13-07 06:56 PM

Kudos caloso :-) Managed to hold one at Broadway & Houston and again at Broadway & Canal. Thinking that the planets were finally in alignment, attempted a rear dismount infront of my office building only to have my jacket get caught on the saddle...

jyossarian 03-13-07 07:33 PM

On the way home, I took some meandering detours looking for Subway sandwich guys giving away free Trek mtbs to people doing "random acts of fitness". Found some dudes at 51st and Lex and tried to get a free bike, but I guess I didn't count since I was wearing street clothes and already riding a bike. Lousy bastids.

buzzman 03-13-07 08:31 PM

Did a tune up of the bike when I took off the studded snow tires and it's a whole different ride. Fun smooth ride. beautiful weather.

comet the dog 03-13-07 08:38 PM

deputyjones 03-13-07 08:49 PM

Awesome rides both ways. About 60 degrees (maybe a bit warmer on the way home), and I stopped off to grab a six pack on the way home.

chephy 03-13-07 10:56 PM

Today we had a day of false spring in Toronto. Lovely. :) I didn't pedal like crazy to keep warm the way I've been doing the last few months... I was relaxing, basking in the sun and enjoying myself. Interesting thing, there seemed to be much less traffic than normally - sort of opposite of what you'd expect... Maybe everybody was smart and decided to walk or bike instead of driving? Wouldn't that be nice?

Sorry, I'm down in Southern California right now. Take a raincheck?;) Actually, I wish I could trackstand that well. I started commuting fixed because of how fun you made it seem, and it is. Thanks.:)

sonatageek 03-14-07 05:00 AM

Well yesterday saw temperatures in the 60's and I decided to take the plunge and try a commute. The ride is about 15 miles each direction and I wasn't sure how long it would take and didn't want to deal with showering at work, so I went intermodal.

1 mile ride to the bus stop, threw the bike on the rack on the front of the bus, and then about a half mile or so from the bus stop to my office building. Biked the whole way home. Pretty slow going (the route is about 3/4 on the Ohio Erie Canal Towpath) due to the softness of parts of the trail and my lack of having ridden a bike much during the past few cold months.

This was a very relaxing way of getting to and from work.

luckysnafu 03-14-07 06:27 AM

Excellent weather this morning, temps in the upper 50s and not much wind. Made it to work in very good time and had a great ride except for the town worker who almost ran me over in his pickup truck turning left in front of me at a light. I wish I would have gotten his plate to report but I didn't have time since I was flying through the intersection. I have seen a few more commuters since it is warmer and DST is now in effect. Should be in the mid 80s for the ride home :)

Mr_H 03-14-07 06:41 AM

Last night: 73 degrees! Ruined only by a heavy wind...but it was 73 degrees! Shorts, tshirt! Totally awesome ride home....I wish it was that way most days around here.

This morning: 55 degrees, overcast, chance of rain. I started out way overdressed, had to stop and remove the windpants and jacket. It's too bad that tommorow its supposed to be low 30s, possible snow:(

jyossarian 03-14-07 06:56 AM

As I was stopping at a red light, just behind the crosswalk, a little girl around 8 or 9 said, "You trying to run me over china guy?" Then she tried to stare me down. At first, I wasn't sure I heard right, but when I realized I had, I stared back for a little while as I continued my commute. Not the best way to start a commute. Made me think if she treats adults like that, she probably doesn't treat her classmates any better, especially the asian ones. :(

Wulfheir 03-14-07 07:07 AM

Had one tailgating idiot this morn. Taking thursday & friday off.

kokomo61 03-14-07 07:34 AM

Awesome ride in this morning. Temps in the high 50's. First time out without booties this year, and first time in shorts and short sleeves since late last fall....Cadence sensor came loose, so I stopped by the Help Desk this AM to get new tie wraps to secure it properly. The JTS rode well, and I felt great after recovering from 62 miles on Sunday.

pinkrobe 03-14-07 08:11 AM

It was really icy for about 1/2 the commute. In fact, I blew by a couple of fellow commuters who weren't using studs and were subsequently fishtailing and working hard to stay upright. Poor bastids. ;)

MMcK 03-14-07 08:42 AM

I made my first commute this morning. Great ride...had to get off twice to walk the bike through some snowy/icy patches on the path, but you can't complain about near 60 degrees in Buffalo. Works out to a couple of miles on the road, a few miles on a bike path, then through campus.

HardyWeinberg 03-14-07 09:45 AM

Nice ride. *Two* seperate instances of cars*stopping* at x-walks!!

And thanks Scott, it is fun, isn't it?

Anyway, today's ride was not so hot. I took a route through an industrial area that I thought would be quiet before dawn. I'd gone that way on a weekend morning and I remembered it being not so bad. Of course, on a weekday it was about an hour's worth of big trucks and crappy pavement. I should have known better but at least I know to avoid that route in the future. Finally made my way back to the American River Bike Trail and that was much better.

Chuck G 03-14-07 10:07 AM

Today was my first morning commute (I usually take the bus in the morning and bike home) and the first commute on my new bike. It was great! Need to get a decent headlight though.

I have a confession to make. I'm usually a runner, who last year biked to work once or twice a week, run one, and drove the rest; however, this year a friend talked me into foregoing my planned trail race to do a 180 mile two day bike ride. Now I'm biking to work four days a week, running one, and no driving. I've picked up some great tips from you guys and consider this thread a great source of inspiration.

EnigManiac 03-14-07 01:55 PM

Just got back from a lovely ride on my Firebike 'Bling Bling' extra-stretch cruiser. Roads were damp due to melting snow and ice, but the temps were 15c and more than comfortable. Ahhhh, it felt so good to be back on the bike after a 6 week lapse.

That ride doesn't happen to be the DC (C&O Canal) Alzheimer's ride in September, does it?
I'm planning on doing it this year.
