This week has been a great week for commuting. The weather has been perfect, shorts and t-shirt, and I have been riding my new old Nishiki road bike. I have it setup just right for me now and it is really fun to ride.:)
|
I got the cold rain blues. Last night the cold front hit early with the rain so I was face with 49F cold rain instead of 75F warm rain in short jersey and shorts. When I discovered I left my camelback with tools at home I bailed.
I ended up working my side job till 12:30am so was worn out looking at a 36F rain commute with the forcast calling for worse. I had my new junker hybrid all set up with full fenders for her maiden voyage. Oh well - gives me time to swap out the breaks and install the rack. |
Awesome ride! 50f, breezy, a bit damp, very fun. Woman is coming to get me now, we're going to the state park to catch some sunshine and cycle around the bike path. Have a good weekend all.

Rare commute - wet but NOT raining both ways! So all the racers were out cutting cars off, blasting through intersections. Saw an all time record of 7 near misses on the inbound route. |
took off my studded snow tires this week and what do we have now but two days of snow and sleet.

Hello Fellow Commuters.
I would like to invite you all to see the videos I make about my commutes. I hope you will be able to see them. MY COMMUTES....The Overpass If this link don't work, visit my website and click into my You Tube Channel. You can see all my rides there. Here in the great south, the rides for me have been excellent. The mornings are giving me 70 degrees and 80's in the afternoon. I am very glad that it is warming up for all of us around this great United States. Now we have the spring showers bring May flowers coming. Just the other day for me as I was riding home from work and a small downpour happened on me. It wasn't enough to stop and put the rain coat on though, but I was thinking about. I did run into a rainy day the first of last week and I had to put the rain gear on. It did great to keep the rain off, but them darn car people hit them puddles in the road and............Instant Soak!. I was a little worried about the brakes that day, and they worked great. Thank Goodness! Seems that everyday them darn cars seem to get right in my way. WHATs UP WITH THAT ANYWAY! I thought when I decided to ride instead of car it to work, that maybe the road rage would end. Guess WHAT! I still love riding my bike to work and don't want to stop. I hope the traffic understands someday. Lately I have been wanting to visit the Grocery stores and do some shopping. But there is no place to safely secure the bike. I have been asking some of the stores corporate offices to have places to park your bike while visiting there store and no one seems to be working with me on this. If anyone in this forum could give me ideas and or links to help me get this done, I would truly appreciate it. I am sure we have a forum about that and I will gladly take a look at that forum if one exsists. So I better close for now and I hope all of you commuters have a great and safe ride to work everyday. Stay alert! Please visit My Web Site and You Tube Channel. Tell next time, TAKE CARE! |
Too action-packed to repeat. Check it out here.

Wheee! hack, hack...wheee!
Pollen counts must be getting pretty dang high now, cause I'm having my usual spring hayfever season. Must be time to start taking more drugs again. Other than that, nice ride in. |
Ride in was fine. Took up a middle lane down Lex to avoid all the snow that extended out into the middle of the street for some reason. Got to work and had a case of the dropsies. Dropped my chain, helmet, bike (twice) and ID, all while standing in the same spot. I need some coffee.
|
There was a dusting of snow [or maybe it was thick frost?] this morning, and the city dumped salt on everything. It wasn't too slippery, but I took my time going around corners anyway. The new 50x18 gear on my SS was awesome! Hopefully it won't be too tough on the way home.

Took the train into work today. I need to heal up a bit, my right hand is still swollen.
Last year I sprained my left wrist and did not take care of it. The freaking thing still hurts from time to time. Not again! Anyhow, my damage toll is something like 2 sprained wrists and 10+ assorted bruises and scrapes. At least my head is fine. Though I am starting to wonder after 3 straight weeks of getting hurt in various ways. :p |
Last Friday I had friends waiting to go to dinner with me and my eldest boy so of course...I got a flat on the way home - turns out a previous patch failed. I threw in the spare tube - the previous patches failed. After cursing slime tubes up, down and sideways, I verrrry carefully cleaned the first tube and patched it again. That patch held. Once I got home I dug up a new tube for my backup spare. I was all set to stop using slime tubes, but I went mountain biking this weekend with a friend. His front tire was flat before we headed out, so I patched it up - he had three pinhole leaks caused by three tiny thorns. On the outing, he went flat again (no it wasn't my patches). We just topped it off periodically using my road morph pump and he was fine - but it meant he'd picked up a few more pinhole leaks. Going over the exact same terrain with the same model bike and tires, I didn't get a single leak. So I guess slime tubes are a mixed blessing. From here on out I'll just carry a new tube or two and try to avoid patching slime tubes until I'm somewhere where I can really clean up the tubes before patching them
Today when I was biking in to work I saw an owl on the bike lane. It was around 4am when I was riding next to the indian reservation. Much coolness. |
I took the stud's off last week, put the slicks on, had some good rides in. This morning I woke up , looked outside, and we have snow. Besides not having enough time to put the studs back on (if I don't leave the house by a certain time I'm late for work), the cars were sliding all over the place.
Sigh, another car ride today :( |
Did my first commute this morning since getting smooshed last Tuesday. My ribs and back are still sore, so I was expecting a bit of an unpleasant ride. Thankfully, I was quite wrong. While sitting on the bike, I was more comfortable than I am sitting in this chair right now. The air was a bit chillier than it's been lately, but not too bad. Bike seems to be holding up well.
I'm thinking I might even test my luck and take a detour on the way home today. |
Hi all - first post in this wonderful commuter forum. I used to ride my bike to work when I lived in Illinois and absolutely loved it ... despite the fact that Champaign isn't the most bike friendly town in the world - not the least either, though. I moved to Fort Collins, CO a few months back and have been telecommuting from my home ever since. I start a new job next week here in town and am very excited to once again be a bicycle commuter. This town is truly a phenominal place for riders ... abundant bike paths, a great (and growing) system of MUPs, and an overall culture that is quite friendly to we bikers. Anyway, I just wanted to say hello ... I'll do my best to post ride reports as often as possible.
Take care! |
Ride in this morning was pretty lonely, only one cyclist that I saw on the entire lakeside run, and he soon disappeared from behind me. Wind wasn't so bad, but still a pain - the waves/chop on the lake was kinda nice to look at as I rode by. Legs felt incredibly weak when I got out of the saddle to go up a slight incline, that was surprising - goes to show me how quickly I got out of shape by having a couple months off and between Thursday and Friday clocking in about 30 miles surely did it.
Have some errands to do tonight, should be OK assuming the current flurries and stuff stay reasonable. I'm still on knobbies, so I'm not too worried about that. Desperately want to get a rack & pannier set once the wallet allows, saw a nice seat-post rack with side supports at Europe Bound on the weekend but there's lots of time for research on that front. |
Today was my second morning commute and the first in the cold. I discovered 30F on a bike when it's dark is way colder than 30F at 4pm with the sun is shinning. My gloves, shoes, and socks were beyond their limit for comfort. I am looking forward to the ride home, it's supposed to be in the mid 60s this afternoon.

Beautiful morning.
I've come to realize that my 6 mile commute used to be a bit of a workout, but now I'm basically just warmed up when I get in (or home). So I tacked another 10 miles on this morning, and when I got in I felt like I'd had more of a ride. Not going to be able to do that too often, schedule-wise, but was fun today. |
Posting right after Hardy again :) Steady rain on the return ride. Forgot rain jacket and soft shell didn't cut it even 10 minutes. It DID keep the heat in however.
|
sweet!
25.0 miles total, traffic sane, wind on my back (for the most part), sun behind me, dog did not bight, ate right, traffic lights change "green for me", my eBay order finally arrived, it was "far-fig-neugan" (sp)! kinda scared about what tomorrow brings, hopefully more of the same! |
Cold, forgot my toque
|
Today was my first commute to work since getting my bike (this past weekend). I hadn't ridden to work since my wife & I moved to our new house (and now we're about 1.5 mi. farther) almost 6 mo. ago It's good to be back.
It was a fast, fairly uneventful ride this morning. Nice & cool, 45F or so, foggy and the empty streets were still wet from the rain last night. |
Much warmer this morning than yesterday morning, temps in the low 50s today but were in the upper 20s yesterday. Had the pretty usual commute, a little more wind than usual but not too bad. Looking forward to the 70 degree ride home.
|
In the 20s yesterday morning, then warmer but headwinds coming home.
This morning was 50 and no noticeable wind, and very fast. |
c-c-c-coooold! Moderate headwind and temps of about 18-20. I am very thankful we have a place to buy hot chocolate at work. Brrrrr.
|
Another fargin' early day at work. Thankfully, I didn't have a server meltdown to contend with today. :p The frost on the road in front of my house was slippery, but the streets were shiny and wet. I didn't realize just how little light they reflect back when moist. Vehicles, signs and houses all showed up bright, but the road was surprisingly difficult to see at times.
|
Nice ride home last night, had a rough day in the office so it was nice to enjoy the ride, tried to catch a guy in front of me, but it looked like we were pretty much going the same speed - wind in our faces and I was just beat, and I just couldn't muster the strength up in that wind.
Didn't ride today, took a full rest day - not even a gym trip today - feeling pretty beat down, so need to be less aggressive training :) |
Colder then I expected today, 28f, and a headwind. Nice day otherwise. The slightly wider tires I've switched too 700X32 are a noticably smoother ride on the broken pavement. Toes pretty cold by the time I got in.
It,ll be a fun ride home if the wind holds! |
First commute in over 3 weeks! My wife and I had our first baby February 17th (a cute little girl, if I say so myself ;)). I took 2 weeks of paternity leave, then worked from home for another week after my wife (and both of our dogs!) had post-partum complications.
Uneventful ride today. I was sucking wind towards the end and thinking, "Man, did I really lose that much conditioning in 3 weeks?" When I arrived at work and called my wife she reminded me...I'm riding to work on only a few hours' of sleep and little food. Oh, yeah. I forgot. |
