Well. Today was colder that anticipated..... The 9 mile return trip was ICY!!! My back brake froze up and I was un able to shift all the way into my lowest gear in the front!!! IT WAS A BLAST!!! Currently my helmet, back pak, shoes gloves, etc are drying out!
|
Snow in April!!! Ride home was almost a white out. Good thing I checked the weather report and dug up my cold weather gear this morning. I had a blast and thought maybe I was a little crazy until I heard some people out cutting their grass. It was 80 degrees F on Monday!! Gotta love this crazy Kentucky weather!!

rode in via Comm Ave. today. Came home on the bike path. It's been a little chilly and damp lately.
|
Once again, -12c temp and a 30km/h headwind. What happened to spring?
|
Cold this morning! Strong headwind this afternoon.

I would say that it had to be down in the 50's :D If I have to wear a beenie and long sleeves, then its cold. |
rode the girlfriends bike to work instead of my allez. only half her gears worked and the rear brake was shot, spent an hour servicing her bike before i could leave the shop

Good commute yesterday, again apart from the cold niggling away at me.
Good times, but freezing cold in the morning, really have to stop being so tight and get some good winter warmers. Couple of days off now so time to relax before the next commute and enjoy some pleasure riding ________ |
32F, with a quartering tailwind. Made good time. Only 3 or 4 pedestrians out on the MUP, including one regular with her retriever. No cyclists. I guess people are back in hibernation.
|
Cold and a little breezy this morning, temp in the mid 30s. I was tired this morning after a fun weekend driving my car at VIR. I was slower than usual but that was fine by me. Almost got drenched by the sprinklers on the golf course.

Bright sun and -1C on the way in. The forecast calls for a high of +8C, then rain, then snow/rain overnight.
|
Actually took it easy this morning. It's a beautiful morning: clear, calm, 54F. Beginning to see more commuters again.
|
Fast. Missed 3 lights that normally catch me. 17 minutes for ~5 miles.

Taking a different route home tonight: stopping by the home of a craigslist seller who is clearing out a bunch of old bike gear. Attachment 41684 Attachment 41685 The cold weather continues here in WI, with rain/snow mix expected this week. I'm driving today and tomorrow due to some work-related errands that require a car. We'll see if my "extreme commuting" urge kicks in later this week. From that craigslist seller last week, I got two useful things for $5 total - a tire pressure gauge and an underseat bag. |
Brisk, sunny, but damp (18 hrs of rain but just cleared before I hit the road). Was nice, so I did my 9 mile add-on, and right before I turned around it started pouring again. Builds character I guess.
Oh yes, I didn't turn my headlight on until it started raining past my half-way point. That's a benchmark for the lengthening days, of sorts. Good to see... |
52F at 6:30am this morning and it was already light out. I still kept the headlight and rear blinkie on for safety's sake though. Beautiful ride. I saw the sunrise and the birds are chirping all over the place. I might just leave earlier tomorrow just so I can slow down some and enjoy this more.

Nice ride in this morning. No problems with cars or peds. I wish all commutes would work out like this morning.

Well, I have to rant a bit. Been commuting for the last couple months. 15 miles roundtrip. I bought some alert shirts and have been wearing them everyday. I don't know what is up with people today, but coming home I got into two arguments with cagers.
I will usually ride near the shoulder, but take the lane when there isn't a wide enough shoulder. First I was riding in the right lane of a 6 lane road. First honked at me from behind as I was taking the lane and then passed me and then got right back over to turn right at the light, which was red and he had to wait for. I just started smiling at him and he was asking what my problem was. Called me a jerk and that was it. Pretty funny actually. About 3 miles later, I was riding on the shoulder of a four lane road and came up to a red light. There was a car left of me in the right lane. I am stopped and a car comes up from behind me and lays on the horn. I dont respond and he yells at me to get out of the road. I guess I shouldn't have engaged him, but I told him he could have gone through the parking lot and turned onto his road just as easily. He starts yelling some more about how he is going to kick my ***. This guy has his 3 year old kid in the back seat as he is cussing me out. I tell him that he's a great role model for his son. Anyways, I was pretty heated for the rest of the ride. Thanks for letting me vent. Also, when there is a wide enough lane for cars to turn, do you pull behind the car that is going forward? I try to do this when there aren't any cars around, but all the cars were pulling up to the red light. T |
My ride to work is always the same. 5 miles, not much exciting happens. It always ends in the same place and then I have to start work.
But, my ride home...that can be very exciting. It can be 5 miles long or 25 miles long, or longer. It can go over the hills or around them. It can be along the river, down a country road, through the woods. It can be on the side of the road or on the bike path or both, for that matter. My ride home is the most relaxing part of my day and even more so since I started riding a recumbent. I actually get to see the beauty of God's creation instead of the road right in front of my front tire. And when I get done with my ride home I am...well, I'm home. Now go take the dog for a walk. |
great tailwind on the way in today. flew downtown.
Ride home on the bike path tonight with a wind right in my face for a while and then the wind came around behind me again and pushed me home. all in all nice bike riding day. |
I had fun today. Chose a street I haven't ridden on for a long time: it's peppered with stop signs and jaywalking university students, but that's exactly what I wanted: a slow relaxed pedal through a happy pedestrian area. Cheered me up.
And on the way back I tried a new route and got lost. I enjoyed it. |
Cold. FOr some reason, even without the wind blowing, it was nice and chilly. My toes and my fingers were cursing me by the end. But considering the weather (bitter cold, snow, etc) lately, I'm glad I at least got to commute in once this week (Tommorow is out, @#$@$ weather).
|
10cm of snow forecast. It's been coming down pretty hard as rain over night. Could be an interesting commute home.

As for your question, I do everything I can to not block a right turn lane especially when it's not really a turn lane but an improvised turn lane. People trying to turn right are typically looking over the shoulder at oncoming traffic and not where they are going. I don't think it's safe to be where they are going at that time. In a situation like you described, I would either pull far enough forward that the right turners cross behind me or I stop far enough back they the right turners cross in front of me. |
hoo boy did I overdress today...
weather said sunny and 32 degrees as I was getting dressed, but it must have reached 38 by the time I walked out the door, and I was toasty by the time I got to work. weather.com now says it's only 40, but lack of wind and the sun definitely seem to be adding some heat. that, or my internal furnace is burning hotter than usual lately. |
Bad day for commuting here. Several cars passed me very close, then I had a very similar experience to swalter84's first one. Left me pi$$ed off for the rest of my ride.
I'm hoping seeing my daughter at lunch (visiting her new day care to check it out) and test-riding 2 potential new bikes after work will help me get over it. |
Sunny, frosty morning, no wind. Nice ride, but heavy traffic, 1/2 mile backups typical. Glad I was on the bike today.
|
Did some wild, multi-lane zig zagging today getting around double and triple parked cars, buses, cabs, etc. Carried the speed off the downhill for a few blocks and stayed in the middle lane keeping up w/ traffic until traffic slowed, then went back to lanesplitting and zig zagging. Hit a top speed of 85.8 mph. Computers never lie!
