Rode in to work today after a few days off thanks to a rebellious iliotibial band. The knee was pretty good about 4/5ths of the ride and then about a block away from work it started hurting a bit so I got off and walked it off. Parked my bike, stretched, and it seems good enough to walk up and down the stairs on now. *crosses fingers* Hopefully that means it's getting better.
The ride itself was peaceful and uneventful. It was about 90 degrees out and I wasn't sure if I was going to make it up the hill, but it seemed easier than I remembered. |
Ride in was great, slept in an extra 45 mins so I took the direct road route. 11 minutes, new record for me - took the roadie, still riding nice - need more PSI in those tubes, but going well.
Rode to MEC and got a PB superflash for it today, too, tonight I'm not sure if I have a long or just short, as I've got to go home before going anywhere else. |
First ever commute (well since graduate school a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away). New bike (Electra Townie 8) - felt just like the ride I remember from childhood. Lots of control, upright stance, flatfoot capable, very easy gear shifting)
A short commute ~3-4 miles, with some trepidation in traffic. I need to try to scope out more back roads. Looking forward to the ride home. |
Saw absolutely no other bikes today. I'm a loner...

Gorgeous day today both ways. Brutal headwind coming home; I was going to ride 5 miles the wrong way from work, turn around and come home, but I realized the tailwind I was loving would cost me so I only went 3 before turning around to be able to make it home in time. Sigh...
This morning, warm and sunny (well, give or take, 55F I think) then, topping rise at end of trip, found the rise was containing pea-soup fog, keeping it away from everything to the W and S. Kinda cool effect, but since I had to cross some busy lanes I stopped to turn on my taillight, and almost wished I still had my headlight on the bike. |
Tried a new route this morning on the way, much nicer, less traffic. Although, I have seen quite a few people out walking I haven't seen many other commuters. I feel a lot like m00n. :)
Ride home was even better, although the winds had picked up a bit. Tried a new route this way as well, added a mile to my trip. Felt great, but hot. It is getting very, very warm here. Any thoughts on riding in 90+ temps this summer (temps will actually get as high as 100+)? |
Set record of 16.7mph on the route including hills. Arrived rested. Blustery return ride. Looked like some neighborhoods didn't have power. Traffice lights were out and a strong headwind.

Almost gave an older guy a heart attack as I yelled "passing on you left!" as I did... He turned around and almost freaked.... poor guy.... Needed to raise his seat up.... I dont know if the people I saw were commuting, or just didnt have motowheels.... Good ride, nice and warm... The humidity here will KILL you! Billy |

All my commutes have been good since I bought my bent. Today was an interesting commute, I saw a crow pick up and fly away with a baby duck, and I saw a topless girl laying on the grass next to the bike path. Oh and I flushed two ring neck pheasants on the way in this morning. Oh yeah and had to ride home with one hand because someone shut my hand in a car door today!

exquisite weather today! rode into Cambridge for a meeting then actually had a meeting with a student on the bike path and rode about 5 miles together discussing a project he'd completed. Then met up with my wife, who was just leaving work for her ride home. We rode home together. Then I grocery shopped (3 bags worth). An all bike all day day. Even though I've been riding all winter it's funny to start to feel the sun burning me. I wore shorts!

My commute was awesome, but not nearly as visually......gratifying :). Raced a thunderstorm home and only ended up wet from my own sweat. Kicked up a couple birds and bunnies along the way as usual. |
Nice ride again today. We're having a nice weather streak. Mid 50s and sunny. I'm running (hashing) after work so I didn't push at all. Was still rolling along at 15MPH, and wound up passing a dude in a sweatshirt and jeans.
On the road, there was a traffic tie-up at an intersection near work. Traffic on both sides of the intersection was backed up and they were working in the middle of the road I was on. So... :p I rode down a grassy embankment to a parking lot, through the parking lot and out to the cross street I needed to be on, then went up and through the blocked intersection. Yay me. |
Very nice ride this morning despite the haze of pollution in the air. We got a bit of a smog warning today due to pollution blowing our way from the United States. Warm this morning about 16 degrees celsius otherwise known as 60 degrees fahrenheit. Not much wind, made good time. Hit the Great Canadian Baegal for some breakfast and on to work. Passed a couple commuters but never pass many the time of morning I ride.

Humid, sticky and foggy. I was drenched in my sweat as I pulled into the parking lot here. I just stood there for a minute to let the sweat drip off. Other than the humidity it wasn't a bad ride, I am hoping to get home in between the afternoon showers.

Ya know, after growing up on the western edge of the Mohave, I need to stop complaining... Water of ANY kind is welcome!

Yesterday on the way home a sidewalk surfing, red light crashing, scofflaw made it to the edge of my community at the same time as me.
This morning, a sidewalk surfing, red light crashing, scofflaw made it to my work's neighbourhood the same time as me. I've never seen them before, they must have dusted off their full suspension mountain bikes when the temp reached 20. |
Great commute even though my right knee hurts and I strained my lower back yesterday installing sod in the backyard. The highlights were the good temperature and the sight of an osprey hunting near the 14th Street Bridge. He was hovering at eye level and dropped in to catch a fish just as I passed-awesome! It's times like that that I remember why I love cycle commuting so much.

Worthless nights sleep = one tired DJ while commuting. My 3 year old is not feeling well and was sleeping in bed with us. Around 12 am I relocated to the couch with my cat. Nothing quite like waking up with a 17 lb cat on your chest. Now I have to pick him up after work. I think tomorrow's recovery ride will be a real slow one. That may be a problem since I will be taking the tarmac.

I was almost swayed from riding today, but decided to just take it easy in the morning, knowing by 11am I'd look out of the window and think "****, I should've ridden in!".
Nice easy going ride in, passed a few bikers and wished them well. One guy wiped out in front of me going around a corner on the bridge down to the MUP - his front wheel hit the steel drain/bar thing and must've slipped and he just came off. I asked him if he was OK, made double sure, and he said "go ahead". Low speed thing, but I figure he appreciated me asking. I think he felt pretty embarassed more than anything. It seems it's a lot harder to take it easy on the roadie than I thought, soon enough my speed was creeping back up to 19/20mph. |
My legs were sore from last night's road ride, but the commute in helped loosen them up a bit. Traffic was very reasonable, but I'm starting to see some JABs [Jack Ass Bikers] on my route now that the weather is better. One guy was trying to track stand his mtn bike in a right-turn lane, even though he was very obviously going straight through the intersection. There were several cars backed up behind him, and I was just about to tell him to get his sorry ass out of the way when he got tooted at by the vehicle behind him and stepped aside. I gave the driver a thumbs-up, then cranked it up to 400W while giving the biker "the look".

Rest day today, don't want to damage myself. |

If I'd been on a road bike I think I'd have gone over.

My commute was great - good weather and I luv my new route as I'm not hitting the heavy city traffic (nearly creamed twice last year and had a guy purposely slam on his brakes in front of me in an effort to make me hit him - he was reported to the authorities). And my route is interesting - I have all the earmarks of not getting bored as I'm always trying to find new routes - as it is I'm riding minimal main road, then veering off to alleys - zip through a couple of apartment building parking lots - so it has a two foot high fence - there's a pile of rocks that I can ascend to the top and then jump off onto the pavement of the other building, couple more alleys - zip onto the main street and then take a variety of side streets to my building downtown.
Sure beats riding a 4 lane busy street with no shoulder and no one likes you on the road! |
Was up too late last night hauling in chips at the poker table so I almost caved and drove in. Then I decided .. It's my birthday I'm riding my bike. 4 hours of sleep seems like more than enough .
Awesome morning for a ride. Sun was out, not a hint of wind, and temps were 40+ so it was plenty warm enough for shorts. As an added bonus, nobody even tried to kill me today. It is a special day :) Tonight is a starbucks run on the tandem with the little woman ending at the favorite bar/snack place. |
Happy birthday MyPC8MyBrain!

Crap. No ride in today. About once a month my wife is assigned an early schedule and it's up to me to drop her off at the office and then take the kids to daycare. I'd forgotten about it until last night, after I'd skipped the Tuesday night group ride, thinking I'd get in a long commute ride this morning. But I threw the Trek in the back of the minivan in order to take a long ride home this afternoon.
As I pulled into the parking garage I realized that I'd forgotten my shoes! D'oh! I would have just driven home to get them except there's no in-and-out privilege at this garage and I wasn't going to pay an extra $9. Arrggh. |
I'm such a bad BF member, I haven't posted about my commute in forever. Todays commute was great, perfect weather and fairly light traffic. Legs were a little sore after all the climbing I did on last night's after dinner ride.

Wonderful ride this morning. Two miles shorter than normal since I had to pick up the beater truck at the shop. I had to laugh when I walked in wearing all my garb. They were probably thinking "Um...we don't have THOSE kind of tires." After a bit the guy helping me was intrigued that I rode my bike to pick up my truck. He had all kinds of questions...how far? how long did it take? are you tired?
Great weather. The sun is now coming up over the mountains about 10 minutes into my ride. For now I still need the jacket, but I'll be able to ditch that in a week or so. |
