Today is cool and foggy. Since it's a recovery week for me, rather than put on the full kit and bomb in, I decided to shower and dress for work at home and ride in leisurely.

The problem is that my blood gets up during the ride and, before I know it, I'm sprinting from light to light. So I arrive to work pretty much just as sweaty as any other day. Luckily, I've got shirts and aftershave and baby powder here at the office.

Oh well.

There ya go! , i always thought i was the only one with this habbit...

nice ride today - DCs winter weather advisory for freezing rain never materialized

Yesterday before I took off for home I checked my computer for the temp and it said 28F (-2C) so I dressed accordingly and headed home the long way. Whoa, what a strong northerly wind (in my face all the way home) and cold too. By the time I got home my feet were cold, I was chilled, and my face cold. I looked at my thermometer and it said 14F (-10C)... figures. It made for an interesting ride. It was 1F (-17C) for my ride in this morning, my tires squeaked in the snow. Pretty ride in!

Surprisingly, it was a pleasant couple of degrees cooler this morning. I don't expect that to last very long, however. Still, I'm expecting to get a nice sea breeze of the South Pacific this afternoon on the way home.

today was awesome! it was finally a little cooler here this morning -- it's been mostly at or above freezing for the last week and all the snow melted --- and we got about 4" of snow last night so the ride was beautiful white... the trails and paths were great although some of the roads were nasty b/c of all the salt they put out so it was dirty slush...

but today i somehow forgot my change of underwear... i have 2 pair of shorts and my bike shorts/biking underwear (but they're all sweaty) so it FREE living today...

started snowing again just after i got in the office, so maybe it'll still be pretty for the ride home.

I awoke to a thin but definite snowscape this morning. It is very cold but I still have that edge of excitement about the snow that I remember as a child.

The ride in was freezing cold, there is still a northerly headwind, but could not wipe the smile off my face despite my shorts filling with slush

Perhaps the smile was frozen, but I don't care

If this gets much worse, I might borrow my wife's MTB. The skinny 700x23 road tyres on my bike are not really intended for this weather!

Another stinkin' hot night, only made bearable by a headwind. Seems the heat has melted the brains of several rednecks around here too. Times I had to act like a real fighter pilot tonight.

Had a salty ride in yesterday - 2" of snow overnight meant an overabundance of brine spray on the way in. I could barely see through my glasses near the end of the ride (too close to the end to stop and clean them), but arrived safe, sound & dirty. Temp was about -8 C, galoshes over my hiking shoes kept my feet dry and warm (and even more dorky looking).
Didn't have time to hose down the bike during working hours, had to do it after work but temp had dropped and forecast low was -24 C.(only dropped to -18 C, 0 F) I left the bike at work and bussed home and back today. Looking forward to a -6 C ride home tonight and a balmy 0 C ride tomorrow!!!

Nasty cold prevented riding late last week and early this week but I was well enough today to sneak one in. Good to get out and clear the lungs a little. Went pretty slowly. A little chilly by SJ standards (low 50s!!!). Nice.

Had to finish the brake job on the big steel beast this morning so I didn't get to bike in until 11:00. Weather was in the upper 70's and heading for 80 F. Beautiful ride. My knee was bugging me a bit (recently adjusted the seat) so I stopped and played with a few adjustments on my seat. I ordered a new bike yesterday too since my old 12 speed seems to not have many parts available anymore. I invested in a Mercier Corvus. It seemed like a good deal so I went for it. Should arrive at the Bike Shop on monday. I have never owned a late model new road bike so I am excited to get it and ride a "real" bike (not that there is anything wrong with older bikes mind you, I just haven't owned any brand spanking new ones yet.). Goodby having to bend down to shift a downtube shifter!

What a difference 24 hours can make. Wednesday was -2F/-19C, Thursday +25F/-4C. It felt balmy, back into my winter cycling boots. My feet felt so light after riding in thermal boots for 2 weeks. Not only did I ride faster (still slower than summer) but I saved 10 minutes putting on extra layers so I got to work early! Somehow, that did not translate into leaving work early. Light snow in the evening, first since our cold snap started.

Another warm one this morning. However, I'm looking forward to the weekend. Apparently there is a big spanky cyclone somewhere in the South Pacific, and as a result we're expecting a wet weekend with 80km/h winds!

Mid 20s this morning so it was off on the ride, beautiful, even played with a fellow commuter at the stop lights, he never got a way from me, too cool!
Tuesday was fantastic, it started out mid 20s with some mist, that turned to snow, when I got out of work I decided to add some miles, 20 to be exact, it was too cool! Looking forward to tomorrow's foggy morning ride, maybe some snow.

-2°C this morning, plus headwind. On the other hand it was dry and beautifully sunny. This beats rain hands down!

A little cooler than expected this morning, -11 C, 12 F, but no wind, so was an ok ride. I think I set a new winter personal best time for the 22 km, 56 minutes.

Super foggy and cool but not cold. Can't see the buildings more than a block away. Tried to stay off the beaten path because of the bad visibility. Arrived safely. That's as good as can be.

Great ride. I moved at speeds as if I put the hammer down, but it felt leisurely. It is starting to feel as if the weather is warming up. I felt especially warm once I arrived at work. Maybe monday if conditions are similar I'll drop the arm warmers.

Climbs are getting easier

Great ride today. I am having a hard time believing it is January. The temp was mid seventies on the way home. Cool breeze off the ocean kept if very comfortable.

I was on fire today. I blew away my old average speeds home, even with uncooperative lights. Never felt winded, and I flew up the hills I was climbing (at least in relationship to me )

Was a good ride today.

Garlic.. I rode in the LA area last weekend. 80 degreees. It was unbelieveable. I dressed for weather I was accustomed to here in the bay area when I left in the morning. By the time I got two miles out, I was down to shorts and my jersey, and still baking. I did get hit by some santa anas that really slowed me down to a crawl, but the cooling effect was nice (as much cool as you can get from a warm breeze)

Today is Saturday, and I had planned a bicycle ride in the morning. At work, we were to test our backup power this morning, and I had decided to ride there. But my emotions were mixed; I needed to ride, to get out and use muscles to relieve the stress from hearing about the Columbia disaster. Having been a part of the Air Force Apollo rescue team that was, and is, always on standby for a space disaster (but without a mission--they went to others), I still have an emotional tie to the Space Program.

Our test went well, we found out some things, and then I rode. My ride allowed my body to expell those stress hormones that accumulate when things like this happen. I rode almost on automatic, seeing the road, but with my mind not there. My thoughts were with the astronauts, the recovery teams combing the huge area, the family members and those close to the Space Program.

I got home just as President Bush was confirming the worst news, which my mind had already told me but my gut refused to recognize, that all seven astronauts had been lost. I watched CNN as I cooled down, seeing the reruns of the video of the breakup, and wondered at how we got there, how we took it so for granted, and at the huge focus on the program now. Why does it take a tragedy to focus our attention? Why doesn't this kind of efforts go into the prevention of problems, and not await the tragedy that needs to be reconsiled? My work is accident prevention; I see the dicotemy all the time. It doesn't lessen my questions.

I know what you mean I am just old enough to remember well the challenger disaster as a matter of fact I remember where i was when i heard. this was much the same I was at work and got a msnbc headline update..... The same sinking feeling that I remember from the challenger disaster...I was kind of on edge all night had to go for a ride after work, i judt got on and rode lost in thought, when I finally looked I had covered 11 miles, but can't remember what i saw u know? bikes are a great stress reliever.

Well... update... their starting to find body parts, and helmets. Unfortunately I was told to stay home tonight do to the harsh storm, still coming down as I type. I attempted to go for a ride but the slush quickly consumed my bike. No riding for me until the plows take care of the road. However theses are Minnesota plows so it should be taken care of by tomorow morn. The next time I work is tuesday.

Today was the wettest commute I've had in two years! It's finally decided to rain. Absolutely beautiful! If this continues for another six months or so, we might finally get some relief on this drought.
