Good ride in, found out last night at the LBS that my road bike looks it has been in a fairly heavy impact front accident - some tell-tale signs in the frame, apparently. Not to worry, no cracks yet and well, it was free - it's still very much safe to ride. Good ride in, keep forgetting to top up the pressures. I think I'm a gnats pube shy of 2000km now on that bike standing at 1236mi. I have to lock up outside unseen for a couple hours tonight, I'm a little apprehensive but glad the rack is QR so I can just take that whole thing with me.

a great ride in.
my first one in some time after getting some knee troubles - i think i'm on the mend! |
I've been doing a mixed mode commute (bike to MARTA train station) since last Friday. I began doing it when I got my Raleigh Twenty because I didn't want to be on Memorial Drive or MLK until I was familiar with the handling characteristics of the bike. But this original purpose morphed into trying out and mapping various alternative routes to the two train stations near East Atlanta.
Today I went to the Inman Park/Reynoldstown station via a route crossing I-20 at Bill Kennedy Drive. Aside from the fact that I did part of it on a gravel road by the CSX yard it was a nice little ride. I've posted the route on (minus the detour down the gravel road) at http://bikely.com at http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path...-MARTA-station |
Nice and cool this morning. My knees were really stiff though, had to concentrate on staying in lower gears and spinning.
|
Great! My best ride since my ankle hassles started in May.
|
I finally got a decent night's sleep, so I was pretty fresh for the ride in. Traffic was bearable, so that was nice too.
|
Traffic & temp were perfect. My knee - not so much. :( I hurt it in indoor soccer in March & thought it was better. Last night on the way home & this morning again I've been getting these sharp, shooting pains. Not good says I, not good.

Best downhill speed last night - 43mph. Increased my morning commute from 2.5mi to around 13-17mi (depending on route) with two challenging hills. Have seen my avg speed slowly climb up from around 7mi (fresh from NY not used to the altitude) to around 15mph.
This morning a wasp hit me on the forehead and fell inside my glasses; the wasp had plans to sting me before I quickly removed my glassed and squashed it. Got dropped by young cyclist on a MTB after I had just climbed a long and steep hill (guy came via a different route); about 200 mtrs ahead I noticed that he had trouble climbing so I decided to reel him in... :) Felt good to be able to summon energy on demand; the look on the guy's face was worth it. I need to work on my speed, but with panniers and the whole rig weighting in at over 30-40lbs it's not coming easy. Might get a roadie for quick 20-milers before work and then ride the commuter to work. Have been riding (almost) every day for the past 3 months or so, including long rides during the weekend. Last night I was truckin' on up J Street (three lane, one way arterial) and in the center of the right lane. No problem, keeping up with traffic and staying out of the door zone. And I notice some movement in a Volvo station wagon on the curb just up ahead of me. No problem, as I said, I was clear of the door zone. But it pops open just as I reached it, so that had I been riding timidly on the far right, I would have been doored.
As I pass the open-doored Volvo I say in my best Daddy voice: "Door!" There is the slightest pause and then I heard a shriek from the driver. An honest-to-god shriek. I think I scared her but good. And I don't regret it at all. I hope she'll apply the lesson to the next time she's about to pop open her door on a busy street without first checking her mirror. |
What an odd commute. Something strange is in the air today.
I stopped at a 4 way stop after making it to the stop shortly before a large pickup. Maybe a sec before. Anyways I performed my usual split second trackstand and accelerated away from the stop. The pickup driver proceeded to yell that I should stop and flipped me the bird. The issue was not that I performed a short trackstand while coming to a stop but the fact that it forced him to stop. Smiled and continued on my way. No point in arguing with a redneck. Later on a MUP I slowed down and yelled on your left to a rider on a bmx bike. He had been swerving side to side like a drunk or someone on drugs. As I passed him I looked to my right and he glanced over once and then again. After I passed I heard him run off the trail down a small drop into a bunch of weeds alongside the trail. He looked none too friendly while pushing his bike back on to the trail. That is the single oddest reaction I have had to an "on your left". |
The summer is just kicking in in Tokyo, and it was about 75C at 7:00am. The problem is the humidity - it was around 80% and I felt pretty dehydrated when I arrived. Wouldn't go back to commuting by train though. I take quiet back roads almost all the way and it really is a pleasure. I've only been dong this a week and I wish I'd started 10 years ago.

I live in Bend, Oregon and just started commuting this week. My route to work is only 3.05 miles, according to my computer, but right now, as a newbie, it is a good workout. Tonight's ride home felt really good. And, another fringe benefit, my wife thinks I look HOT in my bicycle pants and shirt:D

On the way in Yesterday: Saw a guy (on a bike) almost get slammed by a car. The driver pulled a U turn across Four lanes and they almost converged. It was the driver's fault, but in terms of defensive cycling it was pretty obvious that she was planning a huey and the guy on the bike should have taken steps IMO.
On the way home Yesterday: Saw a young lady on what looked like a vintage high end folder hold a track stand for at least a minute at Broadway Dyckmann: no muss no fuss/rock solid. Nice skills. Pretty lady. I was smitten. :) On the way home tonight: Almost got taken out by a pedicab coming over into me from the left. I let the guy know I was there. He looked right at me and just kept on drifting into me. Those guys aren't much better than the cagers. |
Another fine ride in. 4 out of 4 so far this week. I think I'm going to have to put the headlight back on though, so i can leave before 6:00. Yesterday or today I cracked the 1000 mile commuting mark for the year. No biggy as I typically ride 3-4,000 per year, but a nice milestone to make note of.
Humidity is getting back up to more typical Summertime levels |
Hot and sticky (for Vermont.) 70F. 80% humidity. I think someone was trying to reel me in but I denied it. :o I reeled in a couple of other cyclists in the process. I also saw a trail uber hottie out for a run on the MUP. Like, jaw-dropping, almost ride into the ditch hottie.
|
Excellent ride in! Humidity is building a tad, but I'll take the mid 60's anyday.

Decent commute despite some fatigue and being up waaaay too late watching the Tour and commiserating over the, ah...carnage. I took a slightly different route today -- biking in Boston is like driving in Boston but with a slightly different (and generally greater) set of options; you balance straight-line directness with pain-in-the-butt factors such as construction, constriction and idiocy magnets. Today I bagged the itsy-bitsy streets of the South End in favor of a straight(er) shot on Huntingdon to Stuart Street, and it was great. The traffic coming off the Mass Pike exit adds to the excitement. Oh, and last night going home, I was going down St. James as usual, at the end of a pack of cars, crossing Dartmouth Street with the light, so there was a bunch of cars and then a little gap and then me. Well, the peds all saw the gap and started to march across the crosswalk -- I mean a swarm of them, converging from either side. What did I do? Succumbed to temptation. Screamed, "No brakes! No brakes! Hahahahaha!" Halted 'em in their tracks, and half of 'em were laughing with me. Great moment.

Almost no traffic on the way in today, which is unusual for my commute. I was thinking I missed a memo or something. Then I realized I'd left 10 minutes earlier than usual. I didn't think 10 minutes could make that much difference, but it seemed to. Hmmmm....is 10 minutes more sleep worth the hassle of dealing with more cars? I'll ponder this.

I took my stupid pills this morning.
Making a right turn I after a small decline I decided not to slow down at all. Ended up in the oncoming left turn lane nearly running into a car. Oh and then a mile down the road there is an intersection. Often I can't trip the light but there is also traffic turning left from the otherside. They'll get the green arrow but my side won't turn green so oftern I just wait until the left turners are done and I go through despite the red. Well today the green arrow didn't stay green for very long and the cross traffic was migty pissed that I was in their way. Yes today I was a JAB but I feel stupid enough that I won't happen again for awhile. |
Good ride. Not too warm. I'm still doing mixed mode bike/train commuting as I map routes to the train stations. This morning I took probably the most efficient route to the Inman Park MARTA station from East Atlanta (Moreland -> Memorial -> Flat Shoals -> Walthall).
It was a nice fun ride, although I think I'm about ready to switch back to commuting directly into downtown. |
Great ride in today.
It was raining. I got soaked. And I had to take a 2 mile detour around a parked train. Like I said a truly great ride. |
The stars really aligned on the ride in today. I made every light on my route, I didn't have to dodge any cars, the bike stopped creaking and I barely got sweaty. My ride home today will involve mojitos on a sunny patio, and I don't work tomorrow. Hmmmm...

My commute home was OK yesterday - ran into one JAB who decided to pull up on the far right at one intersection, ooch into the intersection anticipating the light, and make a left turn across my path and that of a motorcyclist (we had both been in the left turn lane proper). Saw the same guy this today as he zoomed through a busy 4 way stop without slowing down. If I see him this afternoon he's getting a piece of my mind. I've *just* got the drivers in my area used to seeing me and not killing me, I don't need some idiot making them all nervous about cyclists again! Was running late this morning so took the fast route down Elbow Drive. Wheeee! I hit about 40 kph on one of the hills. |

I was slow starting today, but got upto pace quickly, had a fastish guy on an MTB keepng with me for a while, he got across a set of lights faster than I, and so at the next lights leading to a steep bridge, I had to dial it up and fly up the hill only to be stopped at a train crossing minutes later, hehe. It was some good training, though and it was all in good fun. The northern path of Marilyn Bell park (?) is open again, for those that ride the MG trail. |
Cool (50sF), misty. Supposed to be 80s and sunny later. Nice break for now.
My 6 yr old is now faster on his razor scooter going to daycamp (same location as his K) than he was on training wheels. He is faster in spurts on his bike (no more training wheels) but sometimes gets in a rut that would make the whole trip take longer. Still leave it up to him which he rides. (when I'm taking him rather than trailering the 2 yr old to her daycare; if I get both, I'm like as not to stuff him into the trailer too). It is fun though, I pick him up probably 4 days out of 5, and if he did not bike or scooter in, I can stop at home, stuff the scooter into a pannier, and bring it for him to ride home with. |
Good ride mostly. At my terror intersection I started off from a stop and misclipped in my right leg.. Lucky for me because the dang beemer decided to blow the sign from the second perpindicular lane. I was able to take the closer lane a few seconds and then proceed across the highway. Still haven't found what happened to the poor guy who got run down at the same intersection this past sunday. With there was another road.

Cool and easy. I rode in wearing my office clothes so I took it very easy--I don't think I ever exceeded 16mph. Tonight we're going to some friends' house for dinner and a TdF viewing. Should be fun.
