Nice ride in today - it's warm enough that I was comfy in a tank top. I'm counting down the commutes until I finish at this job next Tuesday... I'm going to miss this ride. The college I'll be going to is closer and the route isn't as pretty. It also has more hills. Oops. But I'll still bike in - I don't think I could give it up at this point.

My allergies were acting up on the weekend and I think the ride cleared a bunch of crud out of my lungs and sinuses. I feel a lot better. Chalk another benefit up to biking...

It was hard getting out of bed this morning. It's been hot out for the last couple of weeks [although nowhere near record temps], and I've been having trouble sleeping. Beyond that, my wife and I celebrated her birthday at the River Cafe last night [no corkage feee on Sundays], going through a bottle of d'Arenberg "Laughing Magpie" Shiraz Viognier and two bottles of Pirrammima Petit Verdot. Good times, rough morning. The ride in was pretty quiet. I imagine that there are lots of folks on vacation, or there was a big pileup on Deerfoot.

Good ride today (others have commented on the un-seasonably good weather we're having) but slow. Not only did I have my laptop on the bike, but I was also carrying my Harry Potter book in case I have free time during the day. D@mn that thing is heavy!

caloso 07-23-07 11:14 AM

Took the long way in and just for fun decided to count the motorists who passed too close for comfort. And that was Zero. Good job guys.

If only I had to deal with cars, though. I also encountered 3 wrongway riders. One guy was going the same direction as I was. It was on a quiet stretch of country road so no real hazard to me or himself. I pulled alongside and said "Good morning! Hey, you know you're on the wrong side of the road, right?" He laughed and said "Oh yeah! Thanks!" I smiled and waved and pulled ahead. After I got about 100 m ahead of him, I looked back and he was still on the wrong side. I guess you can lead a horse to water....

About 5 miles later, I came up on another guy but he was coming directly at me. The road was wide and without cars so I just pulled into the lane and as I passed I said "Right side!" No response.

A mile after that I was on the Tower Bridge and traffic is heavy and space is tight. Yet another guy coming right at me. He appears to be a Mexican guy and generally I have a little more sympathy for immigrants who may not know what the deal is. But this is the 3d guy this morning and he's putting me in a bad spot and I'm losing patience so I yell "!Oye, Pendejo! !Por la derecha!" I admit that wasn't nice, but it at least got his attencion.

Perfect weather this morning! Got a new rear wheel Friday, and I can feel how much smoother the ride is.

scottmorrison99 07-23-07 10:29 PM

Nice ride both ways. No problems with drivers, just wrong way cyclists and several dogwalkers with 20 foot leashes. What is the use of a leash that allows the dog to walk in the middle of the street? Somebody needs to nueter the dogwalkers.

Got my new Fenix P3D flashlight in the mail just before leaving for my commute at 4:30 this afternoon. Mounted it on my handlebars using a Livestrong bracelet and an extra rubber spacer from a blinky mount. On my ride in, with partly cloudy skies, I had an oncoming truck driver in the 2 lane 55mph section flash his high beams at me :). That made my day.

DataJunkie 07-24-07 04:20 AM

Well... I found me some hills. I had to pick up my son from his Grandma's house yesterday in the hilliest part of town. That and it raised my commuting mileage to almost 70 miles in one day... ugh. Combined with the mid 90 F temps that was obnoxious. Lost 4 lbs in water by the time I arrived home. Today is the same thing but I am going to shorten it by 15 miles by taking a bus from downtown. Still get the hills though. Woo hoo!

Adamjc86 07-24-07 04:58 AM

Bloody awful :(. Had to emergency stop for a motorist who cut me off, went right over the handlebars. Few cuts and grazes, bike is OK, but I've lost my wallet and phone. Car didn't stop, obviously.

:(

Big Ron 07-24-07 05:18 AM

Heading home yesterday, I got caught in road construction/repaving. Had to sit in line with pissed off drivers for nearly 10 minutes before we were allowed to proceed. You'd think they could at least shut their cars off while idling that long, but none of them did. I rode with the traffic for a good mile at ~ 25-30mph before turning off. Despite the traffic delays, I still managed an 18.1 mph average over the 26 mile round trip. Best speed for the year.

Ride in this AM was very pleasant. Drafted a moving van for a 1/4 mile-35mph going up an easy grade.

vtjim 07-24-07 06:32 AM

Nice again today. A bit humid. No wind. Sunny.

OMG I JUST NOTICED THERE'S A HUGE DEAD SLUG ON MY REAR BRAKE LINE! :barf: I think I'll let it dry up and maybe it'll fall off. Or I could be like Bear Grylls and eat it for protien. :p

Glad to hear you're OK. It could have been a lot worse. No witnesses to get a plate #?

My commute was uneventful. Finished HP #7 last night so I didn't have to carry that weight in again today, but stayed up till 1 am to do it. Legs were really tired this morning.

Man, that sucks about your phone and wallet but at least you are OK.
Take care.

Flimflam 07-24-07 08:08 AM

Brutal Adamjc :/ That really sucks.

Sounds like one hell of a work out there, DataJunkie :D (rather you than me, to be honest - 4lbs of water loss )

My ride in was typically uneventful, took the road direct route in due to running late (chose to sleep in).

toughyreader 07-24-07 08:09 AM

Commute today was awesome! Great unusal weather for TX this morning. Nice breeze, but not enough to slow me down. It rained last night so everything had this foggy hazy to it. Nice ride. Can't wait until 5:30 and I am back at it!

pinkrobe 07-24-07 08:40 AM

Generally pleasant on the way in. We came across 5 Porsches in about 3 minutes - four 911's and a Boxster. A 911 SC Turbo is my midlife-crisis dream car...

Buglady 07-24-07 08:55 AM

Meh. I think I overdid it on the commute home last night (it was 31C and humid... bleh) and whether that was the trigger or not, I wound up with a migraine that lasted pretty well all night. I still had it when I woke up at 3:30 a.m. anyway. Took more drugs, went back to bed, and it's mostly retreated now. I took the bus anyway, gazing longingly out the window at all the cyclists.

Stupid migraines.

1ply 07-24-07 10:07 AM

I had a nice ride. Said hello to a guy on a bike and a lady walking a dog. Left a smile on my face. When was the last time you said hi to a complete stranger while in a car? ....... never right?... yeah I thought so.

caloso 07-24-07 10:12 AM

Another sticky day, which is just flat out weird for NorCal. I remembered to bring my JetLite in anticipation of a late night at the office. The ride in was uneventful--passed a few fellow commuters and had no issues with any drivers. Just the way I like it.

HardyWeinberg 07-24-07 11:39 AM

Great. First ride since Wednesday, out sick from then to basically now. Missed record rainfall pretty much every day, darn the luck. Today, cloudy but dry (from above anyway).

edbikebabe 07-24-07 11:50 AM

Uneventful good ride. We had a huge thunderstorm last night. Dodging puddles seemed a small price to pay for not melting.

Thanks for the replies guys :), my phone is insured, and I got my replacement today, which was pretty good.

A guy in a Merc pulled over to help me out, which was nice of him - said the other driver was "a bit of a d**k", I was really surprised to see a car driver help me out!

Didn't manage to get his reg no, but hopefully I won't have another accident for a while!

Cheers,

Adam.

Good luck!

Don't bring the bike into the MRI room (unless it's CF or Al I guess)

Lamplight 07-24-07 04:02 PM

Nice weather going in, and I saw 3 deer, 2 of which were babies! :)

baskinrobbin 07-25-07 03:12 AM

Rode in this morning at 3:45AM! First time I truly used the Dinotte Headlight. It is AWESOME! Had to position it correctly, but it is so worth the money.

Big Ron 07-25-07 05:52 AM

Took a different route on the way home yesterday to avoid road construction. A little longer, but not a bad route to use as an alternate. Weather is still nice, but the humidity and temps are creeping back up.
Hope to ride in tomorrow too, but Friday I'll probably have to drive.

striker_dj 07-25-07 06:50 AM

Best commute yet (I've only been commuting for a month now). I finally got a rack bag and ditched the backpack which was great to get rid of. Unfortunately I will have to put on the backpack some days to take a laptop with me.

vtjim 07-25-07 07:16 AM

Drove wife's car to dealership for maintenance today. :( Yesterday's commute home was nice though. I'm still trying to find a ticking sound when I pedal. Not the drivetrain. Possibly rear suspension, but I can't figure out which point. I'm dripping some lube into the parts that pivot to see if it stops.
