By the time I started out, the rain showers had stopped. Most of the way I was dodging large puddles. My Performance Bike vinyl rain jacket is ripping along the zipper, so I'm going to shell out some dough for a quality rainjacket ( Bellwether? ) and rainpants...and some detachable fenders...and a rearview mirror...
The after rain sunshine hitting Nantucket Sound was a cool sight... I noticed on the way home that regular gas is $3.02 a gallon. It was $2.99 yesterday!

buzzman 11-13-07 11:16 PM

did a 40 mile road ride yesterday at a good pace and I was pretty chilled out on my ride today. Certainly set no records on the way in  but it was a very pleasant commute. Started the day with rain and ended with clear skies.

Bootiful.

pinkrobe 11-14-07 09:12 AM

It was actually pretty fargin' cold today. The radio claimed -2C, but a co-worker said it was -10C at his house. I need to move faster with my pogie plan.

1ply 11-14-07 11:53 AM

On the way home yesterday I had to stop by the side of the road to put on different (warmer) gloves and a headband for my ears. Gets cold when the sun drops now :(

I had some jack***** in a truck give a long honk at me (I think) just as he was entering the on ramp to the highway. Guess he felt all powerful since I couldn't follow and catch him there. A couple minutes earlier he was stuck in traffic and I would have easily caught him.

Nice ride in this morning, started to drizzle about 1/2 way into my ride. No big deal, still warm enough out there. Problem is with the glasses.... gotta go for the surgery I think.

Big Ron 11-14-07 11:56 AM

Nice ,warm ride in this AM. Finally getting back to normal after a bout of bronchitis nearly a month ago. Has me worrying about riding in cold temps, but this AM's 50F was very nice! Should be ~ 70-75F for the ride home

mtnwalker 11-14-07 12:14 PM

The weather is getting weird. Last night's commute home was unusually warm. This morning's commute was also warmer than usual. All I had on today was my thin outer shell and I still felt overheated. Otherwise, the commute this morning was nice and peaceful. I saw a guy fixing a flat and offered my help. He said no so I went on my way.

Beautiful morning for a ride in today. Only day this week I will be commuting unfortunately. I will be testing out my headlight again tonight. I know that it's not nearly bright enough so I have to take it easy. Luckily the big hills are all up on the way home in the dark. It's in the 60's now but will only touch the 40s the next few days, with some snow in there possibly.

Researcher 11-14-07 03:04 PM

Finally returned to my bike commuting this morning. Been away for about a month and a half (just lazy, sigh)
I'm hoping to get back to 1-2 times/week and maybe ride thru the winter as well.

Rode the Trek hybrid into work today. The weather was very nice on the way in this morning. But the 3 "gnat-clouds" I rode through (face first) were not real fun! I guess they hang out near lakes. I didn't spy the first cloud until it was far too late (spi-tooey!) But I was ready for #2 and 3 (head down, tucked)

The ride home should be nice - decently warm for this time of the year
I need to buy some breathable pants of some sort. My Nike sweats on top of my spandex cycling shorts got pretty humid

Hello everyone. This is my first time posting about my commute here, but I am a regular bicycle commuter. It's only about 3 miles to work so ride almost every day. I ride home for lunch and back to work and then back home again so about 12 miles a day. My regular commuting bike is a Schwinn World Sport that I converted to a single speed, so I can just jump on it and go. It's very windy here today, the weather report says 30mph with 44mph gusts, but I managed to stay upright :) I hope everyone has a good ride home today.

trombone 11-14-07 06:21 PM

Hello James! Great to her about your ride. Going home for lunch is quite a nice idea!

I had a great ride in this morning - one of those days where it all seemed effortless, although I made good time.

I'm going into the LBS this weekend to talk about getting a singlespeed. I've pretty much given up on using the gears on my commute...

b_young 11-14-07 09:35 PM

An amazing ride home tonight. I pulled out of work going downhill at a high rate of speed and noticed no wind at all. I had a huge tailwind for 7 miles. I did the 7 in 20 min which was unthinkable for me. Then it happened, I had to turn north into the wind. The last 3.5 miles was done in 15 min. Still a personal best. 10.5 mile commute in 35min with trunk/pannier and about 15lbs in it.

welcome James!

Windy here in Boston on the way home tonight. sometimes it pushed me home and then it turned right around and got me in the face. Unseasonably warm.

craigdurkee 11-15-07 05:29 AM

bit foggy to start but then getting up 28 degrees loving it yipeeeeeeee

jyossarian 11-15-07 07:58 AM

63F and threatening to rain. Commute was faster than usual and cagers more aggressive and unpredictable than usual. Had one hard stop due to a cab cutting me off and stopping to turn right. Had some others try the same thing so I got more aggressive w/ lane positioning and switching lanes.

tarwheel 11-15-07 08:01 AM

I was gonna try to bike commute today, but a cold front arrived just as I was waking up. The forecasters had predicted rainstorms this morning, but they are often wrong. It wasn't raining when I got up, so I checked the radar on-line and line of showers was just about to hit my area. Given my aversion to riding in the rain, it was a good call because we finally received some much-needed rain. It is also supposed to be very windy today, and get much colder as the day progresses. I'll be back in the saddle tomorrow, when it's supposed to be much colder but dry.

swifty 11-15-07 08:06 AM

Brrrrrrrrr

genel 11-15-07 08:28 AM

:D4000 Miles!:D

And cold ones at that. 35f, windy. Traffic was light, but more obstables then usual, two police cars, numerous school buses, trains, every red light, construction crews, and the landscape armada!

Planning a celebratory lunch, and hoping wind dies down as forecast.

pinkrobe 11-15-07 09:43 AM

Pretty reasonable ride in today. It was a little shilly, but not bad. I think I'll have to make my own poges this weekend, since nobody seems to want to sell them to me. Boooo!

SpiderMike 11-15-07 10:32 AM

Should start in notiing that my ride to work is nothing but going East and South. Many long straights going Southbound. And the cool front just came through overnight down here.

Temp 60 degrees. NNE winds at 20 to 30 mph. Was stoked everytime I would turn southbound.

Not so stoked about my ride home.

Edit: On my fixed gear.. 48*17

HardyWeinberg 11-15-07 11:49 AM

Basically everything that could roll against me and cost me time did, but I still got in not measurably much later than anyone else. But it was annoying there for a bit.

And my ******* cygo nimh battery is dead, trickle-charging, from something like 55 min of use.

AND I dressed way-wrong, but had spares and changed, Clark Kent style, in the daycare's bathroom before heading out to work.

Cyclon 11-15-07 12:03 PM

Mid-November in SoCal, and it's still so warm; 73 deg F at 9 in the morning. So I get to continue to bike in shorts.

I did a stupid thing today. I overstuffed my messenger bag with too much weight. When I was approaching the entrance of my office I unclipped my right foot and my overweight messenger bag shifted left causing my bike to lean left. Oops, can't put my right foot down. Struggling to unclip left foot with chance that I can recover from the fall. Failure. The outcome was a slow speed drop resulting in a few scuffs on my knees and elbows; no blood though.

I guess the good part was that no one in the office saw my embarrassing accident. At least no one came out to ask me about it.

:( My first scuffs on my bike though. Levers and rear tire quick release.

And my new rack comes in tomorrow from the Brown Santa Claus. Aiy! It's a sign.

James827 11-15-07 12:37 PM

My regular commuter bike had a flat tire this morning, so I rode a back up bike. It was cold about 23 deg but has warmed up to 45 or so. Not very windy today, just a slight breeze. I will have to pedal fast home tonight because the bike I rode today has no headlight.

Pig_Chaser 11-15-07 01:39 PM

bit cold as per usual. Had the right number of breathable layers on. There was a very thin layer of ice coating everything this morning so there were a few 'white knuckle' moments but obviously it all turned out okay. Great to be back on the bike after working out of town for over a week.

Sparky005s 11-15-07 04:49 PM

Weather is still beautiful in North CA. Perfect for riding. I wear a light long sleeve shirt and a light coat in the morning and a t shirt on the ride home. I'm trying hard to lose weight, and I've managed to lose 8 pounds over the last 2 weeks, thanks in part to the bike rides. 2 months ago when I started riding again, I was ALWAYS the slowest bike on the road. Today, I blitzed past three different riders! Wahoo!! I"m still a turtle, just not the slowest turtle!

Had a close call with another cyclist. I was riding on the sidewalk, as there is no bike lane, the right lane is too narrow to share, and the cars are doing about 45 mph. Also, there is almost no ped traffic in this area. So I"m on a downhill stretch, going fairly fast, when this guy drops down from some dirt path to the right of the sidwalk and pulls right in front of me, going about half as fast as I am. I had to slam on the brakes. I don't think he ever even looked to clear himself. It was close.

Later on, I was again riding downhill at a decent clip (for me) and I was on the road, in the right hand portion of the right lane. There is a wide right turn coming up, and this pickup truck pulls up to my left, matches my speed and starts to make the right hand turn! I give the guy a WTF look and he slows down so I can go past. I guess I should have taken more of the lane, but it's not a right turn only lane. Oh well.

craigdurkee 11-15-07 06:58 PM

once again a hot morning and things got off to a great start, pleasant weather and an even more pleasing ride, loving the riding so much and the new bike is also proving to be a great commuter, the feeling off not having to be so careful on the roadie is awesome

buzzman 11-16-07 01:17 AM

strangely warm this morning and then a sudden rain. I was running late so I took Comm Ave., which is a nightmare lately with construction. Had to go from my office to another location today just as the rain hit hard- the drivers were insane.

I got a scary phone call from my wife who had been riding along Soldier's Field Road on the bike path by the Harvard Boat house when a car went out of control on the roadway and 360'd into the guardrail right next to her. I checked out the scene tonight and it did a number on the guardrail. I can't even think about how dire the consequences could have been. Can't even go there. She was fine but really freaked out by it.

I am ever thankful for that guardian angel of a guard rail. I hope they fix it soon because it will provide little or no resistance the next time it gets creamed.

craigdurkee 11-16-07 01:40 AM

great weather on the way home today as well, 33 degrees and a few errands to run giving me 40 odd k for the return trip all in all a very satisfying day

1ply 11-16-07 07:06 AM

Cold out there today. Some icy spots are starting to appear. I think I will finally go get that bike I've been talking about and be ready to put the studded tires on.

As someone mentioned pogies above, I'm thinking that it can't be that hard to make a pair. I'll get the bike first and then see about getting some material to make a pair. I'll let you know how it goes.

tarwheel 11-16-07 07:16 AM

Great ride in this morning. A cold front came through NC yesterday so it is much colder and windy today, but not as cold as last week. Temps were in the high 30s when I left home, which I find very comfortable for riding. I had a tailwind at my back most of the way, so it was a piece of cake. Hopefully the wind will die down by the time I head home this afternoon. Tomorrow's ride will be much more challenging. The low is supposed be down in the upper 20s, and I'm going on a 50+ mile ride with friends starting about 9 a.m.

JoeyMac 11-16-07 07:38 AM

getting real cold, I can't pedal as fast... now I have more cars honking at me from behind because I am slower. Kinda bugs me.
