Smooth rolling
Back on after a couple weeks employment uncertainty.
Pushed off the road by a schoolbus that ran a stopsign.. I could have sworn that a reflective vest, two headlights and reflective anklets were at least a small indication of my presence. I'll get the bus number tomorrow. Cool ride apart from that. |
A little hazy today, quite a bit warmer than last week. 57F, light winds. Nice ride in until some guy in a pickup started swearing at me. Never could figure out what his problem was. I'll admit to threading past a few cars at the light. There was lots of space, it's a long light, and in a school zone, with crossing guard. And it's an easy spot to get right hooked, if you're on the right. Ruined my day.

One degree above freezing this morning, but I was wearing tights under exercise pants tucked into my boots, by way of trying out base layers and exercise pants I picked up for a tour next week. I'm hoping for rain and cold this week to give the new clothes a proper test, and warmer weather the week after to make this all for nought.
|
My coldest commute yet - pessimistic home gauge read 18*F, local radio (1 mile away) said 25. Bundled in three layers on top, two on bottom, wool socks w/MTB shoes, and medium gloves. A new Turtle Fur kept the neck & ears warm, will have to go back for the balaclava to cover the head - 20mph+ descents are cold thru the top of the helmet!
Will have my first Standard time ride home in the dark. Didn't get to ride last week. |
This will be my first ride since the time change last week. Spent some time warming up in FLA and now it's back to the grind.
Nice ride today, a few minutes from home I realized that I'd forgotten my pants - had to turn around and go back or sit at work all day with swishy loose tights on all day - nope HAD to go back :) Not as tired as I expected to be. I figured that after a week off the saddle I'd be pooped when I got to work. Not the case :D |
Ghost town! Very little traffic today - I got the hole shot at two lights and then made all 5 sprint lights [well, one was really yellow]. It wasn't very cold either, right around freezing. Good times...
|
Coldest ride ever for me this morning: 15 degrees, but little wind. Not too bad. I think I won't ride below 10 degrees. My fingertips were cold and my feet a little too. Wore 3 layers on top and two over my biking shorts along with booties and a balaclava. We're supposed to get some snow tonight and throughout the week so it doesn't look good for my road bike commute.
Bought a cheap Bell headlight to go with my Cat Eye EL400 light that is not quite enough for riding in the dark roads. I road Friday night with it and had to go a little slower than I wanted to. I'll try it out tonight. |
Holy snow, batman! (Though I kinda can't wait for the snow to come... I know I'll be eating those words in a couple months though ;))
7C this morning, but very misty/cold with the damp in the air... The cold I'm getting over made me fairly out of breath initially too. Mini-rant: Almost everyday I get some JAM pulling into my lane almost side swiping me (van last week, cab today) to try and avoid the left turning car in front of them... My lane for the most part is all parked cars, so I have clear use of the extreme left of the lane out of the doorzone, and the full lane in the longer gaps between cars/intersections - I mostly travel at traffic speed or more, as the flow gets slower toward the core of downtown. It's just they never seem to check their damn mirrors. What happened to Mirror, Signal, Manouevre? Luckily I expect it, and it gives me chance to scream a "HEY!" at them which releases tension :) /Mini rant. Despite the weather and horrible driving, I still love riding my bike. :D |
almost no traffic today. nice commute... it's finally cool here, down to the 70s today. perfect.

My favourite though was that one time when I was nearly sideswiped on Bay St. by a car that had a big "Safety First!" banner attached to the inside of the right passenger window. Such irony! |
My ride takes me trough a stretch of forest, and as I was about half way trough I heard a loud 'snap' to my right. I looked, and was confronted with 7 deer looking like I just busted them breaking into a car or something. 2 of them were beautiful 8 or 10 pointers, the rest were does. We stared each other down for a few seconds before they ran off. Made my day.

Lots of idiots driving today.
BTW, much respect to all you snow devils. |
good commute weathe rin the southern hemisphere starting to get alot better now, around 27-28 degrees today and no wind.
love it also first trip out on the new kona sutra, what a pleasure to commute on. |
Nice ride, not too cold, and not too stupid. Raised saddle 2mm , feels like I'm pedalling more efficciently. I saw the schoolbus that drove me to the shoulder yesterday and will hope to see again tomorrow with a camera in my hand. People like that should not drive our children.

Made every single green light today over the 3.5 miles!
|
wettest commute i've ever done.
Found out my saddle bag isn't too waterproof. Cellphone & wallet got drenched. |
45F and dry. Had to shed a long-sleeved T-shirt before the end of the 6-mile ride.
I hate starting my commute groggy... but I do kind of wake up along the way. |
Moist. Thought the rain had stopped, but it had slowed to a drizzle. My pants are damp, but no signs of obvious wetness.
|
Cold today, started out at 27f, light wind. Was comfortable for the first half of the ride, but it was 10 degrees warmer at the office, and I ended up way to warm. Brought shorts for the ride home as forecast is for 60f.
Heavy traffic today, and the really clear air seemed to carry the rode noise for miles. Over a mile long backup at one intersection. The county replaced a relatively safe 4 way stop sign that routinely had 1/2 mile backups with an overpass with two dangerous high speed T intersections, which creates a mile backup further down the rode. Only a politician could call it an "improvement". Note to self: never carry kiwi fruit in bike bag, 'nuff said. |
Windy as hell today! I managed to get my wife out of the house a couple of minutes early, and we were rewarded with a smooth ride in and reduced traffic. Not quite as fast as yesterday, but much better than usual.
|
Windy as hell here in Colorado Springs today as well. My normal 40 minute ride took almost an hour. If I wasn't going slow straight into a 35 mph wind, it was crossing me and knocking me all over the trail so I had to go slow anyway. Debris and tumble weeds all over the trail, there was a downed tree across the MUP in one spot and I had to dismount and walk over it. Going to have to be careful going home in the dark this evening, a lot of this debris will likely still be there, good test of my lights I guess.

Looks like most of my cold has dwindled away, still feeling a little tightness in the chest but otherwise fine. Had to knock on a cab who was pulling into my lane (again, no mirror checking while they try and dart about playing the lane-game) - no drama though, and they all eventually get snarled up in traffic anyway. Work "team building" paintball tomorrow, though I'll still be riding to catch my ride out to Niagara region.. yay for transportational cycling :D |

Put your wallet and cellphone in carrier/grocery bags, wrap them up in them and then put them into your saddle bag. A big bag to line your saddle bag itself would be helpful, too. Easiest fix for non-waterproof bags IMO. Spare bags can also help in times of need, to cover shoes in crazy rain, etc. (even with SPDs, grocery bags over shoes will still allow for clip-in).
Do plastic bags on cycling shoes really stay on? |
Took a roundabout way in today, thanks to a schedule mix-up. The streets were a bit wet, but not a bad morning for some extra miles.
|
Leaving the driveway into my building last night and stopped at a red, I was rewarded for my patience with the chance to watch two young deer cross another building's driveway. The deer looked like they were just enjoying the heck out of life, and all the nearby cars slowed to watch.
|
Massive Temperature swing today, it was 2c yesterday and 16c this morning. What a beatiful ride for mid November in Winnipeg.
|
Terrible commute this morning. Left the bike at work last night as I was meeting friends in town and didn't have time to ride home and get back into the city again.
So this morning I was on the bus. Standing up all the way in stop start traffic on Anzac bridge, hot and uncomfortable, whilst watching cyclists whizzing past much faster than the traffic. Makes me realise just how good it is to ride in every day! |
Commute was very crazy this morning. At first I was happy about the 50F temps, but the smile faded when I was showered with a bunch of dust and small rocks by a street sweeper. My eyes and throat are still irritated. Later, my phone fell out of my bag and some evil drivers decided it would be fun if they could run over it...sigh. I felt better after I told myself that it's just a phone and I wouldn't let drivers ruin my ride.
|
Started off at 30 degrees out the door at 6:10 am. 2 miles later it was 60 degrees and 20-30mph wind. I could not believe it. I stopped and promptly stripped off all my layers. Arrived at work in shorts and long sleeve under shirt with my long fingered gloves between my hands and bars. Cold front to warm front in 2 miles. I would not have believed this had I not lived it.

Another beautiful day in America's Finest City. This morning it was 58F and 70F when I left work this evening. It made my 27 miles r/t commute very pleasant.
Watched the fighter jets fly over my head at Miramar AFB on the way home. Fortunately they were high enough that it didn't hurt my ears. One time I was right under their landing path that crosses my route and boy that really hurt my ears. Great day. |
