-7F (-22C) and calm winds. Lake Champlain was steaming again, and I saw the same cyclist I saw last week. We said hi to each other. Nice to see another lunatic out there. :D He didn't have anything covering his face, either. No glasses, no goggles, nothing. His skin was red. Maybe he doesn't ride too far.

Commuted on my new road bike for the first time this morning.

Absolutely flew through Regent's Park compared to when I was riding my Raleigh mtb.

That is all:D

I was running late today, but made it in on time. My wife took the opportunity to berate me for not taking out the garbage, and then again for not making the straps long enough on the battery holder that I made for her light. Sigh.

My room mate had a class this morning at the same time I start work, so we both left the same time. I was on my undergeared SS snow MTB and he was on his road racing commuter bike. He is a big show off and cycles dangerously. He was going to turn left to take a different path, and in typical form, took the turn really fast and hard and since the road was covered with slush he went down and his lock fell off his rack and went sliding across the entire road. I stopped and made sure he was alright and then took a nice ride to work on my own. I think I prefer to commute on my own. You can be much more 'self-centred' and go at the excact pace and course you want.

 Those crazy Roomates.

Cold ride in this morning, 21F with a wind chill in the low teens. Luckily for me the wind was blowing the direction I was going so I got a nice push the whole way to work :) Almost got hit a few times while leaving my apartment complex with people who feel like they need to speed through it

ModoVincere 01-29-07 10:20 AM

No ride in today...very cold here in ATL (18F according to this morning's news), but I had a Dr's appointment to get to then had to haul arse to the office for a meeting. I don't think Lance Armstrong could've made the meeting from the Dr's office.

Anyway...the wife is starting a campaign to get me to stop commuting. She's pointing out all the dangers all the time now.

idcruiserman 01-29-07 10:34 AM

Forced myself to ride this morning, but it ended up being a nice ride. I'm getting a bit burnt out I think, especially with the lame-o same-o weather. 19F this morning with a bit of headwind. I cobbled together a 12-28 cassette from a 12-25 and an 11-32, which worked great.

New bus driver this morning, she hits the worst bump on the ride in doing 45mph. Shakes the heck out of the bike rack on the front of the bus, it's bouncing up and down. For a few momments I have a vision of the Raleigh flying off into the road only to be crushed by the bus. Fortunately the bike stayed put, the driver apologized and slowed down for the next bad spot.

HardyWeinberg 01-29-07 10:49 AM

Freezing fog, way slippery on the route in today. Could make for a long week if it's like this every morning.

Stopped to chat about ice w/ that roller-skier who has the reverse commute from me (seen him at every point, just about, of my 1st 5 miles leaving home, last 5 miles heading home)

cooperwx 01-29-07 10:53 AM

No bike today: 9°F and breezy with 1/2" powdery snow from overnight. And the buses were on a two hour delay.

Upper teens tomorrow morning...I'll be back!

(EDIT: vtjim, you rule! But I guess you have to. How many 20°+ mornings do you get in the winter?)

vrkelley 01-29-07 11:01 AM

29F frosty tranquil ride. I had too many layers on to do high cadence. Passing all those traffic jams, somehow it didn't matter :)

Wulfheir 01-29-07 11:06 AM

I'm playing shinny after work tomorrow so I bungee'd a hockey stick to my bike, and brought 1 skate in a backpack. I'll bring the other skate in tomorrow.

:p Wait'll you hear from some of the Canadians. -7 is like a day in the tropics for them! We're just in the coldest part of the winter. It'll start warming up soon enough. (Relatively speaking.) Supposed to be low 20s to low 30s on Friday.

crtreedude 01-29-07 11:37 AM

Did someone mention the tropics? Can you get banned for posting pictures of the tropics this time of year? :;

You should be!

-15 C here in the morning... or so the web said. Didn't feel that cold though, maybe because it was very calm. As opposed to a few days back: -10 C with very strong winds felt more like -30 C... Today is just so beautiful: a bright sunny day with white freshly fallen snow reflecting the sun's glow and making everything even brighter. Feels like spring despite the cold!

Too many layers: overheated slightly. Some little roads are really quite unpassable if you have slicks, but feel very nice with my front knobby: like doing cross-country skiing on a bike. I should really go skiing... Hey, anybody with a car in the GTA, wanna join? ;) :D

As I was riding today, I kept repeating the motto I read on BF recently: "Pain is just weakness leaving the body". Works like magic! Just as you wanna slow down, tell yourself this - and much to your surprise you'll find yourself speeding up. :)

Strange... why suddenly now? Was she waiting it out hoping it was a phase? Did you fall recently? Are the road conditions worse due to weather?

It's a shame our families often try to discourage us. My parents used to be against my riding a bike in anything below 60 F ("You'll catch a pneumonia" :D) and anywhere there were cars. They have mostly given up on trying to force me to follow their ways, partly because they recognize I know a lot more about cycling than they do, and partly because they realized cycling is very important for me and I won't just give it up or moderate it according to their wishes. But it's easier with parents than with spouses. Thank God my boyfriend is mostly supportive (he's a cyclist too) although he does give me that "Are you SURE you wanna do it?" looks when I'm about to head out in some particularly nasty weather (say, right after a snowstorm).

I challenge you to put your mind in that state and go out in shorts and flip-flops. I betcha the mind will jump into "Winter! Survival!" mode in an instant. :D

TRaffic Jammer 01-29-07 02:00 PM

That's how I take the garbage out....

Not exactly sure why this is starting all of the sudden. I have a theory though. My daughter is turning 15 at the end of next month. That means a learners permit for driving. My wife is probably starting to freak out about that, especially with all the news stories of deadly teen driving accidents all the time here in ATL. So, this fear is probably getting placed on my back since I'm an easy target for it.

46 degrees here and 6:30am, off for my daily commute to the airport. during my 3 mile commute this morning I did see only one walker out. For the past 4 years on my commute, I see this lady a lot. Of course that early in the mornings, it is dark and it is just a hello as I pass by.

On the ride back to the house at 11am, I came to an intersection where the coppers had the road blocked. I was thinking as I approached that it was probably an accident, but they had the traffic stopped for an approaching funeral procession. It was about an eighth of a mile away yet and it looked really long, so I went on across and kept on riding. I was about a mile and a half down the road when I started to see the traffic again.

It's nice to cross a busy road when the traffic is real light. Some times it takes a few risky minutes to cross this road. Today was a smooth commute. Rain tomorrow is in the forecast, so I may get to take a day off.

Happy Biking!

Fixie is still in the shop so I rode the Trek 5200 to work again. I guess I ought to at least put the training wheels on it.

Yeah, teen driving can be quite something... We had a couple of accidents in Ontario within a fairly short time of each other: teen drivers crossing the yellow line and entering the oncoming lane for no reason. In both cases the car was loaded with teens, and I think death tolls were something like 4 and 5 respectively. I was really amazed at some of the language in the newspapers. There were phrases like: "A car full of teenagers veered into the oncoming lane and collided with a van, killing all five teens." Yeah, right, the bad nasty car decided to veer and the poor little driver had nothing to do with to.

We're all gambling our lives when we set wheels on the road, whether two or four. Fortunately the chances of losing are quite low, statistically speaking. :)

OldLion 01-29-07 04:29 PM

Woo hoo!

Very first commute to work by bike, ever. I guess at age 36 its better late than never. When I lived in the 'burbs this would have been impossible (for me).

Now, it only took me 18 minutes by bike and although it was 32F out, I arrived feeing warm and flush.

Sorry, newbie excitement, happy to "join the ranks."
