Flimflam 09-17-07 10:45 AM

Though it wasn't too cool this morning, today is my first commute back in trousers. I donned the fleece pants with zippered ankles, and ended up having to hike them up to keep cool - but it's a sign of change. Good ride in, nothing to report I don't think - not much usually happens in 3 miles :p

caloso 09-17-07 11:12 AM

Nice and cool, although a bit breezy. It's been an unusually cool summer and it doesn't look like there'll be any last-gasp heat wave that we typically get in September.

I took the long way in: 26 miles rather than 4. A nice way to start the week.

Cyclon 09-17-07 11:17 AM

It was cool enough this morning that I actually had to start the first few minutes with a wind breaker on. Still wearing shorts though.

BikingGrad80 09-17-07 03:37 PM

Kind of annoying with 30 degree temperature differentials between my morning and evening commute. I can either freeze in the morning in shorts or overheat in the evening in long sleeves.

gbcb 09-18-07 12:50 AM

Raining on the way in, so I took it slow. Forgot some stuff and had to go back for lunch, by which time it had worked up to a solid downpour. Typhoon Wipha is headed our way -- assuming the office is still open tomorrow, I look forward to adding "typhoon" to the list of ridiculous conditions I've commuted in :D

Or do what I (and probably others) do - bring shorts in the panniers with you to wear on your way home.

Nice ride yesterday. Chain skipped on me when starting from a stop. Second time now wonder why?

Definitely fall is coming. Getting cold in the mornings :(

vtjim 09-18-07 06:39 AM

Low 40s. This time I just went with long sleeves and shorts. :) Almost whacked a squirrel. The stupid thing ran right out from the trees and my front tire obstructed my view of it as it scampered across my path. Saw some other riders out. Passed a couple of 'em. The rest were going the other way. One woman looked like she was riding in subzero weather.

striker_dj 09-18-07 06:50 AM

First flat today on the commute, and it had to be right in the middle of my commute as well. So I'm only about 3 miles from home and 3 from work, but that could get to be a long walk.

I sure am glad I came here and took all the recommendations to have a spare tube and few tools in a bag!

maddyfish 09-18-07 06:54 AM

Heaven as usual. .3 miles to my bike-friendly school where I volunteer.

seafoamer 09-18-07 07:04 AM

This morning I rode my 1st commute ever. There was good & bad.

I have a small 3 mile commute in. I'll do a bit larger 4 mile route home to avoid a busy intersection.
The commute in was real nice. Probably about 45F & sunny. I got anxious & made a wrong turn too early, but turned around and all was good.

The bad was: when I arrived, I rested my bike against the building at the loading dock. Rang the loading dock buzzer & nobody answered. I went around to the front enterance and through to the loading dock to get my bike and bring it in. When I opened the door, the door clipped my tire and knocked my bike down shattering my mirror. 8^(
When I came in I realized that (although I brought with me my keys to my office) I forgot my closet keys with my shirt, socks & shoes. Thankfully I rode in w/ my jeans in my messenger bag, so I didn't have to wear my biking knickers all day. But I'll be wearing my Hi-Viz shirt, and MTB shoes all day.

Hopin' for a good ride home!

.3 miles? Why bother with a bike?

mikepop 09-18-07 08:24 AM

A lot of coasting today, since a few lights turned red while I was a ways off and I know I can coast and still get there for the next green. A good ride overall, if a bit chilly (40F). Wore full gloves for the first time this season.

Mr_H 09-18-07 08:48 AM

Man it's been ages since I posted what my commute was like.
It's starting to look like we're getting one last 'hurrah' of summer here. I was able to pull off shorts and Tshirt this morning, but yesterday I had to wear a jacket in the morning. It's been a rough couple of weeks as I've been recovering from a shoulder injury and haven't been able to bike into work as much :/ (stupid trees jumping out at me while mountain biking).
Soon I'll have to hang up the roadie and break out the commuter, with fenders lights and all.

nmanhipot 09-18-07 08:51 AM

Lost another front spoke last night after nearly killing myself running into a rain-filled pot-hole last week. Spent half-an hour and 95 bucks at the bike shop last night. NOT my idea of an efficient commute. Of course, now I have matching red-stripe tires and my front wheel doesn't wobble. I think I'm going to have to spring for those Mavic Speed City's pretty soon. That's 7 busted spokes on this set of hoops since January.

Fantastic. This morning I was over 10F cooler than it has been at 71F. Going home yesterday was 95F also 10F cooler than it was Friday and 15F cooler than it has been for many months. Time to break out the long sleeves, fall is here!

Going in this morning I was riding in center of lane on a very low traffic road, a bike lane to my right, parking spaces further right. A wrong way riding kid came flying out of a side street making a left turn right into the BL adjacent to me. Would have been a head on crash if I was not already in the primary lane. The kid had no idea I was there and had a full face of low sun.

Great morning! Started out at 48 degrees - put on the arm warmers, knee warmers and skull cap, once the sun came out started peeling layers as needed. Took a bee in the mouth, that's always fun  I quickly spit it out then waited for that numb feeling to hit my tongue.

Awesome ride home. Heaviest rain I've biked in for a while, but my rain jacket and waterproof pants kept me pretty dry. Shoes were another story entirely.... need to get some sort of waterproofing worked out there.

The typhoon (apparently one of the biggest in to hit Shanghai in a while) means the office is officially closed tomorrow, but I might have to ride in anyway to get some work done. We'll see...

finally, some awesome weather down here

BikingGrad80 09-18-07 09:47 AM

Pretty nice. A bit of a headwind on the way in. On Milwaukee ave between Chicago and Grand There was a wolf pack of cyclists, it's a very popular route for cyclists heading into the loop form the northwest. Guy in a car with a livestrong bracelet gave us a greeting honk and thumbs up.

pinkrobe 09-18-07 09:55 AM

It's definitely getting colder. It was only 2C this morning, and I set the lights up on both of our bikes. The lights aren't 100% necessary, but it's good to get used to the weight and routine of turning them on and such. Tomorrow's forecast is for snow mixed with rain...

7rider 09-18-07 10:44 AM

I keep bumping the end of my fender stays with the toe of my shoes whenever I do a trackstand at a light which shoves the fender out of place. From now on, I'll just clip out. It's shorts and windvest weather lately in the morning.

caloso 09-18-07 10:53 AM

Arm and kneewarmer weather here.

eza 09-18-07 12:11 PM

Had a flat on the bike rack before going home last night. Changed tube, and about 3/4 of the way home started going flat again. was able to pump it up enough times to get me home. Decided to switchover to some Marathon Plus tires, patched the tube, and no problems on the way in today. I think I can feel the heavier tires (not sure what my stock ones were, but they were lighter), it was either that or the headwind, or maybe both.

seafoamer 09-18-07 01:49 PM

Welp, I did it. My 1st commute! Hopefully many more.
Round trip 7 miles.
Just under 70F coming home. Sunny blue skies.
I really lucked out with a beautiful day for my 1st commute.

chephy 09-18-07 02:10 PM

Got buzzed very close today. This hasn't happened to me for a long time since I figured out pretty safe/efficient ways to ride my usual routes.

This was on an uphill that I ride with some frequency. It was in a lane I'd normally call marginally narrow, but since I'm usually not the fastest thing on that uphill, to put it mildly, I stick to the far right (I don't really need three feet from the curb at that kind of speed anyway). But today this jerk in an SUV didn't bother to do any correction to the left; just blasted right through in the centre of the lane, nearly brushing me. I don't even know what it was: malice or oblivion. I get more pissed off at the former, but I'm more afraid of the latter...

Congrats! Sounds like a nice easy distance and a great day indeed. Keep it up! :)

^ Thank you, sir!

Buglady 09-18-07 04:27 PM

Brr. Chilly day. And note to self: when you feel a migraine coming on, take the dang drugs and then take the bus, because biking when you can't see out of one eye is a stupid idea...

Pinkrobe, my hat is off to you if you ride tomorrow. I certainly don't intend to! (The weather change is probably the source of my migraine)

(and now I'd better get oof the computer and go back to bed, because the drugs are wearing off again)

mud

Fun ride today including the mud....had a good long storm (Lawrence, KS has been dry) so that was a good thing. Was thinking of all the people who might have been looking at the mud trail up my back and I was thinking to myself, cool, I am 33 y/o and I still get to play in the mud.....

My commute requires me to ride for a spell across a beat up trail, yeah for me......

buzzman 09-18-07 06:37 PM

great ride in today. been occasionally riding in or home with my wife and it feels like we're on vacation instead of heading to or from work. great weather.
