Wet!

"Chance of showers", the paper says. Sure.

A light rain for the first two miles, then the next five in a torrential downpour. The kind of rain where you go, "well, at least it can't rain any harder than this!", and you find out that, yes, it can. The kind of rain where you can't see but 6 feet in front of you. I think I rode through some patches of 4"/hour rate of downpour. Puddles as high as my bottom bracket. It was insane, but kind of fun at the same time.

Finally a great morning after a crappy rainy week. Temps approaching 50, no breeze and sunny. Doesn't get much better for a morning ride. Wasn't trying too hard but still made good time to the office. Left a little late so I hit more traffic than usual. Looking forward to the temps near 70 for the ride home this evening.

hey all, its a beautiful day.
pinched a flat, then my key got stuck in my lock, and now it wont come out. patched the tire, but still leaking. but you know what, my friend, who just started to ride, just happened to have a spare tube. funny how things work out...

edbikebabe 05-05-08 10:09 AM

HARD. It is a short commute, but my legs were dead by the end. I think I'm going to start alternating, one day on the single speed, one day on the road bike.

It was a nice ride in today. BUT I FORGOT MY WORK SHOES!!! Oh, well, they are leather shoes per the dress code. I will just stay close to my desk today......

Commutus interruptus this morning. Had an eye doctor appointment mid-morning, halfway between home and work, and right next door to Starbucks. So here I sit, having very much enjoyed the first 7 miles, 3 cups of coffee, and some actual work (very nice to be able to focus on the very long to-do list without distractions from people needing something - hate it when they expect me to do my job :))

Just learned that the eye dr. and I had a bit of a difference of opinion about the appt time, though. Oh well - the best laid plans... hopefully they can squeeze me in soon so I can get to the office before my afternoon full of meetings begins...

A lovely day. I took a bit of a detour to get on the bike trail near the college. It makes a big loop of East Sac and Midtown and then puts you back on city streets at 20th and C. I work at 10th and L, so it's another 5 or 10 minutes from there, depending on the lights. I wore a long sleeved jersey today but it may be the last time for the season. Yay.

I did something new - I forgot my bike! On Friday, I left my bike at work to go meet a friend for a drink. I didn't remember it was there until 11:45 last night. :( I had to drive down and get it, or end up with two bikes at work, which is silly. The ride in was fine, but I still need a bigger gear. I was supposed to switch to 53x18 on the weekend, but... I left my bike at work... so...

gorgeous sunny day. Took 6 yr old to dentist on trail-a-bike. Wondered if he'd shake off the N2O in time for the ride back, was no problem. Took him home, swapped him onto his own bike, rode to school (lot of bikes there today), signed him in late, and then off to work and here I am.

Beautiful commute to work this morning. Clear skies and cool weather. I'm a big bird-loving geek, so I am really enjoying listening to the migrant songbirds along my route. My route 30 mile R/T route takes me through some mixed habitats so there is lots to see and hear. Sometimes I catch myself naming the bird species aloud as I recognize the song. I may have reached the pinnacle of nerdhood.

I was so relaxed by my serene ride this morning, that when I was snapped out of it by a run-in with a white Hummer (the car, not the bird!) I actually found myself shrugging it off (quite the opposite of my usual obscenity-laden, finger hoisting, reaction). The driver came up behind me on a single lane roadway, layed on the horn for a good 5 seconds, then passed by so close that I had to ride off the shoulder into the dirt. When I looked up and watched the rear of this big white Hummer driving off down the road, I found myself actually chuckling for a moment at the obsurdity of what had just occurred. It seemed too much of a cliche to have actually happened.

You need two pairs of work shoes so you can leave a pair at work. It's what I do and it works out great and you won't have to worry about carrying your shoes anymore.

Nice ride in this morning. Wore the sunglasses in the morning! Wether is really getting nice and that's bringing out all the commuters. I passed 3 on my way in to work. It seemed like allot because I saw them all in a 2 block stretch. Plus that's also 3 more than usual.

scoatw 05-05-08 02:58 PM

I rode in this morning, it was 47f. Back to my Cold-weather ensemble. Gloves and balaclava. I will definetly appreciate ridin' in in shorts when that time comes. Cause I know that the cool riding season is alot longer than the warm riding season. But I trucked in this morning, I left a little late so I tried to make up time when going downhill. The aftn was another perfect day to be riding a bike. Sunshine and perfect weather. Had a jerk drive by and gave me a F'you greeting. He was just jealous because he's stressed out from driving a box and having to pay $3.56/gal. I just ignored him. Tom'rw is going to be another great day, weather-wise.

Good day for a trip to Wal-Mart. Tail-wind and downhill going in. Weeee! Headwind and uphill on the way back. Boooooo! It was nice to have a breeze though, since it's about 85F. No dogs this time.

Must be nice to be far enough away from the main stretches. Where was the video taken?

Managed to miss the rain this morning. Nice ride.

Lots of angry cyclists out today though. One swore at me, another swore at a pedestrian who was doing nothing wrong (on an MUP). Chill out, folks!

girljen 05-05-08 07:52 PM

Didn't plan very well today. I was too cold on the way in, not enough layers. I was too hot on the way home, overdressed and forgot my water.

It was a character-building learning experience.

brainsan 05-05-08 08:53 PM

Head wind in, head wind out plus a flat. What a day!

my commute was fantastic. nice ride along the river this morning. great ride home. so thankful the bike path has been newly paved in a whole bunch of sections. I hope they repave the whole thing. I'm getting spoiled- no more bumps and tree roots!

neilfein 05-05-08 10:10 PM

Biked to the train station today. Since that means I have to lock my bike up there, I usually just walk to the train. I had to bring the bike into the shop after I got home, though, so it worked out well, or it should have: I got on the wrong train in Newark, and made it to the shop with ten minutes to spare.

2.4 miles on mostly-flat ground hasn't made me so out of breath for a while now.

stevage 05-06-08 01:07 AM

Took it easy, feeling sick. Some guy yelled something from a van, sounded like "...f***wit". Not sure what I did to upset him?

Also (re)discovered that biking makes you more vulnerable to temptation, like stopping and checking out the snowboard sales...:)

Today's commute was awesome as I started my new job at the bike co-op where I have been volunteering and got to ride the coolest bike to work... I needed to install some fresh tubes and tires and do a few little things to make a very smooth bike even smoother.

The bike came yesterday...

It will be a good week for taking the old girls out for their inaugural spring rides.

Big Ron 05-06-08 05:56 AM

Fastest ride in so far this year. 13 miles in 44 minutes = 17.7 avg speed-not too shabby given all the stoplights and the hilly terrain. Should have a minor tailwind on the way home too, so might even crack 18mph for an average. Saw another commuter out this AM too, fairly unusual to see anyone else that early...circa 6:15.

jpdesjar 05-06-08 06:29 AM

Nice ride this morning legs felt good even though I biked and ran yesterday. It was a bit foggy so I had my blinky going just in case.

Still wearing gloves in the morning, I can't wait until the shorts come out.
Cheers all~
:)

great commute in this morning. I stopped at the polling place down the road before hitting my normal route. When I was in line a lady asked if I felt safe 'doing that' - I said yes, but sometimes I don't - depends on who is driving by. Also had the curbside voting person say "Now that's the way to go out and vote!"

savethekudzu 05-06-08 07:06 AM

I left too late for that - perhaps this evening. A shame, really, because the polling place is only a block away from my normal route!

starla 05-06-08 07:20 AM

Low 60s, damp and a little cool and a little rain. Head wind is back, but it wasn't too strong. I'll be glad when this wet weather is gone.

Then again, in a month, I'll probably be wishing for it.
