2 days of cold misty weather. I took some pictures of the bike way I ride and put them on my web site home page yesterday. I hope you can visit it and see what it looks like. I enjoy riding to and from work everyday as I am sure most of you all do.

My bike had some problems with the basket I have, to carry my stuff with me. It has been a little tough to get my stuff to work and back until I made the repairs.



As most of you know, traveling on the hard roads can take a toll on the bike. My bike has a shock absorber seat and front forks. But nothin' on the back, Yet!

I made some serious changes and so far the basket ain't broke yet.

I will be talking about it in my blog later, so take a look at that when you can.

I am also showing a few more pics of the problem and the repair job.

first commute in a week for various reasons. the ride in in the morning was from my parents house and pretty fast. in the high 20's in the morning... compared to last week that felt downright balmy.

the wintry mix started falling right as I was leaving work. damn! no extra miles or stopping at the university for dinner like I had planned on today... just trying to get home as fast as possible before the road turned slick. and I did the last mile or so of it through a raging headwind. fun!

good commute overall despite the conditions on the homeward trip.

I was riding over by the LBS, they forgot to write down my serial number on the new 925. Cadillac Escalade crosses through the intersection in front of me, then I start into the intersection and he friggin' gets on the gas and pulls a u turn and almost hits me . Good thing I was paying attention and quickturned. I waved the dumazz through the intersection the first time, so he forgot in 5 seconds I was there? Palm slapped the hood hard enough to make him drop his phone. Phone connects, brain disconnects. Made a point of looking at his front plate like I was memorizing it to scare him into hopefully paying attention down the road . The law against driving on the phone can't start soon enough for me.

I love those countdown lights. Some drivers can't figure how I can time the lights to make the green.

Weather man predicted rain. Sun instead. That's pretty rare for Seattle. Great commute!

lovely ride in this morning. The temp was about 31F, which felt like a summer day. I was definitely not overdressed though.

barely remember the ride home tonight I had so much on my mind. The ice on the bike path and the Charles is slowly disappearing.

Looks like I jinxed it good by mentioning the lack of snow. We're due for some tomorrow night.

A beautiful ride this morning in DC, where tempatures hit a balmy 35 farenheit. I rode along the Potomac, were a fresh glaze of overnight ice took a small victory over the clash of liquid current and frozen entombnence. The varied ice formations, large floes, long cracks, pressure ridges, were the scars of this battle. The sky was clear and blue, and the Washington Monument stood out as a stark white needle in a sea of azure. A great morning for the silky smoothness of of a 42x16 SS road bike and crisp, clean air in the lungs. The weather and a hefty workload will keep me off the bike for the rest of the week, so today was a day to embrace the experience of being a DC winter bike commuter, and the evening wanderings through the city and past the White House were a nice cap to it all.

First ride on my new (to me) bike, got a flat on the way home. Was happy I'd picked up that spare tube at the bike shop, and that I now have some panniers to lug it around in. Did my first ever on-the-road tube change.

Memo to self: next time, remember to re-engage the brake cable after putting the wheel back on. Yipe! (Glad there's _two_ brakes on this thing.)

-13F / -25C on the cyclocomputer. That's a new personal record. Clear blue sky. Sunrise was lighting up the Adirondacks in pink hues, and Whiteface Mountain was a giant hulking snow-covered mass west of Lake Champlain. There was a single other person on 5 miles of MUP, walking a dog. He's a "trail regular."

Might not be able to ride for a few days if this nor'easter they're forecasting does some damage.

Had to skip the bike today b/c I've got a dentist appt midafternoon (the upside, though, is that I am not going back to the office afterwards, which is a very good thing given the messy weather we're having in DC.)

I walked/jogged to work. Did not bike in today because the combination of snow lately has made it too hard for me. I want to keep logging days on our local commute challenge, so I decided to go by foot. I was wishing I had cross country skis this morn.

-21C, no wind, light snow

33 degrees and snowing in our nation's capitol today. The wife was very being very passive-aggressive in urging me not to bike, but I explained that a fixie is much safer in inclement weather (I have a front brake). Only challenge is I needed to bring in a full suit and shirt, so wrapped it up in a dry cleaner plastic bag and a garbage bag. Rode through the rainy snow and rush-hour flying mud with nary a speckle, so I was pleased with that. Hope it doesn't dump too much today or getting home could be a pickle.

25F when I left this morning. Ride was slower today due to heavy traffic and tight squeezes. Had one cab honk at me cuz I took the lane in the bus lane. Not the cab lane, the bus lane. He wasn't supposed to be in that lane so I stayed where I was and ignored him.

They're predicting snow/freezing rain/wintry mix the next couple days starting tonight so I may put the fenders on the mtb so I have the option of taking the fixie or the mtb.

Loud thunder and lightning as I was prepping to leave this morning - my wife stuck her head in the garage and said, "Are you going to be all right?"
"I'll be fine - I've biked in rainstorms before" I replied, and she went back to bed.
As I opened the garage door, the rain started pouring down. >.< I recalled the last time I rode in the pouring rain and dropping temperatures I caught a cold, and thought about getting another hour's sleep and driving in. And then said, "Nah" and got another layer from the house.
Two miles down the road, the rain vanished. I chucked the top layer in the trunk bag and my persistence was rewarded with a wonderful ride in - clean air, perfect temperature, nary a drop of rain, and the quiet hiss of my tires going over the wet pavement. What a great start to the day.

Fargin' horrible ride in this morning [still better than the bus or car]. There's so much snow on the road that I had to be a scofflaw and ride sidewalks. Imagine piles of wet leaves on sloppy mud on top of ice, and you'll get an idea of what it's like to ride in this ****. You turn, you jacknife. If you don't turn, you drift sideways. Lovely! Two more days of this crap and it should be reasonable again.

The perils of riding on the road in this crap are greater than the perils associated with sidewalk surfing. During my 5km walk in, I didn't notice the usually bike tracks in my neighbourhood so they must have decided on alternative-alternative transportation.

I've sidewalk surfed (heh - I like that term) before. I just go into "I have no right of way" mode.

Wet pavement but the rain held off for my ride in. I did a longish ride through a headwind yesterday so my legs were a bit heavy, but I loosened up just as I was nearing work. I brought a jersey and bibs in case I can sneak out for a lunchtime ride.

yes, Yes, YES . . . I RODE MY BIKE TODAY!!! What about it?! Get over it already! . . . dontchu lookatme like that!

Rain coupled with a lack of fenders equals an "enjoyable" commute. For reasons even I can't fathom I didn't bother to bring an extra pair of shoes or even a towel. By the end of the ride I was so completely soaked that I was intentionally riding through deep puddles and rivers of runoff, like a kid on the way to school. My clothes still hadn't dried out by the end of the day, so I got to ride through the cold wind in soaking wet clothes. It was still kind of fun though.

Lots of hype about the storm, bu no much resuls. Enought ice on the way home to make he studs go silent most of the way home. There was one segment where I got to make first racks, and that was fun.

Steady rain for 2nd half of return commute. Radar showed next to nothing.

Ride home was a blast...I wish all winter rides on snowy days were like this. As I mentioned in probably too many places already, I was having so much fun that I even hollered "Get off the road" to an SUV who I had to follow at 10mph cuz he didn't seem too good at driving in the snow.
