Warm and humid ride in this morning, got pretty sweaty by the end of the ride. Gonna be in the mid 80s for the ride home, can't believe it's this warm already...

Itsjustb 03-27-07 07:48 AM

luckysnafu, don't get used to it. 82 as the high tomorrow, 58 as the high on Thursday. :-)

The theme for today's commute was impatience. At least 4 or 5 different drivers felt the need to race past me to get to a red light less than a half-second ahead of me, just so they could wait longer. Otherwise it was uneventful.

The weather forecast was calling for heavy snowfall overnight, but it didn't materialize. Instead, the white stufff started flying about 15 minutes before I left the house. Thankfully, it was warm enough yesterday that it's melting as soon as it hits the road. Thus, it was a wet ride in, but not sketchy by any means. The trip home may prove entertaining...

caloso 03-27-07 10:33 AM

The local weather people forecast rain so of course this morning was brilliantly clear. I rode the race bike rather than the fixed gear so I can join a group ride after work.

It's such a beautiful day that it'll be torture to wait that long.

15 degrees C, minimal wind, i'd say almost perfect weather. Wore shorts and long sleeved shirt, felt great.

Great ride in...let's see if the weather holds for the return ride. It's rare to have dry pavement on both runs.

damp down here after dry morning. Still, took quick lunchtime buzz up to nearby (19 miles roundtrip) state park.

I probably should have turned around at the end when I got to 'Hill Road' going down (ulp) to the park entrance, but it made a nice outing, and I have a mondo long day coming up Friday so I don't feel bad taking an extra 20 min for lunch today.

10 degrees cooler this morning than yesterday and the wind was pretty stiff out of the northeast (so, at my back mostly on the way in). The temperature during the ride home was hovering around 50, and the wind was still out of the East-Northeast. Fortunately, it was a steady 15mph, with some nice gusts, so I got quite the workout on the way home (edit: also did one-block, all-out sprints followed by about three block recoveries...I'm way out of shape).

mtnwalker 03-27-07 04:52 PM

42F this morning with a 17mph headwind throughout the whole 11 mile commute :( . I was beaten psychologically thinking "OMG, why am I so slow and weak today?" Kept telling myself "Its the headwind, its the headwind" as I pounded, coasted, and wheezed.
The good news is, according to Accuweather.com, I'm going to have a 17mph tailwind going home. :D I'm the fastast madapacka there.

tomg 03-27-07 05:48 PM

wind on my back, attempting to go the long way home (+20.0 miles) and temp at 76deg F, all was looking great! until about 10.0 miles into return trip, i hit a small pot-hole that was big enough to blow-out my rear tire :( , could not locate source and had to take the entire wheel off to put another tube in. while doing this i noticed there were hidden mounds of dog-doo, and i was recipiant of the smear technique (both shoes) :( , :( . ying/yang principle fits here!
cut the ride short, talked to a honda dealer about an insight "not on the east coast"; called it a day at 37.6 dst. total.

i think headwinds are the biggest spirit robbing conflict riding any distances. you just can't really get away from them, they are persistant. the fairing on my recumbenthalps some, but like you said, going the other way, with the wind pushing is fun!

Glad you had a good lunch run. True to form, it was a rainy return ride. Some sections of the road haven't been dry in weeks :p

Passed a wounded deer struggling after being hit by a driver (who had apparently moved on to bigger and better things) and the cop who had to deal with the situation. It was next to the curb, looked immobilized... I wonder if the officer would put it down right there or just try to keep it subdued until animal control showed up?

Also saw two women I normally pass each morning (they're on a walk) in the back of a cop car. One of the women was yelling about a ticket or something. The officers probably cited them for jaywalking, since when I pass them each time, they're in the middle of the street (thought they do wear dayglo jackets and blinkies). Traffic is slight at best at this time of the morning... but still, with sidewalks right there...

Looks like another awesome day in Atlanta. High is supposed to be ~80F (27C) with plenty of sunshine.
I'm working 2:30 PM to 6:45 PM so I'll be working on my *tan lines* on the ride in. :) Other days when I've worked this shift the traffic has been *light* for Atlanta.

30F and a good tailwind. (Translates to a bad headwind for the ride home. Blah.) Smart of me to keep the Hakkas on the bike. Lots of black (and otherwise) ice on the MUP this morning.

I had to MUP mostly to myself. Saw a trail regular on his bike, riding to school, and a couple other people, including a regular ped, but that was it.

Yesterday, the ride home had some excitement. I was almost home, riding on a residential street, and I saw a Jeep Cherokee turn onto the road and stop suddenly. Then I saw some guy walking around the vehicle. My sixth sense kicked in and I slowed way down to observe what was going on. He started screaming at the people in the Jeep. What the f#*@ do you want me to do?! %(#$*@ Blah blah blah $@#&@&*$% blah!!!

He was trying to open doors of the Jeep, and a woman inside was yelling back at him.

So I'm thinking, "Do I pass them, stop to call the cops, or turn around and run like a girl?" :D I saw a person coming out of a house, so I just kept going, giving the Jeep and irate dude a wide berth. Weird stuff.

I've been feeling self-conscious about the lighting on my singlespeed and have seen several PB Superflashes recently. So I decided to go for a pair and put them on my seatstays. Man are they bright! I rode home with some friends last night and got very good reviews about the new lights. Just in time as I have lots of night riding to do this week.

Mr_H 03-28-07 07:09 AM

I had to drop off the car at the mechanic this morning, so I tossed the roadie into the back seat, drove there, dropped it off, and biked into work. It's only an extra mile and a quarter and it gave me a chance to practice taking the lane (normally I'm on one lane roads and I don't get to take the entire lane as often as I'd like :) ).

Winds were terrible, 15-20 mph and then some, right in my face. I had a couple of gusts push me out into the street, thankfully no cars around. Between the wind and last nights jujitsu, I'm all tired out....ugggh

ModoVincere 03-28-07 07:25 AM

Nice ride in today. Took the route I normally take home, but in reverse direction. Made the ride in a little different for a change.

Beautiful morning. Just another week until the Cherry Blossoms are in bloom. I'm going to have to change my route to avoid the expected 1 million tourists coming to look at the trees. Most of my route will be gridlocked, so I should be able to snake my way through.

Relaxer 03-28-07 07:56 AM

sigh... I used to post here daily, but I switched jobs and my awesome, high-speed 5-mile berzerker commute through the middle of rush hour DC, has transitioned to a 2 1/2 mile sprint, which avoids all of the city traffic fun. It's so depressing. I know, I could still do the old commute, but I'm such an A-to-B guy and in the morning, I always want to spend as much time at home as possible, so I always end up dashing to work at the last minute. And at night, I'm heading straight home after work. The curse of many working fathers is that you get about an hour in the morning and an hour in the evening with your kids, and that's it. Fortunately, kids go to bed, so once 9:00 pm rolls around, I'm back out there doing laps at Haines Point.

But I sure do miss my old commute. On the plus side, I no longer have to pay for a gym to shower, because A) new job has showers, and B) I don't get all that sweaty from a ride that takes less than 10 minutes.

The good news is that we might be moving to Silver Spring in a year or two, which would be a quite excellent 24-mile RT commute. I could get behind that in a hot minute.

mtnwalker 03-28-07 09:09 AM

Cold ride in this morning, 38F. I thought my ears were going to freeze. Otherwise it was an uneventful commute except that my legs were so tired from battling the headwind yesterday, today the air resistance alone felt like a headwind  .

And yet for me it was actually dry at go-home-time last night. I wasn't expecting that at all.

Nice and brisk this am, frost but no ice. Very sunny.

caloso 03-28-07 10:08 AM

No bike commute today. Just as well, I went on the cross-wind-a-riffic Tuesday night hammerfest and got killed. My wife had an early work obligation and so I dropped her at the office and the kids at preschool before going to the office myself. Just an honorary Soccer Mom. I briefly thought I would try to talk on the phone while drinking a cup of coffee and yelling at the kids and putting on eyeliner, but decided to give my full attention to driving the van instead.

luckysnafu 03-28-07 11:05 AM

Another warm and humid morning but that will change overnight with a cold front/rain rolling through. I think this morning was designated "do not use your turn signal" day. I swear every car I saw turning this morning neglected to use their signal, I must have yelled at 3-4 of them.

M. Rhoten 03-28-07 12:59 PM

Today was a good day for me: my first bike commute in to work. I have a cold right now, and it was also pretty fricken cold outside this morning, but hey, it was time! I got pretty cold on the first big downhill near my house, then warmed right up on the first uphill and stayed that way all the way to work.

It's about 4.5 miles one way, mostly suburban arterials with bike lanes or wide shoulders, and one bad hill. Bad by my standards, anyway, a little over a mile at a 6-7% grade. I'm thankful I bought a touring bike with low low gears (I'm a "returning rider" aka "out of shape").
