Kind of a rotten ride this morning. Went about four miles when I noticed I had left my locks at home. So after turning around and picking them up, some moron doing about 60 in a 35 nearly takes off my left arm. Somewhere this morning I lost my sunglass. Oh and I got grease on my pants.

Still better than driving.

I got to practice my panic braking on the way home yesterday. I approached a guy walking his dog from behind while a car approached from the front. Car passes him when I'm about 20 feet behind. He immediately releases his dog's retractable leash and the puppy heads across the road.

Thankfully, I was going slow enough to stop but it wasn't graceful. He apologized. I told the guy he should look behind him and not count on his hearing. He got defensive and I pointed out that I might have been a car and smooshed his little dog. That struck home with him.

I got home to find a little cut on my calf from pedalstrike in my ungraceful stop.

Well, seeing as today was "bike to work" day, I decided this was the perfect time to take the plunge so to speak and start a semi-regular commitment to commute three days a week. Ride was wonderful, no sun, nice steady breeze coming of the ocean, but not to strong that I had to fight it. A slight mist, and just an overall pleasure to get out.

I beat a big t-storm home yesterday. The sky opened up two seconds (literally) after I put the bike in the garage and walked in the back door. If I'd taken the trolley, I'd have been drenched on the walk from the trolley stop. Heh.

Scott, after the year you've had you more than deserve it. Congrats.

Commute today was uneventful. I'm coming down with something (and 2 co-workers are out sick; guess it's going around) so headed home early.

Commute was hectic. I woke up late. Almost didn't ride in---then looked outside and checked the weather, saw it owuld be nice, and realized I couldn't live with myself if I was too lazy to ride in today. 15 mph headwind--not very fun. Got into work 5 min late. Oh, and my lungs are killing me---either because I have bronchitus or something or because I have been smoke free for a month and they are trying to eject the crap I put in them for the last 15 years.

[edit]---Oh, and then I dropped the arm of my dress shirt onto my chain and spend the first 20 min of work trying to get out a grease stain in the men's bathroom and explaining to people why my arm was all wet

Ride out East last night was fun, lots of wind/rain burn on my arms and legs, but was just fine. Ride home in the evening was different, it had cooled a lot and I was actually pretty cold - so I stopped shortly after setting off and put on my fleece. Rode the rest home with the fleece on, which was a wonderful thing - so glad I had it as backup.

Ride in today was nice, pretty much uneventful again.

Apparently tomorrow is Bike to Work day for Toronto though I can't seem to be able to confirm it. Bike Week starts on May 28th so I don't know if I heard wrong. Either way, I'll still be riding. MTB time again tomorrow, as I'm hauling the trailer back in the evening with my daughter in.

Could be worse... I went to scrub off a spot of chain grease on my leg, only to find it's a lovely series of bruises. Totally ruins the effect of my best skirt suit! (Bigwigs visiting today. I guess I'll stay behind my desk!).

I find my lungs give me trouble when I am overtired or on cold days. I have had problems with exercise-induced asthma, but it seems to be getting better. It does take a while for lungs to recover from smoking, but good on you for quitting!

Wonderful ride in this morning. It was cold but thankfully no wind. I noticed there were much more bike commuters on the roads. I actually had 3-4 other commuters with me where I'm normally alone. Nice to see people get out of their cars and on their bikes. I'm just hoping that they will continue to do this after today.

IMHO worrying about getting hit by lightning is ridiculous. Example: pick a tree at random. It's many times taller than you, is out in every single thunderstorm, and even so one in 10,000 will ever be hit. When's the last time your house was hit? Probably never. Most houses never are. Same logic; out in every storm, way taller than you, and heck, it has copper wiring up in the air to attract the lightning.

I just don't worry about it. Besides, I found out last year that heading out from under the awning at work while the smokers are under there watching the lightning and dime-sized hail coming down definitely cements your "crazy person" reputation. Just tip your head down enough that the visor protects your face; hail hitting lips is no fun.

I had a long and fast ride this morning. I'd planned to meet up with a group of legislators and staffers for the ride to the Capitol for Bike To Work Day. Unfortunately, I just missed them as they went over the Freeport Bridge. I continued down 160 towards the Delta for 5 miles or so. When it was getting close to 7:30, I realized that they were probably early and had already gone across the bridge, so I turned around and TT'd back up north to the bridge. Over into Yolo County and picked up a tailwind, so I was down in the drops and just flying. Never did catch the group but when I got to the Capitol, the BTW folks gave me a ClifBar and some water plus some goodies.

Fairly strong headwind while coming up the river into DC. I hope it'll be a tailwind this afternoon for the ride home.

The weather yesterday kept a lot of people home, so I had the trail to myself.

It was incredibly cold this morning. 43F, 16 mile one way. My toes are still cold and numb. Wore two jerseys (1 long, 1 short) and a fleece vest with tights, facemask and gloves. Must not have eaten enough dinner last night cause I think I came close to bonking. There is one road that is very difficult to cross. Made a right turn onto the road and spun out to the center turn lane. I got in the lane just as a guy in a F-150 coming the other direction decides to make a left turn as well. I slid out of the lane and let him by as he is gesturing wildly with both hands.

Today is ride to work day, but I didn't see anything about ride home from work day. I might just hitch a ride if it's still raining.

Good ride though. Third commute this week.

The commute was like normal winds from the east. Although there was one guy that kept honking at me when I got into traffic when I stopped at the intersections. Seems, he was in a hurry or did not know that bike have the right to use that part of the lane. I have found that since I have used this part of the lane, cars are not going by me so closely. I ride about 35- 40 miles round trip each day.

I haven't been able to ride since Monday, and Monday was just one-way. I was concerned that my body wouldn't like it. Turned out to be a great ride this morning. I broke the 19 mph avg speed, up from 14 mph when I started on 3/26. (Ascent 427 ft, descent 814 ft, 12.6 miles)

The beginning of my ride was cold also. It was the first morning ride that I've done without a jacket. The sun was out after a few miles though.

Had an appointment so was coming in about noon, got quite sweaty for the first time this year. The road works on McKnight have started, the mornings don't look so bad but the trip West looks too yucky for words. Will take the long way home and see how it goes. Need to get more miles in now, the spare tire shows no sign of disappearing. "What do mean, give up the beer??!!"

Today I get to explore new routes home - up to Tuxedo from Parkdale, then homeward to Heritage area.

First commute in a long time....normally I take my son (3rd grade) to school. He saw it was bike to work day, and wanted to bike to school also (close to work). He even got up early to do so. So we did the 5 miles one way. I had to really think about the route...my normal route is on roads more busy than I am comfortable with. So off we went, he on his BMX and me on my commuter. good trip avg spd of about 10 mph. We got to school earlier than we normally do and my son had bragging right.

So all in all a good day, and one that I think we will repeat at least a couple of times a week.

had a film shoot out in Concord so I rode out there for the job (about 18 miles) worked until about 10 pm and then headed home in the dark on quiet country roads. Nice to get a long day of work and a decent bike ride in on the same day. Misty on the way in this morning and the way home at night.

40F and overcast. Happy bike to work day! It was a fast commute this morning. I hope the guy who tried to reel me in will still have legs to ride home.

When I got here, some guy was outside smoking a cigarette and he said, "How was the trek in this morning?" Groan! I resisted the urge to go over and beat him with my bike (a Trek.)

I did my first commute ever today!!!

The distance is 9.6 miles, and it took me 38 minutes. It felt really good!
