Weather is getting pretty yucky out there. I think i'm going to leave my bike at work over the weekend. :p

caloso 03-07-08 01:00 PM

I rewrapped the bars of one of my bikes last week and never bothered to throw it away. It was just sitting on the work bench this morning when I had brainstorm to grab it and a roll of electrician's tape. When I arrived at the bike cage I did a quick wrap of the rack where the top and downtubes hit it. No more scratches!

The ride in was fine too. I saw half a dozen other cyclists on my short ride in. Nice.

monzter 03-07-08 01:09 PM

Nice morning commute today again :) Traffic wasn't too bad only took me about an extra 5 minutes due to a nasty head wind (by Miami standards, 20-22mph). Can't wait for the ride home and that tailwind, i hope :).

Flimflam 03-07-08 03:03 PM

Some apparent winter storm is just gearing up here, so it should be an interesting ride tonight and for this weekend - but my rides have been fine without any problems that I can remember. A few close calls, one where I wrongly got myself into a potential sandwich situation as a car was pulling into the curb, the others have already been forgotten.

Either way, lots of fun, despite a lingering head-type cold and crappy weather.

MIKEnDC 03-07-08 04:19 PM

Ugh. The ride home today was through a cold steady rain, and into a bit of wind. Ah well, at least it's Friday...

neilfein 03-07-08 05:34 PM

I did my first commute home from Union - my department moved to a different site. It's basically the old commute with a few extra miles. I plan to do this as a bike-to-the-train commute in the future, but 21 miles in the cold rain with my glasses fogging up made for a truly awesome ride.

Buglady 03-07-08 08:17 PM

OK, seriously, there needs to be a rule about headwinds BOTH WAYS.

Pinkrobe, don't take this personally, but I think I hate you a little bit today. You and your darn tailwind.

crazybikerchick 03-07-08 10:24 PM

Start of yet another winter snowstorm on the way home. Still fun, not yet slippery. Traffic moving cautiously however (generally at bike speed). I decide to use Adelaide (4 lane one-way arterial) rather than Queen (more cycle friendly but has streetcar tracks) - as I didn't want to get crowded between parked cars and the tracks in snow. So I figured I could have my own lane. But despite two taillights and a reflective vest people seem to not want to change lanes to pass. SIGH. Tried to stare them down if I spotted them not moving over in my mirror with my helmet light.

I think people just think cyclist in snowstorm = crazy idiot. At one light a pedestrian starts talking to me "hi how are you" - it seemed to be must confirm this is a human type question. I'm like Great, how are you? And he mentions to have a safe ride.

knatchwa 03-08-08 01:04 AM

I hate to admit it but for once I did not ride all day. Bad choice :) Otherwise.

Bdaisies 03-09-08 03:38 PM

I rode my bike in to work on Friday, when it wasn't so bad in the morning. By late afternoon, it was coming down like mad. Co-workers offered to drive me home... had I known that they drove a Hummer I would have just walked my bike back home. I just left it locked up in rack in my building's parking garage, and now I'm a little worried about her.

I was holed up all of yesterday because of the storm. I hope the weather is nice tomorrow and the snow keeps melting. I can bring my bike back home. :)

MIKEnDC 03-10-08 04:54 AM

28F and pretty calm this morning. Winter is loosening its grip, but only gradually.

Hmm, I guess folks over in the Ohio valley and up through the Lakes don't need to hear about winter from me--sorry about that.

tarwheel 03-10-08 05:58 AM

Back in the dark again for the morning commute with the start of daylight savings time.. Charged up all my batteries last night so I would have a fresh supply for the week. It was still nearly dark by the time I got to work, but I should see some nice sunrises before long.

We're in the weather pattern now in NC with chilly mornings (high 20s, low 30sF) but warm afternoons (60sF), which makes dressing a challenge. My jackets that are warm enough for morning are too warm in the afternoons. I'm getting by wearing a warmer base layer T-shirt in the morning and bringing an extra thin, light base in my seatbag for the afternoons. Also carrying some lighter gloves for afternoons. Some days my seatbag is more full in the afternoon from all the gear I've shed from morning.

All you guys commuting in the snow and ice, I'm not complaining! We got it easy down South compared to you.

Itsjustb 03-10-08 06:57 AM

I face the same clothing challenges as tarwheel. My solution is to wear two Under Armor shirts layered. The first one is a thin "original" UA shirt; the second one is their "Cold Gear" version. Then I put my high-viz jersey over them. It was perfect for me this morning and in the afternoon I can wear either one of the UA jerseys depending on the exact temp.

Generally a great commute this morning, though I did have a few close passes, two people pass me on the right by using a right-turn-only lane, and several drivers gun their engines next to me. But all of that was wiped away by the sight of 6 deer crossing one of the roads on campus just as I arrived. :)

DCvision 03-10-08 08:27 AM

beautiful commute.. first time in the dark, will need to upgrade lighting setup. I haven't commuted in a week so legs felt fresh and first half was a quick pace... but faded second half :(
70d and breezy..

brainsan 03-10-08 09:41 AM

First commute with my bike locked outside of the building. It will be a big test of my luck, my weekend duct tape, inner tube, spray paint, proxy with ball bearing job, the 10 pound Fahgettaboudit chain and the NYC bike thieves. The girl friend moved. No more indoor bike parking. Let's hope for the best.

HardyWeinberg 03-10-08 10:12 AM

Nice and damp, and I feel all virtuous getting in at 7am, according to bike pc anyway.

Trail-a-biked 1st grader to school rather than just rode next to him on his own bike 'cause I need to pick him up early to bring him to dentist.

caloso 03-10-08 10:25 AM

I'm almost embarrassed to report how gorgeous the weather is here in NorCal. But it is. There. I said it: the weather is gorgeous. Cool and clear, with a light mist rising off the American River like the breath of angels.

The ride was nice too.

habernac 03-10-08 11:02 AM

our weather here in western Canada rules as well. I'm having a good laugh, I always get emails from a friend of mine touting the awesome sourthern Ontario weather. You can keep the wet, nasty snow and the smog and humidity you get in the summer thank you very much. I'll keep the dry climate we have here, even if I have to put up with a little bit of cold in the winters.

Amazing morning, +6 or 7, little or no wind. I really need to fix my commuter, though, the full suspension rig sucks for riding on pavement.

ncherry 03-10-08 05:23 PM

I did my first commute of the year (19 miles, one way). I had a little trouble handling my Truk (Trek 1100 with a BOB trailer). I forgot that when you go fast that the front end becomes a little light and had a little trouble keeping it straight on the down hill. I ran out of Gatorade on the way home. Drank 3L (40% diluted mix) for the entire ride, good thing I had my water bottle as my lips were dry. The ride home was a bit of a cold wind but it was a ride and I'll sleep well tonight.

icemanbb 03-10-08 05:44 PM

Uneventful ride in this morning (25°F) but when I got ready to return home I discovered that I had a flat on the front. Changed tubes, from the comfort of indoors, and had an uneventful ride home (35°F). I've got a short commute ~8.5 miles RT.

do you lock up the trail a bike at his school or do you just keep it attached when you drop him off?

neilfein 03-10-08 09:23 PM

First commute into the new site, and It took longer than I thought it would.

I not only missed my train (it pulled up while I was locking up my bike),
but the next one would have been in an hour. Add another half-hour for the ride, and ten minutes to walk to work, and it made sense to just ride all the way to work. It ended up being a 24-mile morning.

On the way back, I didn't have my cue sheet for the ride-all-the-way-home ride, and ended up in Scotch Plains -- many hills and twisty roads. Heading due south doesn't really work there.

I ended up riding 44 miles for the day, turning a commute that should have been three hours round-trip into 7. Some great riding, but I think I need to trim it down a little.

ban guzzi 03-10-08 11:53 PM

Funny....similar Way Outta Bounds commute myself. Left home about two and a half hours before nightshift began. Got to work with about one and a half minutes to spare! Not sure of milage but a good guess is my usual 10 miles stretched out to about 35 and alot of hills.

Thighs burn a bit but otherwise okay.

Lets see if I feel the same way at 6am when I'm heading home after 12 hours and first night back...

knatchwa 03-11-08 03:56 AM

I made it up to myself and got in a nice long ride today, weather spectacular besides that exciting headwind on the trip back to my door.

evblazer 03-11-08 05:58 AM

It was nearly zero visibility with the really dense fog for about 3/4th of my commute. It was a great test for my new giro's first commute. Since I couldn't really see all that well I probably hit more road debris/cracks/potholes then usual and it stood up fine (laid down fine? :D) and is all still in one piece. I need to definately get bar mirrors though. The take a look is fine but it fogs up really easily as does my glasses so it was a little uneasy for a while.

Lot of vehicles following me even though I was in the right wheel path in the right land of 4 and 6 lane roads. When I finally got to work I was in a foggy section again. It was pretty weird hearing the highway but not being able to see any headlights or taillights even through I was only 50ft away.

RB1-luvr 03-11-08 06:23 AM

my 1.7er this morning was nice. crisp and cool. going to be a nice sunny day in the mid 40s.

bikeCarrot 03-11-08 06:37 AM

First commute to work this morning after a few months off. It always feels so good to get a ride in before work.

A good morning for riding, temps in the high 30s, not much wind :D Now if only work would go by quickly so I can get back on the bike....

Itsjustb 03-11-08 06:49 AM

Conflicted commute this morning. On the one hand I made great time--I think I averaged ~20 mph for the ride; it certainly felt like I was flying today. On the other hand I had two confrontations with drivers.

The first was a lady who wouldn't let me cross the lane to get in the left-turn lane. Of course all this gained her was she got to the red light about a second before me. :(

The second was with a lady who passed me on the campus road. The speed limit on the road is 20 mph; I was doing 25 on a downhill with a sharp curve when she passed me doing about 30 or 35. She barely kept her car on the road--she was completely in the other lane, I heard the tires squealing, and she barely missed the curb on the outside of the other lane. And once again it didn't gain her much. She arrived at the parking deck about 3 seconds before me.

tarwheel 03-11-08 07:16 AM

I wavered on whether to bike commute today because I have some errands to run downtown. Need some new eyeglasses -- fast -- and my optician is located another 8-10 miles past my office. That would make my commute about 40 miles for the day, and probably means I would need to take the afternoon off. However, it's supposed to be a beautiful sunny, warm day with a high in the mid-60sF.

So ... I decided to ride. Should be a fun afternoon. I'll leave work around noon, ride downtown, eat lunch, pick out some new glass frames, and then ride 20 miles or so home. The perfect solution to spring fever.

jyossarian 03-11-08 07:27 AM

"Why is he staring at me like that?" is probably what went through the mind of the clueless taxi passenger that opened her door in front of me. I stopped in time, but glared at her in the way I usually reserve for looking at incredibly stupid things.

Also saw a motorcycle rider forced out of his lane by a livery cab that just decided to change lanes w/o looking or signaling. The rider let loose the bird, and zoomed off. Be careful out there.
