A wonderful spring preview today. Feels awesome to dress light, not have to wear full finger gloves. Tailwind.

It's that magical time when the weather gives us semi-occasional nice warm days, yet the fair weather commuters aren't out clogging the streets just yet :-)

knatchwa 03-04-08 02:22 AM

Went for a brief ride today, been working on so many things figured I would take a break from it all. The weather was great though the wind did come up later. Took the time out to go for a ride and enjoy a picnic, the season has certainly changed.

MIKEnDC 03-04-08 05:28 AM

WOW! All I can say is, wow.

~60F with just enough wind to give an occasional nudge, and my earlier start time (self-imposed DST a little ahead of schedule, I guess) means almost zero traffic. My ride was non-stop, except for about 10-15 seconds at a light, and it felt like I was riding through a dream...

I'll take it! Where do I sign? :D

Excellent commute in today, best one yet :) Only my 2nd day LOL. But seriously, tried a different route today and had about 4 miles of my 6.5mi commute where I wasn't overtaken by any cars. Backroads were empty. Did the 6.5mi commute in under 30min, which is right on par with how long it takes in the car.

Left about 20 minutes earlier than last time and it made a nice difference in the traffic level on the roads where it was busiest.

pastafagioli 03-04-08 07:45 AM

I rode my 29 miles of my commute into a 15-20 mph headwind. It definitely tested my will power and determination to forge ahead. My mph dropped about 2 mph. On a positive note, the weather was quite comfortable, low 40's here in central Long Island. Looking forward to the warmer days in the up coming weeks. :)

DCvision 03-04-08 07:49 AM

argh...got a flat!... Luckily, it was only about 1 block from the people mover, so I was still able to get to work on time. :)

A piece of glass had punctured the tire and the tube, so was a quick fix. It pays to be prepared...

jterribili 03-04-08 08:54 AM

most excellent commute this morning - 60, light wind, beautiful sky. Nice not to wear my warmer gear too! Hopefully I will miss the thunderstorms predicted for this afternoon

Tyrell 03-04-08 10:14 AM

Having just started bike commuting, I'm still learning which clothes to wear in which temps. It was 35 when I left my house this morning. I was wearing bike shorts with wind pants, an under armor cold gear top with a wind jacket on top of that, a windproof beanie and windproof fleece gloves. I got about half-way to work and I was hot! Probably should have used a bandana instead of the beanie, tights instead of the wind pants, and traded the wind jacket for another long-sleeved shirt on top of the UA. Learning curves are fun!

pinkrobe 03-04-08 11:58 AM

We got a little bit of snow last nigt, so no reason to run studs. Fine ride in, a little windy, no drama except for when my wife blew past me through a red light.

SDBluefish 03-04-08 01:23 PM

Beautiful day! Winds died down from yesterday and warming up nicely. Got a late start so had to take the bus about halfway. But am looking forward to the ride home!

HardyWeinberg 03-04-08 01:54 PM

*brutal* headwind going home last night. Humongo gusts. When I got to pick up my 6 yr old, he and his pals were on top of a hill leaning into it to try and see if it would hold them up.

This morning, circuitous, trailered 3 yr old to dentist and then her school, then finally into work. Nice and sunny, mild(ish), today.

caloso 03-04-08 02:13 PM

Awesome. First day back on the bike in a few days.

neilfein 03-04-08 07:15 PM

Great ride in, the first warm day in a while.

vrkelley 03-04-08 10:15 PM

Great ride in Seattle. Sunny but still in the low 40Fs

trombone 03-05-08 12:17 AM

Nice ride in for me. Sunny and warm. Had a chat with another commuter about my single speed. He was interested in what gear I ran it at. Always nice to exchange pleasantries with other commuters in the morning.

knatchwa 03-05-08 01:55 AM

Beautiful weather, and a good ride. Not to much wind just a smooth flow.

MIKEnDC 03-05-08 06:34 AM

Cooler than yesterday and a bit rainy. Missed most of it during the ride--got wetter walking around the building.

With the spring raininess coming (hopefully), I am officially in the market for some top notch rain gear. I actually have several good shells, but none are of the high-viz, cycle-specific variety.

Oh yes. Standing between the outer and inner double glass doors waiting to get in, a perplexed looking guy asked, "Did you ride a bicycle in today?" I, in my black tights, screaming yellow cycling jacket, and with helmet in hand, replied, "Yes, all winter in fact." This did not clear up his perplexity.

tarwheel 03-05-08 07:50 AM

The weather forecast yesterday called for severe thunderstorms and high winds, so I drove. The forecast was right but their timing was off, and the storms didn't hit until last night. So I missed riding on a 70F-degree day, although it was very windy.

Back in the saddle this morning, and it was still warm -- about 50F during my commute. It was still windy, like it's been here for the past two weeks, although usually the mornings are calm. Hopefully I'll get a nice SW tailwind on the way home. Enjoying the morning light while it lasts. My morning commute will go back to total darkness next week when daylight savings time starts again.

Tyrell 03-05-08 09:23 AM

42F when I left the house this morning. I learned my lesson from yesterday regarding clothing so I wore bike shorts, UA long-sleeved shirt and a short-sleeved jersey. Couldn't find my bandana. Overall a great ride in except I need to get some full-finger gloves pronto!

jyossarian 03-05-08 09:36 AM

Cool and slightly drizzly morning = skidding down Lexington Ave. (in a good way). Streets were just wet enough to make fg skids easy so I took the opportunity to skid to a stop whenever I needed to. I should think about rotating my tires.

jterribili 03-05-08 10:08 AM

good commute - 50 when I left. Missed all the rain yesterday, but the wind was rough. Glad the storm held off til I got home.

white_feather 03-05-08 10:29 AM

Rode home last night. The weather was horrible for everyone, except me. I was on a bicycle. Weather is never bad when you are riding. The sleet pellets felt like I was being shot by a machine gun shooting bb's. Hurt like hell but I love riding.

SDBluefish 03-05-08 10:32 AM

Nice cloudy morning. 60F. Saw egrets and herons in the lagoon. Pretty ride sweetened further by an email from a colleague in Montreal, where it's pelting down freezing rain and ice.

OK maybe just a little smug....

pinkrobe 03-05-08 10:44 AM

Bright sun, moderate traffic, and my wife took off about halfway to go to the dentist. I got all sprinty after that... :)

caloso 03-05-08 10:56 AM

Last night, I was buzzed uncomfortably close in the bike lane. The side mirror didn't actually touch me but I swear I could feel the breeze on my jersey sleeve. I caught up to him at the next light, made eye contact and held my hands about 6 inches apart. He rolled down his window. I said "Hey, do me a favor: next time make it 3 feet."

He said (of course): "I'm sorry, I didn't see you." And the light changed and he went on his merry way.

After I got home, I realized Hey! He was in the bike lane. WTF kind of excuse is that? He shouldn't have been in the bike lane at all. ****, I was pissed then.

DataJunkie 03-05-08 11:17 AM

23F this morning with lightly snowing. I was able to easily maintain 15mph on my mountain bike. It was fun but I still want spring back. One day spring. The next winter. bleh!

OT: Is this related to the tooth she left behind on your commute the other day?

On topic: I rode yesterday but left early in the afternoon to avoid the storms tarwheel mentioned. Commute today was uneventful, but WINDY. Man, I'll be glad when spring gets more serious and the wind stops.

I feel a BS cough coming on. At least he appologized.

My ride was nice. 30°F and 3-4" of snow. Took the back road to avoid traffic. It was kind of sloppy downtown though.

HardyWeinberg 03-05-08 02:05 PM

kind of a rush rush out the door this morning, wound up taking 6 yr old to school on trail-a-bike since I didn't have time to wait for him to pedal at his own pace (~3mph) on his 16" bike, got back and said something about boy it's cold out, my wife said it was probably because it was 30F and I was biking w/ no jacket, shorts, and sandals. That may have had something to do with it.

trombone 03-05-08 03:02 PM

The traffic report on the radio before I left said Sydney was a nightmare this morning. Consequently the traffic in the city was very quiet (traffic jams on the arterials leading into the city = less cars actually in the city!). Made the ride quite pleasant. And the weather has improved a lot over the last few days too - it's been very pleasant, with sunshine and temperatires in the high teens.

Just one idiot taxi driver buzzing past me on a single lane road.
