I'd like to share my commute through pictures. This is how my commute looks on the way home from work. I would take pictures going the other way, but usually I'm in too much of a rush to get to work to stop and lollygaggle.

Nice pics. I really appreciate the one about the hill. The last .65 miles of my 12.75 mile commute is an intense winding one lane super-hill, with tons of cars, and 5 different bus lines utilizing it. It's never fun; unfortunately there is no way around it at the moment - at least until they reopen the Henry Hudson River bridge in 2010...

Excellent commute. Nothing exciting. Beautiful Morning. A little warm on the way home in the afternoon, but I made it home in good time despite that.

Oh I feel your pain with the hill. I've tried all sorts of routes to get around this hill, but they all lead to more or less the same type of hill.

When I lived in ELAY I commuted from Sylmar to Burbank. Glenoaks Blvd almost all the way, 13 miles, almost all downhill. Going home was rough, but there was a shower on the other end.

Ride in was great and fast. The weather was really nice, so I took the fast road bike. Got a compliment on my condition and riding ability from a fellow commuter - good ego boost.

The way home was good until I got stung by a bee on my left calf two miles from home. I almost pulled over and called the wife to come get me as it was amazingly painful to pedal. However, I made it home. An icepack and two Benadryls later, it's not feeling so bad.

Had a pleasant commute today. It was cool in the morning dark as I rode in to work. Going home, was hot but I had a nice breeze. My Diamondback MTB is at the shop and I really don't want to ride my Edgewood hybrid (she's still too new), so I took my beater bike. An old Roadmaster citybike I bought at a garage sale for $20. I now remember why I keep it around. She's a solid ride. Steel frame, so she's heavy and not fast but she'll get you to where you need to go...and I don't worry about her getting stolen 'cause she's my beater bike (please take her!, I don't have the heart to git rid of her). I offered her up for a good cause as a ghostbike but the admin in charge of the ghostbike program never got back with me nor called. Once I get my MTB back, all will be right with the world again and I'll store her away again.

my commute today was full of the unexpected. humid, hot morning, starting out on the bus at 7:30, 15 minutes to Northampton from Holyoke, MA. i was thinking about getting off the bus a little sooner than usual and enjoying a little more of the morning on the bike. "naw," says i to myself. "yer knees been botherin ya. just take it easy."

well wouldn't you know it, but right at the point where i had been thinking of getting out early there was a detour due to some construction in the road. a long detour. i took that as a sign that i was meant to get the extra mileage after all. (hey-- i should probably read my horrorscope!) turns out they were replacing a railroad crossing, but i managed to get around it through grass and someone's driveway. i was wishing i had a CX right about then. the rest of the ride was pretty uneventful, save for the stopping and the sweating of buckets that had to be done before the final push up the hill right before the office.

the way home actually felt cooler. now, normally i would ride the 7 mi to northampton, catch the bus, throw the bike on the rack (there's space for 2) and have a nice restful 20 minute ride home. as it happens there was one other fella there before me waiting for the bus with HIS bike, and the bus had one on the rack, so i was S.O.L. but i decided that rather than wait the hour for the next bus i would ride the extra 6, maybe 7 miles home but try to take it easy. its all uphill from Noho to Holyoke, which is one of the reasons i take the bus in the first place. it turns out that my bike and i handled it pretty well. there's one 1.5, maybe 2 mile stretch near the end that is rather steeper than the rest, so that kinda kills. but all in all my commute today was the most fun i have had in quite awhile. so total mileage of about 13 miles, i think.

The ride home was sunny, which reminds me that my sunglasses and my sunscreen were in the pannier that I lost. I'll get more at Target tomorrow. Other than that, I declared today "Unofficial Single Speed Day" by just not shifting gears. My legs are sore, in the good way.

The routine this week is a bit different for me. My wife's work had a fire at the office, so she's working in Union this week while they clean the office out, and her office is near my work. This means I carpool in with her and ride my folder to her office at the end of the day, 4.5 miles up a gentle uphill.

I was just moping along at 15 or 16MPH and saw something dark in my mirror. Turned to look behind me, and someone was reeling me in. He picked a bad day. I was feeling energetic and testosterone-laden, so I dialed my guads up to 400W and pushed the poor Liquid to 20MPH. Stayed there for the next 5 miles except when slowing for the occasional trail user and stop sign. I caught glimpses of my attacker but by the time I left the MUP I hadn't seen him in a mile or so.

Other than that, a perfectly normal commute. :rolleyes: 60F, no wind. Sunny.

normal commute this morning, although a bit humid. caught up to two guys commuting together, but I made my normal route turn just before I reached them - on second thought, I should have just modified my route so I could chat a bit - seems rare I encounter anyone, but it is getting more frequent as of late.

it was not fun. I was driving. To NY (White Plains) to interview someone for my company. left the house at 5:10am and just got here about 1/2 hour ago. interview is at 10am. There was supposed to be 2 or 3 interviews, but only one lined up, so the trip was kinda a waste, but this guy has the most promise, so we will see. I am hoping to get back home to MA in time to go for a ride tonight.

Woke up late this morning. Seriously considered bumming a ride. Instead I got my tired ass through a quick shower and managed to make it to work on time.

Legs were a bit fatigued this morning. Headwind didn't Help.

Left at a little after 3am to get to work and get stuff done before 7. Wow were the roads ever quiet.
My n4zou inspired light worked great and has a nice wide beam lighting up the whole road and side of the road. I even cut in half an old P3 heat sink to help cool down the dual LEDS. So far almost 100 miles and it is still in one piece, which is amazing given my tinkering skills.

Hey 77midget, I used to live in Yonkers and once biked to my college in Harrison North of White Plains. On my way home my seat broke and my Mom had to come rescue me. Glad you made it on the roadways OK - see you when you get back.

My bike commute in this morning was OK - but I got a flat. The tube had a pin hole right at the seem. Glad I had put NEW tubes 2 days ago. Yeesh. What happened to quality control. Fortuntely and quite luckily it happened near a remote gas station on 117, so after I put the OLD tube back in, I was able to pump it up to full pressure. I carry a pump of course and a patch kit but replacing the tube and using an electric pump was no nice. I guess I used about 15 minutes. I was still 40 minutes early to work after my 17 mile ride, giving me enough time to wash-up, and change. I just patched the old tube - so that's ready for next time.

Anybody travel with 2 tubes?

2 tubes, glue and glueless patch kit as well as a spare tire. When the bead seperated wide and long from my tire 15 miles from work a boot could have got me limping home but with a new tire I was off to work like nothing happened. Heck I even have a spare 700c and 20" tube (my wifes bikes) that I pretty much leave on my bike.

Commute in felt slow this morning. Actually was a bit faster than yesterday, but didn't feel as fast. Wierd.

Finally resolved the clipping in problem I was having yesterday by touching up the rear clip on the new pedals so that it matched the "ramp" on the rear of my SPD cleats (with which they are supposed to be compatible). As it was, the rear clip made contact just ahead of the ramp on the cleat. Filing a slight round-over on the edge solved it.

outstanding, glad to be here. Came about 5 foot from a cop car going about 100 mph. Glad he seen me and I seen him.

I have two headlights and one is strobe. Really it was not that scary, there were two cars coming toward me on a four lane (2 each way) city street. Due to bumps and stuff I take the inside of the slow lane. He was just flying up behind the two cars coming toward me, crossed the double yellow and flew by those two cars. I seen him in plenty of time to ditch on the sidewalk, but he seen me and stayed over. Not as bad as it sounds, but it coulda been.

I got maybe 3 hours of sleep last night. I am tired. The commute didn't suffer at all, which was nice.

i commuted computerless. No speed, no time no distance... omg that's boring i need my data! I left my computer in my back pocket and ran it through the wash which apparently is bad for them.

Totaly awsome. First, I met a couple on the trolley who were vacationing from England, and had ridden thier tandem all the way from Vancouver B.C. Then on the way to the store where I buy my lunch on the way in I passed six other bike commuters - the most I have seen yet. Three were comming the opposite direction on the other side, the other three were comming the opposit direction on my side. Wasn't bad for me as those last three were all on the sidewalk %^(.

When I got to the grocery, there were already three bikes chained up outside.

Last night's commute home got off to a bad start. First, I noticed that one of the bolts holding my toe clips was missing (when did that happen?); then, less then ten minutes into my ride, I roll over some railroad tracks and I hear something fall off and hit the ground. Turns out it was my rear blinkie; the mount broke off due to metal fatigue. Managed to retrieve the light, stuffed it into my pannier, and rode the rest of the way home without further problems. Now I have scrounge up a bolt, washer and nut for my toe clip and "borrow" the reflector clamp from my wife's bike. *sigh*

Great! The for as hot as it has been getting in the afternoons the mornings are beautiful. I wasnt nearly as worried going through the gnarly roundabout we have buy work either.

Geez! The Traffic!

Last night at one point I had more the dozen riders in view, this was on a stretch of pathway where I could see maybe a 100 yards.

Then this morning, came round a corner to find a guy weaving across into my lane,
"What are you doing? Oh!" Behind him an attractive young lady was walking up the path, heavily tanned, belly button ring, stiletto heels,.... and a Bikini!

This is on an overcast morning, little chilly, by the river, in the industrial area. After a few blinks and a WTF under my breath, noticed the guys standing by the cars parked the other side of the pathway barrier, and all the professional photo equipment. Aha! There is some new bank work around there, with picturesque rocks that make a nice view, if you don't zoom out and show the surroundings! :rolleyes: Don't see that everyday.
