Ahh, the ride to work! I live on the outskirts of Taichung, a city in Taiwan, which is home to the most polluting coal fired power plant in the entire world! (YES! We are number 1!) I ride from a relatively pristine mountain valley along a river and into the city. Little oil slicks can progressively be seen upon the surface, shining their rainbow colors in the sun. The last ten minutes of my ride to work (in total a forty minute ride) are spent with my face mask on as I pass three gravel crushing concrete factories and fight against large diesel trucks with exhaust pipes that bellow smoke out the side. I guess the fumes keep me warm on cooler days, though. That sums up my commute to work. Bliss!

First commute to work in over two months and everything was great...

The temperature was close to 50 F, the Twenty was purring like a kitten, and although it rained it stopped shortly I had to come home.

knatchwa 04-03-08 10:34 PM

beautiful weather and clear what a great day to ride.

chrism32205 04-04-08 05:19 AM

First commute to work this year.. the weather was high 60's this morning.. a nice 6 mile ride into downtown Jacksonville Florida

girljen 04-04-08 06:16 AM

The ride to work was uneventful. It was chilly and there were headwinds.

On the way home, though, I hit a milestone: I bonked for the very first time. It was NOT cool. I spent the last half of the ride spinning in my lowest gear, going so slow I could hardly stay in a straight line, feeling weak and shaky, and generally hating life. When I got home, I inhaled a bowl of green chili and two bowls of cheerios.

Working all night was painful but the ride home was terrible. For once I actually regretted riding to work...of course the bigger regret was actually showing up. I'm not looking forward to getting in the car to go get my bloodwork done. I am happy that I was able to schedule my ultrasounds for next Thursday instead of the following week. Something has to give here...

wet ride home last night at 11pm - it was just sprinkling when I walked out the door, but then 5 mins into the ride, it started coming down steady - of course! Dried everything out last night as best I could (shoes were still wet this morning) and rode in again even though rain is predicted. Felt good to do that. Normally, I don't ride in the rain during the colder months, but now that it's a little warmer out I will be.

I think this year I may get over myself and just ride in the rain all year long. Although I should probably stop procrastinating and get the fenders on my bike like I keep saying I will do! And another pair of shoes

Have a great weekend everyone!

My ride home yesterday was my first commute leg completely in the rain.
It wasn't much of a rain - a steady light shower - but it was enough that I wore my water-resistant workout suit pants and windbreaker. Added leather gloves, and nothing special under my helmet - I couldn't find my wool hat.

Turns out that, in the 50-ish or lower temps, that was perfect! Just a little cool, and with the cool rain on my head, I stayed just a little cool the whole ride. Didn't stink when I got home. Took it easy (careful, but not timid) the whole way. Only problem was a little trouble seeing through the raindrop-covered glasses.

I might still be cautious about riding to work in morning rains, but this was pretty pleasant, and of course, I had the whole MUP to myself!

I had to drive yesterday, so missed that rain, but rode to work in more rain this morning. It was just a light mist but the roads were very wet from showers during the night. Fortunately I had installed my RaceBlade fenders and that kept me 95% dry. It has rained 4 out of 5 days this week, but I've cycled every day but one. Not bad for someone who hates riding in the rain.

A cold front is supposed to move through our area sometime later today, with possible thunderstorms. I'm hoping it will hold off until tonight so I don't get soaked again on my way home this afternoon. I've had enough of that for the week. At least the rain has cleared out the pollen, for now.

johnnyburst79 04-04-08 07:43 AM

The ride in was great. About 2 minutes after I left, the deluge started and I was wearing a t shirt and gym shorts. I was, and am, soaked to the bone. With the warm(er) temps in the high 60's, it is great. :D

Yay! Friday is here!
Rain falls, cars speed, peds unaware
And I'm missing it

pinkrobe 04-04-08 08:08 AM

I am so glad it's Friday. I need to sleep in so badly...

Um, the ride in was fine - traffic was light and there was no weirdness. Phew!

+1 - I need the sleep in badly with doing 122k yesterday and getting 12 hours sleep in the past two days and staying out late and riding home late meaning having dinner at 12:30am :p Not good, but not something I'd do everyday - I could've bailed earlier and took a train but riding was more fun :)

Rain today, got wet on the bottom half, so I'm hanging stuff over a radiator. Starving today too, so I'll probably have to eat a huge lunch.

Looking forward to a relaxing calm weekend with my daughter :)

HardyWeinberg 04-04-08 10:19 AM

~20F warmer than last couple days, but heavy drizzle.

jpdesjar 04-04-08 10:29 AM

no riding for me today, kind of cold and rainy here and i already rode in the rain once this week...decided to take the auto and i ran on the treadmill at work...feeling good now, got the sweat out

trying to keep the balance between running and biking during the week...also throwing some swimming in there too when the pool isnt totally crowded

i did take a different route on my way home so i could get a few extra miles in because i knew i wouldnt be riding today...felt good

caldini 04-04-08 04:25 PM

Beautiful weather with hardly any wind. Just the right temperature. Marred by my third puncture this week. Had to fill up with air four times on the ride home.

crhilton 04-04-08 04:47 PM

Some ****** in a bmw kept honking at me. Apparently I wasn't far enough to the right for him? So I moved to the middle of the lane.

Bad Human 04-04-08 05:16 PM

26 degrees and icy roads in the morning, sunshine and 65 degrees on the way home.... such is spring

Great going into work today. 60F and nice clean roads and paths. Even had a few cagers follow behind me to the intersections to make right turns instead of speeding ahead and cutting in front. Hopefully the ride home in the dark (10PM) will be just as good.

urban rider 04-05-08 02:06 AM

While riding home this evening some guys in a car yelled out the "N" word and threw a can at me. If I wasn't so tired after an evening with co-workers I would have rode after them. So many stupid people in the world.

Gas, .69 cents the price of a can of beans

TheNessaHeart 04-05-08 12:57 PM

I agree full heartedly with you on the ignorance of people in the world.

Two days ago, biking home from class I was making a right turn and a huge SUV was halfway in the bike lane, I could have touched the side mirror so I over corrected, my foot hit the spokes of my wheel I front flipped over my bike and crashed in the middle of the road. Not one car, including the SUV, stopped or slowed down to see if I was alright. It saddens me that people view others as obstacles and not as human beings.

2wheelsonly 04-05-08 05:54 PM

Took a different route to work yesterday to see if there may be a wider, safer road to get there. While most of the roads had more room, there was also more traffic on them. Then I had a wild hair up my ass to look for a paved bike trail so I ended up taking an extra 45 minutes getting to work trying to find it and finally getting on it. Overall, the ride was okay but my pace was not the greatest.

Also took a different route home to challenge myself to take on more hills despite not feeling 100% before leaving. I got worked and actually took one unplanned stop for a couple minutes just to recoup. Pace was also not the best on this ride back but I made it home safe so it's all good.

girljen 04-05-08 07:46 PM

The ride in last night was awesome. It was finally t-shirt weather!! I had one of those "I can't believe I'm actually allowed to do this, it's so much fun that it should be prohibited" moments.

The ride home this morning started out LAME. I ride home in the dark, so the greenbelt is closed. I ride home on the dark, boring street. I have a choice of routes, though. I can either take easy, flat, uncrowded Carr St., or I can take Garrison St., which is busier and has a hill. This morning, I finally decided that it would be worth it to ride up the big hill on Garrison...so that I could then ride *down* the big hill on Garrison. WHEEEE!!! It's not a route I'd take every day, but that hill is fun.

W00t! First commute since February. :o Temps in the low 30Fs. The trail is mostly clear, but I had to walk the bike in a couple of places because it was frozen in ruts and ice and snow from edge to edge. For the ride home, I'm going to skirt around those sections of the trail using some streets and some short single tracks in the woods.

Need to get the legs back in form. I felt slow.

ModoVincere 04-07-08 06:29 AM

Holy Mackerel.
1st commute in about 6 mos due to various factors beyond my control (other than quitting the job, and then there'd be nowhere to commute to). Little cool, but actually quite comfortable once I got going. Didn't even push hard and I set a new record of 28 minutes. I guess all that time on the trainer over the winter has paid off.

jpdesjar 04-07-08 07:50 AM

great ride this morning, sun was shining and it was about 40 when i left the house

legs felt a little tired from skating the day before and i didnt eat before i jumped on the bike but i had a great ride

practiced trackstands in the living room over the weekend and i can hold them for about 30 seconds or so, not too shabby

looks like it is going to be a decent week for riding:)

pinkrobe 04-07-08 09:08 AM

'Twas a pretty smooth ride in today. The only problem I had was when a woman driving a white Chrysler 300m decided to occupy the same space as me. She pulled left into my lane without looking, and I had to do a fast drift into the next lane and hug the dotted line. I was completely flabbergasted. There I was, sitting in the middle of the lane, and oh, pardon me, I'm taking your space. Nice. Anyway, I made my light and didn't die. I obviously need to be more aggressive when I take the lane, perhaps laying down some caltrops or lighting things on fire.

jterribili 04-07-08 09:41 AM

no commute in today - a little sore from falling from a tree on Friday evening. Was trying to get a foam rocket that my son shot into the air and got stuck in the tree, when the branch I was on decided it didn't like me and tried to commit murder. my feet were about 8 feet off the ground - fell straight down and landed standing up. Other than a few nasty scrapes on my chest/arms and a very sore left ankle, I am fine. The ankle was still questionable this morning, so I took the day off.

johnnyburst79 04-07-08 09:48 AM

I stayed at the girls house last night so the commute was increased from 1 mile to 10 miles. I left at 6:50am and got to my place 30 minutes later. :D I was pushing it hard but I'm glad I did it in such a short amount of time.

Almost got into an accident with an F150...he thought he could speed past me and make a sharp right turn to follow his buddy (i was in between the two). I swear, I'm about to just keep going and sue the **** out of the next person who hits me. I've been broadsided twice, run off a road, and cut off by a guy stopping so quickly I went through his back window, and all since late January. I do call the police, but I should also be calling a lawyer. I'll be talking to one shortly.

caloso 04-07-08 09:54 AM

39F and calm. No incidents to report. It's as good as it gets on a Monday morning.
