The ride in was awesome. I decided that I Are Serious Commuter and This Is Serious Training, so I added an extra mile and a big hill to my commute. WHEEEEE!! I love that hill. Why have I spent so long avoiding it? I get a sense of accomplishment, and a really fast downhill! What's not to love?
The ride back...well, I had just cussed out my boss, so I had plenty of energy to burn. I was spinning (not hammering) on the big chain ring, uphill. I was @#$%ed off, dammit, and I had energy to burn! I was going fast! And then...an X-mart MTB dropped me like a bad habit. Heh. Silly me. |
One of my best rides was a few years ago in winter after an account manager managed to completely aggravate me. I was completely out of shape and rode my hybrid 30 miles from work to home in the snow. Anger is a great motivator.
I have also had negative motorist interactions that fueled speedy rides. |
54F/12C and a light steady rain. The Springtime mantra: shorts and rain jacket (along with lots of cold puddles :D ).
Made the memories of yesterday afternoon's nice, sunny, 68F with sweet helpful tailwind ride fade a bit... |
I had a close call this morning. My rear tire had developed a pronounced wump-wump-wump yesterday, and today it blew out about 15 seconds AFTER I arrived at work, after riding through moderate NYC traffic.
It was a kevlar belted Primo Comet, 85 psi, with a little less than 500 miles on it; I only put it on the bike in March! |
Warmer'n yesterday, but not by much. Upper 40sF. I was coming out of a dirt trail I wanted to look at, and a guy on a 'bent rode by, going my way. We exchanged greetings and I followed him. He was booking along pretty well. 20MPH or so for a while. Hard for me to push the knobbies that fast. He slowed down after a mile or two so it was easier for me. :p
Yesterday I rode home as fast as I could and just beat the rain. Had a screaming tailwind off Lake Champlain. Fun ride. |
18 miles in light rain this morning. A pickup pulled out in front of me in a neighborhood and I barely got stopped in time thanks to wet brakes. The driver stopped after blocking my path and just looked at me without expression. :notamused:
Despite the rain and bonehead driver, I still enjoyed my ride. Bicycle commuting rocks! |
little chilly here in central CT. had to wear a wind stop jacket, light jogging gloves and a hat this morning. sheeze is it ever going to get warm? this time of year is such a tease.
|
Nice ride this morning, a little cool so I wore a light sweater and my windbreaker. Legs felt good and strong. I did witness some road rage between two cars, the one lady was just laying on the horn to the guy in front of her which was scary as they were driving near a school.
Took the day off yesterday from work so I went for a little joyride and I got blasted by wind on the way back, nothing like a little sand in the face. Worked on my girlfriend's road bike so she will have an easier time keeping up when we ride together. The other bikes she owns are tanks. :) |
I can't wait for it to warm up a bit more. Nice ride this morning, regardless. Did the full 24 miles from home and found my nutrition plan worked quite well. Met up with a co-worker half way and rode the rest of the way with company. Looking forward to the ride home!

My commuting routine has gotten all out of whack since BTWW. I rode every day last week except Bike to Work Day on Friday because I had an out of town meeting. Didn't ride to work Monday because I had to stay him with a sick child, but did manage to squeeze in a ride from home after my wife got home from work. However, I didn't ride to work today because the forecasters are calling for severe thunderstorms this afternoon with a tornado watch, so I decided it would be a good day to drive and restock the supplies. Forecast looks good for the rest of the week, so hopefully I will get back on my routine.

High 60s and breezy...clear sky and beautiful! :) Had a dog (older puppy actually) run along side of me for about 1/4 mile or so...he wasn't barking, wasn't aggressive, I talked to him, and he just seemed to want to race! A good morning.

Rainy in DC.
Passed 2,000 miles for the year today- 75% of which are from commuting. Last year I didn't reach 2K until mid-October. (my commute increased by 10 miles, to 23 r/t last Fall.) |
Warm and fast. My wife is starting to stay with me a bit more on the flats, which is nice. The new gearing is settling in nicely and I passed about 20 cars today. Life is good. :D

yesterday was our first day of 110 degree blast furnace AZ heat. argh. it's gonna be a long summer.

Guess what happens when the temp drops nearly 40F in 24hrs? Tomorrow: Windy with lots of sunshine. Winds WSW at 20 to 30 mph. Winds could occasionally gust over 40 mph. Al |
Put a nail through the All Condition Armadillo on the way home last night. The rear tire is just about worn out and this is the first flat.
My multitool was missing from my bag so I had to remove and patch the tube with the wheel on (bolt-on wheels). |
On the fence about whether to ride in for the afternoon at work--took The Kid in for a 15-month checkup this morning--because of the forecasted weather tarwheel mentioned.
Yesterday's afternoon ride was FAST. My wife had asked me to hurry home so we could pick up The Kid at day care together, plus on the way out I ran into another commuter from my building. He's faster than I am and takes a slightly shorter route that meets up again with mine, but I caught up to him anyway! :thumb: |
Saw some wild turkeys on the way in (no, that's not a reference to any motorists). :) Nice cool ride.
|
I pushed it on the way home last night. Looked like it was going to pour at any minute and I didn't feel like getting wet. It was raining this morning when I walked the dog, but by the time I left it had pretty well stopped. I rode in rain gear just in case and had a blast. The road was still wet and I got to test out the fenders I put on last weekend. I was like a little kid riding thru puddles to see if I'd get wet or not. The fenders did their job, which made it fun!

Flatted this morning about halfway, so wound up being a little late. Otherwise an uneventful ride, and quite a bit cooler than it's been lately.
|
Temperature dropped and the wind picked up. Had to scramble around trying to find my knee and armwarmers before leaving this morning.
|
Thats one of the things I love about my commute is the wildlife I get to see. Lately I've been able to see Sandhill Cranes feeding in a field. Commuting along the Mississippi river there's always something.
|
Nearly perfect. I was trying to take it easy after a century on Saturday and a couple of hammerfests to and from work yesterday. However, someone had to pass me. I ended up staying close to him without exerting myself too much. I think all I did was pick up my pace and annoy the other rider. Oh well.
|
nice ride in this morning - uneventful, but very nice. the ride home last night was fast too - not sure why, it just was!
finally put my fenders on last night after some modifications/hacks on the rear fender and also install toeclips (strapless). Have been clipless for a while but wanted to try out the toeclips as the cleats are wearing out and I need new ones. I am using my Merrell Waterpros with these and it feels great - nice air running over my feet while riding! hopefully will miss the tstorms this afternoon, but part of me hopes to hit them so I can try out my new fenders! |
Nice and uneventful this morning: well, the only event was that I forgot my sunglasses. Partly cloudy.
This was the first time in a long time I commuted in without a change of clothes or a lunch; this time, deliberately, because I left a change at work yesterday. The reduction in weight was welcome! |

Looks like I made a good call driving today. Severe thunderstorms hit our area about 4:30 pm, right when I leave work usually. There were some tornadoes and hail up to 2" in size, and it was extremely windy. I hope other NC commuters fared OK. This is not the kind of weather to ride in, no matter how much of a diehard you are.
|
Had my first encounter with rain on my commute on the way home today. :) I quite enjoyed it and almost made it up the killer hill on the last part of my route home. It's pretty steep and I'm trying to get up in one go through stubbornness. ;) I get closer every day.
|
Sunny. mid 50s on the ride in. mid 60s on the way out. Terrible head wind going home. Semi's were even worse. I'm putting a sign on the back of my backpack.
|
windy today but another good commute here in central Florida.
