Great day today, light tailwind, light traffic, sun glasses. Just kinda cruised in.
Was dropped again by the rider on the red specialized. At least he mumbled a greeting as he passed. It bugs me that after all the years I've been doing this, trying to get the car traffic used to me and generally treat me as another vehicle, he is undoing what ever good will I've developed. He routinely blows through lights and signs, pops on and off sidewalks, scatters pedestrians and threads thru traffic lanes. Reminds me of an aggressive New York bike messenger. Seems to me he's exactly the kind of rider that pisses off the drivers. |
Oh my! Shorts and a t-shirt today! Wheeeeeeeeeeeee! :D I'm taking this afternoon off and going to sit in the sun at my favourite pub.
|
I hiked to the bus. Going "out" after work.
Is it National Bike to Work Day today? :o I saw quite a few bikes on the MUP. Way more than usual. That might explain it. Here's the bad part: Over the bus radio, the dispatcher told all the drivers to ask if anyone coming in on a certain bus might have left their bicycle on the bus's bike rack.  |
yes it is....another reason I hated being on the train!
|
pouring rain. I'm just not outfitted (or strong willed) enough to do this in heavy rain.
|
Warm morning, kind of misty. I forgot it was Bike to Work day (heck, EVERY day is Bike to Work day!) till I got to the MUP and saw the big tent set up. Passed 4 pit stops on my route, and every one they waved me over and gave me stuff. They were so excited to see me that I hated to disappoint.
Total haul: 8 mini clif bars, 1 tiger milk bar, 4 packs of electrolyte powder drink mix, a banana, an orange, and a T shirt. Plus a 15 minute massage! Whole thing added a good 30 minutes to my ride, but I didn't care. |
The weather in Ohio has been really strange to say the least.
Cold and rainy today. I got to ride my new MTB so that was the good aspect of it. Paul Hubs are smoooooooooth. |
Warmer today, 55F when I left. Rain this afternoon will be my first commute in wet, wifey's not really thrilled about it. Got a SuperFlash mounted on the back of my helmet last night, so that plus the blinky under my butt and I should be pretty visible from the rear even in the rain and with CT drivers who are not using to seeing cycle commuters. I ride right by her place of employment and will time it so she passes me on the way home and can see how far away the blinkies show up.

Summer's here. 77F when I left the house. It'll probably break 100F by the time I leave here at 5:30 this afternoon. At least the wind has died down.
Rode the fixed gear and managed to hit 32mph behind a delivery truck on L Street. Gotta love that spin! |

Nice sunny day today. Supposed to set a temp record, >90F. We'll see. Came in late after counting bikes at my 6 yr old's school for the organizers of 'bike to school day'. >50 today (vs 15 on Tuesday).

Broke a spoke... that's a first for me. Limped it in as is, trued it abit at work to the point it's ridable to get me home.
|
Saw two coyotes this morning, in different parts of my ride.
Saw another one this past Tuesday morning, too. |
My 51st commute of the year in Seattle and the *first* one with shorts, short-sleeve jersey and no knee warmers, arm warmers, spare jacket on the rack, etc. Predicted high: 85 degrees.
*and* it was Bike to Work day, with stations set up all over town offering free coffee, snacks, water, etc. My office building even put out free pastries and coffee outside the biker showers. Zillions of bikers out today -- with all the newbies out, the first day of the year when I passed more people than passed me! |
Yessss...! Sun and warmth! Lots of people on bikes today for BTW. Had to pass someone weaving up a hill, obviously flustered but doing OK! :) Due to early commute I had my long sleeve t on, but I'm sleeveless for the ride home. No wool, no winter coat, no full fingered gloves, with sunglasses. Joy. Of course all the drivers forget how to drive in the sun, so be careful out there. And there's a baseball game tonight which will make it nuts, NUTS, on the southern ride home...
|
Hmmm - ride home was sunny, almost no wind, 74*f, early departure = no traffic. Doesn't get much better than that.
|
Beautiful weather today. Started to take a side-trip around Greenlake on my way home from work, but got half way around and realized what a bad idea that was. It's not a good place for bikes - all pedestrians. Gotta go s-l-o-w and watch everyone. Got back in the street and took a long route home instead.

no ride :-(
here it was national bike to work day, but too much rain for me. i wimped out and took public transport instead... i saw 1 other commuter in pm, good to see friends on the bus too. if i was touring, and had all day to get "there", this ride would have happened (still trying to justify) happy weekend! |
cold wet nyc spring rain cold

Rode into work Monday of this week and today. With it being BTW day today, 5 other people rode into the office too, with distance ranging from 1.5 miles to 16 miles; mine was 12. Everyone who rode said they will be doing it more often this year, especially on Fridays when it is unofficial "casual day." The weather was cold this morning, but it really warmed up later in the day with very light winds.
Looking forward to more commutes this year and beyond! |
It was beautiful today. Sunny, cool, little wind. I even got a genuine "Hello" from a passenger in a car. I didn't wave in time, I was expecting a snyde remark, but was pleasanly suprised. I did have time to flash a smile :) My only gripe with today's ride into work (yes I work every other weekend, nature of my job) I was passing cars on the right while approaching a red light, about 10 cars deep. I spot a driver of a ford SUV lookin at me in her side view mirror. As I get closer, she starts to turn her SUV into the curb to block me! I manage to squeeze by, but seriously I just don't understand that kind of person. Anyway, a T-storm is said to be rolling through during my ride home tonight. Wish me luck.

Sunny, 74F, and windy as hell.
It was great. |
forgot to check in Friday. Nice day here in Indy. Nice ride and nice people. I guess just a nice day.
|
Cold but sunny this morning. Very nice riding weather. There seems to be increasing numbers of cyclists around. Which is good. Even if some of them do do weird things at junctions.

The ride to work was beautiful. I love riding to work, watching the sun rise and enjoying 50F weather. I'm gonna get spoiled by rides like that.
The ride home, though, was kind of a bummer. I ride on the MUP when it's light out. Today, I saw gang graffiti that wasn't there a few days ago. I also saw a mom being very mean to her little 4-year-old (walking away and telling him to catch up while he was sobbing for her about 25 feet back); cigarette butts, roaches, and empty liquor bottles littering the area around the bench where I take my rest stop; a pregnant teenager smoking a cigarette and yelling at someone on her cell phone at the park by my house; those and the other signs of ignorance and poverty I see on my route put me in a bummer mood. Sometimes the MUP uplifts me, sometimes it bums me out. I came from a poor neighborhood like the one I ride through on the way to my (lower middle class) house. I've lived in apartments where the first of the month was always a party because that's when everyone got their welfare checks. I understand poverty, I understand bad choices, I understand living paycheck to paycheck...but that doesn't mean I'm ever happy to see it. That doesn't mean I'd wish it on anyone. All the philosophizing and navel-gazing I did was able to distract me from the fact that I had just ridden 3 miles uphill, though. |
My ride to the grocery store was fantastic today, I love spring.

Had a close call this AM.
A bright, clear morning, about 6:30 AM, sun up, but still below the treeline so no visibility issues at all. I was riding North on Miami Blvd (3 lanes Northbound, 3 lanes South). I'm in the right lane doing about 20mph when a car passes me in the middle lane doing about 25- which is odd of course because traffic is usually moving 50-60 on that stretch of road. Driver has a cell phone pressed to his ear (not a big surprise). So no big deal, he keeps poking along in the middle lane and I'm pacing him ~ 50 feet back in the right lane. There's no other traffic immediately behind us, and I had to take a left turn so I start drifting left to get into the left turn lane. The driver, now about 20-30 feet ahead of me, and still in middle lane starts braking. I, now in the left lane, could have gone ahead and passed him but still wasn't sure what he was doing, so I hung back and waited a bit. Then with no warning at all (such as blinkers) he does a left hand U-turn right in front of me. I had to jam on the brakes and swerve into the middle lane to avoid him, approaching traffic behind me hitting their brakes too. I began yelling WTF are you doing? etc.... He of course just kept on going. Not even sure if he knew I was there or not and that he could easily have injured or killed me. Lesson learned...If you're not sure what the driver is doing stay away from him! I'm glad I did, cuz if I had passed him on the left, which was my intial reaction (and totally legal) I probably would have ended up in the hospital. Other than that, a spectacular morning for a ride. Looking forward to heading home with a 10-15 mph tailwind |
I dont understand why cell phones are not illegal to use while driving in all 50 states. More dangerous than drinking. I got hit jogging last year by some bimbo on a cell phone.
|
Taking the day off today to get some things done around the house, so no commute. I will get out for a long(er) ride this morning, though. Trying to get some rides longer than my commute in so maybe I won't feel quite so spent when I get to the office at the end of a ride.
|
Great ride this morning. I've added some mileage to the morning route and it turned out great.
Only downside was that at about the 4 mile mark I realized that I'd forgotten my water bottle ... Doh! Grabbed one at the closest station and kept going. |
