I'm curious...how fast do most of you guys/gals cruise on your commute? Seems like I am mostly around 14-19 MPH.

On a really good day I can average 16-17mph on my 10 mile commute. On most days though I average about 14-15mph. I have noticed that the more I ride during the week the lower my mph has been, but I have only been riding steadily for 6 weeks.

Got lunged at by a German Sheppard that was on a fixed leash, rather than a retractable/ adjustable leash. The dog's owner got tugged a couple feet into the street but gained control of the dog before he could get to me. Still the event made my heart skip a beat.

The weather was perfect on the way home. It was warm and cloudy. More important than the weather, though, was the noise. There was none. I heard wind and I heard traffic, but those fade into the background as white noise, kind of like the soothing drone of the fan that lulls me to sleep. All day, I had heard nothing but strident voices and bad news. A whole twenty minutes or so of not talking to anyone really helped me chill out.

Mattrek 07-21-08 10:41 PM

Bad. It was hot. Too hot, made me feel like I was going to lose my lunch, but I toughed it out.

Thomas Brock 07-22-08 05:12 AM

Warm and foggy. Not too bad, though I'm dreading the heat on the ride home.

And it's definitely not a bad commute considering I'd been lazy and skipped June and most of July...

girljen 07-22-08 06:08 AM

I got coffee!! That always makes the commute better, even though it involves busting my butt up a huge hill and coming in to work right at the buzzer. On top of that, the weather was nice, the stoplights were in my favor, and it was just awesomeness all around.

harleyfrog 07-22-08 07:21 AM

Beautiful day, got into a higher gear this time around (top out at an estimated 20 MPH, my fastest yet, for about 30-45 seconds). All this after debating whether I should ride or not; glad I didn't listen to that inner voice. :D

Takabrash 07-22-08 07:27 AM

Today's commute was GREAT. I got my new Cross Check!

evblazer 07-22-08 07:50 AM

I almost got my self t-boned by another cyclist today. It was weird I was riding down a road and pulled up to a stop sign looked both ways then looked left and saw someone on an upright with bright yellow saddlebags and just kinda got stunned like I was looking at some mirage. Tried to move but failed to clip in and almost stalled out but I finally got myself together and across the road without slowing them up too much I hope.

So um sorry about that to the first commuter I ever saw in the dark going north/west on royal this morning in los colinas.

Otherwise it was just slow. Seems I am slow in the am and fast in the pm lately. You'd think I'd be slower in the pm when it is 100+ not counting asphault/cement warmth.

mikepop 07-22-08 08:16 AM

Nice and cool this morning; a nice change of pace from the heat/humidity/thunderstorms lately.

elTwitcho 07-22-08 08:17 AM

Commute was ok. I felt alot faster than usual and was riding in a faster gear than I normally use. Up until some bonehead took issue with me riding anywhere but the gutter, as he rode past me on his motorcycle he shouted that I had to be "1 meter from the sidewalk!". It gets tiresome with all the people who heard a traffic law from a friend of a friend of a friend that now thinks it's actually in the highway traffic act.

LordBass 07-22-08 08:21 AM

Adjusted the saddle down about a half inch and shaved two minutes off my morning commute. Felt above average. It could be favorable alignment of the stars, today's cool air, or the cinnamon roll I nabbed at home before heading out. :)

It's been humid like a wet blanket for a week. Hoping to avoid daily evening showers on the return ride.

pinkrobe 07-22-08 08:49 AM

I felt quite strong on the way in. I think I'm getting faster. I may have to switch my gear to 53x17...

starla 07-22-08 08:54 AM

Surprisingly cool this morning for Texas in July. For a few minutes, wished I had worn sleeves. But fun as usual :)

ISaacG 07-22-08 08:54 AM

With my slicks and steel frame, I don't take out my (dad's) road bike when they are predicting rain. Which makes this a lousy week :(
I think we got this hybrid sitting in the back of the garage not being used. Maybe I'll get it down, tune it up and use it to ride to work in rainy weather.

jpdesjar 07-22-08 09:03 AM

nice ride
got the new gr-9 pedals yesterday and they are so comfy
can't wait to ride home

blgaither 07-22-08 09:06 AM

Awesome! The ride to work in the morning is generally cool with relatively low level of traffic. I picked up some new neon green riding jersey's and a new commuter bag (novara) and I can tell that I've been noticed more by motorists. Going home is another story, people are absolutely crazy and inconsiderate in the evening! I've added some info to my website that discusses some of the things to do to make commuting a bit less dangerous. http://mrbikefantastic.blogspot.com/

Happy biking!

Raining on the way in, second day of commuting after a two week hiatus due to illness that ended up going into my lungs. It was enjoyable and brought me peace.

mangosalsa 07-22-08 09:26 AM

Good ride this morning. Stopped on the bridge over I-40 to watch the traffic jam for a couple of minutes. Had a nice laugh about it and moved on. Only saw 1 other bike today.

MyPC8MyBrain 07-22-08 09:29 AM

Saw a young buck nibbling on someones flowers on the way in. We just looked at each other as I passed within 5 feet of him.

He didn't care that I was coming by and I didn't care that he was eating someones flowers.

You don't get that interaction when you ride in the car.

dalmore 07-22-08 10:20 AM

Dangnabbit - back in the cage today - all swollen up after just two commutes. f-ing hamstring injuries ...

HardyWeinberg 07-22-08 10:27 AM

Great fast ride. New chain, cassette, and scrupulously cleaned crankset, so just flew.

77midget 07-22-08 10:27 AM

Last night's ride was nice. Managed to sneak between a couple small weather systems, and stayed dry all the way.

This morning, I was tired, so I tried to keep it slow, which just about worked, as I was a couple (2) minutes slower, but found myself still going fast in some areas. I seem to have this problem a lot where I cannot intentionally ride slower :)

theWolf 07-22-08 10:28 AM

Well I tested my knee out after giving it a week and half off yesterday but it hurts today. I'm not liking the direction this is going so I scheduled an appointment with an Orthopedic today. Bad news is, the appointment isn't until August 5th when my health benefits finally kick in. I'm staying off the bike until then for fear I could be making the injury worst. This sucks pretty bad but who knows, maybe another two weeks of rest might help it.

caloso 07-22-08 10:34 AM

Another cool day. Actually wore a longsleeved jersey this morning. And brought a set of my team kit in my backpack in case I get a chance to go on the local Tuesday night hammerfest this evening.

Itsjustb 07-22-08 10:39 AM

In 3 years of commuting I've never run into my friend Todd (a fellow commuter) on the way to work in the morning. Today it finally happened, though I had to bust my hump trying to catch him. Then he (unintentionally) humiliated me by mentioning that today was a "recovery ride". :-|

About 1/4 mile from our building we saw a fellow commuter pulled over on the grass. We stopped and asked him if he needed help. He didn't--he was changing a flat and had just pulled his kit out of his bag. Still, it felt good even to offer.

tkblazer 07-22-08 10:45 AM

first commute in about two weeks, went fairly well although the legs were feeling the 80 mile ride on sunday.. thinking about changing the gearing on the SS but i might try a tire change first and see how that effects the ride. ride time was just at two hours since there are some climbs. i think i'm going to take the long way home and head down to the coast

Bulldozer 07-22-08 10:45 AM

Yesterday's ride home was sweet - great tailwind so I hauled *****. The ride in this morning was warm. I was doing intervals today and a sprint at the end. That heated me up pretty good. With the weather in the 90's in the afternoons, I'm not seeing as many commuters.

GPSRanger 07-22-08 10:53 AM

Average speed

I generally average 10MPH on my commutes. The fastest that I have ever gotten my MTB to go is 18 but that's with the wind to my back and going downhill! So my commute to/from work is 9 miles and I make it in an hour, sometimes 45 minutes when I feel like pushing it.

Kotts 07-22-08 01:21 PM

A bit damp this AM. We had some serious storms rolling through around 3-4 this morning, but it was down to light rain by the time I left at 5:50. By the time I was 1/3 of the way to the office, it was completely stopped.

Rode a bit slower (wet manhole covers and steel plates set into the pavement make me cautious), but otherwise no big deal.

Now the total lack of hot water in the shower, on the other hand...
