Coldest commute of the year (so far). Minus 5 F when I left the house and about 2 above F when I got to work (7 miles one way). We don't have much snow up here so far, so no problems like you fellas in the Lower48.

Cold and wet. Very wet. Not soooo very cold, 30sF. But wet. Not wet enough to soak through my gloves (that would be >1" rain /hr) but wet enough that I don't know if my wool tights will dry before go-home time. Flat on daily driver last night, walked it home, haven't fixed it yet, rode mtn bike (no fenders) in today. I have cut out some coroplast fenders for it (my own pattern) but haven't mounted them yet. More zip ties, need more zip ties!! xmas shopping on way home, and today is last formal commute of '07, taking rest of Dec off to match 6 yr old's school break. We will be biking around town for errands and social engagements though.

Missed the morning ride in yesterday after leaving the bike at work for drinkage on Friday.

Went down last night (got the front wheel caught in a lip between track concrete and regular road surface) in front of a streetcar, wasn't close and I made sure to get myself to the side damn quick.

Otherwise not too bad, still a bunch of snow and slush on some roads, but the skinny tyres cut right through (weird feeling, I tense up ready to fight through the snow but it just cuts right through).
Need to get fenders, booties/covers and my MTB rear wheel fixed in case this stuff gets icey. Coming down with a cold/flu thing which doesn't help, so right home and bed tonight methinks.

My parents sent over an IKEA safety vest from the UK (named 'Puttrall' for those curious) which is pretty neat, it doesn't expand/adjust like my other vest, so I can only wear it around me and not my bags, but I've been using the pannier recently so it all works out.

Timed my short commute today on my new fixed-gear Redline 925, and it's about 10 minutes door to door, which gives me a nice 40 minutes at home for lunch! It's a little less than 2 miles each way, so a nice easy 7-8 miles each day before I even hit the gym at night certainly doesn't hurt things, and I love it!

Only my second week of commuting. Fenders, headlight, more blinkies coming for Xmas.

Wet, wet, wet. Had everyone at work worrying about me riding to and from home. With a 10 minute commute, it's a nice little wet course. Of course now it's time for a hot shower and dry clothes!

Today was my last ride to work until 2008, unless something unfortunate happens. I'll probably still ride to the gym, which is beside work, so that still counts I suppose.

Briefly thought about driving today because I forgot to set my alarm and overslept by 30 minutes. Instead I skipped breakfast and rode to work. Usually someone brings in food to the office every day around the holidays, but no such luck today. So, I guess that I'll go eat a big lunch.

Our pitiful weather forecasters are at it again. Yesterday they said it would be much warmer today, with highs in mid-50s and no chance of rain. Well, some showers moved through this morning, and now they're saying the highs will be in the mid-40s. I need to start ignoring the forecasts.

good rides both to and from work. chilly, but i warmed up quiet nicely after the first 5-10 minutes. only a couple of mildly annoying drivers to deal with. one dog came crashing out of the bushes. i'm not sure what, but something big and black with enormous teeth. i yelled "get back!" twice and he received a swift kick to the jowls with a size 8 work boot. he didn't give chase anymore after that.
tonight the spouse and i are doing the tour de lights downtown, so the raleigh and the KHS are decked out in lights, bells, garland and ribbons. should be fun.

Headed up the Greenway after work. pretty uneventful until hitting the Metro North overpass under the George. Seems they (NYRP?) decided to stop clearing the path right there. They have cleared up to the 181 ramp in years past. Not this time, so everyone's favorite hill up to the HHP is basically unpassable on a bike. The rest of the path up to Dyckman is not cleared, but that's par for the course. They never clear that section. It was a long hard slog even with studs. Gonna be sore in the AM.

The Dyckman section is essentially closed for the season unless it warms up and rains for a Week IMO.

Chilly this morning in the DC/Northern Virginia area - 21F when I left home. The good news is NO WIND. The commute was invigorating as usual after the first 10 minutes of warm up. Did a bit of "ice skating" on a couple of frozen puddles but luckily kept the bike upright.

I debated bike vs. bus this morning as the roads looked a bit messy, but promises of it "tapering off towards afternoon" made the bike win out. At least schools were closed so there was less traffic.

This was definitely my most challenging ride, but the worst thing that happened were some close-call skids in a few sections.

I did get a couple of honks from people behind me who didn't want to take the opportunity to take their SUVs out of the tire tracks/change lanes for 10 seconds to pass me. And someone yelled something - could have been good or bad. Who can tell? Nothing to do but hold your line and keep going.

cold. tired of riding this cheap wal-mart mtn bike as a commuter. just can't decide on a road bike or flat bar fitness bike. just dream of 700c wheels

Good commute this morning, temps in the low 30's. Had plenty of energy and reeled in another rider, from whom I then follow and bummed his really bright lights for most of the rest of the ride. Just placed an order for new tires, tape, and headset. I'd been on slicks since blowing out my back Ritchey Speedmax cross tire and holding my breath on icy/wet patches. I'd been looking for the best deal in a 700x30 and finally settled on the Kenda Kwick, they should be good enough in the snow. I've also noticed a notchiness in the headset, most likely bearings, so I'll replace those soon...brakes and tape too. Commuting miles put a lot of wear and tear on the bike, I recently replaced my entire drive train and brake pads. Oh well, it's much cheaper than car expenses and definitely more fun.

Man was I whipped this morning. The last 2 days I've left 20-30 minutes later in the morning, just because it's slowing down a little bit ahead of the holidays and it's nice to ride in the daylight at least once in a while. Yesterday was a great ride, today I was beat only a mile or so into my 12 mile trip. No real reason either- no wind, no rain, etc. Maybe the few days off next week will be a good thing- recharge my batteries a bit.

Hot and sunny. When I set off I had a stinking hangover, and I planned to take it easy. But once I got going I felt much better, and was able to make really good time. The light traffic and helpful green lights helped, though.

enuff, it was drizzling as I left Riviera Beach.....I pedaled
like krazy to Rt. 1 and everything flowed incredibly !!
The wind that was blowing the storm up helped me along
but the best part was a guy in a white van that passed me/
me him so forth, signaled me over into a looong access lane to a
bourgious Yacht club-develpment and ran blocker for me

Nice ride in this morning - temps around 30F and traffic very light (maybe folks leaving for holiday already). No FWB today.

Last night I cleaned and re-lubed my chain and other drivetrain components; it made a big difference in ride quality. I guess I have been a bit negligent about doing this frequently enough - maybe once every week is a justified as I'm riding about 110 miles a week now.

Drove today as it's my last workday of the year. Need to bring home a bunch of laundry from my office, and brought in some food to share with coworkers. The week before Christmas is non-stop food where I work, with people bringing in goodies everyday. I've felt guilty because it's hard carrying much more than I have to on my bike -- although I did bring pecan pies to our Christmas lunch -- so I decided to bring in some pumpkin pie today. Have a great Christmas and New Year's everyone. I won't be commuting again until Jan. 2, although I do plan to ride my bike as much as possible. Typically Christmas week is one of my higher mileage weeks of the year, but it depends a lot on the weather.

29F and ice. Did the 'slide move' over a speed bump. Ouch. The parking lot was salted with some wimpy little pellets...it looked dicey so I slowed down and crash/slid about 10' Large bruise on my side but OK...I'm gonna catch it from the spouse!

Today's commute was the MOST FUN I've ever had commuting! After several icy days in the last month, I put my new studs on last week, but was then disappointed to not need them... until today! The morning ride was very frosty on the south hills - everyone at work was swapping stories about slipping around on the way up. I had no problems - in fact I couldn't tell how slick it was until I stopped to take off a layer, put my foot down and slipped. The roads thawed soon after sunrise, so no problems on the way home.

The real fun was the ride home, though. I got off early and decided to take the scenic route. I was feeling confident on the studded knobbies, so dove off the pavement and bombed down the lawn (1/3 mile with 250 ft drop; rocks, roots, tall grass...) I've done this before on my MTB, but never on my B-stone commuter. I couldn't believe how well it handled! I hopped off the road several more times on the way home - even rode through a flooded culvert. Now I just need the snow to come down a little lower...

Happy Solstice to all. Us Northern Hemispherians will soon begin to see some more light at the end of the commute to work or home pretty soon. Today was a crystal blue sky day here in southern cal, did a 15 mile commute to work at dawn. On the 14 mile pedal home I left work a bit early and finished just after sunset. The cool dry air today was invigorating, I felt pretty good for a Friday after a busy week. Couple of more commute days next week and that will wrap it up for another year. I'll have to add up this years commute miles. Cheers.

I was out for a little bit today doing some last minute X-mas shopping. I love how they reserve the space next to the door for my bike. Makes parking convienient. The wind was out in force today, out of the west as usual. I didn't mind today because I can take my time. I don't like it on work days cause I have to leave early.

Hello everyone,
It poured down rain all night and morning just until I stepped outside at 7:45am with my bike to head off to work. 38 degrees with no wind, dead calm. To the west (where I was going) mostly clear blue sky, Yes I said blue sky! It seems like months have past since I'd seen such phenomenon. And wouldn't you know it, not a drop of rain all the way, some ten miles. Also most curiously, the streets were void of most cars. Two of the stop lights I even had to run up on the sidewalk to push the crosswalk button just so I could get across the intersection.

We closed early at 3:30pm. Coming home, mostly blue sky and it warmed up to 42 degrees and again no wind, dead calm. The few cars that were on the road were mostly very courteous giving me six to eight feet when passing.

To the west the heavens were on fire this evening with brilliant orange with some red feathering. To the east a full moon peeking throw the billowing clouds. Absolutely gorgeous! I have to say it was the most enjoyable commute since last summer.

Life is good on a bike!

Intense, A 20 mile commute on an open freeway shoulder. If you can handle the wind blast a line of semis can haul you down the road.
