Brisk, baby! 35F and foggy. But I was prepared, first day rockin' the hi-viz chartreuse. Amazing to bike through the fog and see the hi-viz people looming out of it at me (and the ninjas appear like icebergs to the titanic...)
|
None today. I had an interview and decided to wear my business suit. As in "I am the BUSINESS." So I had my wife drop me off on the way to taking the kids to preschool.

Ride to classes was fine. First time with a full pack on with the fixed, so it was a bit of a shock but made it through fine.
Coming home was hilarious though. Got the typical honk, gave the typical finger. Guy rolls up next to me, some ex metalhead with greasy curly long hair and some hilarious wolf/eagle shirt with his girl in the passenger seat, pacing me screaming how I better do something or other before he hits me in the head. I just stare at him and make an angry face and give him the turn of the century Irish boxer 'whats for!' fist moves. Still staring at me, so I go for my bag to grab my U lock, and he drives away... I eventually pass him at a light though. I get one of these every couple of days. |
The ride in was fine. Does anyone else here tap their handlebars as if they were drums? I caught myself doing that today. Anyway, I worked until 9 PM. The night's foggy and I was a little clammy when I pulled into the driveway.

I have to tell you how lucky I am. My 8 mile work commute is about 95% on the bike trail. I see wild turkeys, burrowing owls and cross over a bridge with a beautiful river underneath.
:giver: |
I got transferred with my job and now work a lot closer to home and am finally able to leave the car at home and take the bike. I had my first commute today, only 4 miles! Now I need to make my road bike a little more commuter friendly (lights and stuff). the ride is pretty nice, there's bike lanes the whole way there, there's barely any traffic until I get closer to my work, and theres a bridge over an interstate right before I get to work so after pedaling my legs off in first gear all the way up I coast the other side all the way to work. I'm in FL so I'm hoping it will start cooling off soon to make the ride that much nicer.

First commute in roughly 3 weeks - I did Cycle NC, Sept 27-Oct 4, so took a while off the bike to recover a bit from the 7 day/455 miles.
I noticed a flat on my commuter's rear tire last weekend. Changed it out, and this AM....flat again. Hurriedly took off tube and tire and tossed aside for later inspection. Put on new tube/tire in about 5 minutes flat and was still able to get to work on time.....Very ironic that I rode 455 miles without a flat, but then had 2 flats in my garage with no mileage at all...go figure. Other than the flat tire, and very mild temps, nothing noteable happened on the ride in. |
Big Ron, how was Cycle NC?
Commutes last night and this morning were cool and crisp. Nothing really to write home about, though. |
ahhhh super commute today. 55 degrees and overcast. I'm a sucker for fall weather.
|
Beautiful morning for a ride. Can't complain.

nice speedy ride in this morning, as i was taking some cool down laps in the lot at work i almost got run over! yikes, usually people are just driving in and parking but this person was backing out, it surprised me for sure

My commutes this week have been depressing and no fun at all due to chain slippage. My bike has only 950 miles or so on it, so I'm surprised if it turns out that the slippage is because of wear on the drivetrain. I tried fine tuning the derailer hoping that might be the problem, but no luck. So it's off to the LBS tonight to see what they say about it.
I'm seriously bumming about this. My commute is often the best part of my day and it sucks beyond all belief to not be able to accelerate effectively. Stiff link in the chain maybe? |
Cool today (39), two long sleeve shirts, a hat, gloves, but still in shorts. Nice ride in, no wind, nothing out of the ordinary to report. Only negative was that I hit most of the lights red. Whatever
|
Drove today. Had an assignment 30 miles away, and they were paying cash. As much as I love cycling to work, with the current economy I have to take all the assignments I can get.
|
Coldest day so far this season (okay, this is Texas, so that meant it was nearly 60) and damp, so I put on long pants and wore a sweatshirt. This turned out to be overkill.
|
I had originally planned to drive today because I have to work from 7 am to 10 pm, and I didn't want to have to cycle home after such a long day. However, the weather is so incredibly sweet right now in NC that I rode my bike after all. So I'll be commuting in the dark both ways today. I'll be whupped by the time I get home about 11 pm.
|
I had a pretty decent ride in today. Nothing dangerous or bad happened. My lights did their job, warning drivers not to drift into my path, and illuminating the pedestrians in urban camo [matte black clothing, no reflective surfaces anywhere]. I even made up a 1-block deficit to catch all green lights downtown. Awesome.

I took the alternate route this morning. I was scheduled to give blood and that route took me past the blood collection site.
I finish giving blood, the lady gives me the usual post-donation instructions, then looks at me and says, "You're going to ride away from here, aren't you?" "Yep." :) Only about .75 miles from there to my building, no big deal. I arrived at the bike rack only to find some jerk had taken my usual parking spot! The "jerk" in question was actually Big Ron; he and I now work in the same building. Just kidding big guy! ;) |
I hope the wind shifts directions before the ride home.....
|
Great weather, mid 50's, sunny and no wind. Did 23 mile ride home 3/4 of that was dirt rode and trail. Life is good.
|
40s, damp, not raining though. I was kind of hoping it would to see how the new raincoat does.
4 panniers today, bringing a lot of stuff to the office. |

the ride in was very nice, started of at 30 degrees and no wind. ended mid 40's , sunny no wind! Hope it's like this on the way to work and the way home!
There was a bad crash with 5 cars on the way in, I really hope everyone is okay... they were all out walking but I heard the ambulance as I rode away! |

Jerk huh? Watch it Beej, or I'll sit on your pretty little bike and bend your rims :). I stopped to check on my rear tire after lunch to make sure it was still holding air....Looks like it was just you and me riding in today. 2 out circa 2000 people...pretty poor showing for such a beautiful day! Take it easy on your ride home. Donating blood always makes me feel really drained (pun intended) |
I woke up at about 1:30 am and just could not for the life of me get back to sleep. So... i left for work about about 2:30am. Man that was sweet, almost no traffic and perfectly calm.

Nearly got left-hooked this morning (it's a one-way street with bike lanes on both sides and I was on the left). She didn't signal or check her mirror but I shouldn't have been there anyway. Brain dead.
|
Yesterday on the ride home, I was squeezing between an SUV stuck in traffic, and another SUV parked on the right... fairly slowly, but fast enough for my bag, which was sticking out farther than I thought to whack the guy in traffic's mirror. and push it forward (one of those folding kinds) ... whoops.. Luckily he didn't seem angry when I went back to check if I broke it and straightened it for him.
|
Uneventful short version of my commute this morning. Yesterday I rode to the doctor to have my right wrist looked at again 6 weeks after a fall. Not broken but not healed, so now I've got it in a bigger badder splint. I can still ride but shifting is hard. Bummer.
Yesterday I was waiting at a light at the front of the marked bike lane (so to the left of the rightmost lane) when a car pulled up on my right. Perfectly reasonable place to be to turn right, but the clown went straight when the light changed. What are people thinking? |
A semi buzzed me on my ride home....he honked before he went by (like I didn't know he was coming anyway) so I guess I should thank him for that! I'd very much like to see the coward face to face. :)
