Not bad, just started commuting this week though. Rode into a headwind this morning, then the wind shifted for my ride home. Nice huh?

No classes today due to Rosh Hashannah (Happy New Year!) but I rode out to get new shoes (basic nikes marked down $20 because they are decorated with jack-o-lanterns--fortunately for my wallet I have no taste) and a haircut. On the way home I was instructed to get out of the street by a helpful motorist. That's a first for me, after 6+ months of commuting in LA!

Oooohhhh. I broke my very first spoke on the way home. Didn't notice it until I got in the driveway. But... I had my personal best time for the 17.7 mile commute!!!! Called the bike shop and they don't think that they can fix it in one day. Crap. Tomorrow it is supposed to rain, but I was hoping to bike in again on Thursday. I'll drive 45 miles in my car to the shop in the next big town over if I have to. I can't stomach the idea of missing a ride in on a nice day. The saying below goes... I am so driven to bike in that I leave everything else in my life to the side. Not a good way to be. Not an intelligent way to be. I think that's a sign of OCD. I'll feel better if I get on my other bike and go for a ride around the neighborhood.

About halfway through my shift, I came down with the cold from hell. I got a ride home from coworker F. Thx, dude!

I think I figured out a place where I can hang my clothes up during the day so they'll dry out. Luckily I always wear little shorts under dresses, so I just wore my regular clothes instead of putting my wet ones back on. If any of you other Causeway Commuters saw a girl in a dress heading to Sacramento this evening, that was me! I see a lot of commuters going in to Sac when I'm going to Davis, and vice versa. I probably saw 10-15 people today. |
So now that I'm back in Missoula, I sort of miss my 15 mile summer commute. Now it's 3 miles one way, and only three days a week. Funny, when I was in Portland I missed how close everything was in Missoula. Grass is always greener, eh? I will get to repeat that comute this December though, so we'll see how fun that is. I'm sure I'll appreciate the short ride when it's snowing/raining/cold.
Oh, and drivers in this town are freaking space cadets. |

It's about 90 miles from San Francisco to Sacramento. Davis is pretty expensive and housing is scarce. I think it's less expensive than San Francisco though! I live in Sac because my rent is about $300 cheaper than it would be in Davis. And it's only 15 miles away.
I have Tuesdays and Thursdays off so I don't have a commute report for today. Can't wait to get on the bike tomorrow though! |
it was pouring rain today, ironically i had the most fun riding to work today. :D
air was clean, which means i was able to push it hard, for longer period of times at top speed. the water flaring out of the fenders was beautiful, it was almost like riding a fast boat or something. the best of all, only my hair, and shoes/socks got wet (forgot to wear my waterproof shoes). it was very refreshing today, normally after such a ride, i get very hot, but today it was so refreshing. there was no problem breaking at all, actually the bike got cleaner after that ride, specially the wheels :D |
Rained really good on the way to PT, back home, work, and the Commissary. I felt so strong riding today that I thought I might have to pass some cars; this was after jogging 3 miles in the morning.

Had a wet ride into work this morning. It wasn't raining, but a line of thunderstorms moved through the area during the night and the roads were still wet at 6:30 a.m. Some bozo pulled out in front of me and almost ran me off the road. I didn't want to brake hard on the wet roads and wasn't sure my brakes would stop in time anyway, so I came around him on the left. Then he pulled into my lane, forcing me to the shoulder. I came very close to running off the pavement but kept my balance. I am pretty sure the driver saw me but not positive. I have a very bright front headlight and was wearing a bright yellow jersey. Good thing I was paying attention.

Saw lots of road kill on the way home yesterday. three snakes and 2 not yet road kill - I'm thinking the temperature dropping is making them seek the warmth of the blacktop. a 1-week-old and very smelly fox - I'll be glad when that corpse is gone, 1 chipmonk, 1 green feathered sparrow sized bird, and one largish gray furred something or other - coyote maybe?
Met a bike commuter heading my way on the MUP this morning. We both were surprised and chatted briefly. But I was in 300 watt mode so I moved on. |
Moist. Mid 50sF. It was raining on & off, so I wore my rain jacket. Probably didn't need it. It didn't really rain on my ride. I saw a grand total of 6 people, all in the space of about 1/4 mile. One was a cyclist. One was walking a beautiful Alsation. MUP population density: 1.2 per mile. :p

After too many days of not being on the bike, I rode into work this morning. It was quite chilly, mid-40s or so. I still wear shorts on the bike, and my legs stay mostly warm. I was wearing two shirts and gloves. I could've used something under my helmet.
My rear tire blew out on the 2nd Street Bridge. The sidewall was damaged, so no throwing a new tube in. Luckily, I'm close to a bike shop at that point. I walked the remaining mile or so, got a new tire, and was on my way. On the walking portion of the ride, I crossed the street at a crosswalk (against the signal) and nearly got hit. That was my own mistake. Surprisingly, I felt really good after the ride. I would probably be different if I'd had to walk four miles to get a tire though. |
Broke a spoke today! Boooo. I knew it was going to happen eventually, given the lazy wheel build a did on my front wheel. I need to get a spoke tension gauge. Other than that, the ride was fine. No scofflaws to chase down. Oh well.

Today was an uneventful ride. Yesterday, after getting stopped at a train (stupid trains), I had a nice chat with another bike commuter. It made the time pass by faster & made me wonder where he keeps all 16 of his bikes....

Nice ride in but there was a wild temperature swing between Edmonton and Nisku. Edmonton is listed at 9C and Nisku (Edmon Int'l) at 1.5C... i sure felt that coming in.

Cool this morning...don't want to have to deploy the pants, but mid to low 50s seems to be the tipping point.

a story in the paper today reminded me why I usually steer clear of the MUPs. A woman was hit by a cyclist and broke 7 ribs. Ouch. Not enough room on some of the paths, we need cycling specific ones, or better yet, actual bike lanes.

I followed a guy on a sweet fixie for a while, i wasnt drafting but just watching him from a distance and keeping his pace. Those fixed bike are nice. The guy had really good form. |
First day back on the bike after a week home sick. It was a very pleasant ride at about 45*F, and it did me a world of good. I still have a cough but I feel human again!
Every time I've been sick for the last 4 years, it's been true that in the last week I didn't ride every day. As long as I was riding daily, if I did get sick, it wasn't bad enough to miss work. The only times I was that sick I had either vacation days or days I drove for some reason within the previous week. |

Hi Noteon, Great gesture on your part to promote good PR with motorists. I try to nod and wave to motorist's that show courtesy. If motorists could only appreciate that cyclists are really their ally (meaning more gasoline for them) then perhaps they would be more courteous. More courtesy would then lead to the potential for more bike riders and less dependence on energy (perhaps naive but I could only hope). Anyway, thanks for sharing. |
Had to take daughter to school this morning so to late to ride, just as well, legs feel like lead and it was pouring. Tomorrow is suppose to be better but then I'm playing hooky on Friday.

Sunny and had a slight headwind again. No sunglasses this morning, I'm out of contact solution, have to pick some up on the way home. That made for some great eye-burning fun. I also felt a lot of resistance in my pedaling, I'm gonna have to check that my brakes aren't rubbing, but I think it was just a slow morning. Gotta stop missing breakfast. At least I still beat the bus.
I love my new UnderArmor shirt. It's a Burnt Orange, looks great out here in the sun, and it's really visible. Light as all heck too. Not quite lycra, but it's great. |
Got my cycle computer today...so that is fun. Temps upper 40's low 50's...so had to break out the windbreaker and some pants. Nice ride though. I wish my commute was longer sometimes.

i think my ride home today was probably the wettest and i had a blast, my shoes are now stuffed with paper and my pants are drying as well, my brooks was dry as a bone when i got home too, good stuff
as someone here said before any wet ride on a bike is better than a dry ride in a car. WOOT! |
