good one today. rode in with the sun coming up (5:45am in SoCal) and rode home with it setting (4:45pm) and great weather for biking.
i haven't biked to work in over a month for various reasons. today was my reintroduction and it was a great day for it, especially after having spent the last week in cold, snowy climes. |
Coldest this season this morning 12 degrees F. I wore enough layers to kill a moose, but it worked. I wore a compression baselayer under a t-shirt, wool sweater, and windbreaker. Bottom wore "weatherproof" pants with thermal lining and jeans; two pears of socks and boots. My gloves don't work so my hands were frozen, I also found out that I need a helmet cover...
|
Another morning, another internal struggle to get my butt out the door. I shouldn't have checked the weather; it was only 25 degrees outside. At 25 degrees, I wear the same clothing as I do at 35 degrees, I'm just not nearly as enthusiastic about riding!
Anyway, I rode, and I was not happy about it until I saw the crescent moon and the pretty little stars in the sky. It was a cold ride, but it was so quiet and so pretty! Sunday mornings are awesome. |
The ride home was (also!) cold and clear with lots of little stars and not much traffic. It's amazing how similar the rides to and from work are in the winter.
|
+1 on the similarity of the rides to and from work in the winter...I have actually found that I really enjoy cold weather riding.
|
27F/-3C and calm (for the first time in a week I think). Just about the upper range for my winter tights--a longer ride or more hills (part and parcel around here), and I would have been smokin'.
As it was, just my fingers wanting to fall off (nothing unusual there). The cold air that's been giving the eastern US an early winter lately is supposed to move out today, so I can stop H-ingTFU for a bit. :D |
42° F here this morning, felt good. Had 2 bikes cross my path this morning (no car problems!) , one running the red light in front of me, the other coming up the wrong way of the street.
I didn't slow down. |

12 degrees with a modest NW wind (across my path). Glasses fogged up frequently, and sometimes froze that way. Has anyone come up with a way to prevent this? I tried adjusting my scarf various ways but without much success. if I'm going to rise in the cold, I'd prefer being able to see. :-)
I had a great commute this morning. It was cold (29 F) but clear with no wind for a change. I had great luck with the traffic signals today, only catching two red lights and the longest light on my route turned green just as I was approaching it. My legs were also very fresh this morning because my weekend rides were slow and easy. It was so cold here that nobody wanted to ride fast, so it was like having 2 days of recovery rides. |
31F today with beautiful stars this morning. Had to yell at two small does to get them off the road in front of me. I think that 31-32 is my lower end for commuting. I got cold towards the end of my 14 mile commute. Cars were excellent today. Maybe that's because I watched the 'how to ride in traffic' cd I got when I joined the American Bicyclists Society; or whatever it is called. I'm looking forward to a 12mph tailwind to take me home this evening! May be raining though.
|
My hybrid car/bicycle commute wasn't too bad. It was rushed getting out of bed though and realised I had to get petrol which delayed me even further, but then the ride was awesome even though there were light showers and headwind in a few places

The bad news is that it was 15 degrees and I chose my clothes wrong.
The good news is that at least I overdressed instead of underdressing. |
32 degrees. Rode the newly mounted Marathon Winters in. Nice tire!! So after below freezing and icy all last week, I get a perfect commute after putting the studs on, figures...but a good dry run to seat the studs!
But in true Buffalo fashion, the rest of the week is suppose to be below freezing and snow |
20MPH headwind off the lake. Sunny and dry though.
I'm thinking I might throw the studs on when I get home this evening due to:
|
I'd complain that it was cold, but since it was only about 30 degrees, I'll keep my trap shut.
I dressed well and everything was ... not "toasty warm" but not freezing either. |
Not bad, low 30's, I guess. I added a fleece scarf but was otherwise nice and comfortable. Well, I got my replacement battery pack from batterystore.com in record time but then proceded to break the bulb. Actually, the bulb was already going bad but I broke the prongs when I tried to remove it. So, until my new bulbs arrive (nobody carries them locally), I'm force to go half-ninja: all black with just one blinkie, no headlight. Also, got new shoes this weekend, much more comfortable than the others. Gotta get my bad weather tires on the bike soon.
|
I woke up and decided to skip breakfast and ride straight to work. When I got on the bike though, my stomach started growling and I decided that I did not want to wait for lunch to have something to eat; So in the middle of my commute I made a detour to get breakfast. After that, I had to push myself to get to work on time. It was tough, but I made it with 3 minutes to spare.
|
I'm still Lol-ing at my abandoned commute this morning. Seriously overestimated my ability to ride on snow-covered ice without the studdeds on. . .Should have been more ambitious over the weekend, I suppose. Oh, and that front fender. That should go on too. Sliding sideways down a steep hill has a way of making you turn around and try tomorrow
:) |
I rode into work today only to find that the building was closed for the day due to an electrical fire/manhole explosion a few blocks away. I had read about it in the news online before leaving and briefly thought about the possibility of power being out in my building... But I didn't get my hopes up.
This is seriously the best thing that's ever happened to me. I'm only working one day this week (tomorrow). Sweet. On the way home, one of those breakfast/lunch wagons you see at construction sites passed me. One of its side flaps was open and was horizontal, so that when it passed, the side flap thing passed directly over my head. It was probably about 6 to 8 inches above my head, but it was still pretty disconcerting! |
yeah yeah it was not cold today. 48 deg when I left the house at 5:45 am. then it started misting and a bit of rain half way to the shuttle stop at Northlake. that quit before I arrived at the bus. so it was not a bad ride. damp but not very wet? could hardly see the road though with the wet road conditions. hmmm... new dinotte 200L light on the helmet just did not light up the night for me this morning. oh and temp is down to 44 deg now at 9:30 am.
|
it was cold and i was fast
|
2-3 inches of snow and falling pretty hard when I got up. Drove to the Y and rode the stationary bike for my "cummute". I can do cold pretty well, but I draw the line at snow and winds over 20mph.
|
The last time I commuted was last wed and it was in the low 40s. Today was 19F. That was a wee bit of a change. Otherwise a good ride.
Plus, I rode my power and sustained intervals yesterday. My poor legs feel like they have been abused by a German dominatrix. |
Only saw two other people bike-commuting in Denver this morning. Toughen up people!!
|
I keep track to amuse myself. Today's total was 9. A couple months ago it was 20-30 each way.
|
Snowing like a champ this morning. Loved every minute of it except for getting slammed by salt coming from a salt truck as it passed me. Hopefully my commuting clothes will dry out by the time that I head for home.

Except for one close-pass, uneventful commute this morning, a pleasant change after my weird morning rides last week. |
Great commute in this morning except for the fact that i had left my cycling shoes at work last week so i rode in wearing steel toed work boots this morning.
|
Cold! 20sF. Thick frost. Bright sun.
|
29 degrees. Felt a bit over dressed with a light wicking, and 2 fleece layers. But that is helping me keep my fingers warmer inside the skii gloves somehow !!
Over all, uneventful, fun commute. |
I feel I've got to tell this to people who will understand!!!
This morning I cracked my previous best commute time by almost a full minute! So chuffed! Average speed was over 17mph for the first time, too! (17.2, to be precise) It was bloomin' cold and foggy, but I missed every light and had a really good rhythm going - lovely start to the day. Thank you for your patience! |
