I've been lucky with mechanical issues, but the weather does provide some interesting challenges. It wasn't part of a commute, but to test out my winter bike, I headed out for an evening rush-hour ride on the snowiest day we've had. Wasn't that much snow, but enough to cover the roads and snarl traffic, largely because it was so cold (15 F). I just wanted to see if my bike and I could handle it and if my gear could handle weather that cold. Yes on both counts, though I won't commute in that if it gets that bad again. The cars were having too much trouble with skidding, drivers couldn't see well, and the combination of snow in the middle of the road pushing drivers to the right and slush/rutted snow/ice piling up in the shoulder made it downright dangerous. The cold was not a problem, and a recent hour ride in a soaking 40 F rain left me dry and comfortable, so short of a traffic disaster, I see no reason I can't keep it up. Good luck!

First number total commuting miles. Number in parentheses total miles including non-commuting miles. Its a little more apparent after a few weeks when the numbers are much larger.

Thanks. I'll update. Once quick question: Does commuting miles mean commuting to work only, or would it include any time you bike to an activity (shopping, other recreation, etc...) rather than driving?

Hi chefisaac,

The system may not be rocket science, but clearly I'm new to it and am making mistakes (since I can't think of any reason I'd want to purposely erase another person's mileage). Think of me as challenged in this regard and be certain that it's the product of ineptitude and not malevolence.

If you wouldn't mind, could you point out to me exactly whose mileage I erased so I can

a. Apologize to that person/those people. If you're one of them, please, again, accept my apology.

b. Avoid making the same mistake.

Again, I'm sure that most normal people are capable of updating their miles without screwing up the chart, but I'm obviously not one of them. If you could point out my mistake directly, it'd be helpful for everyone trying to use the thread.

Iron Chef--I looked back at previous posts, and I don't think it was me who erased your miles. They disappeared before my first post (which I did incorrectly by copying and pasting an older thread than the most current one, but your miles were still there). You had 61 miles in post #69, but they disappeared in post #70 and #71. I didn't post for the first time until #72. By then, you were gone from the list; I just copied the most recent one and inserted my miles.

So I apologize if I erased anybody's miles--maybe you were talking about somebody else's--but I wasn't the one who initially erased yours. I'm glad you're back in the thread and I will continue to try to post carefully and correctly.
