I showed up at work in short sleeves and sweaty. It was misty, so I got wet from both inside and outside. 60 degree weather and 90%+ humidity in December is just wrong.
I finally made it out on my bike again this morning. It had been over a week, and almost 3 weeks before that. Just a bunch of different things that all seemed adequate at the time, but viewed collectively do not.
About 40 degrees, foggy/misty but not really raining. Dark both ways today, as usual this time of year. I didn't get passed by any cars on my 9 mile ride once I got out of town. I love that. |
38F and 100% RH means thick, thick fog. I had 3 PB Superflashes going, 1 steady and 2 blinking. Got plenty of room, so they seemed to do the trick.
First cold commute this year! 37 degrees outside and surprisingly not terrible. I unfortunately neglected to wear a pair of gloves and a random pedestrian, seeing me rubbing my hands together at an intersection, gave me his! Gotta love Texas.
36F and driving rain/wind this morning. first time the jacket ever weeped at the seams. 44F and light rain on the way home. getting dark enough on the way home to use flashers and headlight vs just hi-viz gear.
It was ccccold. I know, I know, some of you have been commuting in sub zero already. But for AZ, goign from 55F mornings last week, to 41F this morning, is a big drop. I head out with pants, wool socks and a long sleeve thermal shirt on. Got out to the street where the wind hit me and I turned around to go get a hoody. I need something to keep my poor ears warm though.
Otherwise it was rather dark ride, staying dark until my last mile. I got to see some upclose damage from the heavy winds we had last night, though. |

Some idiot almost hit me turning left this morning in a rural setting. I anticipated him not stopping, so I swerved to the right to avoid him. As I passed by him, he was talking on the phone. I'm considering getting a vest... This rare occasion I didn't have my camera, because it was full. On the way back from work, some motorist tried to pass me and get in my lane. Of course, he/she slows down like a snail with their turn signal on. For my own safety, I just braked hard and let them pass. What is about people that must pass a bicycle right before a traffic signal that's red? This is with a strong 15mph tailwind and going downhill, so I'm going well over 20. I did see a hottie in spandex jogging with her dog. I know she saw me.
28F/-2C. Soul sucking. 15MPH headwind blasting me square in the face. Speeds reduced to a snail's pace.
Supposed to get colder all day, too. I'm prepared. The cold doesn't bother me. |
Forgive me my fellow commuters for it has been nearly 3 weeks since my last bike commute.
It was -16C (3F) this ride in today and I felt great for riding in. However, there were some issues. In preparing my 2nd bike for winter use, I didn't complete the installation of my front fender and it rubbed the whole way. I installed knobby tires for additional traction and then lowered the tire pressure for an even wider footprint. However, the pressure was way too low and I bounced like a kangaroo the whole way in. I also lowered the seat so that it would be easier for me to put my feet down should the bike slip out from under me but it was too low and my legs were aching the whole way. At lunch break, I'll fix all of that. I guess I got my penance for not commuting for such a long time. There was some snow over the last few days, maybe about 10cm (4") in total but the streets and sidewalks were plowed so I rode on the sidewalks for the most part (it was 6:30am, no one else was out so I didn't interfere with anyone on the sidewalks). Lowest low forecast for the rest of the week is -5C, highest high is +1C with a possible 5cm (2") snow through the week, should be good commuting this week. |
Bonus commute today. I had planned to drive due to forecasts for a cold, rainy day but the cold front moved through much faster than expected with no rain. So I had a nice ride this morning with a tailwind most of the way on dry streets and it's supposed to clear off by mid-morning. It's a weird day where the temperatures are supposed to fall from morning to afternoon. Temps were in the low 60s F on my morning ride and could drop to 40s by afternoon.
Headwind and a bit cooler than yesterday but overall a good ride in. Fog long gone. Waiting for my new balaclava to arrive so I'll be ready when Winter temps hit.
33 degF, roads were plowed well, icy in spots, 1 in. snow to contend with for 1/4 mile through the golf course but a nice ride this morning.
36 F this morning. My first under 40 since last winter. Woo Hoo! :)
-25C (-15F) this morning. Blessed with minimal wind that was in my favor. Light dusting of snow, maybe 2cm, took the edge off the glare ice on the side roads and made for a pleasant ride. The snow pack is solid and easy to cycle on now. Saw only three other tracks this morning.
For the first time, in maybe ever, I wore contacts instead of glasses. What a treat that was, not having to peer through and over frosted-up glasses. I keep thinking about goggles, but I've not looked into them. I often wonder how they would work with glasses under a full-face balaclava. |

it was properly cold this morning thanks in part to a fairly stiff cross wind. 24 degrees actual/14 degrees windchill. i think this morning was colder than any ride i had last year (the year that winter forgot).
Lots of rain last night, freezing cold this morning (-8 celcius) so I figured the roads would be very icy. WRONG!!! I took the van for nothing, I saw maybe 5-6 icy spot on my 27.15 kms ride. I burned gaz for nothing... I feel dirty...

(full disclosure - I drove to work today too) |
44ºF, clear, no wind, light traffic (for a large city). Certainly can't complain. Though some folks at work think I'm crazy for commuting both in the dark, and in the cold...but we just got a new bike rack installed in our gated, secured parking garage, and I need to break it in.

I have found the best temps to be in the 20 to 30 degF range. Easy to determine dress and no sweating at all. Arrive at the office, change up quickly, no shower needed and it's that simple until next spring for me. Then you have colder teens and single numbers that are similar but require paying attention to face, fingers, toes. Then you have the below 0 stuff where you need additional layers all over. Lots of fun.

scant snow flurries @ 4am, 32f. Aftn was 35f @ 3:30pm •

As I pulled up to the stop line at a red light, a woman carrying a bag of nickels hustled toward me from the side shouting "You'd better not go through that light." Huh? I was already putting my foot down. She went around behind me, about 10' from the crosswalk. I thanked her for her concern (well, not exactly) and we went on our way.
That put me in a good mood as an e-bike pulled up from behind beeping his very annoying horn. He stopped behind a car and blocked me from filtering up. Geesh! An otherwise nice day, about -5deg c (28f) but dry and windless. Merry Xmas to all... |
Rain in both directions today... didn't bother me too much but my bike is starting to get awful squeaky.
17F/-8C on the bike computer this morning. No wind. The sunrise was painting the clouds and Adirondack Mountains a nice shade of purple. I had to dodge some larger patches of ice. Don't have studded tires on the Soho.
14F this morning, sun rising, calm conditions and a few coyotes yelping in the background. Icy patches here and there from yesterdays snow melt. Nice Ride!
Two days in a row in the 20s in the morning! An odd occurance for El Paso, but riding through the dark in the early morning with these temperatures feels great. Like a morning slap in the face - "Thanks I needed that!"
My knee was bothering me this morning on the way in. I was planning on doing my first 4 day commute this week but I think I might drive in tomorrow and give it a rest
Another commuter going the same direction as me - unusual in the morning - passed me early so I rode with him for a while, until he slowed down later. He had good road style gear which looked incongruous with his backpack, not that there's anything wrong with that but I don't normally see it and even less so when it's cold.
