I did a 7 day supported tour last week for a total of 595km. I was feeling much better at the end of it than I did last year. I set a new personal top speed of 77kph on a downhill with a tailwind, spinning 145RPM in the top gear of my road bike.

I took my mountain bike to class through a light rain that wasn't in the forecast. It got me thinking back to my early days of bike commuting where I wouldn't take my bike if there was a chance of rain.

fletchh 08-02-12 04:24 AM

Good ride in at 70f (21c). All the walkers I saw when it was light have disappeared with the darkness. I hope that they are still walking. Beautiful moon to keep me company, peering through the trees every now and then.

essiemyra 08-02-12 05:24 AM

There were heavy down pours when I was leaving work last evening so I waited about ten minutes and they had lightened up. I decided not to add miles in on the ride home due to the rain, but when I got to one part of my ride the road was so flooded(think lake) that I had to lift my bike over the guard rail and walk up on higher land for about 150yds. Then I was able to get back on the road and finish my ride home.

The ride in this morning was warm and muggy and partly sunny skies with no incidents, so a nice ride all in all.

virre 08-02-12 06:32 AM

Was late for work this morning so this ride had to be in quickspeed. Of course it's not that bad when you live on the top of a hill. Although I had enough time to get pissed off at the big metal bars that the roadworks have said in the middle of the bike/pedestrian lane that is the recommended replacement way. I guess they set it up to minimize the risk of collosion between bikes and pedestrians but it always feels risky. 16 minutes to work with a stop at the post office, but embarassing enough it only is about 3 kilometers and mostly downhill so...

tarwheel 08-02-12 06:44 AM

Fastest commute time of the year yesterday, and it was a good thing. A nasty thunderstorm was brewing as I neared home in the afternoon and I started hearing loud thunder. That was all the motivation I needed to keep pushing the pace, and I made it home minutes before the storm hit. The weather has been this way in NC for the past two weeks, with t-storms almost every afternoon or evening. Makes for very "exciting" commutes.

dramiscram 08-02-12 07:30 AM

Broke another spoke this morning, I'll get a complete rebuilt I think. The rest of the ride was nice, 57 min. to cover my 27.1 kms

groovestew 08-02-12 09:33 AM

Working from home today, but I got out for a little morning ride where all I did was ride through a ravine 5 times (10 climbs X 100 ft). I think I annoyed a guy walking his dog in the ravine - he originally had it off-leash, and it chased me up the hill for a while. When I came back down, the dog was on its leash. When I passed them again on another round, the dog was off-leash again (didn't chase me that time), and then next time I saw them again, dog was back on-leash. I suspect the guy would have preferred to leave his dog off-leash, had I not kept riding by!

Sick of a$$holes not calling their passes on the MUP. Happened a few times yesterday, a couple times they were close calls as I was riding in the middle of my lane, oncoming bike traffic doing the same, and these idiots decide to squeeze between with no audible warning. Summertime brings jackass time trialists, fall ninjas. Every year the same. Hate to sound like a curmudgeon, but use a little respect and common sense please.

....

Nothing untoward happened to me this morning, though, and I had a nice ride in with cooler morning temps, even if it was a bit muggy.

i almost never warn when pass. that is not about *******ness it's about safety. in 2 out 3 cases the person i am about to pass will turn head in my direction and that make her swirl in my direction as well. And if you don't like people riding too close to you, you can always give them some more space by riding on the right side of the lane, that works for me

First time poster here but I have been commuting for the past 4 years and I always warn when passing. They may turn their head when you warn but you need to compesate for that and give them room to the side anyways. Also warn them far enough back that it gives them time to turn around see you before you pass. I would much rather have people know that I am passing then getting up close and getting sideswiped. Always play it safe. You should always warn early and still ride cautiously while passing.

caloso 08-02-12 11:27 AM

Low and slow.

babo 08-02-12 12:45 PM

Beautiful ride this morning: cool, but sunny (13C), no measurable wind, low fog rolling through, burning off with the sun. I took the short route past the university. The one thing that really caught my attention this morning was the dew on the spider webs on the grass.

I'm always impressed with the distances some people say they are riding. I've GISed and road-tested my route to death to minimize the distance traveled (7 kilometres one way). While I enjoy cycling and all the bonuses that come with it, cycling is a selfish activity that I must manage properly with the dependents in my life.

I certainly understand your concerns about people jumping inn front of you if you call passes, though I only understand it to the point that it has to do with inexperienced pedestrians, especially tourists not accustomed to that sort of thing. When commuting on my touring bike at 15 mph or so, I hardly fall into this category. I'm not gonna hug the right side of the MUP so that someone can turn the Mount Vernon Trail into their own personal time trial course, especially when doing so would mean running over the bumpier parts of the trail right over tree roots. I can see not calling your pass when traffic is light, and I often will move to the side to make a little extra room when I see someone coming up from behind quickly. The bit that really gets my goat is the heavy traffic squeeze throughs with no warning between me oncoming traffic be it on foot or on two wheels. It's just stupid, dangerous, and rude IMHO. Haines Point is right across the river if you need...

This is what I do as well. I may get annoyed that they don't move out of the way (on the Mall , for instance) or if they almost turn into my path when I call my power our ring my bell, and I do, but I feel it's my responsibility to give a heads up, and I plan my call/bell ringing accordingly.

Anyway, pretty nice ride in this morning. Running a little late for work, so I had to push it a bit, which made for a sweaty ride on this humid morning. Running a couple errand on the way home from work today, and excited about the extra few miles I'll get out of it, even if it's a bit on the warm side with temps in the low to mid 90s. That's the norm in DC these days , though, so just gotta deal with it.

treadtread 08-02-12 02:26 PM

Had a pretty fast run in today. Was cycling at almost 18-20mph continuously, which is a big jump up from my regular 15mph. I guess the increased pressure in the tires, and the stiffer shoes (I normally wore thin canvas shoes) had something to do with this, though I hadn't anticipated such a big change.

Sweet fast commute this morning, and I learned a BIG LESSON TOO!!

Weather was a nice 80 degrees a 7am. This morning, I take a real long way to work to get in some riding. I am on this street that has a long, long downhill. All I ride is road bikes too. I am reaching 30mph the speed limit is 30mph.. However, the street was smooth for a while, but then it got rough and bumpy. Oh boy, I got speed on, and I am on this bumpy road.. That raised my learning curve a couple notches right there. I survived, but never again, will I speed on a bumpy road, or an unknown road..I almost went down on a couple hard bumps, and I am praying I don't have any dings in my wheels too. But, I considered this a EASY learning curve. A HARD learning curve would have been if I went down. ;)

Either way I learned, but it is much better learning the EASY WAY.. ;)

A doe leapt across the path in front of me.

Saw 5 turtles on the same log.

Saw 2 bunnies.

People smiled back at me.

Good ride.

Not "good" ride - Fantastic ride! Rides like this are why I ride my bike, even though I'm almost 60 I always have the widest eyes.

Mr. Hairy Legs 08-02-12 10:18 PM

Headwinds in all directions :p

It's been a windy week.

virre 08-03-12 01:20 AM

Rainy weather and yet I got up on the bike, so good. I just hope that it either stops this evening or that I can find some roof for the bike when I bike to town for gaming.

fletchh 08-03-12 04:28 AM

A nice ride in, and the weather is fine at 73f (23c). I lacked energy today, but did fine coming in. The legs always seem to know what to do.

dcb23 08-03-12 05:02 AM

Overtook one of my team members on the way in...she let out a laugh as I rang my bell inecessantly like an idiot and zipped by her.

Sometimes this bike commuting is the best part of the day (work day that is)

aquateen 08-03-12 05:25 AM

on my ride home last night my right shifter cable snapped right at the brifter and i hobbled my way home. my cassette has been skipping all week and i've keep adjusting it and it would get worse. i guess 6-7 years is a little too long to rely on the same cables lol

mcrow 08-03-12 06:47 AM

Had a good ride in this morning, nice 5.2 mile ride. Nice and cool this morning and it made for a great ride.

I learned this lesson riding on an unfamiliar road in the mountains. It was a very steep road and I got going too fast on the descent. Came to a sharp corner and couldn't make it while staying in my lane. I had to drift into the opposing lane to make the corner and would have hit a car head on if there had been one. Fortunately there was not, but I learned a valuable lesson. A little bit faster, and I would have gone off the pavement.

groovestew 08-03-12 08:23 AM

Cool, cloudy, breezy. Legs felt pretty good this morning.

treadtread 08-03-12 10:00 AM

I had to come down to Santa Clara at pretty short notice today, so I had to drive :( Would have really preferred to do the bike-Caltrain-bike bit.

uncompaghre 08-03-12 10:05 AM

Very humid! It was like riding in a dog's breath the whole way, but I am absolutely loving it. I am now able to bike commute most days, and it has been fantastic.

jdswitters 08-03-12 10:11 AM

I remembered why I like riding in the winter so much this morning when I tried to shorten my commute by going through old town.

No construction!

caloso 08-03-12 10:21 AM

Once again the Olympics have messed with my plan to get a long detour ride into work. Was watching the USA-NZ women's soccer game with my son. Hopefully, I'll be able to get in some intervals at lunchtime.
