Light wind and 45 -50 degrees. I didn't overdress today, but my hands were stille a little cold. While the commute was great, I feel my bike is not in good shape, it needs a serious overhaul or will need to be replaced within a few weeks.

I can fix the componets, wheels, chain, cassette, but the race geometry is not condusive to commuting downtown streets. I need a much more upright riding style to feel good about this. I may use my road bike for a bit just to see if it works better.

tarwheel 03-07-12 07:54 AM

Chilly morning in mid-30s F but 5-10 degrees warmer than yesterday. My pace was inexplicably slower than usual this morning. I overslept and perhaps just needed more sleep. Hopefully the afternoon commute will be much nicer with highs expected in the mid-60s.

Boudicca 03-07-12 08:10 AM

First commute in well over a year, and my first from the new house and to the new office. It's about 4.5km (3 miles).

Quiet streets for most of the ride in, but incredibly bumpy roads with a lot of grit and debris. There's building going on along much of the route, so I suspect gatorskin tires might be a good investment. Route down to underground parking is sort of scary, but I have access to a wonderful (supposedly secure) underground bike parking room. Some people are using the flimsiest of locks, which made me feel that my bike might be a little safer than the others. It's a nicer bike too, so maybe not. Room has a water fountain at its entrance, which is going to be good for the summer commute.

There's going to be a nasty left-turn across streetcar tracks on the way back, which means I might try to find a different route back.

Felt so good.

The locker room in the downtown Federal government office building where I work never got empty -- there's at least 10-20 regulars that bike right through the winter. But yeah, the warm weather commuters will start showing up any day now.

Kage01 03-07-12 08:24 AM

Warm 51 degrees this morning, first commute of the year without long underwear!!! Whole way in was into 15 to 20 mph wind. I am sure that the wind will switch directions by tonight.

Strong wind still beats going by car.

TheTreauth 03-07-12 08:34 AM

50 degrees and sunny this morning! Winds were about 20 mph but it was a cross wind so no issues there. Gorgeous ride in! Hopefully I can beat the rain home this evening, though.

AlmostTrick 03-07-12 09:14 AM

20+ mph head wind. My normal 45-50 minute ride took 61 minutes.

Warm though, lower to mid 50’s. The forecast is calling for the winds to stay, so the ride home promises to be quite a scorcher! :thumb:

CommuteCommando 03-07-12 09:29 AM

Weather dipped down to 45F. I need new gloves as the cold was getting through the one I have now.

I wrote a post last Friday, but evidently never hit 'post' so I'm going to recount a couple of days of woes.

Last Friday my ride was shaping up to be particularly good. I had just had the derailleurs adjusted, to eliminate some rubbing that was annoying me (serious rubbing when I was in the middle ring and any of the 3 smallest cogs). All was well until I heard a sound as though I had dropped or run over something metallic. I slowed and turned to look at what it might have been when I heard a second, similar noise, only louder. I then felt some interference at the rear wheel. It was then that I realized I had popped two spokes, one through the rim. I was able to remove the spokes, and nurse the bike the rest of the way to the office, but I decided that it would be prudent to leave early and take metro home, rather than risk riding 20 more miles with two missing spokes. I really don't know what caused the breakage -- they both broke near the 'middle' - say where they cross over each other? I guess it could be that the chain rode up into the spokes, but it seemed way too 'high' for that. Either way, I'll be going over my drivetrain before I ride again to assure myself that there's no interference there.

This week, my riding has consisted of one ride (Monday) along one of my shorter routes (8.7 miles each way) on my backup MTB, and two really short rides to and from metro (yesterday and today). I should have my new wheel tomorrow (crosses finger!) so I'll be able to ride the whole way again on Friday. I guess if the wheel doesn't show up, I could ride the road bike in, but it also needs some tuning, and I don't necessarily love the idea of having to wear the loaded backpack for the 20 mile ride each way.

My head cold continues to go away. Ride home lady night was better than the morning commute and included an extra few miles to run some errands on the way. Beautiful sunset added to it all. Thought briefly about snapping a photo with the smartphone, but was in a little bit of a hurry, and I don't think it would have done it any justice, so I just took it all in.

Nice tailwind this morning made quick work of the commute. Supposed to be quite warm this this afternoon... Should be shorts and tee shirt weather.

HardyWeinberg 03-07-12 10:44 AM

25F, blinding sun. Took the road bike and just a shoulder bag instead of my usual panniers loaded with end-of-the-world supplies, my phone says my avg speed was 3mph higher than the last couple days (also minus the rain and headwinds of course, that doesn't hurt the speed either)

dude72 03-07-12 11:39 AM

-5 degree celsius. car drivers slowly realize that cyclist are back on the street. spring is just wonderfull

enigmaT120 03-07-12 12:46 PM

It was 25 degrees at my place this morning too, but beautifully clear and starry. The nearly full moon was almost down in the west with some planet that has been following it around above that. The sunrise was just a glow in the east as I coasted down the ridge into Dallas, and it's starting to give me the view of the Cascades profile against the sunrise. Next week I'll be back in the dark but that's OK.

I'm looking forward to a 50 degree long (22 mile) ride this afternoon. Shorts and T-shirt!

Bat Guano 03-07-12 01:54 PM

Headwind this morning was a beeyotch. Hoping it stays in the same direction for the ride home!

cehowardGS 03-07-12 02:55 PM

Getting warm, I am getting faster, and I am riding a different bike each day, five days a week. The ride with each bike is sweet, just like having 7 or 8 women, or if you a woman, having 7 or 8 men, and changing when you like. ;)

Life is dam sweet!! http://budgetlightforum.com/sites/al...miley-cool.gif

Che13 03-07-12 03:09 PM

My first week commuting for this year is over.
20 km with 10 kmh backwind most of the time, 2 degree celsius, nice weather.

Mark Stone 03-07-12 05:42 PM

Parked the new car finally and got back on the bike! AM ride was 55 degrees+ and was awesome, then the Springtime west winds pushed me home - what a great day on the bike. People are insane if they don't do this at least once in a while!

ottawa_adam 03-07-12 08:02 PM

My first ride of the season and my first ride on my new bike. I took it nice and slow, in order to get accustomed to the bike. I had to make some adjustments when I got home. Overall, a nice return trip.

Rimmer 03-07-12 08:53 PM

I couldn't get on the last bus, because the racks were full--no big deal. The stupid bus was late, which caused me to miss my alternative route, the boat by mere seconds. I have to wait 30min, so I'm already raging. My heart rate drops pretty quickly with no activity, so I go inside to wait it out.

Around 8:30 p.m. or so on the highway (speed limit of 40mph) and briefly after my 4-6% grade descent some young girl, teenager?, in the passenger side of a white pickup truck stuck her head out the window and told me to get on the sidewalk. There was no traffic ahead of me, and there were no other vehicles around, and there were two lanes. I yelled at her, "Suck my cock" while giving her the finger. My eyes were deadset on the traffic light ahead to turn red, so I could give her a piece of mind. Unfortunately, the light never turned red, and I lost them. I was heading westbound with average wind speed of 6mph with a south-east direction. It was 41 degrees Fahrenheit. I didn't have my gloves or skullcap, but I managed to survive the ride home.

Chalupa102 03-07-12 10:17 PM

Great commutes today and the weather felt beautiful.

58F and sunny with mainly crosswinds from the S @ 17-18mph on the way in. There was a lot more traffic than usual on Bay St for some reason this afternoon.

46F and dark with mainly crosswinds from the S @ 12-15mph on the way home. Took a slightly different way and it seemed a bit quicker than my normal route. Not sure if I'm going to continue taking it because it is slightly longer, or stick with what I'm used to.

Technically I'm done with cycle commuting till March 17 because I'm taking an early Spring break to CA. While I'm there, one of my friends is going to let me borrow one of his trikes, so we can do some riding together though.

fletchh 03-08-12 05:27 AM

It was warm coming in at 54f (12C). This was my first morning for shorts in several months, and even though it won't be consistent for the next couple of months, it is a reason to celebrate.

dcb23 03-08-12 07:08 AM

A warm but very strong crosswind coming home last night and again on the way in this a.m.

hyhuu 03-08-12 07:27 AM

Yupe! Warm and windy. This morning I decided to put a little more air in the tires than normal to take out the sluggishness. Well it did the job but my fillings are also comming loose. Going back to comfort over performance on the way back.

Tractortom 03-08-12 07:38 AM

Getting warmer as the week progresses, but the wind just will not quit! Had a 15-20mph cross wind for most of the ride home last night, and the same cross wind this morning, but a bit less fierce. Been a couple of good days commuting to work here in South Florida. Was about 63 degrees this morning, so I didn't bother with my tights or full gloves. Did put on a light wind shell and off I went. I do ENJOY the commutes in the morning when it's cool and the traffic is light!!!! Makes for a good day at work.

I should have left home 10 minutes earlier. Left into muggy weather (and a vicious headwind), and exactly half way in I felt the first raindrop. By the time I arrived it was full-on rain, and I was full-on wet. Rain has stopped now (of course), although it may start again in the afternoon in time for my ride home.

Sigh.

tarwheel 03-08-12 08:10 AM

Beautiful, relatively warm morning about 50F after several very chilly days. Yesterday the temperature swung about 35 degrees between my morning and afternoon commutes, which makes it difficult wearing the right combination of clothes. I opted for some warmth in the morning, so I was all sweaty by the time I got home in the afternoon.

TheTreauth 03-08-12 08:20 AM

It was pretty warm this morning, just over 50 degrees. It was very windy, though. It wasn't a full on head wind but it did make the ride more challenging. It was about 20 MPH according to weather.com. Still a pretty good commute though.

Last night the commute home was a 25-30 mph headwind and that was very challenging.

genel 03-08-12 08:21 AM

48 hrs of 40+ mph winds finally broke this morning. A bit cool, but a nice tailwind about 15mph or so. FIrst ride in weeks, after I mounted the road tires and caused three weeks of winter to reappear.

cehowardGS 03-08-12 08:30 AM

It is getting warmer..the rides are getting sweeter. The ride this morning was so sweet, I took the long way around to work. ;)

gecho 03-08-12 09:03 AM

Great morning, -8C with a tailwind. The clouds and snow were just right so that I could see for hundreds of feet on the MUP even though there are no lights on it. Still a lot of loose snow around, so I need to be careful on the rutted side streets.

Tomorrow and as far as the forecast extends the daytime highs are supposed to be well above freezing and sunny. With luck the snow will melt quickly then the roads will get dry.
