I've been lazy for almost 2 months, so today, I was back on my bike. It's shocking how much harder it feels after letting the legs sit for so long. Still, it felt good to be riding again, and I'm getting excited that I should have my summer bike back out in the next month or so.

30F, blinding sun, gorgeous, another road bike day.

Nice ride home last night despite the headwind. Apparently the Fourteenth Street Bridge was closed at some point before I went across for a suspicious package or abandoned backpack, though I only gathered that from a local cycling board. I saw no signs of anything having happened by the time I crossed at six it so. I did see a jogger on the bridge with an "Ask Me About Ron Paul" tee shirt, which made me chuckle a little, given Ron Paul's position on federal funding for facilities like the one he was getting to use for a run. Had I been of wicket wit our more confrontational, I might have tried to think of something to say, but I just kept riding.
I had an aggressive driver try to muscle his way past me approaching a red light with a bike box close to home. He largely succeeded, except I just rolled past back in front of him and took up a nice place to stop and wait for the light in front of him in the crosswalk. :-) I wasn't trying to be a douİhe, but I couldn't understand why the puffiness from this particular driver, so I asserted my rights with my positioning. Nice tailwind-assisted ride to work this morning, with a stop for a free promo breakfast item at a restaurant nineteen home and office. Free breakfast food... Yay! Quite warm too. 55+ when I left home around 8. Shirts and a shirt sleeve shirt was perfect! Wind is really howling now, with what will be a headwind for the ride home sustained at 25 mph, gusting to 40. Yippee! :sarcasm: |
Carnage in Minneapolis as a snow squall during the morning rush hour dumped just enough white stuff to cover all the ice patches refrozen from yesterday's melted snow. Apparently there were over 100 pedestrians treated for falls, and bicyclists didn't do much better. I witnessed a couple of falls myself. It's amazing how that same ice without the snow on top can be managed easily, but once hidden, it lurks, waiting for an unsuspecting cyclist to ride by. (Also, a little snow makes ice _way_ slipperier. ). It was all melted by noon.
Next week: 60 degrees! Maybe I'll take the studded tires off. |
Studs off -- woo-hoo!
|
Dreary week, I commuted on my bike only 1 day. I guess I was just lazy! But that's not my way usually, I think next week I will be back to my normal 4 or 5 days of commuting on the Rig . . . Everyone needs a little time off occasionally? Maybe I just needed the rest.

Wind and more wind.
|
My legs needed a break, and the weather played right along. Cold front is moving through NC today and it was raining heavily when I got up, so I hit the snooze button, slept in, drank some nice coffee and drove to work. Still not a bad week for bike commuting, 92 miles in three days, since I got rained out on Monday as well.
Hoping to make up some mileage on Sat-Sunday as we are finally having a weekend with nice weather. We have had foul weather for about the past 6 weekends, making it hard to get in any long rides. Shooting for 60+ tomorrow. |

It's a hot spring day here in Athens with temps reaching 19c (around 66f) and a gently southerly wind making my commute to work along the seaside very relaxing. Hopefully there won't be a major change this evening and my commute back will be just as fun! Unfortunately the weathers changing again and the temperature will drop once again to single digits during next week with showers and a probability of thunderstorms, thus ruining my commute.

I had a horrible commute, I had to drive the CAR in today. No fenders, no water proof/resistent bag make riding in the rain not possible for now.
|
Brisk 22 degrees, fortunately the wind was less than the last couple of days. Certainly appreciate the warm shower when I get to work.
|
High 60's, low 70's on the way in, I took a new route, it was actually a half mile shorter, and with less cars, so I made it here in 25 minutes, not 35 minutes.

Today, the bike handling on cornering started getting a little squirrely eight miles into my ride. At eleven, sitting at a stop light, I squeezed the front tire. Not good. It was 17F degrees with another twelve miles to go. I didn't relish the thought of a cold fix alongside the road, so pedaled my heart out. The tire was pretty squishy toward the end, but it held out. So, the fix gets to occur in 70 degree office comfort. |
30 degrees with 25-30 mph winds, I'll be really happy when this wind stops!
|
Reading about everyone's problems with winds and gusts, I can honestly say that in all the years I've been living in Athens, this has been the windiest year I can remember, by far!
|
Cool (50*F) and moderate amount of rain, but I was perfectly comfortable under my Ultrex Human Powered Machines Rain Cape :). I decided not to even mess with the fenders this morning, as my commute is so short and I can avoid puddles (~1 mile commute). With the way the Giant Defy 3's frame is made, it seems like the frame actually acts as a fender as long as I'm turning by leaning instead of with the handlebar. Overall pleasant ride :).

40F and gray, back to normal. Expecting rain for the pm and foreseeable future, *really* back to normal.

The automated forecast for this morning was 90% humidity and 100% chance of precipitation but any more I disregard predictions and just go. It turned out to be a pretty nice ride, cool, light breeze no rain. I'm expecting patches of sunshine this afternoon.
|
Did my first commute of the year yesterday. Chilly in the morning in the upper 30's but no wind. The ride home was beautiful, 50's but a bit of a headwind. Granted all in all couldn't ask for much more.
|
Great! So good I did it twice. (I forgot my phone on my desk, and had to go back and get it.)
|
I had a flat just before leaving the house. Manufacturing defect in the tube and not enough time to change the tire and still commute by bike. Called a family member for a lift. My wife noticed that the bike ride really does wake me up.

Home all week with flu... the kind that makes you weak and sweaty and makes your body hurt like you fell off of a bike... Missed a few sunny, gorgeous days with temps above 70F! I hope to be back on a bike early next week.

Did my first commute ever this morning.
Start: 6:15 am Distance: 16.03 Miles Time: 1:20:42 Average Speed: 11.91 MPH Max Speed: 32.42 MPH Calories: 1185 All in all I feel good. Hope I have the legs to get back this afternoon. |
Home sick 4.5 days (S-thur came home early on Thur) and still not 100% the 1.5 so drove. Sucks because most of the week was really nice weather and I need the miles trying to get in shape for The Georgia Rides To the Capital event. Crew I ride with it ends up being a 53 mile round trip. I not sure I am going to have it in me after this week. It took a lot out of me and ended up packing on a few pounds :(
|
Beautiful weather (60*F), clear blue skies, flowers starting to blossom... Couldn't ask for a better commute. One of those days that I just have to slow down to try and take it all in.

A fine commute today. Morning the temp was in the mid-30s F. So I had to wear my light winter get-up.
Coming home at just about sundown the temp was in the mid-50s. Normal cotton slacks and low top workshoes were fine. A cotton jacket with sleeves pushed up was just a bit warm. A sweatshirt would have been just right. There was a headwind, fairly stiff. But it didn't seem to affect me as much as it would have on other days. I was at just about my top strength and I could feel it both morning and evening. Now I'm on my weekend until Wednesday. But I'm sure to do some recreational riding as well as the commute when the workweek starts because the forecast is glorious (almost) weather for the next ten days and counting. |
